وَاعْلَمْAndأَنِّيthat Iمَيِّتٌam deadلَاnoمَحَالَةَdoubt
And know that I am dead without a doubt...
فَلَاso do notجَزَعاًlamentإِنْifكُنْتَyou areذَلِكَthatتَعْلَمُaware of
so do not lament if you know that.
فَأَرَادَSo Khwadhah wantedخَوْذَةُKhwadhahقَتْلَهُto kill himفَمَنَعَهُand his companions prevented himأَصْحَابُهُhis companionsحَتَّىuntilيَذْهَبُواthey tookبِهِhimإِلَىtoحَارِثَةَHarithah.
So Khwadhah wanted to kill him, but his companions prevented him until they took him to Harithah.
فَلَمَّاWhenانْتَهَوْاthey reachedإِلَيْهِhimقَالَsaidلَهُto himحَارِثَةُHarithah
When they reached him, Harithah said to him:
يَاOكُلَيْبُKulaibأَنْتَyou areأَسِيرٌa captive.
"O Kulaib, you are a captive."
فَقَالَHe saidمَنْWhoeverيَرَseesيَوْماًa dayيَرَseesبِهِin it
He said, "Whoever sees a day will see its events!"
فَذَهَبَتْSo it becameمَثَلاًa proverb.
Thus it became a proverb.
فَدَفَعَهُThen he handed him overإِلَىtoخَوْذَةَKhwadhahفَخَنَقَهُand he strangled himحَتَّىuntilمَاتَhe died.
Then he handed him over to Khwadhah, who strangled him until he died.
وَمِنْهُمْAnd among themهُدْبَةُHudbahبْنُson ofخَشْرَمٍKhashram
Among them was Hudbah ibn Khashram,
قَتَلَwho killedابْنَsonعَمٍّof paternal uncleلَهُof hisيُسَمَىnamedزِيَادَZiyadبْنَson ofزَيْدٍZaid
who killed a cousin of his named Ziyad ibn Zaid,
فَحُبِسَso he was imprisonedلِيُقَادَto be executed in retaliationبِهِfor him
so he was imprisoned to be executed in retaliation for him.
فَلَمْAnd he remainedيَزَلْcontinuouslyمَحْبُوساًimprisonedحَتَّىuntilشَبَّgrew upابْنُthe sonالْمَقْتُولِof the slain man
He remained imprisoned until the son of the slain man grew up.
فَدَخَلَHe enteredعَلَيْهِupon himالسِّجْنَthe prisonوَهُوَwhile heيُلَاعِبُwas playingصَاحِباًwith a companionلَهُof hisبِالشَّطْرَنْجِat chess.
He entered the prison upon him while he was playing chess with a companion.
فَقِيلَIt was saidلَهُto himقُمْRiseإِلَىtoالْقَتْلِthe execution!
It was said to him, "Rise to your execution!"
فَقَالَHe saidحَتَّىUntilأُفْرِغَI finishمِنْfromلُعْبَتِيmy game.
He said, "Until I finish my game."
فَلَمَّاWhenفَرَغَhe finishedخَرَجَhe went outوَجَعَلَand beganيُهَرْوِلُto jog.
When he finished, he went out and began to jog.
فَقِيلَIt was saidلَهُto himمَاWhatبَالُكَis the matter with youتَأْتِيthat you approachالْمَوْتَdeathهَكَذَاlike this?
It was said to him, "Why do you approach death like this?"
فَقَالَHe saidلَاI do notآتِيهِapproach itإِلَّاexceptشَدّاًrunning.
He said, "I approach it only running."
فَلَقِيَهُThen met himعَبْدُAbdulالرَّحْمَنِRahmanبْنُson ofحَسَّانَHassanفَقَالَand saidأَنْشِدْنِيRecite poetry to me.
Then Abdul Rahman ibn Hassan met him and said, "Recite poetry to me."
فَأَنْشَدَهُSo he recited to him
So he recited:
أَلَاAhعَلِّلَانِيconsole me bothقَبْلَbeforeنَوْحِthe wailing ofالنَّوَائِحِthe wailers
Ah, console me both before the wailing of the wailers
وَقَبْلَAnd beforeاطِّلَاعِthe rising ofالنَّفْسِthe soulبَيْنَbetweenالْجَوَانِحِthe ribs
And before the rising of the soul between the ribs
وَقَبْلَAnd beforeغَدٍtomorrowيَاohلَهْفَregret ofنَفْسِيmy soulعَلَىoverغَدٍtomorrow
And before tomorrow—oh, the regret of my soul for tomorrow—
إِذَاWhenرَاحَdepartأَصْحَابِيmy companionsوَلَسْتُand I am notبِرَائِحِdeparting
When my companions depart and I am not departing
إِذَاWhenرَاحَdepartأَصْحَابِيmy companionsوَخُلِّفْتُand I am left behindثَاوِياًstaying
When my companions depart and I am left behind staying
بِدَاوِيَةٍin a wastelandبَيْنَbetweenالْمِتَانِthe firm groundsالضَّحَاضِحِand shallow sands
in a wasteland between the firm grounds and shallow sands.
قَالَHe saidثُمَّthenأُقْعِدَhe was seatedلِيُقَادَto be executed in retaliation
He said: Then he was seated to be executed in retaliation.
فَنَظَرَHe lookedإِلَىatأَبَوَيْهِhis parentsفَقَالَand said
He looked at his parents and said:
أَبْلِيَانِيShow meالْيَوْمَtodayصَبْراًpatienceمِنْكُمَاfrom both of you
Show me today patience from both of you
إِنَّforحُزْناًgriefمِنْكُمَاfrom both of youبَادٍis apparentلِشَرٍّto evil
for grief from both of you is an omen of evil
لَاI do notأَرَىseeذَاthisالْمَوْتَdeathيُبْقِيsparingأَحَداًanyone
I do not see this death sparing anyone
إِنَّindeedبَعْدَafterالْمَوْتِdeathدَارَis the abode ofالْمُسْتَقَرِّpermanence.
indeed after death is the abode of permanence.
ثُمَّThenنَظَرَhe lookedإِلَىatامْرَأَتِهِhis wifeفَقَالَand saidلَهَاto her
Then he looked at his wife and said to her:
لَاDo notتَنْكِحِيmarryإِنْifفَرَّقَseparatesالدَّهْرُtimeبَيْنَنَاbetween us
Do not marry if time separates us
أَغَمَّone with thick hairالْقَفَاat the napeوَالْوَجْهِand faceلَيْسَwho is notبِأَنْزَعَاreceding at the hairline
one with thick hair at the nape and face, not receding at the hairline
وَكُونِيAnd beحَبِيسَاًdedicatedأَوْorلِأَرْوَعَto a brilliantمَاجِدٍnoble man
And be dedicated [to my memory] or to a brilliant, noble man
إِذَاwhenضَنَّwithholdأَغْسَاسُthe meanالرِّجَالِmenتَبَرُّعاًin generosity.
when mean men withhold in generosity.
فَمَالَتْSo inclinedزَوْجُهُhis wifeإِلَىtowardsجَزَّارٍa butcherفَأَخَذَتْand tookمُدْيَتَهُhis knifeفَقَطَعَتْand cutبِهَاwith itأَنْفَهَاher nose.
So his wife inclined towards a butcher, took his knife, and cut off her nose with it.
وَجَاءَتْهُShe came to himمَجْدُوعَةًwith her nose mutilatedفَقَالَتْand saidأَتَخَافُ"Do you fearأَنْthatيَكُونَthere will beبَعْدَafterهَذَاthisنِكَاحٌ؟any marriage?"
She came to him with her nose mutilated and said, "Do you fear that there will be any marriage after this?"
فَرَسَفَHe clankedفِيinقُيُودِهِhis shacklesوَقَالَand saidالْآنَ"Nowطَابَhas become sweetالْمَوْتُdeath."
He clanked in his shackles and said, "Now death has become sweet."
فَلَمَّاWhenقُدِّمَhe was brought forwardلِيُقَادَto be executed in retaliationبِابْنِfor the son ofعَمِّهِhis uncle
When he was brought forward to be executed in retaliation for his cousin,
وَأَخَذَand tookابْنُthe son ofزِيَادٍZiyadالسَّيْفَthe swordفَضُوعِفَتْand there was multipliedلَهُfor himالدِّيَةُthe blood moneyحَتَّىuntilبَلَغَتْit reachedمِائَةَone hundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhams.
and the son of Ziyad took the sword, the blood money was multiplied for him until it reached one hundred thousand dirhams.
فَخَافَتْSo fearedأُمُّthe mother ofالْغُلَامِthe boyأَنْthatيَقْبَلَwould acceptابْنُهَاher sonالدِّيَةَthe blood moneyوَلَاand notيَقْتُلَهُkill him
The mother of the boy feared that her son would accept the blood money and not kill him,
فَقَالَتْso she saidأُعْطِيI giveاللَّهَto Allahعَهْداًa covenantلَئِنْthat ifلَمْnotتَقْتُلْهُyou kill himلَأَتَزَوَّجَنَّهُI will certainly marry himفَيَكُونَso that he will haveقَدْalreadyقَتَلَkilledأَبَاكَyour fatherوَنَكَحَand marriedأُمَّكَ!your mother!
so she said, "I make a covenant with Allah that if you do not kill him, I will certainly marry him, so that he will have killed your father and married your mother!"
فَقَتَلَهُSo he killed him.
So he killed him.
قَالَHe saidوَلَمَّاAnd whenوَاقَعَconfrontedطَلْحَةُTalhahوَالزُّبَيْرُand Az-ZubairعُثْمَانَUthmanبْنَson ofحُنَيْفٍHunaifعَامِلَthe governor ofعَلِيِّAliبْنِson ofأَبِيAbiطَالِبٍTalib
He said: When Talhah and Az-Zubair confronted Uthman ibn Hunaif, the governor of Ali ibn Abi Talib
رَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith himعَنْهُand with him
may Allah be pleased with him,
عَلَىoverالْبَصْرَةِBasra
over Basra,
خَرَجَcame outحَكِيمُHakimبْنُson ofجَبَلَةَJabalahالْعَبْدِيُّAl-Abdi.
Hakim ibn Jabalah Al-Abdi came out.
فَشَدَّSo attackedعَلَيْهِhimرَجُلٌa manمِنْfromأَصْحَابِthe companions ofطَلْحَةَTalhahفَقَطَعَand severedرِجْلَهُhis leg.
A man from the companions of Talhah attacked him and severed his leg.
فَزَحَفَSo he crawledإِلَىtowardsرِجْلِهِhis legحَتَّىuntilأَخَذَهَاhe took itوَرَمَىand threwبِهَاit atقَاطِعِهَاthe one who cut it offفَقَتَلَهُand killed him
So he crawled towards his leg until he took it and threw it at the one who cut it off, killing him,
وَيَقُولُwhile sayingيَاOرَجُلُmanلَاdo notتُرَاعِيbe afraidفَإِنَّforمَعِيwith me isذِرَاعِيmy forearm.
while saying, "O man, do not be afraid, for with me is my forearm."
ثُمَّThenحَبَاhe creptإِلَىtoالْمَقْتُولِthe slain manفَاتَّكَأَand leanedعَلَيْهِon him.
Then he crept to the slain man and leaned on him.
فَقِيلَIt was saidلَهُto himيَاOحُكَيْمُHakimمَنْwhoضَرَبَكَ؟struck you?
It was said to him, "O Hakim, who struck you?"
فَقَالَHe saidوَسَادَتِي"My pillow."
He said, "My pillow."
وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofمُعَاذِMuadhبْنِson ofالْجَمُوحِAl-Jamuhقَالَhe said
On the authority of Muadh ibn Al-Jamuh, he said:
سَمِعْتُI heardالنَّاسَthe peopleيَوْمَon the day ofبَدْرٍBadrيَقُولُونَsaying
I heard the people on the day of Badr saying:
أَبُوAbuالْحَكَمِAl-Hakamلَاshall notيُخْلَصَنَّbe reachedإِلَيْهِby anyone.
"Abu Al-Hakam shall not be reached."
يُرِيدُونَThey meantأَبَاAbuجَهْلٍJahl.
They meant Abu Jahl.
فَلَمَّاWhenسَمِعْتُهَاI heard itجَعَلْتُهُI made himمِنْofشَأْنِيmy concernفَصَمَدْتُand headedنَحْوَهُtowards him.
When I heard it, I made him my concern and headed towards him.
فَلَمَّاWhenأَمْكَنَنِيhe became within my reachحَمَلْتُI attackedعَلَيْهِhimفَضَرَبْتُهُand struck himضَرْبَةًa blowأَطْنَنْتُthat severedقَدَمَهُhis footبِنِصْفِat the middle ofسَاقِهِhis shin.
When he was within my reach, I attacked him and struck him a blow that severed his foot at the middle of his shin.
فَوَاللَّهِBy AllahمَاI did notشَبَّهْتُهَاcompare itحِينَwhenطَاحَتْit fellإِلَّاexceptبِالنَّوَاةِto a date stoneتَطِيحُfallingمِنْfromتَحْتِbeneathمَرْدَحَةِthe crushing stone ofالنَّوَىdate stones.
By Allah, when it fell, I could only compare it to a date stone flying off from beneath the stone used to crush date stones.
قَالَHe saidوَضَرَبَنِيAnd struck meعِكْرِمَةُIkrimahبْنُson ofأَبِيAbuجَهْلٍJahlعَلَىonعَاتِقِيmy shoulderفَطَرَحَand severedيَدِيmy handفَتَعَلَّقَتْso it hungبِجِلْدَةٍby a piece of skinمِنْfromجَنْبِيmy side.
He said: Ikrimah ibn Abu Jahl struck me on my shoulder and severed my hand, so it hung by a piece of skin from my side.
فَأَجْهَضَنِيAnd distracted meالْقِتَالُthe fightingعَنْهُfrom himفَلَقَدْand Iقَاتَلْتُfoughtعَامَّةَthroughoutيَوْمِيmy dayوَإِنِّيwhile Iلَأَسْحَبُهَاwas dragging itخَلْفِيbehind me.
The fighting distracted me from him, and I fought throughout my day while dragging it behind me.
فَلَمَّاWhenآذَتْنِيit bothered meوَضَعْتُI placedعَلَيْهَاupon itقَدَمِيmy footثُمَّthenتَمَطَّيْتُI pulled hardبِهَاwith itحَتَّىuntilطَرَحْتُهَاI cast it away.
When it bothered me, I placed my foot upon it and then pulled hard with it until I cast it away.
قِيلَIt was saidوَلَمَّاthat whenحُمِلَwas carriedرَأْسُthe head ofمُحَمَّدِMuhammadبْنِson ofعَبْدِAbdullahاللَّهِibnبْنِAl-HasanالْحَسَنِtoإِلَىAl-Mansurالْمَنْصُورِfrom the city ofمِنْthe Messengerمَدِينَةِupon himالرَّسُولِand upon his familyعَلَيْهِbe peaceوَعَلَىhe saidآلِهِto Mutairالسَّلَامُson ofقَالَAbdullahلِمُطَيْرِDo you not testifyبْنِthat Muhammadعَبْدِpledged allegiance to me?
It is said that when the head of Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Al-Hasan was carried to Al-Mansur from the city of the Messenger, upon him and his family be peace, he said to Mutair ibn Abdullah: "Do you not testify that Muhammad pledged allegiance to me?"
قَالَHe saidأَشْهَدُ"I testifyبِاللَّهِby Allahلَقَدْthat indeedأَخْبَرْتَنِيyou informed meأَنَّthatمُحَمَّداًMuhammadخَيْرُis the best ofبَنِيthe children ofهَاشِمٍHashimوَأَنَّكَand that youبَايَعْتَpledged allegianceلَهُto him."
He said, "I testify by Allah that indeed you informed me that Muhammad is the best of the children of Hashim and that you pledged allegiance to him."
قَالَHe saidيَا"Oابْنَson ofالزَّانِيَةِthe adulteressأَنَاdid Iقُلْتُ؟say that?"
He said, "O son of the adulteress, did I say that?"
قَالَHe saidالزَّانِيَةُ"The adulteressوَلَدَتْكَgave birth to you."
He said, "The adulteress gave birth to you."
قَالَHe saidيَا"Oابْنَson ofالزَّانِيَةِthe adulteressالْفَاعِلَةِthe immoral womanأَتَدْرِيdo you knowمَاwhatتَقُولُ؟you are saying?"
He said, "O son of the adulteress, the immoral woman, do you know what you are saying?"
قَالَHe saidالَّتِي"The oneتَعْنِيyou meanخَيْرٌis betterمِنْthanأُمِّكَyour mother."
He said, "The one you mean is better than your mother."
فَأَمَرَSo he orderedبِهِhimفَوُتِّدَand pegs were drivenفِيintoعَيْنَيْهِhis eyesفَمَاand he did notنَطَقَutter a word.
So he ordered him, and pegs were driven into his eyes, and he did not utter a word.
قِيلَIt is saidوَقَدِمَthat cameأَعْرَابِيٌّa BedouinعَلَىtoعُمَرَUmarبْنِson ofالْخَطَّابِAl-Khattabرَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith himعَنْهُand with himيَسْتَحْمِلُهُasking him for a mount
It is said that a Bedouin came to Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, asking him for a mount.
فَقَالَSo he saidخُذْ"Takeبَعِيراًa camelمِنْfromإِبِلِthe camels ofالصَّدَقَةِthe charity."
So he said, "Take a camel from the camels of charity."
فَنَظَرَHe lookedإِلَىatبَعِيرٍa camelمِنْهَاamong themفَتَعَلَّقَand hung onبِذَنَبِهِto its tailوَنَازَعَهُand the camel struggled withالْبَعِيرُhimفَاقْتَلَعَand tore offذَنَبَهُits tail.
He looked at a camel among them, hung on to its tail, and the camel struggled with him and tore off its tail.
فَقَالَSo Umar saidعُمَرُ"Didهَلْyou everرَأَيْتَseeأَشَدَّanyone strongerمِنْكَ؟than you?"
So Umar said, "Have you ever seen anyone stronger than you?"
قَالَHe saidنَعَمْ"YesخَرَجْتُI set outبِامْرَأَةٍwith a womanمِنْfromأَهْلِيmy familyأُرِيدُintendingبِهَاwith herزَوْجَهَاher husband.
He said, "Yes, I set out with a woman from my family, intending to take her to her husband.
فَنَزَلْتُSo we alightedمَنْزِلاًat a placeأَهْلُهُwhose peopleخُلُوفٌwere absent.
We alighted at a place whose people were absent.
فَدَنَوْتُI drew nearمِنَtoالْحَوْضِthe water basinفَإِذَاand beholdرَجُلٌa manقَدْhadأَقْبَلَapproachedوَمَعَهُand with himذَوْدٌa small herd of camelsلَهُof his.
I drew near to the water basin, and behold, a man had approached with a small herd of camels of his.
فَصَرَفَHe directedذَوْدَهُhis camelsإِلَىtoالْحَوْضِthe basinوَأَقْبَلَand advancedنَحْوَtowardsالْمَرْأَةِthe womanوَلَاand I do notأَدْرِيknowمَاwhatيُرِيدُhe wanted.
He directed his camels to the basin and advanced towards the woman, and I did not know what he wanted.
فَلَمَّاWhenقَرُبَhe drew nearمِنْهَاto herسَاوَرَهَاhe assaulted herفَنَادَتْنِيso she called out to me.
When he drew near to her, he assaulted her, so she called out to me.
فَلَمَّاWhenانْتَهَيْتُI reachedإِلَيْهِhimكَانَhe hadقَدْalreadyخَالَطَهَاviolated her.
When I reached him, he had already violated her.
فَجِئْتُSo I cameأَدْفَعُهُto push him awayفَأَخَذَand he seizedرَأْسِيmy headفَوَضَعَهُand placed itبَيْنَbetweenذِرَاعِهِhis armوَجَنْبِهِand his side
So I came to push him away, and he seized my head and placed it between his arm and his side,
فَمَاso I was notاسْتَطَعْتُableأَنْtoأَتَحَرَّكَmoveحَتَّىuntilقَضَىhe finishedمَاwhatأَرَادَhe wanted.
so I was not able to move until he finished what he wanted.
ثُمَّThenقَامَhe stood upفَاضْطَجَعَand lay down to sleep.
Then he stood up and lay down.
وَقَالَتْAnd she saidنِعْمَ"What an excellentالْفَحْلُstallionهَذَاis thisلَوْifكَانَتْthere wereلَنَاfor usمِنْهُfrom himسَخْلَةٌan offspring!"
And she said, "What an excellent stallion this is if we could have an offspring from him!"
فَأَمْهَلْتُSo I waitedحَتَّىuntilامْتَلَأَhe was fullنَوْماًof sleep.
So I waited until he was fast asleep.
ثُمَّThenقُمْتُI stood upإِلَيْهِto himفَضَرَبْتُand struckسَاقَهُhis shinبِالسَّيْفِwith the swordفَأَطْنَنْتُهَاand severed it.
Then I stood up to him and struck his shin with the sword, severing it.
فَوَثَبَSo he leaped upفَهَرَبْتُand I fledوَغَلَبَهُand overpowered byالدَّمُblood lossفَرَمَانِيhe threwبِسَاقِهِhis shinفَأَخْطَأَنِيat me, missing meوَأَصَابَand hitبَعِيرِيmy camelفَقَتَلَهُand killed it.
So he leaped up and I fled, and overcome by blood loss, he threw his shin at me, missing me and hitting my camel, killing it.
فَقَالَUmar saidعُمَرُ"Whatفَمَاdidفَعَلَتِthe womanالْمَرْأَةُ؟do?"
Umar said, "And what did the woman do?"
فَقَالَHe saidهَذَا"Thisحَدِيثُis the story ofالرَّجُلِthe man."
He said, "This is the story of the man."
فَكَرَّرَSo he repeatedعَلَيْهِto himمِرَاراًrepeatedlyكُلَّeveryهَذَاtimeيَقُولُhe would sayهَذَا"Thisحَدِيثُis the story ofالرَّجُلِthe man."
So he repeated it to him repeatedly, every time saying, "This is the story of the man."
