أَبُوAbuنُعَيْمٍNu'aymقَالَ:said:

Abu Nu'aym said:

حَدَّثَنَاnarrated to usعَبْدُAbdالْجَبَّارِal-Jabbarبْنُibnالْعَبَّاسِal-Abbasالْهَمْدَانِيُّal-Hamdani

Abd al-Jabbar ibn al-Abbas al-Hamdani narrated to us

عَنْfromعَمَّارٍAmmarالدُّهْنِيِّal-DuhniعَنْfromسَالِمِSalimبْنِibnأَبِيAbiالْجَعْدِal-Ja'dقَالَ:said:

from Ammar al-Duhni, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd, who said:

ذَكَرَmentionedالنَّبِيُّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe upon himعَلَيْهِand blessingsوَسَلَّمَ،be upon him,بَعْضَsomeأُمَّهَاتِof the Mothersالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Believers

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, mentioned some of the Mothers of the Believers

فَضَحِكَتْand laughedعَائِشَةُ،Aisha,رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهَا،with her,

and Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, laughed.

فَقَالَ:He said:انْظُرِي"LookيَاOحُمَيْرَاءُHumayra,أَنْlestلَاyouتَكُونِيbeأَنْتِyouهِيَ،hers,"

He said: "Look, O Humayra, lest you be her."

ثُمَّthenالْتَفَتَhe turnedإِلَىtoعَلِيٍّ،Ali,رِضْوَانُmay the pleasure ofاللَّهِAllahعَلَيْهِ،be upon him,

Then he turned to Ali, may the pleasure of Allah be upon him,

فَقَالَ:and said:انْظُرْ"LookيَاOأَبَاAbuالْحَسَنِal-Hasan,إِنْifوَلِيتَyou are entrusted withمِنْanyأَمْرِهَاof her affair,شَيْئاًanythingفَارْفُقْthen be gentleبِهَا.with her."

and said: "Look, O Abu al-Hasan, if you are entrusted with anything of her affair, then be gentle with her."

وَقَالَAnd saidالزُّهْرِيُّ:al-Zuhri:

And al-Zuhri said:

لَمَّاwhenسَارَتْset outعَائِشَةُAishaوَمَعَهَاand with her wereطَلْحَةُTalhaوَالزُّبَيْرُ،and al-Zubayr,رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُمْ،with them,

When Aisha set out, and with her were Talha and al-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with them,

فِيinسَبْعِsevenمِائَةٍhundredمِنْfromقُرَيْشٍQuraysh,

in seven hundred from Quraysh,

كَانَتْsheتَنْزِلُwould haltكُلَّat everyمَنْزِلٍstationفَتَسْأَلُand askعَنْهُabout it

she would halt at every station and ask about it

حَتَّىuntilنَبَحَتْهَاbarked at herكِلَابُthe dogsالْحَوْأَبِof al-Haw'ab

until the dogs of al-Haw'ab barked at her.

فَقَالَتْ:She said:رُدُونِي،"Take me back,لَاnoحَاجَةَneedلِيdo I haveفِيinمَسِيرِيthis journey of mine,هَذَا،this,

She said: "Take me back, I have no need for this journey of mine,

فَقَدْfor indeedكَانَwasرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe upon himعَلَيْهِand blessingsوَسَلَّمَ،be upon him,نَهَانِيprohibiting me

for indeed the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, prohibited me

فَقَالَ:and saying:كَيْفَ"Howأَنْتِwill you beيَاOحُمَيْرَاءُHumayra,لَوْwhenقَدْindeedنَبَحَتْbarkعَلَيْكِupon youكِلَابُthe dogsالْحَوْأَبِof al-Haw'abأَوْorأَهْلُthe peopleالْحَوْأَبِof al-Haw'abفِيinمَسِيرِكِyour journey,تَطْلُبِينَseekingأَمْراًa matterأَنْتِyouعَنْهُfrom itبِعَمْزَلِ؟are apart?"

and saying: "How will you be, O Humayra, when the dogs of al-Haw'ab, or the people of al-Haw'ab, bark at you in a journey where you seek a matter you are apart from?"

فَقَالَSo saidعَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِibnبْنِal-Zubayr:الزُّبَيْرِ:ibn al-Zubayr:لَيْسَ"This is notهَذَاthatبِذَلِكَplaceالْمَكَانِwhichالَّذِيwas mentionedذَكَرَهُby the Messengerرَسُولُof Allah,اللَّهِ،may peaceصَلَّىbe upon himاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِbe upon him."وَسَلَّمَ،and peace,

Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr said: "This is not that place which was mentioned by the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace."

وَدَارَAnd he went aroundعَلَىtoتِلْكَthoseالْمِيَاهِwatersحَتَّىuntilجَمَعَhe gatheredخَمْسِينَfiftyشَيْخاًeldersقَسَامَةًas a sworn group

And he went around those waters until he gathered fifty elders as a sworn group

فَشَهِدُواand they testifiedأَنَّهُthat itلَيْسَis notبِالْمَاءِthe waterالَّذِيwhichتَزْعُمُونَyou claimأَنَّهُthat youنُهِيَتْwere prohibitedعَنْهُ،from it.

and they testified that it is not the water which you claim she was prohibited from.

فَلَمَّاSo whenشَهِدُواthey testified,قَبِلَتْshe acceptedوَسَارَتْand proceededحَتَّىuntilوَافَتْshe reachedالْبَصْرَةَ،Basra.

So when they testified, she accepted and proceeded until she reached Basra.

فَلَمَّاThen whenكَانَwasحَرْبُthe Battleالْجَمَلِof the Camel,أَقْبَلَتْshe advancedفِيinهَوْدَجٍa litterمِنْofحَدِيدٍiron

Then when the Battle of the Camel took place, she advanced in a litter of iron

وَهِيَwhile sheتَنْظُرُwas lookingمِنْfromمَنْظَرٍan openingقَدْthatصُيِّرَhad been madeلَهَاfor herفِيinهَوْدَجِهَا،her litter,

while she was looking from an opening that had been made for her in her litter,

فَقَالَتْand she saidلِرَجُلٍto a manمِنْfromضَبَّةَDabbaوَهُوَwhile heآخِذٌwas holdingبِخِطَامِthe halterجَمَلِهَاof her camelأَوْorبَعِيرِهَا:her mount:

and she said to a man from Dabba while he was holding the halter of her camel or her mount:

أَيْنَ"Whereتَرَىdo you seeعَلِيَّAliبْنَibnأَبِيAbiطَالِبٍ،Talib,"رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُ؟with him?

"Where do you see Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him?"

قَالَ:He said:هَا"Behold,هُوَذَاthere he isوَاقِفٌstandingرَافِعٌraisingيَدَهُhis handإِلَىtoالسَّمَاءِ،the sky."

He said: "Behold, there he is standing, raising his hand to the sky."

فَنَظَرَتْSo she lookedفَقَالَتْ:and said:مَا"Howأَشْبَهَهُmuch he resemblesبِأَخِيهِ!وhis brother!"

So she looked and said: "How much he resembles his brother!"

قَالَSaidالضَّبِّيُّ:the Dabbite:وَمَنْ"And whoأَخُوهُ؟is his brother?"

The Dabbite said: "And who is his brother?"

قَالَتْ:She said:رَسُولُ"The Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe upon himعَلَيْهِand blessingsوَسَلَّمَ."be upon him."

She said: "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace."

قَالَ:He said:فَلَا"Then I see notأَرَانِيmyselfأُقَاتِلُfightingرَجُلاًa manهُوَwhoأَخُوis the brotherرَسُولِof the Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe upon himعَلَيْهِand blessingsوَسَلَّمَ."be upon him."

He said: "Then I do not see myself fighting a man who is the brother of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace."

فَنَبَذَSo he cast awayخِطَامَthe halterرَاحِلَتِهَاof her riding beastمِنْfromيَدِهِhis handوَمَالَand inclinedإِلَيْهِ.towards him.

So he cast the halter of her riding beast from his hand and inclined towards him.

وَعَنْAnd fromالْحَسَنِal-Hasanالْبَصْرِيِّ،al-Basri,رَحِمَهُmay Allahاللَّهُ،have mercy on him,

And from al-Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him,

أَنَّthatالْأَحْنَفَal-AhnafبْنَibnقَيْسٍQaysقَالَsaidلِعَائِشَةَ،to Aisha,رَحِمَهَاmay Allahاللَّهُ،have mercy on her,يَوْمَon the dayالْجَمَلِ:of the Camel:

that al-Ahnaf ibn Qays said to Aisha, may Allah have mercy on her, on the day of the Camel:

يَا"OأُمَّMotherالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Believers,هَلْdidعَهِدَenjoinإِلَيْكِupon youرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe upon himعَلَيْهِand blessingsوَسَلَّمَ،be upon him,هَذَاthisالْمَسِيرَ؟journey?"

"O Mother of the Believers, did the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, enjoin this journey upon you?"

قَالَتْ:She said:اللَّهُمَّ"By Allah,لَا.no."

She said: "By Allah, no."

قَالَ:He said:فَهَلْ"Didوَجَدْتَهُyou find itفِيinشَيْءٍanythingمِنْofكِتَابِthe Bookاللَّهِof Allahجَلَّwhose majestyذِكْرُهُ؟is exalted?"

He said: "Did you find it in anything of the Book of Allah, whose majesty is exalted?"

قَالَتْ:She said:مَا"We do notنَقْرَأُreadإِلَّاexceptمَاwhatتَقْرَأُونَ.you read."

She said: "We do not read except what you read."

قَالَ:He said:فَهَلْ"Didرَأَيْتِyou seeرَسُولَthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe upon himعَلَيْهِand blessingsوَسَلَّمَ،be upon him,اسْتَعَانَseeking helpبِشَيْءٍwith anyمِنْofنِسَائِهِhis wivesإِذَاwhenكَانَhe wasفِيinقِلَّةٍa state of small numbersوَالْمُشْرِكُونَwhile the polytheistsفِيwere inكَثْرَةٍ؟great numbers?"

He said: "Did you see the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, seeking help with any of his wives when he was in a state of small numbers and the polytheists were in great numbers?"

قَالَتْ:She said:اللَّهُمَّ"By Allah,لَا.no."

She said: "By Allah, no."

قَالَSaidالْأَحْنَفُ:al-Ahnaf:فَإِذاً"Then whatمَاisهُوَourذَنْبُنَا؟sin?"

al-Ahnaf said: "Then what is our sin?"

قَالَ:He said:وَقَالَAnd saidالْحَسَنُal-Hasanالْبَصْرِيُّ:al-Basri:تَقَلَّدْتُ"I buckledسَيْفِيmy swordوَذَهَبْتُand wentلِأَنْصُرَto supportأُمَّthe Motherالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Believers.

And al-Hasan al-Basri said: "I buckled my sword and went to support the Mother of the Believers.

فَلَقِيَنِيThen met meالْأَحْنَفُal-Ahnafفَقَالَ:and said:إِلَى"Whereأَيْنَdo youتُرِيدُ؟intend to go?"

Then al-Ahnaf met me and said: "Where do you intend to go?"

فَقُلْتُ:I said:أَنْصُرُ"I will supportأُمَّthe Motherالْمُؤْمِنِينَ.of the Believers."

I said: "I will support the Mother of the Believers."

فَقَالَ:He said:وَاللَّهِ"By Allah,مَاdid you notقَاتَلْتَfightمَعَalong withرَسُولِthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe upon himعَلَيْهِand blessingsوَسَلَّمَ،be upon him,الْمُشْرِكِينَthe polytheists?

He said: "By Allah, did you not fight the polytheists along with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?

فَكَيْفَHow thenتُقَاتِلُdo you fightمَعَهَاalong with herالْمُؤْمِنِينَ؟"the believers?"

How then do you fight the believers along with her?"

قَالَ:He said:فَرَجَعْتُ"So I returnedإِلَىtoمَنْزِلِيmy houseوَوَضَعْتُand laid downسَيْفِي.my sword."

He said: "So I returned to my house and laid down my sword."

[مَسَاوِئُ[The vices ofمَنْwhoeverعَادَىwas hostile toعَلِيَّAliبْنَibnأَبِيAbiطَالِبٍ]Talib]

[The vices of whoever was hostile to Ali ibn Abi Talib]

رَضِيَMay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُwith him

May Allah be pleased with him
