قَالَ:Heفَسَكَتَbecame silentالْمَهْدِيُّAl-Mahdiطَوِيلاًfor a long timeثُمَّthenالتَفَتَhe turnedإِلَىtoأَصْحَابِهِhis companionsفَقَالَ:and said:
He said: Al-Mahdi remained silent for a long time, then turned to his companions and said:
كَيْفَHowأُقْدِمُcan I proceedعَلَىtoقَتْلِkillرَجُلٍa manلَاwho does notيَخَافُfearمَكِيدَتِيmy plotting
How can I proceed to kill a man who does not fear my plotting,
وَلَاand does notيُرْعِبُهُterrify himسُلْطَانِيmy authorityوَلَاand does notيَتَّقِيguard againstسَطوَتِيmy mightوَأَعْوَانِي،and my helpers,
and is not terrified by my authority, and does not fear my might and my helpers,
يُنَاصِبُنِيhe opposes me inكَلَامِيmy speechوَيَفْسَخُand annulsاحْتِجَاجِي،my argument,
he contests my speech and refutes my argument,
كَيْفَhowوَلَوْifكُنَّاwe wereبَيْنَbeforeيَدَيْthe hands ofمَنْOne whoلَاdoes notيَخَافُfearجَوْرَهُHis injustice
how, and if we were before Him whose injustice is not feared,
وَلَاnorيُتْقَىguarded againstمَيْلُهُHis biasوَحَيْفُهُand His unfairnessكَانَwould his tongueلِسَانُهُbeأَمْضَىsharperوَقَلْبُهُand his heartأَجْرَىbolderوَخَصْمُهُand his opponentأَذَلّ!more abased!
nor His bias and unfairness guarded against, his tongue would be sharper, his heart bolder, and his opponent more abased!
خَلُّواLeaveسَبِيلَهُ.his way.فَمَضَى.So he departed.
Let him go. So he departed.
وَحُكِيَAnd it was narratedعَنْaboutعَدِيِّAdiبْنِson ofزَيْدٍZaidأَنَّهُthat heكَانَwasتَرْجُمَاناًan interpreterبَيْنَbetweenكِسْرَىChosroesوَبَيْنَandالْعَرَبِthe Arabs
And it was narrated about Adi bin Zaid that he was an interpreter between Chosroes and the Arabs,
وَأَنَّهُand that heأَشَارَadvisedعَلَىChosroesكِسْرَىregardingبِتَوْلِيَةِappointingالنُّعْمَانِAn-Nu'manبْنِson ofالْمُنْذِرِAl-Mundhirالْمَلِكَ،as king,
and that he advised Chosroes to appoint An-Nu'man bin Al-Mundhir as king,
وَكَانَand he hadلَهُaعَبْدٌslaveيُعْرَفُknownبِعَدِيِّas Adiبْنِson ofقَيْسٍQais
and he had a slave known as Adi bin Qais,
فَوَشَىwho incitedإِلَىagainstالنُّعْمَانِAn-Nu'manبِعَدِيِّconcerning Adiبْنِson ofزَيْدٍZaid
who incited An-Nu'man against Adi bin Zaid,
وَذَكَرَand mentionedأَنَّهُthat heكَانَwasالسَّبَبَthe reasonفِيforتَمْلِيكِهِ،making him king,
stating that he was the reason for his kingship,
فَسَجَنَهُso An-Nu'man imprisoned himالنُّعْمَانُand became angryوَسَخِطَwith himعَلَيْهِand changedوَتَغَيَّرَattitude towards himلَهُand kept himوَحَبَسَهُ.confined.
so An-Nu'man imprisoned him, became angry with him, turned against him, and locked him up.
فَكَتَبَThen wroteعَدِيُّAdiبْنُson ofزَيْدٍZaidإِلَىtoالنُّعْمَانِAn-Nu'manيَسْتَعْطِفُهُ:seeking his sympathy:
Then Adi bin Zaid wrote to An-Nu'man, seeking his sympathy:
أَبَاOمُنْذِرٍMundhirجَازَيْتَنِيyou rewardedالْوُدَّaffectionسَخْطَةًwith anger......فَمَاذَاso what isجَزَاءُthe reward ofالْمُجْرِمِthe criminalالْمُتَبَغِّضِwho evokes hatred
O Mundhir, you repaid affection with wrath... so what is the reward of the guilty one who evokes hatred?
وَإِنَّAnd indeedجَزَاءَthe reward ofالْحُرِّa free manمِنْكَfrom youكَرَامَةٌis nobility......وَلَيْسَand notبِنُصْحٍwith sincere adviceفِيكَregarding youبِالْمُتَعَرِّضِbeing meddlesome
And indeed the reward of a free man from you is nobility... and not being meddlesome with sincere advice regarding you.
فَلَمْSo did notيَحْفُلِpay attentionالنُّعْمَانُAn-Nu'manبِقَوْلِهِ.to his words.فَقَالَThen he saidيَذْكُرُmentioningحَبْسَهُ:his imprisonment:
An-Nu'man paid no attention to his words. Then he said, mentioning his imprisonment:
إِنَّIndeedلِلدَّهْرِtime hasصَوْلَةًan assaultفَاحْذَرَنْهَاso beware of it......لَاdo notتَبِيَتَنَّspend the nightقَدْhavingأَمِنْتَfelt secure againstالدُّهُورَاthe vicissitudes of time
Indeed time has an assault, so beware of it... do not spend the night feeling secure against the vicissitudes of time.
قَدْOftenيَبِيتُspends the nightالْفَتَىthe young manصَحِيحاًhealthyفَيُرْدَىand is destroyed......وَلَقَدْand indeedبَاتَhe spent the nightآمِناًsafeمَسْرُورَاand happy
Often a young man spends the night healthy and is destroyed... while he spent the night safe and happy.
إِنَّمَاVerilyالدَّهْرُtime isلَيِّنٌgentleوَنَطُوحٌand violent......يَتْرُكُit leavesالْعَظْمَthe boneوَاهِناًweakمَكْسُورَاand broken
Verily time is gentle and violent... it leaves the bone weak and broken.
فَسَلِSo askالنَّاسَthe peopleأَيْنَwhere isآلُthe family ofقُبَيْسٍQubais......طَحْطَحَcrushedالدَّهْرُtimeقَبْلَهُمْbefore themسَابُورَاShapur
So ask the people where the family of Qubais is... time crushed Shapur before them.
خَطَفَتْهُSnatched him awayمَنِيَّةٌdeathفَتَرَدَّىand he fell......وَهُوَwhileفِيinذَاكَthat stateيَأْمُلُhe was hoping forالتَّعْمِيرَاlong life
Death snatched him away and he fell... while in that state he was hoping for a long life.
وَلَقَدْAnd indeedعَاشَhe livedذَاpossessingجُنُودٍarmiesوَتَاجٍand a crown......تَرْهَبُfearedالْأَسْدُthe lionsصَوْلَهُhis assaultوَالزَّئِيرَاand roaring
And indeed he lived possessing armies and a crown... lions feared his assault and roaring.
وَبَنُوAnd the sons ofالْأَصْفَرِAl-Asfarالْكِرَامُthe nobleمُلُوكُkings ofالرُّومِRome......لَمْdid notيَبْقَremainمِنْهُمْof themمَذْكُورَاany one remembered
And the noble sons of Al-Asfar, the kings of Rome... not one of them remained remembered.
ثُمَّThenإِنَّindeedعَدِيّاًAdiكَتَبَwroteإِلَىtoصَاحِبٍa companionلَهُof hisمُقِيمٍresidingبِبَابِat the gate ofكِسْرَىChosroesيُقَالُwho was calledلَهُby the name ofأُبَيٌّ:Ubayy:
Then Adi wrote to a companion of his residing at the gate of Chosroes, who was called Ubayy:
فَأَبْلِغْSo conveyأُبَيّاًto Ubayyعَلَىdespiteنَأْيِهِhis distance......وَهَلْand doesيَنْفَعُbenefitالْمَرْءَa manمَاwhatقَدْhe hasعَلِمْknown
So convey to Ubayy despite his distance... and does what a man has known benefit him?
بِأَنَّThatأَخَاكَyour brotherشَقِيقَthe dearالْفُؤَادِof the heart......يَكَادُis aboutلِنَأْيِكَdue to your distanceأَنْtoيُخْتَرَمْperish
That your brother, dear to the heart... is about to perish due to your distance.
لَدَىWithمَلِكٍa kingمُوَثَّقٌboundبِالْحَدِيدِin iron......إِمَّاeitherبِحَقٍّjustlyوَإِمَّاorظُلْمِunjustly
With a king, bound in iron... either justly or unjustly.
فَلَاSo do notتَلْفَيَنَّfind yourselfكَثِيرَmuchالرُّقَادِsleeping......بَلِratherاصْرِمِdecideالرَّأْيَthe matterثُمَّthenاعْتَزِمْbe resolute
So do not spend much time sleeping... rather decide the matter and then be resolute.
فَلَمَّاWhenقَرَأَhe readهَذِهِtheseالْأَبْيَاتِversesدَخَلَhe enteredعَلَىuponكِسْرَىChosroesفَأَخْبَرَهُand informed himبِمَاof whatكَانَhad happenedمِنَfromالنُّعْمَانِAn-Nu'manإِلَىtoعَدِيٍّ،Adi,
When he read these verses, he entered upon Chosroes and informed him of what An-Nu'man had done to Adi,
فَغَضِبَso Chosroes became angryكِسْرَىand sentوَبَعَثَa manبِرَجُلٍfrom among hisمِنْMarzbansمَرَازِبَتِهِtoإِلَىAn-Nu'manالنُّعْمَانِto releaseأَنْAdiيُطْلِقَand send himعَدِيّاًto him.وَيَبْعَثَand sendبِهِhimإِلَيْهِ.to him.
so Chosroes became angry and sent a man from among his Marzbans to An-Nu'man to release Adi and send him to him.
فَأَقْبَلَThe messenger set outالرَّسُولُuntil he enteredحَتَّىuponدَخَلَAn-Nu'manإِلَىand deliveredالنُّعْمَانِto himوَأَدَّىthe message ofإِلَيْهِChosroes.رِسَالَةَmessageكِسْرَى.of Chosroes.
The messenger set out until he entered upon An-Nu'man and delivered the message of Chosroes to him.
فَقَالَ:He said:نَعَمْYesأَنَاIأُطْلِقُهُ.will release him.وَدَسَّAnd he secretly sentإِلَىtoعَدِيٍّAdiمَنْsomeone whoقَتَلَهُkilled him
He said: Yes, I will release him. And he secretly sent someone to kill Adi,
ثُمَّthenقَالَhe saidلِلرَّسُولِ:to the messenger:ادْخُلِEnterالسِّجْنَthe prisonحَتَّىso thatتُخْرِجَهُ.you may take him out.
then said to the messenger: Enter the prison so that you may take him out.
فَلَمَّاWhenدَخَلَhe enteredإِلَيْهِitوَجَدَهُhe found himمَيْتاً،dead,فَرَجَعَso he returnedإِلَىtoالنُّعْمَانِAn-Nu'manوَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:
When he entered it, he found him dead, so he returned to An-Nu'man and said to him:
عَجِلْتَYou rushedعَلَيْهِupon himوَقَتَلْتَهُand killed himوَأَنَاand Iمُخْبِرٌwill informكِسْرَىChosroesبِذَلِكَ.of that.
You rushed upon him and killed him, and I am going to inform Chosroes of that.
فَوَصَلَهُSo he rewarded himبِأَلْفِwith a thousandدِينَارٍdinarsوَسَأَلَهُand asked himتَحْسِينَto speak well ofأَمْرِهِhis matterعِنْدَwithكِسْرَى.Chosroes.
So he rewarded him with a thousand dinars and asked him to speak well of his matter with Chosroes.
فَانْصَرَفَThe messenger departedالرَّسُولُand informedفَأَخْبَرَChosroesكِسْرَىof hisبِمَوْتِهِ.death.
The messenger departed and informed Chosroes of his death.
وَكَانَAnd Adi hadلِعَدِيٍّa sonابْنٌwhoيُقَالُwas calledلَهُZaid,زَيْدٌ،so An-Nu'manفَخَافَfearedالنُّعْمَانُfor himselfعَلَىso he fledنَفْسِهِfrom Al-Hiraفَهَرَبَuntil he cameمِنَto Al-Mada'inالْحِيرَةِand enteredحَتَّىuponأَتَىChosroesالْمَدَائِنَand made himselfفَدَخَلَknown to himعَلَىso he brought him closeكِسْرَىand treated himوَتَعَرَّفَwell.لَهُso he broughtفَقَرَّبَهُhim closeوَبَرَّهُ.and treated him well.
And Adi had a son called Zaid. An-Nu'man feared for his life, so he fled from Al-Hira until he came to Al-Mada'in, entered upon Chosroes, made himself known to him, and Chosroes brought him close and treated him well.
فَقَالَHe saidلِكِسْرَىto Chosroesذَاتَoneيَوْمٍ:day:أَيُّهَاOالْمَلِكُKingإِنَّindeedلِعَبْدِكَyour slaveالنُّعْمَانِAn-Nu'manابْنَةًhas a daughterيُقَالُcalledلَهَاHuriqahحُرْقَةُand a sisterوَأُخْتاًnamedتُسَمَّىSuhdaسَعْدَىand a paternal cousinوَابْنَةَnamedعَمٍّLubabتُسَمَّىand there are notلُبَابُin all the regionsوَلَيْسَany betterفِيthan them.جَمِيعِin allالْأَقَالِيمِthe regionsأَحْسَنُmore beautifulمِنْهُنَّ.than them.
He said to Chosroes one day: O King, indeed your slave An-Nu'man has a daughter called Huriqah, a sister named Suhda, and a paternal cousin named Lubab, and there are none more beautiful than them in all the regions.
فَكَتَبَSo Chosroes wroteكِسْرَىto An-Nu'manإِلَىto bringالنُّعْمَانِto meأَنْyour daughterاحْمِلْHuriqahإِلَيَّand your sisterابْنَتَكَSuhdaحُرْقَةَand your paternal cousinوَأُخْتَكَLubabسَعْدَىby the handsوَابْنَۃَof a servantعَمِّكَof his.لُبَابَLubabعَلَىuponيَدَيْhands ofخَادِمٍa servantلَهُ.of his.
So Chosroes wrote to An-Nu'man: Bring to me your daughter Huriqah, your sister Suhda, and your paternal cousin Lubab by the hands of a servant of his.
فَقَالَZaid saidزَيْدٌ:O Kingأَيُّهَاsendالْمَلِكُme withابْعَثْthe eunuch.بِيHe saidمَعَGo forthالْخَصِيِّ.in the name of Godفَقَالَ:and make hasteاخْرُجْwith the women to me.عَلَىuponاسْمِthe name ofاللَّهِGodوَعَجِّلْand make hasteعَلَيَّto meبِالنِّسْوَةِ.with the women.
Zaid said: O King, send me with the eunuch. He said: Go forth in the name of God and make haste with the women to me.
فَخَرَجَاSo the two of them set outحَتَّىuntilقَدِمَاthey arrived atالْحِيرَةَAl-Hiraفَدَخَلَاand enteredعَلَىuponالنُّعْمَانِAn-Nu'manوَدَفَعَاand handedإِلَيْهِto himالْكِتَابَ.the letter.
So the two of them set out until they arrived at Al-Hira, entered upon An-Nu'man, and handed the letter to him.
فَلَمَّاWhenقَرَأَهُhe read itقَالَ:he said:أَمَاIs there notفِيinعَيْنِAinالسَّوَادِAs-Sawadوَفَارِسَand Persiaمَاwhatيُغْنِيsufficesالْمَلِكَthe kingعَنِinstead ofالْعَرَبِيَّاتِthe Arab womenالسُّودِwith darkالْأَبْدَانِbodiesالْحُمْشِand thinالسِّيقَانِ؟shins?
When he read it, he said: Is there not in Ain As-Sawad and Persia what suffices the king instead of the Arab women with dark bodies and thin shins?
فَقَالَSo saidالْخَادِمُthe servantلِزَيْدٍ:to Zaid:مَاWhatيَقُولُisالنُّعْمَانُ؟An-Nu'man saying?قَالَ:He said:يَقُولُ:He says:مَاIs there notفِيinبَقَرِthe cattleفَارِسَof Persiaوَالسَّوَادِand As-Sawadمَاwhatيُغْنِيsufficesالْمَلِكَthe kingعَنِinstead ofالْعَرَبِيَّاتِ؟the Arab women?
So the servant said to Zaid: What is An-Nu'man saying? He said: He says: Is there not in the cattle of Persia and As-Sawad what suffices the king instead of the Arab women?
فَخَرَجَSo the servant departedالْخَادِمُuntil he cameحَتَّىto Chosroesأَتَىand informed himكِسْرَىof whatفَأَخْبَرَهُhe heardبِمَاfrom An-Nu'manسَمِعَهُand said:مِنَO Kingالنُّعْمَانِindeedوَقَالَ:the dogأَيُّهَاwhom you sentالْمَلِكُme toإِنَّhas grown fatالْكَلْبَand oversteppedالَّذِيhis bounds.بَعَثْتَsentبِيmeإِلَيْهِto himقَدْhasسَمِنَgrown fatوَتَعَدَّىand transgressedطَوْرَهُ.his bounds.
So the servant departed until he came to Chosroes and informed him of what he heard from An-Nu'man, saying: O King, indeed the dog whom you sent me to has grown fat and overstepped his bounds.
فَوَقَعَThat fellذَلِكَintoفِيthe heart ofقَلْبِChosroesكِسْرَىand he became angryوَغَضِبَwith An-Nu'manعَلَىand calledالنُّعْمَانِIyas bin QabisahوَدَعَاAl-Kananiإِيَاسَand appointed himبْنَto takeقَبِيصَةَthe place ofالْكِنَانِيّٖAn-Nu'manوَوَلَاهُand commanded himمَكَانَto shackleالنُّعْمَانِAn-Nu'manفَأَمَرَهُin ironأَنْand send himيُكَبِّلَto him.النُّعْمَانَAn-Nu'manبِالْحَدِيدِin ironوَيَبْعَثَand send himبِهِto him.إِلَيْهِ،to him.
That weighed heavily on Chosroes's heart, and he grew angry with An-Nu'man, summoned Iyas bin Qabisah Al-Kanani, and appointed him in An-Nu'man's place, commanding him to shackle An-Nu'man in iron and send him to him.
فَبَلَغَThat reachedذَلِكَAn-Nu'manالنُّعْمَانَso he entrustedفَاسْتَوْدَعَhis familyأَهْلَهُand childrenوَوَلَدَهُand treasuresوَخَزَائِنَهُand weaponsوَسِلَاحَهُand his daughterوَابْنَتَهُHuriqahحُرْقَةَand his horsesوَخَيْلَهُto Hani binعِنْدَMasudهَانِئِAl-Mazdalafiبْنِthen he went outمَسْعُودٍuntil he cameالْمُزْدَلِفِto Al-Mada'inثُمَّand metخَرَجَZaid bin Adiحَتَّىand said to him:أَتَىO son ofالْمَدَائِنَthe shameless womanفَلَقِيَif I surviveزَيْدَfor youبْنَI will surely join youعَدِيٍّto your father!فَقَالَZaid saidلَهُ:to him:يَاOابْنَson ofاللَّخْنَاءِthe unchaste womanلَئِنْifبَقِيتُI remainلَكَfor youلَأُلْحِقَنَّكَI will surely attach youبِأَبِيكَ!to your father!فَقَالَZaid saidلَهُto him:زَيْدٌ:As for meأَمَّاby AllahوَاللَّهِI have builtبَنَيْتُfor you withلَكَthe kingعِنْدَa structureالْمَلِكِthat will neverبِنْيَةًbe set rightلَاeverتَصْلُحُafter itبَعْدَهَاever.أَبَداً.ever.
That reached An-Nu'man, so he entrusted his family, children, treasures, weapons, daughter Huriqah, and horses to Hani bin Masud Al-Mazdalafi, then went out until he came to Al-Mada'in and met Zaid bin Adi, who said to him: O son of the unchaste woman, if I survive for you, I will surely join you to your father! Zaid said to him: As for me, by Allah, I have built for you with the king a structure that will never be set right ever after.
ثُمَّThenدَخَلَhe enteredعَلَىuponكِسْرَىChosroesوَدَخَلَand Zaid enteredزَيْدٌafter him.بَعْدَهُ.after him.
Then he entered upon Chosroes, and Zaid entered after him.
فَقَالَZaid saidزَيْدٌ:O Kingأَيُّهَاindeedالْمَلِكُthis slaveإِنَّwhen he sitsهَذَاon his couchالْعَبْدَand placesإِذَاthe crownجَلَسَon his headعَلَىand callsسَرِيرِهِfor his drinkوَوَضَعَhe does not thinkالتَّاجَthat you haveعَلَىany authorityرَأْسِهِover him.وَدَعَاSo Chosroesبِشَرَابِهِcommandedلَمْthat An-Nu'manيَظُنَّbe thrownأَنَّbetween the feetلَكَof the elephants.عَلَيْهِSo that was doneسُلْطَاناً.to himفَأَمَرَand the elephantsكِسْرَىtrampled himبِالنُّعْمَانِand killed himأَنْand that instigatedيُلْقَىthe Battleبَيْنَof Dhi Qar.أَرْجُلِfeet ofالْفِيلَةِ،the elephants,فَفُعِلَso it was doneبِهِto himذَلِكَthatفَدَاسَتْهُand they trampled himالْفِيلَةُthe elephantsوَقَتَلَتْهُ،and killed him,وَهَيَّجَand that instigatedذَلِكَthatحَرْبَthe warذِيof Dhiقَارٍ.Qar.
Zaid said: O King, indeed this slave, when he sits on his couch, places the crown on his head, and calls for his drink, does not think that you have any authority over him. So Chosroes commanded that An-Nu'man be thrown between the feet of the elephants. That was done to him, and the elephants trampled him and killed him, and that instigated the Battle of Dhi Qar.
