Then Ubaydullah bin Ziyad sent word to Umar bin Saad: Fight them.
فَقَالَSo saidالْحُسَيْنُ،Hussein,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ:be peace:يَاOعُمَرُUmarاخْتَرْchooseمَنِّيfrom meإِحْدَىone ofثَلَاثٍ:three:
Hussein, peace be upon him, said: O Umar, choose for me one of three things:

you let me return the way I came, or if you refuse this, send me to the Turks so I may fight them until I die, or if you refuse this, send me to Yazid so I may place my hand in his hand. And he sent word to Ibn Ziyad concerning that.
فَهَمَّSo he intendedأَنْtoيُسَيِّرَهُsend himإِلَىtoيَزِيدَ،Yazid,فَقَالَso saidلَهُto himشِمْرُShimrبْنُson ofذِيDhiجَوْشَنٍ:Jawshan:قَدْIndeedأَمْكَنَكَmade capableاللَّهُAllahمِنْهُ،you over him,أَوْorقَالَ:he said:مِنْoverعَدُوِّكَ،your enemy,وَتُسَيِّرُهُand you send himإِلَىtoالْأَمَانِsafetyإِلَّاunlessأَنْthatيَنْزِلَhe submitsعَلَىtoحُكْمِكَ!your judgment!
So he intended to send him to Yazid, but Shimr bin Dhi Jawshan said to him: Allah has given you power over him—or he said: over your enemy—and you send him to safety unless he submits to your judgment!
فَأَرْسَلَSo he sentإِلَيْهِto himبِذَلِكَ،with that,فَقَالَ:so he said:لَاNoحُبّاًout of loveوَلَاnorكَرَامَةًhonorانْزِلْsubmitعَلَىtoحُكْمِthe judgment ofابْنِthe son ofسُمَيَّةَ.Sumayyah.
So he sent word to him about that. He said: No love and no honor, submit to the judgment of the son of Sumayyah.
وَكَانَAnd there wasمَعَwithعُمَرَUmarبْنِson ofسَعْدٍSaadقَرِيبٌcloseمِنْtoثَلَاثِينَthirtyرَجُلاًmenمِنْfromأَهْلِthe people ofالْكُوفَةِKufa
And there were with Umar bin Saad close to thirty men from the people of Kufa,
فَقَالُوا:so they said:يَعْرِضُOffersعَلَيْكُمْto youابْنُthe son ofابْنَةِthe daughter ofرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,عَلَيْهِupon himوَعَلَىand uponآلِهِhis familyالسَّلَامُ،be peace,ثَلَاثَthreeخِصَالٍqualities/termsلَاdo you notتَقْبَلُونَacceptمِنْهَاfrom themشَيْئاً!anything!
so they said: The son of the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, upon him and his family be peace, offers you three terms and you do not accept any of them!
فَتَحَوَّلُواSo they shiftedمَعَwithالْحُسَيْنِ،Hussein,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,فَقَاتَلُواand foughtحَتَّىuntilقُتِلُواthey were killedوَقُتِلَand was killedالْحُسَيْنُ،Hussein,رَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith himعَنْهُ،andوَجَمِيعُallمَنْof those whoمَعَهُ،were with him,رَحِمَهُمُmay Allah have mercy uponاللَّهُ،them,وَحُمِلَand was carriedرَأْسُهُhis headإِلَىtoعُبَيْدِUbaydاللَّهِAllahبْنِson ofزِيَادٍZiyadفَوُضِعَand it was placedبَيْنَbetweenيَدَيْهِhis handsعَلَىuponتِرْسٍa shieldفَبَعَثَso he sentبِهِitإِلَىtoيَزِيدَ،Yazid,فَأَمَرَso he orderedبِغَسْلِهِits washingوَجَعْلِهِand its placementفِيinحَرِيرَةٍsilkوَضَرَبَand pitchedعَلَيْهِover itخَيْمَةًa tentوَوَكَّلَand assignedبِهِover itخَمْسِينَfiftyرَجُلاً.men.
So they went over to Hussein, peace be upon him, and fought until they were killed, and Hussein, may Allah be pleased with him, was killed along with all who were with him, may Allah have mercy upon them. His head was carried to Ubaydullah bin Ziyad and placed before him upon a shield, and he sent it to Yazid, who ordered that it be washed, placed in silk, a tent be pitched over it, and fifty men be assigned to guard it.
فَقَالَSo saidوَاحِدٌoneمِنْهُمْ:of them:نَمْتُI sleptوَأَنَاwhile I wasمُفَكِّرٌreflectingفِيuponيَزِيدَYazidوَقَتْلِهِand his killing ofالْحُسَيْنَ،Hussein,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,فَبَيْنَاso whileأَنَاIكَذَلِكَwas like thatإِذْwhenرَأَيْتُI sawسَحَابَةًa cloudخَضْرَاءَgreenفِيهَاin itنُورٌlightقَدْthatأَضَاءَتْilluminatedمَاwhatبَيْنَis betweenالْخَافِقَيْنِthe two horizonsوَسَمِعْتُand I heardصَهِيلَthe neighing ofالْخَيْلِhorsesوَمُنَادِياًand a callerيُنَادِي:calling out:يَاOأَحْمَدُAhmadاهْبِطْ،descend,
One of them said: I fell asleep while reflecting upon Yazid and his killing of Hussein, peace be upon him. While I was like that, I saw a green cloud containing light that illuminated what is between the two horizons, and I heard the neighing of horses and a caller calling out: O Ahmad, descend!
فَهَبَطَSo descendedرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah send blessingsاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,وَمَعَهُand with him wereجَمَاعَةٌa groupمِنَofالْأَنْبِيَاءِthe prophetsوَالْمَلَائِكَةِand the angelsفَدَخَلَso he enteredالْخَيْمَةَthe tentوَأَخَذَand tookالرَّأْسَthe headفَجَعَلَand beganيُقَبِّلُهُkissing itوَيَبْكِيand weepingوَيَضُمُّهُand clasping itإِلَىtoصَدْرِهِ،his chest,
So the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, descended, and with him were a group of prophets and angels. He entered the tent, took the head, and began kissing it, weeping, and clasping it to his chest.
