فَلَمَّاSo whenمَنَّHe bestowed favorعَلَيْكَupon youبِالْعَفْوِwith pardon
So when He bestowed favor upon you with pardon and relaxed your chokehold after it tightened upon you and you choked on your saliva, do not sit with us in the seat of the people of gratitude, but rather you equal us and compete with us while we are among those whom no disgrace overtakes and no shame attaches!
وَأَرْخَىand relaxedخِنَاقَكَyour chokehold

ثُمَّThenالتَفَتَhe turnedإِلَىtoزِيَادٍZiyadفَقَالَand said
Then he turned to Ziyad and said: And what are you, O Ziyad, and Quraysh? I do not recognize for you therein a sound origin, nor a growing branch, nor an established ancient lineage, nor a noble plant.
وَمَاAnd whatأَنْتَare youيَاOزِيَادُZiyadوَقُرَيْشاًand Quraysh?

بَلْRatherكَانَتْwasأُمُّكَyour motherبَغِيًّاan adulteressتَدَاوَلَهَاshared among herرِجَالُmenقُرَيْشٍof Qurayshوَفُجَّارُand the dissoluteالْعَرَبِof the Arabs
Rather, your mother was an adulteress shared among the men of Quraysh and the dissolute of the Arabs. When she gave birth, the Arabs did not know a father for you, so this one claimed you—meaning Muawiyah—after the death of his father.
فَلَمَّاSo whenوَلَدَتْshe gave birthلَمْdid notتَعْرِفْknowلَكَfor youالْعَرَبُthe Arabsوَالِدًاa father
When she gave birth, the Arabs did not know a father for you, so this one claimed you—meaning Muawiyah—after the death of his father.
فَادَّعَاكَSo claimed youهَذَاthis oneيَعْنِيmeaningمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyahبَعْدَafterمَمَاتِthe deathأَبِيهِof his father

مَاWhatلَكَdo you have ofافْتِخَارٍboasting
What boasting do you have? Sumayyah suffices you, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, suffices us, and my father Ali ibn Abi Talib, the master of the believers who did not turn back on his heels, and my uncle Hamza, the master of the martyrs, and Ja'far the flyer, and I and my brother are the masters of the youths of the people of Paradise!
تَكْفِيكَSuffices youسُمَيَّةُSumayyahوَيَكْفِينَاand suffices usرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِof Allahصَلَّىmay Allah blessاللَّهُHimعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace

ثُمَّThenالتَفَتَhe turnedإِلَىtoابْنِthe sonعَبَّاسٍof Abbasفَقَالَand said
Then he turned to Ibn Abbas and said: O cousin, they are merely weak birds upon which a falcon swooped.
يَاOابْنَsonالْعَمِّof the uncleإِنَّمَاthey are merelyهِيَtheyبُغَاثُweak birdsالطَّيْرِof the birdsانْقَضَّswoopedعَلَيْهَاupon themأَجْدَلُa falcon
O cousin, they are merely weak birds upon which a falcon swooped.
فَأَرَادَSo wantedابْنُIbnعَبَّاسٍAbbasأَنْtoيَتَكَلَّمَspeak
Ibn Abbas wanted to speak, but Muawiyah adjured him to stop, so he stopped. Then they both left.
فَأَقْسَمَand adjuredعَلَيْهِupon himمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahأَنْtoيَكُفَّrefrainفَكَفَّso he refrained

ثُمَّThenخَرَجَاthey two went out
Then they both left.
فَقَالَMuawiyah saidمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahأَجَادَSpoke wellعَمْرٌوAmrالْكَلَامَin speechلَوْلَاwere it not thatأَنَّthatحُجَّتَهُhis argumentدَحَضَتْwas refuted
Muawiyah said: Amr spoke well were it not that his argument was refuted, and Marwan spoke well were it not that he retreated.
وَتَكَلَّمَAnd spokeمَرْوَانُMarwanلَوْلَاwere it not thatأَنَّهُheنَكَصَretreated
and Marwan spoke well were it not that he retreated.
ثُمَّThenالتَفَتَhe turnedإِلَىtoزِيَادٍZiyadوَقَالَand said
Then he turned to Ziyad and said: What prompted you to debate him?
مَاWhatدَعَاكَprompted youإِلَىtoمُحَاوَرَتِهِdebating him?

مَاYou wereكُنْتَnotإِلَّاexceptكَالْحَجَلِlike the partridgeفِيinكَفِّthe palm ofالْبَازِيthe falcon
You were nothing but like the partridge in the palm of the falcon.
فَقَالَAmr saidعَمْرٌوAmrأَلَّاWhy did you notرَمَيْتَshootمِنْfromوَرَائِنَاbehind us?
Amr said: Why did you not shoot from behind us?
قَالَMuawiyah saidمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahإِذًاThenكُنْتُI would have beenشَرِيكَكُمْyour partnerفِيinالْجَهْلِignorance
Muawiyah said: Then I would have been your partner in ignorance.
أَفَاخِرُShall I boast againstرَجُلًاa manرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِof Allahجَدُّهُis his grandfather
Shall I boast against a man whose grandfather is the Messenger of Allah—and he is the master of those who passed and those who remain—and his mother is Fatimah al-Zahra, the mistress of the women of the worlds?
وَهُوَand heسَيِّدُis the masterمَنْof those whoمَضَىpassedوَمَنْand those whoبَقِيَremain

وَأُمُّهُand his motherفَاطِمَةُFatimahالزَّهْرَاءُal-Zahraسَيِّدَةُmistressنِسَاءِof the womenالْعَالَمِينَof the worlds?

ثُمَّThenقَالَhe saidلِعَمْرٍوto Amr
Then he said to Amr: By Allah, if the people of Ash-Sham were to hear of it, it would indeed be the sheer disgrace.
وَاللَّهِBy Allahلَئِنْifسَمِعَhearsبِهِof itأَهْلُthe peopleالشَّامِof Ash-Shamلَهِيَit would indeed beالسُّوْءَةُthe disgraceالسَّوْءَاءُthe sheer
By Allah, if the people of Ash-Sham were to hear of it, it would indeed be the sheer disgrace.
فَقَالَAmr saidعَمْرٌوAmrلَقَدْHe has indeedأَبْقَىsparedعَلَيْكَyou
Amr said: He has indeed spared you, but he ground Marwan like the grinding of the handmill with its lower stone, and trampled him with the trampling of the mature camel and the tick with his hoof.
وَلَكِنَّهُbut heطَحَنَgroundمَرْوَانَMarwanطَحْنَthe grindingالرَّحَىof the handmillبِثِفَالِهَاwith its lower stone

وَوَطِئَهَاand trampled himوَطْءَwith the tramplingالْبَازِلِof the mature camelالْقُرَادَthe tickبِمِنْسِمِهِwith his hoof

فَقَالَZiyad saidزِيَادٌZiyadقَدْHe hasوَاللَّهِby Allahفَعَلَdone so
Ziyad said: By Allah, he has indeed done so, but Muawiyah refuses anything other than instigating trouble between us and them.
وَلَكِنَّbutمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyahيَأْبَىrefusesإِلَّاexceptالْإِغْرَاءَinstigating troubleبَيْنَنَاbetween usوَبَيْنَهُمْand them
but Muawiyah refuses anything other than instigating trouble between us and them.
لَاAssuredlyجَرَمَnoوَاللَّهِby AllahلَاI will notشَهِدْتُwitnessمَجْلِسًاa gatheringيَكُونَانِwhere they two areفِيهِin itإِلَّاexcept thatكُنْتُI will beمَعَهُمَاwith them twoعَلَىagainstمَنْwhoeverفَاخَرَهُمَاboasts against them two
Assuredly, by Allah, I will not witness a gathering where they two are present without being with them against whoever boasts against them.
فَخَلَاSo was aloneابْنُIbnعَبَّاسٍAbbasبِالْحَسَنِwith Al-Hasan
Then Ibn Abbas was alone with Al-Hasan, kissed him between his eyes, and said: I ransom you, O cousin, by Allah, your sea never ceased to surge and you kept charging until you healed me of the sons of adulteresses.
فَقَبَّلَand he kissedبَيْنَbetweenعَيْنَيْهِhis eyesوَقَالَand said

أَفْدِيكَI ransom youيَاOابْنَson ofعَمٍّmy uncleوَاللَّهِby Allahمَاneverزَالَceasedبَحْرُكَyour seaيَزْخَرُto surge
I ransom you, O cousin, by Allah, your sea never ceased to surge and you kept charging until you healed me of the sons of adulteresses.
وَأَنْتَwhile youتَصُولُkept chargingحَتَّىuntilشَفَيْتَنِيyou healed meمِنْofأَوْلَادِthe sonsالْبَغَايَاof adulteresses

ثُمَّThenإِنَّindeedالْحَسَنَAl-Hasanرَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwithعَنْهُhimغَابَabsented himselfأَيَّامًاfor days
Then Al-Hasan, may Allah be pleased with him, was absent for days, then returned until he entered upon Muawiyah while Abdullah ibn al-Zubair was with him.
ثُمَّthenرَجَعَreturnedحَتَّىuntilدَخَلَhe enteredعَلَىuponمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyahوَعِنْدَهُand with him wasعَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِibnبْنُal-Zubairالزُّبَيْرِal-Zubair
then returned until he entered upon Muawiyah while Abdullah ibn al-Zubair was with him.
فَقَالَMuawiyah saidمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahيَاOأَبَاAbuمُحَمَّدٍMuhammadإِنِّيindeed Iأَظُنُّكَthink youتَعِبًاtiredنَصِبًاexhausted
Muawiyah said: O Abu Muhammad, I think you are tired and exhausted, so go to the house and rest yourself therein.
فَأْتِso go toالْمَنْزِلَthe houseفَأَرِحْand restنَفْسَكَyourselfفِيهِtherein
so go to the house and rest yourself therein.
فَقَامَAl-Hasan stood upالْحَسَنُAl-Hasan
Al-Hasan stood up, and when he went out, Muawiyah said to Abdullah ibn al-Zubair: If you were to boast against Al-Hasan, for you are the son of the disciple of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the son of his aunt, and for your father in Islam there is an ample share.
فَلَمَّاAnd whenخَرَجَhe went outقَالَsaidمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahلِعَبْدِto Abdullahاللَّهِibnبْنِal-Zubairالزُّبَيْرِal-Zubair

لَوْIfافْتَخَرْتَyou boastedعَلَىagainstالْحَسَنِAl-Hasanفَإِنَّكَfor you areابْنُthe sonحَوَارِيِّof the discipleرَسُولِof the Messengerاللَّهِof Allahصَلَّىmay Allah blessاللَّهُhimعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace
If you were to boast against Al-Hasan, for you are the son of the disciple of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the son of his aunt, and for your father in Islam there is an ample share.
وَابْنُand the sonعَمَّتِهِof his auntوَلِأَبِيكَand for your fatherفِيinالْإِسْلَامِIslamنَصِيبٌa shareوَافِرٌample

فَقَالَIbn al-Zubair saidابْنُIbnالزُّبَيْرِal-ZubairأَنَاI amلَهُfor that
Ibn al-Zubair said: I am up for it! So he went back searching his arguments all night.
فَرَجَعَSo he went backوَهُوَwhile heيَطْلُبُwas searchingلَيْلَتَهُall nightالْحُجَجَarguments

فَلَمَّاWhenأَصْبَحَmorning cameدَخَلَhe enteredعَلَىuponمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyah
When morning came, he entered upon Muawiyah, and Al-Hasan came. Muawiyah greeted him and asked him about his overnight stay.
وَجَاءَand cameالْحَسَنُAl-Hasanفَحَيَّاهُand he greeted himمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahوَسَأَلَهُand asked himعَنْaboutمَبِيتِهِhis overnight stay
and Al-Hasan came. Muawiyah greeted him and asked him about his overnight stay.
فَقَالَHe saidخَيْرُthe bestمَبِيتٍovernight stayوَأَكْرَمُand the noblestمُسْتَفَاضٍabundant resting place
He said: The best overnight stay and the noblest abundant resting place.
فَلَمَّاWhenاسْتَوَىhe settledفِيinمَجْلِسِهِhis gatheringقَالَsaidابْنُIbnالزُّبَيْرِal-Zubair
When he settled in his gathering, Ibn al-Zubair said: Were you not a coward in war, un-bold, you would not have surrendered the command to Muawiyah, and you would not have needed to pierce through the plains and cross the deserts seeking his favor and standing at his door.
لَوْلَاWere it not thatأَنَّكَyouخَوَّارٌa cowardفِيinالْحَرْبِwarغَيْرُun-مِقْدَامٍbold

and you would not have needed to pierce through the plains and cross the deserts seeking his favor and standing at his door.
تَطْلُبُseekingمَعْرُوفَهُhis favorوَتَقُومُand standingبِبَابِهِat his door
seeking his favor and standing at his door.
وَكُنْتَAnd you wereحَرِيًّاworthyأَنْtoلَاnotتَفْعَلَdoذَلِكَthat
And you were worthy not to do that while you are the son of Ali in his might and bravery.
وَأَنْتَwhile youابْنُare the sonعَلِيٍّof Aliفِيinبَأْسِهِhis mightوَنَجْدَتِهِand bravery

فَمَاSo I do notأَدْرِيknowمَاwhatالَّذِيit was thatحَمَلَكَcarried youعَلَىtoذَلِكَthat
So I do not know what drove you to that: a weak opinion or a feeble disposition?
أَضْعَفُA weakرَأْيٍopinionأَمْorوَهْنُfeebleنَحِيزَةٍdisposition?

فَمَاAnd I do notأَظُنُّthinkلَكَfor youمَخْرَجًاan exitمِنْfromهَاتَيْنِthese twoالْخَلَّتَيْنِtraits
And I do not think you have an exit from these two traits.
أَمَّاAs forوَاللَّهِby Allahلَوْifاسْتَجْمَعَhad gatheredلِيfor meمَاwhatاسْتَجْمَعَgatheredلَكَfor you
As for me, by Allah, if there had gathered for me what gathered for you, you would have known that I am the son of Al-Zubair and that I do not retreat from heroes.
لَعَلِمْتَyou would have knownأَنِّيthat Iابْنُam the sonالزُّبَيْرِof Al-Zubair
you would have known that I am the son of Al-Zubair and that I do not retreat from heroes.
وَأَنِّيand that Iلَاdo notأَنْكِصُretreatعَنِfromالْأَبْطَالِthe heroes
and that I do not retreat from heroes.
وَكَيْفَAnd howلَاcouldأَكُونُI beكَذَلِكَthus
And how could I not be thus while my grandmother is Safiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib, and my father is Al-Zubair, the disciple of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the most stern of people in might and the noblest of them in lineage during the Jahiliyyah, and the most obedient of them to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?
وَجَدَّتِيwhile my grandmotherصَفِيَّةُSafiyyahبِنْتُdaughter ofعَبْدِAbdulمُطَّلِبٍMuttalib
while my grandmother is Safiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib, and my father is Al-Zubair, the disciple of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the most stern of people in might and the noblest of them in lineage during the Jahiliyyah, and the most obedient of them to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?

وَأَشَدُّand the most sternالنَّاسِof peopleبَأْسًاin mightوَأَكْرَمُهُمْand the noblest of themحَسَبًاin lineageفِيinالْجَاهِلِيَّةِthe Jahiliyyah
and the most stern of people in might and the noblest of them in lineage during the Jahiliyyah, and the most obedient of them to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?
وَأَطْوَعُهُمْand the most obedient of themلِرَسُولِto the Messengerاللَّهِof Allahصَلَّىmay Allah blessاللَّهُhimعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace
and the most obedient of them to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?
فَالْتَفَتَSo turnedإِلَيْهِto himالْحَسَنُAl-Hasanوَقَالَand said
Al-Hasan turned to him and said: As for you, by Allah, were it not that the Banu Umayyah attribute me to inability in speech, I would have refrained from you out of disregard, but I will clarify that to you so that you may know that I am neither stuttering nor dull of tongue.
أَمَّاAs forوَاللَّهِby Allahلَوْلَاwere it not thatأَنَّthatبَنِيthe BanuأُمَيَّةَUmayyahتَنْسُبُنِيattribute meإِلَىtoالْعَجْزِinabilityعَنِinالْمَقَالِspeech

إِيَّايَMeتُعَيِّرُdo you tauntوَعَلَيَّand against meتَفْتَخِرُdo you boast?
Do you taunt me and boast against me while your grandfather had no house in the Jahiliyyah nor any honor, until my grandmother Safiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib married him?
وَلَمْAnd there was notيَكُنْforلِجَدِّكَyour grandfatherبَيْتٌa houseفِيinالْجَاهِلِيَّةِthe Jahiliyyahوَلَاnorمَكْرُمَةٌany honor
And there was not for your grandfather a house in the Jahiliyyah nor any honor, until my grandmother Safiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib married him?
فَزَوَّجَتْهُso married himجَدَّتِيmy grandmotherصَفِيَّةُSafiyyahبِنْتُdaughter ofعَبْدِAbdulمُطَّلِبٍMuttalib
until my grandmother Safiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib married him so he towered over all the Arabs thereby and gained nobility through her place.

فَكَيفَHow thenتُفَاخِرُdo you boast againstمَنْone whoهُوَisمِنَofالْقِلَادَةِthe necklaceوَاسِطَتُهَاits central bead
How then do you boast against one who is the central bead of the necklace and the masters among the nobles?
وَمِنَand ofالْأَشْرَافِthe noblesسَادَتُهَاtheir masters?

نَحْنُWe areأَكْرَمُthe noblestأَهْلِof the peopleالْأَرْضِof the earthزَنْدًاin origin
We are the noblest people on earth in origin; for us is the piercing honor and the prevailing generosity.
لَنَاfor us isالشَّرَفُthe honorالثَّاقِبُpiercingوَالْكَرَمُand the generosityالْغَالِبُprevailing

ثُمَّThenتَزْعُمُyou claimأَنِّيthat Iسَلَّمْتُsurrenderedالْأَمْرَthe commandلِمُعَاوِيَةَto Muawiyah
Then you claim that I surrendered the command to Muawiyah. How could that be—woe to you—when I am the son of the bravest of the Arabs and Fatimah, the mistress of the women of the worlds and the best of handmaidens, bore me?
فَكَيفَHowيَكُونُcouldذَلِكَthatوَيْحَكَbe—woe to you—كَذَلِكَthus

وَأَنَاwhile Iابْنُam the sonأَشْجَعِof the bravestالْعَرَبِof the Arabs

وَقَدْand hasوَلَدَتْنِيborne meفَاطِمَةُFatimahسَيِّدَةُmistressنِسَاءِof the womenالْعَالَمِينَof the worldsوَخَيْرُand the best ofالْإِمَاءِhandmaidens

لَمْI did notأَفْعَلْdoذَلِكَthatوَيْحَكَwoe to youجُبْنًاout of cowardiceوَلَاnorضُعْفًاweakness
I did not do that—woe to you—out of cowardice nor weakness, but someone like you pledged allegiance to me while he sought me with kindness and coaxed me with affection.
وَلَكِنَّهُbutبَايَعَنِيpledged allegiance to meمِثْلُكَsomeone like youوَهُوَwhile heيَطْلُبُنِيsought meبِبِرَّةٍwith kindnessوَيُدَاجِينِيand coaxed me withالْمَوَدَّةَaffection
someone like you pledged allegiance to me while he sought me with kindness and coaxed me with affection.
وَلَمْAnd I did notأَثِقْtrustبِنُصْرَتِهِin his supportلِأَنَّكُمْbecause youأَهْلُare a peopleبَيْتِof a houseغَدْرٍof betrayal
And I did not trust in his support because you are a household of betrayal.
وَكَيْفَAnd howلَاcouldيَكُونُit beكَمَاasأَقُولُI say
And how could it not be as I say, when your father pledged allegiance to the Commander of the Faithful, then broke his pledge, turned back on his heels, and snatched away a cushion from the cushions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to mislead the people thereby?
وَقَدْwhenبَايَعَpledged allegianceأَبُوكَyour fatherأَمِيرَto the Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithful
when your father pledged allegiance to the Commander of the Faithful, then broke his pledge, turned back on his heels, and snatched away a cushion from the cushions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to mislead the people thereby?
ثُمَّthenنَكَثَbrokeبَيْعَتَهُhis pledgeوَنَكَصَand turned backعَلَىonعَقِبَيْهِhis heels
then broke his pledge, turned back on his heels, and snatched away a cushion from the cushions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to mislead the people thereby?
وَاخْتَدَعَand snatched awayحَشِيَّةًa cushionمِنْfromحَشَايَاcushionsرَسُولِof the Messengerاللَّهِof Allahصَلَّىmay Allah blessاللَّهُhimعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace
and snatched away a cushion from the cushions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to mislead the people thereby?
لِيُضِلَّto misleadبِهَاtherebyالنَّاسَthe people

فَلَمَّاThen whenدَلَفَhe advancedنَحْوَtowardالْأَعِنَّةِthe reins
Then when he advanced toward the reins and saw the gleam of the spearheads, he was killed abandoned with no helper, and you were brought as a captive trampled by the champions with their hooves and by the horses with their hoofs.
وَرَأَىand sawبَرِيقَthe gleamالْأَسِنَّةِof the spearheads

فَغَصِصْتَso you chokedبِرِيقِكَon your saliva

and squatted on your heels like a dog when the fierce lionesses surround it?
فَنَحْنُSo we are
