وَلَقِيَAnd metعَمْرُوAmrبْنُson ofالْعَاصِAl-AasالْحَسَنَAl-Hasanبْنَson ofعَلِيٍّ،Ali,رَحِمَهُmay Allah have mercy onاللَّهُ،him,فِيwhile inالطَّوَافِthe Tawafفَقَالَ:and said:
Amr ibn al-Aas met al-Hasan ibn Ali, may Allah have mercy on him, during Tawaf and said:
يَاOحَسَنُHasan,أَزَعَمْتَdo you claimأَنَّthatالدِّينَthe religionلَاdoes notيَقُومُstandإِلَّاexceptبِكَthrough youوَبِأَبِيكَ؟and through your father?
O Hasan, do you claim that the religion is only established through you and your father?
فَقَدْFor indeedرَأَيْتُI have seenاللَّهَAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Mightyأَقَامَهُestablish itبِمُعَاوِيَةَthrough Muawiyah
For indeed I have seen Allah, Majestic and Mighty, establish it through Muawiyah,
فَجَعَلَهُmaking itرَاسِيًاfirmبَعْدَafterمَيْلِهِits leaningوَبَيِّنًاand clearبَعْدَafterخَفَائِهِ.its obscurity.
making it firm after its leaning and clear after its obscurity.
أَفَرَضِيَDidاللَّهُAllah approve ofقَتْلَthe killing ofعُثْمَانَUthmanأَمْorمِنَis it fromالْحَقِّthe truthأَنْthatتُدُورَyou circleبِالْبَيْتِthe Houseكَمَاjust asيَدُورُrevolvesالْجَمَلُthe camelبِالطَّحِينِ؟with the flour mill?
Did Allah approve of the killing of Uthman, or is it from the truth that you circle the House just as the camel revolves with the flour mill?
عَلَيْكَUpon you areثِيَابٌgarmentsكَغِرْقِئِlike the inner skin ofالْبَيْضِan eggوَأَنْتَwhile you areقَاتِلُthe killer ofعُثْمَانَ،Uthman,وَاللَّهِand by Allahإِنَّهُindeed it isلَأَلَمُّmore gatheringلِلشَّعِثِof the scatteredوَأَسْهَلُand easierلِلْوَعِثِfor the rough pathأَنْthatيُورِدَكَbrings youمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahحِيَاضَto the watering basins ofأَبِيكَ.your father.
You wear garments like the inner skin of an egg while you are the killer of Uthman, and by Allah, it is more gathering for the scattered and easier for the rough path that Muawiyah brings you to the watering basins of your father.
فَقَالَThen saidالْحَسَنُ،Al-Hasan,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ:be peace:إِنَّIndeedلِأَهْلِfor the people ofالنَّارِthe Fireعَلَامَاتٍare signsيُعْرَفُونَby which they are knownبِهَاthereby,وَهِيَand they areالْإِلْحَادُdeviationلِأَوْلِيَاءِregarding the allies ofاللَّهِAllahوَالْمُوَالَاةُand befriendingلِأَعْدَاءِthe enemies ofاللَّهِ.Allah.
Then al-Hasan, peace be upon him, said: Indeed, the people of the Fire have signs by which they are known, and they are deviating from the allies of Allah and befriending the enemies of Allah.
وَاللَّهِAnd by Allahإِنَّكَverily youلَتَعْلَمُknowأَنَّthatعَلِيًّا،Ali,رَضِيَmay Allah be pleased withاللَّهُHimعَنْهُ،him,لَمْdid notيَتَرَيَّبْdoubtفِيinالْأَمْرِthe matterوَلَمْand did notيَشُكَّdoubtفِيinاللَّهِAllahطَرْفَةَfor the blinking ofعَيْنٍ.an eye.
And by Allah, you know well that Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, did not doubt in the matter and did not doubt Allah for the blinking of an eye.
وَايْمُAnd by the oath ofاللَّهِAllahلَتَنْتَهِيَنَّyou will surely desistيَاOابْنَson ofأُمِّthe mother ofعَمْرٍوAmrأَوْorلَأَقْرَعَنَّI will surely strikeجَبِينَكَyour foreheadبِكَلَامٍwith wordsتَبْقَىwhose mark will remainسِمَتُهُupon youعَلَيْكَupon youمَاas long asحَيِيتَ!you live!
And by Allah, O son of Umm Amr, you will surely desist or I will strike your forehead with words whose mark will remain upon you as long as you live!
فَإِيَّاكَSo beware ofوَالْإِبْرَازَchallengingعَلَيَّmeفَإِنِّيfor indeed Iمِنْofمَنْthose whomعَرَفْتَyou knowلَسْتُI am notبِضَعِيفِof weakالْغَمْزَةِgripوَلَاnorبِهَشِّof fragileالْمَشَاشَةِboneوَلَاnorبِمَرِيءِof easily digestibleالْمَأْكَلَةِ،food,
So beware of challenging me, for I am one whom you know: I am not weak in grip, nor fragile in bone, nor easily swallowed food.
وَإِنِّيAnd indeed I amمِنْfromقُرَيْشٍQurayshكَأَوْسَطِlike the middleالْقِلَادَةِ،of the necklace,يُعْرَفُknown isحَسَبِيmy nobilityوَلَاand I do notأَدَّعِيclaimلِغَيْرِother thanأَبِي،my father,
And I am among Quraysh like the middle bead of a necklace; my nobility is known and I do not claim other than my father.
وَقَدْAnd indeedتَحَاكَمَتْsought judgmentفِيكَregarding youرِجَالُmen ofقُرَيْشٍQurayshفَغَلَبَand overcameعَلَيْكَyouأَلْأَمُهُمْthe most ignoble of them inنَسَبًاlineageوَأَظْهَرُهُمْand the most apparent of them inلَعْنَةً،being cursed,
Men of Quraysh sought judgment regarding you, and the most ignoble of them in lineage and the most apparent of them in being cursed prevailed over you.
فَإِيَّاكَSo bewareعَنِّيof meفَإِنَّكَfor indeed you areرِجْسٌ،impure,وَإِنَّمَاand indeed we areنَحْنُwe areبَيْتُthe household ofالطَّهَارَةِ،purity,
So beware of me, for you are impure, and we are the household of purity.
أَذْهَبَRemovedاللَّهُAllahعَنَّاfrom usالرِّجْسَimpurityوَطَهَّرَنَاand purified usتَطْهِيرًا.a thorough purification.
Allah has removed from us impurity and purified us a thorough purification.
قِيلَ:It was said:وَاجْتَمَعَAnd gatheredالْحَسَنُAl-Hasanبْنُson ofعَلِيٍّAliوَعَمْرُوand Amrبْنُson ofالْعَاصِAl-Aasفَقَالَand saidالْحَسَنُ:Al-Hasan:
It was said: Al-Hasan ibn Ali and Amr ibn al-Aas gathered, and al-Hasan said:
قَدْIndeedعَلِمَتْhas knownقُرَيْشٌQurayshبِأَسْرِهَاin its entiretyأَنِّيthat Iمِنْهَاam from itفِيinعِزِّthe glory ofأُرُومَتِهَاits originلَمْnotأُطْبَعْwas I moldedعَلَىuponضَعْفٍweaknessوَلَمْnorأُعْكَسْwas I turnedعَلَىtoخَسْفٍ،humiliation,أُعْرَفُI am knownبِشَبَهِيby my likenessوَأُدَّعَىand I am claimedلِأَبِي.by my father.
Quraysh in its entirety has known that I am from the glory of its origin; I was not molded upon weakness nor turned to humiliation, and I am known by my likeness and claimed by my father.
فَقَالَThen saidعَمْرٌو:Amr:قَدْIndeedعَلِمَتْhas knownقُرَيْشٌQurayshأَنَّكَthat youمِنْare amongأَقَلِّهَاthe least of them inعَقْلًاintellectوَأَكْثَرِهَاand the most of them inجَهْلًا،ignorance,
Amr said: Quraysh has known that you are among the least of them in intellect and the most of them in ignorance,
وَأَنَّand thatفِيكَin you areخِصَالًاtraitsلَوْifلَمْthere were notيَكُنْin youفِيكَexceptإِلَّاoneوَاحِدَةٌof themمِنْهُنَّits disgraceلَشَمِلَكَwould encompass youخِزْيُهَاjust asكَمَاencompassesاشْتَمَلَthe jet-blackالْبَيَاضُwhiteness.الْحَالِكُ،jet-black.
and that in you are traits, if there were not in you except one of them, its disgrace would encompass you just as the jet-black encompasses whiteness.
لَعَمْرُBy the life ofاللَّهِAllahلَتَنْتَهِيَنَّyou will surely desistعَمَّاfrom whatأَرَاكَI see youتَصْنَعُmakingأَوْorلَأُكْبِسَنَّI will thrust upon youلَكَfor youحَافَّةًa sideكَجِلْدِlike the hide ofالْعَائِطِa barren camel
By the life of Allah, you will surely desist from what I see you doing, or I will thrust upon you a side like the hide of a barren camel,
أَرْمِيكَshooting at youمِنْfromخِلَالِهَاits gapsبِأَحَرَّwith what is hotter thanمِنْthanوَقْعِthe striking ofالْأَثافِيِّthe cooking tripodsأَعْرُكُand I will rubمِنْهَاfrom itأَدِيمَكَyour skinعَرْكَlike the rubbing ofالسَّلْعَةِ،a skin sore,
shooting at you from its gaps with things hotter than the striking of cooking tripods, and I will rub your skin from it like the rubbing of a skin sore.
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed youطَالَمَاhave longرَكِبْتَriddenصَعْبَthe difficultالْمُنْحَدَرِslopeوَنَزَلْتَand descendedفِيintoعِرَاضِthe expanses ofالْوَعْرِrough land
For indeed you have long ridden the difficult slope and descended into the expanses of rough land,
التِمَاسًاseekingلِلْفُرْقَةِdivisionوَإِرْصَادًاand watching forلِلْفِتْنَةِseditionوَلَنْand will notيَزِيدَكَincrease youاللَّهُAllahفِيهَاthereinإِلَّاexceptفَظَاعَةً.abomination.
seeking division and watching for sedition, and Allah will not increase you therein except in abomination.
فَقَالَThen saidالْحَسَنُ،Al-Hasan,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ:be peace:أَمَاAs forوَاللَّهِAllahلَوْifكُنْتَyou wereتَسْمُوto aspireبِحَسَبِكَby your lineageوَتَعْمَلُand actبِرَأْيِكَby your opinionمَاyou would notسَلَكْتَhave walkedفَجَّthe path ofقَصْدٍintentوَلَاnorحَلَلْتَsettledرَابِيَةَthe hill ofمَجْدٍ.glory.
Then al-Hasan, peace be upon him, said: As for Allah, if you were to aspire by your lineage and act by your opinion, you would not have walked the path of intent nor settled the hill of glory.
وَايْمُAnd by the oath ofاللَّهِAllahلَوْifأَطَاعَنِيhad obeyed meمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahلَجَعَلَكَhe would have made youبِمَنْزِلَةِin the position ofالْعَدُوِّthe enemyالْكَاشِحِ،harboring deep enmity,
And by Allah, if Muawiyah had obeyed me, he would have made you in the position of the enemy harboring deep enmity,
فَإِنَّهُfor indeedطَالَمَاlong haveطَوَيْتَyou harboredعَلَىuponهَذَاthisكَشْحَكَyour flankوَأَخْفَيْتَهُand concealed itفِيinصَدْرِكَyour chestوَطَمَحَand soaredبِكَwith youالرَّجَاءُhopeإِلَىtoالْغَايَةِthe utmostالْقُصْوَىlimit
for long have you harbored this enmity in your flank and concealed it in your chest, and hope has soared with you to the utmost limit
الَّتِيwhichلَاdoes notيُورِقُproduce leaves forبِهَاtherebyغُصْنُكَyour branchوَلَاnorيَخْضَرُّbecome greenلَهَاfor itمَرْعَاكَ.your pasture.
which your branch does not put forth leaves for, nor your pasture become green for.
أَمَاAs forوَاللَّهِAllahلَيُوشِكَنَّit will soon beيَاOابْنَson ofالْعَاصِAl-Aasأَنْthatتَقَعَyou fallبَيْنَbetweenلَحْيَيْthe two jaws ofضِرْغَامٍa lionمِنْfromقُرَيْشٍQuraysh
As for Allah, O son of al-Aas, you will soon fall between the two jaws of a lion from Quraysh,
قَوِيٍّpowerfulمُتَمَنِّعٍdefendedفَرُوسٍpredatoryذِيpossessingلُبَدٍa maneيَضْغَطُكَwho will crush youضَغْطَlike the crushing ofالرَّحَىthe millstoneلِلْحَبِّfor grain
powerful, defended, predatory, possessing a mane, who will crush you like the crushing of the millstone for grain,
لَاdoes notيُنْجِيكَsave youمِنْهُfrom himالرَّوَغَانُevasionإِذَاwhenالْتَقَتْmeetحَلْقَتَاthe two rings ofالْبِطَانِ.the girth.
evasion will not save you from him when the two rings of the girth meet.
[مَحَاسِنُ[The fineكَلَامِwords ofعَبْدِAbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنِAbbasالْعَبَّاسِ]]
[The fine words of Abdullah bin Abbas]
[رَضِيَ[May Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُ]with him]
[May Allah be pleased with him]
أَبُوAbuالْمُنْذِرِAl-Mundhirعَنْfromأَبِيهِhis fatherعَنْfromالشَّعْبِيِّAl-ShaabiعَنْfromابْنِIbnعَبَّاسٍAbbasأَنَّهُthat heدَخَلَenteredالْمَسْجِدَthe mosque
Abu al-Mundhir from his father from al-Shaabi from Ibn Abbas that he entered the mosque
وَقَدْwhileسَارَhad set outالْحُسَيْنُAl-Husseinبْنُson ofعَلِيٍّ،Ali,رَضِيَmay Allah be pleased withاللَّهُhimعَنْهُ،him,إِلَىtoالْعِرَاقِIraq
while al-Hussein ibn Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, had set out to Iraq,
فَإِذَاand beholdهُوَhe wasبِابْنِwith the son ofالزُّبَيْرِAl-Zubayrفِيinجَمَاعَةٍa groupمِنْofقُرَيْشٍQurayshقَدْwho hadاسْتَعْلَاهُمْovercome themبِالْكَلَامِ،in speech,
and behold, he found Ibn al-Zubayr in a group of Quraysh, having overcome them in speech.
فَجَاءَSo cameابْنُIbnعَبَّاسٍAbbasحَتَّىuntilضَرَبَhe struckبِيَدِهِwith his handبَيْنَbetweenعُضُدَيْthe two upper arms ofابْنِIbnالزُّبَيْرِAl-Zubayr
Ibn Abbas came until he struck with his hand between the two upper arms of Ibn al-Zubayr
وَقَالَ:and said:أَصْبَحْتَYou have becomeوَاللَّهِby Allahكَمَاjust asقَالَsaidالْأَوَّلُ:the first one:
and said: You have become, by Allah, just as the first one said:
يَاOلَكَto youمِنْfromحُمَّرَةٍa red birdبِمَعْمَرٍin Maamar......خَلَاclearedلَكَfor youالْجَوُّthe atmosphereفَبِيضِيso lay eggsوَاصْفَرِّand flap
O what a red bird in Maamar... the atmosphere has cleared for you, so lay eggs and flap
وَنَقِّرِيAnd peckمَاwhatشِئْتِyou wishأَنْtoتُنَقِّرِيpeck......قَدْhas beenرُفِعَliftedالْفَخُّthe trapفَمَاذَاso whatتَحْذَرِيdo you fear
And peck what you wish to peck... the trap has been lifted, so what do you fear?
خَلَتِHas emptiedالْحِجَازُthe HijazمِنْofالْحُسَيْنِAl-Husseinبْنِson ofعَلِيٍّAliوَأَقْبَلْتَand you have begunتَهْدِرُto rumbleفِيinجَوَانِبِهَا.its corners.
The Hijaz has emptied of al-Hussein ibn Ali, and you have begun to rumble in its corners.
فَغَضِبَThen became angryابْنُIbnالزُّبَيْرِAl-Zubayrوَقَالَ:and said:وَاللَّهِBy Allahإِنَّكَverily youلَتَرَىthinkأَنَّكَthat youأَحَقُّare more deservingبِهَذَاof thisالْأَمْرِmatterمِنْthanغَيْرِكَ.someone else.
Ibn al-Zubayr became angry and said: By Allah, you think that you are more deserving of this matter than someone else.
فَقَالَThen saidابْنُIbnعَبَّاسٍ:Abbas:إِنَّمَاOnlyيَرَىthinksمَنْhe whoكَانَwasفِيinحَالِa state ofشَكٍّdoubtوَأَنَاwhile Iمِنْinذَاكَthat regardعَلَىam uponيَقِينٍ.certainty.
Ibn Abbas said: Only he who is in a state of doubt thinks so, while I am upon certainty in that regard.
فَقَالَ:He said:وَبِأَيِّAnd by whatشَيْءٍthingتُحَقِّقُdo you verifyعِنْدَكَwith yourselfأَنَّكَthat youأَحَقُّare more deservingبِهَذَاof thisالْأَمْرِmatterمَنِّي؟than me?
He said: And by what do you verify with yourself that you are more deserving of this matter than me?
قَالَSaidابْنُIbnعَبَّاسٍ:Abbas:لِأَنَّاBecause weأَحَقُّare more deservingمِمَّنْthan one whoيَدُلُّarguesبِحَقِّهِ،by our right,وَبِأَيِّand by whatشَيْءٍthingتُحَقِّقُdo you verifyعِنْدَكَwith yourselfأَنَّكَthat youأَحَقُّare more deservingبِهَاof itمِنْthanسَائِرِthe rest ofالْعَرَبِthe Arabsإِلَّاexceptبِنَا؟through us?
Ibn Abbas said: Because we are more deserving than one who argues by our right, and by what do you verify with yourself that you are more deserving of it than the rest of the Arabs except through us?
فَقَالَThen saidابْنُIbnالزُّبَيْرِ:Al-Zubayr:تَحَقَّقَVerifiedعِنْدِيwith meأَنِّيis that Iأَحَقُّam more deservingبِهَاof itمِنْكُمْthan youلِشَرَفِيdue to my nobilityعَلَيْكُمْover youقَدِيمًاformerlyوَحَدِيثًا.and recently.
Ibn al-Zubayr said: It is verified with me that I am more deserving of it than you due to my nobility over you formerly and recently.
فَقَالَ:He said:أَنْتَAre youأَشْرَفُmore nobleأَمْorمَنْheقَدْby whomشَرُفْتَyou were made nobleبِهِ؟?
He said: Are you more noble, or he by whom you were made noble?
فَقَالَ:He said:إِنَّIndeedمَنْhe whoشَرُفْتُmade me nobleبِهِby himزَادَنِيincreased me inشَرَفًاnobilityإِلَىtoشَرَفٍnobilityقَدْthatكَانَwasلِيfor meقَدِيمًاformerlyوَحَدِيثًا.and recently.
He said: Indeed, he who made me noble by him increased me in nobility to nobility that was for me formerly and recently.
قَالَ:He said:أَفَمِنِّيIs the increase from meالزِّيَادَةُincreaseأَمْorمِنْكَ؟from you?
He said: Is the increase from me or from you?
قَالَ:He said:بَلْRatherمِنْكَ.from you.
He said: Rather from you.
فَتَبَسَّمَThen smiledابْنُIbnعَبَّاسٍ،Abbas,فَقَالَ:and said:
Then Ibn Abbas smiled and said:
يَاOابْنَson ofعَبَّاسٍAbbasدَعْنِيleave meمِنْfromلِسَانِكَyour tongueهَذَاthisالَّذِيwhichتُقَلِّبُهُyou turnكَيْفَhoweverشِئْتَ،you wish,
O son of Abbas, leave me from this tongue of yours which you turn however you wish,
وَاللَّهِand by Allahلَاyou do notتُحِبُّونَنَاlove usيَاOبَنِيsons ofهَاشِمٍHashimأَبَدًا.ever.
and by Allah, you do not love us, O sons of Hashim, ever.
قَالَSaidابْنُIbnعَبَّاسٍ:Abbas:صَدَقْتَ،You have spoken the truth,نَحْنُwe areأَهْلُthe people ofبَيْتٍa householdمَعَwithاللَّهِAllahعَزَّAlmightyوَجَلَّand Majesticلَاwe do notنُحِبُّloveمَنْwhomأَبْغَضَهُhas angeredاللَّهُAllahتَعَالَى.Most High.
Ibn Abbas said: You have spoken the truth, we are a household with Allah, Mighty and Majestic, who do not love whom Allah, the Most High, has angered.
فَقَالَ:He said:يَاOابْنَson ofعَبَّاسٍAbbasمَاdoes notيَنْبَغِيbefitلَكَyouأَنْtoتَصْفَحَturn awayعَنْfromكَلِمَةٍa wordوَاحِدَةٍ؟single?
He said: O son of Abbas, does it not befit you to turn away from a single word?
قَالَ:He said:إِنَّمَاOnlyأَصْفَحُdo I turn awayعَمَّنْfrom one whoأَقَرَّconfessedوَأَمَّاand as forعَمَّنْone whoهَرَّbarksفَلَا،then no,وَالْفَضْلُand virtueلِأَهْلِbelongs to the people ofالْفَضْلِ.virtue.
He said: I only turn away from one who confesses, and as for one who barks, then no; and virtue belongs to the people of virtue.
قَالَSaidابْنُIbnالزُّبَيْرِ:Al-Zubayr:فَأَيْنَSo where isالْفَضْلُ؟virtue?
Ibn al-Zubayr said: So where is virtue?
قَالَ:He said:عِنْدَنَاWith usأَهْلَO people ofالْبَيْتِthe householdلَاdo notتَصْرِفْهُdivert itعَنْfromأَهْلِهِits peopleفَتَظْلِمَlest you oppressوَلَاand do notتَضَعْهُplace itفِيinغَيْرِother thanأَهْلِهِits peopleفَتَنْدَمَ.lest you regret.
He said: With us, the people of the household; do not divert it from its people lest you oppress, and do not place it in other than its people lest you regret.
قَالَSaidابْنُIbnالزُّبَيْرِ:Al-Zubayr:أَفَلَسْتَAre you notمِنْofأَهْلِهِ؟its people?
Ibn al-Zubayr said: Are you not of its people?
قَالَ:He said:بَلَىYesإِنْifنَبَذْتَyou cast awayالْحَسَدَenvyوَلَزِمْتَand adhere toالْجَدَدَ.the right path.
He said: Yes, if you cast away envy and adhere to the right path.
وَانْقَضَىAnd endedحَدِيثُهُمَا،their conversation,وَقَامَand stoodالْقَوْمُthe peopleفَتَفَرَّقُوا.and dispersed.
Their conversation ended, and the people stood and dispersed.
