and Al-Mansur extended his hand to me,

فَانْكَبَبْتُso I leaned overعَلَيْهَاupon itفَقَبَّلْتُهَا،and kissed it.

so I leaned over it and kissed it.

so I knew that he did not do that except for something in his hand.

فَوَضَعَSo he placedفِيinيَدِيmy handكِتَاباًa letterصَغِيراًsmallتَسْتُرُهُhidden byالْكَفُّ،the palm.

فَرَجَعْتُSo I returnedفَاسْتَأْذَنْتُand asked permission

So I returned and asked permission,

فَقُلْتُ:and I said:يَاOأَمِيرَPrince ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Believers,

فَخَرَجْتُSo I came outثُمَّthenعُدْتُreturnedإِلَيْهِto himالْيَوْمَthe dayالثَّانِيsecondفَكَلَّمْتُهُ،and spoke to him,

So I came out, then returned to him on the second day and spoke to him,

فَرَدَّand he repliedعَلَيَّto meمِثْلَlikeالْجَوَابِthe answerالْأَوَّلِ،first,

and he replied to me like the first answer,

فَقُلْتُ:so I said:يَاOأَمِيرَPrince ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Believers,

so I said: "O Commander of the Faithful,

I only wanted their betterment so that I may gain strength by them for your service."

فَقَالَ:He said:إِذَاIfشِئْتَ،you wish,

He said: "If you wish."

فَقُلْتُ:So I said:يَاOأَمِيرَPrince ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Believers,فَلِيthen I haveحَاجَةٌa needأَذْكُرُهَا.I mention it.

So I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, I have a need to mention it."

قَالَ:He said:قُلْتُ:I said:أَحْتَاجُI needإِلَىtoخَلْوَةٍ،privacy,

He said: I said: "I need privacy."

فَنَهَضَSo stood upالْقَوْمُthe peopleوَبَقِيَand remainedالرَّبِيعُ،Al-Rabi',

So the people stood up and Al-Rabi' remained,

فَقُلْتُso I saidأَحِلْنِي،Clear the way for me,

so I said: "Clear the way for me."

قَالَ:He said:وَمِنَAnd fromالرَّبِيعِ؟Al-Rabi'?

He said: "Even from Al-Rabi'?"

فَتَنَحَّىSo stepped asideالرَّبِيعُAl-Rabi'

So Al-Rabi' stepped aside

فَقَالَ:and he said:إِنْIfجُدْتَyou bestowلِيto meبِدَمِكَwith your bloodوَمَالِكَ،and your wealth,

and he said: "If you bestow upon me your blood and your wealth?"

فَقُلْتُ:So I said:يَاOأَمِيرَPrince ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Believers,

So I said: "O Commander of the Faithful,

وَهَلْand areأَنَاIوَمَالِيand my wealthإِلَّاexceptمِنْfromنِعْمَتِكَ؟your bounty?

and are not I and my wealth except from your bounty?

You spared my blood, returned my wealth to me, and favored me with your company."

فَقَالَ:He said:إِنَّهُIndeed itيَهْجِسُoccursفِيinنَفْسِيmy soulأَنَّthatالْمَرَّارَAl-MarrarبْنَbinجَهْوَرٍJahwarعَلَىis uponخَلْعِيmy deposition

He said: "It occurs in my soul that Al-Marrar bin Jahwar is bent on deposing me,

قَالَ:He said:فَمَضَيْتُSo I departedحَتَّىuntilأَتَيْتُI came toالرَّيَّRayy

He said: So I departed until I came to Rayy

فَدَخَلْتُand I enteredعَلَىuponمُرَّارٍMarrarفَقَالَ:and he said:أَفَلْتَ؟"Did you escape?"

and I entered upon Marrar, and he said: "Did you escape?"

قُلْتُ:I said:نَعَمْ"Yesوَالْحَمْدُand praise beلِلَّهِ،to Allah,"

I said: "Yes, and praise be to Allah,"

ثُمَّthenأَقْبَلْتُI beganأُؤْنِسُهُto comfort himبِالْوَقِيعَةِby criticizingفِيinالْمَنْصُورِAl-Mansurحَتَّىuntilأَظْهَرَhe revealedمَاwhatكَانَwasالْمَنْصُورُAl-Mansurظَنَّsuspicion ofبِهِ،regarding him.

then I began to comfort him by criticizing Al-Mansur until he revealed what Al-Mansur had suspected of him.

فَكَتَبْتُSo I wroteإِلَيْهِto himبِذَلِكَ،about that.

So I wrote to him about that.

فَلَمَّاWhenوَصَلَتْreachedمِنْهُfrom himإِلَىtoمَاwhatأَرَدْتُI wantedأَتَيْتُI came toضِيَاعِيmy estatesثُمَّthenرَجَعْتُI returnedإِلَيْهِto himبَعْدَafterأَيَّامٍ،days,

فَقَالَ:and he said:نَجَّاكَ"Did save youاللَّهُAllahمِنَfromالْفَاجِرِ؟the wicked one?"

and he said: "Did Allah save you from the wicked one?"

قُلْتُ:I said:نَعَمْ،"Yes,وَأَرْجُوand I hopeأَنْthatتَقَعَmay fallعَيْنُهُhis eyeعَلَيَّupon meأَبَداً،never again,"

I said: "Yes, and I hope his eye never falls upon me again,"

فَكُنْتُso I used toأُعَرِّضُinsinuateبِهِagainst himفَيَزِيدُنِيand he would increase meمِمَّاin whatعِنْدَهُ،he had.

so I used to insinuate against him and he would increase me in what he had (of trust/secrets).

ثُمَّThenقَالَhe saidلِي:to me:هَلْ"Doلَكَyou haveأَنْthatتَخْرُجَyou go outإِلَىtoمُتَنَزَّهٍa pleasantطَيِّبٍ؟promenade?"

Then he said to me: "Would you like to go out to a pleasant promenade?"

so I went out and he, riding side by side, until we came to an elevated place upon which a dome had been built for him.

فَأَحَدَّSo he fixedالنَّظَرَhis gazeإِلَىatمَاwhatهُنَاكَwas thereثُمَّthenقَالَ:he said:

and I conspired with them that we would pounce upon him,

وَكَتَبْتُand I wroteإِلَىtoالْمُصَمَّغَانِAl-Musamaghanأَنْthatيَأْتِيَهُhe should come to himفِيwithجُنْدِهِhis troopsإِلَىtoالْمَوْضِعِthe placeالَّذِيwhichاتَّفَقْنَاwe agreedعَلَيْهِ،upon.

and I wrote to Al-Musamaghan that he should come with his troops to the place which we had agreed upon.

قَالَ:He said:وَأَخَذَAnd tookالْمَرَّارُAl-Marrarالدَّوَاءَmedicineفِيinذَلِكَthatالْيَوْمِ،day,

The chamberlain said: "You hurried."

قُلْتُ:I said:نَعَمْ"Yes,فِيonحَاجَةٍan errandلِلْأَمِيرِ،for the Emir,"
