We said: "The vizier will tell us." He said: "Bahram Gur had a son whom he had groomed for the kingdom after him and relied upon in his life. And he was of low chivalry, fallen ambition, so he assigned to him several tutors, sages, scholars, and those who teach horsemanship. So while Bahram was in his assembly, one of those tutors assigned to his son entered upon him. He asked him about his son's news and where he had reached in wisdom and literature. He said: "O King, I had hoped that he would turn to or comprehend some of what I composed and presented to him, until something happened in his affair that made me despair of him." He said: "And what is that?" He said: "He gazed at the daughter of so-and-so the marzban and fell in love with her, so now he is raving about her night and day." He said: "Now I have hoped for his success. Go and encourage him by having him write to the woman and frighten him with me." So the tutor went and accomplished what he was ordered to do. And Bahram sent to the girl's father and summoned him, and said to him: "I am marrying my son to your daughter, so go to her and command her to write to my son and make him greedy for herself. When his greed for her is confirmed and he hopes to meet her, she should play hard to get and say: 'I am not fit except for a king of great status, distant ambition, good affection, cultured soul, and brave prowess, and you are not that, nor is it there.' Then let me know what takes place between you in that regard." So the marzban went to his daughter and informed her of that and what the king had said to him. So she wrote to the young man and made him greedy, then told him what her father had commanded her.

When the young man heard that, he was deeply disdaining and felt small, so he applied himself to learning literature, wisdom, and horsemanship until he became a leader in that. When he reached the ultimate limit beyond which there was none, he submitted his petition to his father, complaining of the lag of his condition and the shortness of his hand from what he desired. So his father signed for the removal of his ailment and widening things for him. Then he sent to the tutor and summoned him, saying: "Tell my son to raise up to me a petition asking me to marry him to the daughter of the marzban." So the tutor told him that, and he wrote a petition which he raised to the king, asking him to marry her to him, to join his wing with that, and that she was among those fit for the likes of him. So the king ordered the marzban to be brought and asked him to marry his daughter to his son, and he did. And the king equipped her with the most magnificent dowry and said to his son: "When you are alone with her, do not bring about anything until I come to you." When that time came, the king entered upon his son and said: "O my son, beware of belittling the status of this woman with you, for she is one of the greatest people in favor upon you. Indeed, what happened of her writing to you was only by my command, with my permission, and by my planning. So recognize her right and the right of her father, and treat her well, consort with her kindly, and be dutiful to her." Then the king left and the young man was alone with his wife. Then Dhu Al-Ri'asatayn said: "Ask now the elder about the reason that prompted him to what he commanded you to do." He said: So we asked him and he narrated to us the story of Dhu Al-Ri'asatayn.
