وَأَمَّاAnd as forمَاwhatأَرَاهُHe showed himاللَّهُAllahأَعْدَاءَهُof His enemiesمِنَofالآيَاتِthe signsفَأَكْثَرُthen it is moreمَنْthanأَنْtoيُحْصَىbe counted
And as for what Allah showed His enemies of the signs, it is more than can be counted,
مِنْهَاamong themمَاwhatرَوَاهُwas narrated byوَهْبُWahbبْنُson ofمُنَبِّهٍMunabbihعَنِfromاللَّيْثِAl-Laithبْنِson ofسَعْدٍSa'dقَالَwho said
among them is what Wahb ibn Munabbih narrated from Al-Laith ibn Sa'd, who said:
أَتَىCameأَرْبَدُArbadبْنُson ofرَبِيعَةَRabi'ahوَعَامِرُand Amirبْنُson ofالطَّفَيْلِAt-Tufailإِلَىtoرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِAllah
Arbad ibn Rabi'ah and Amir ibn At-Tufail came to the Messenger of Allah,
صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe uponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand blessings
may peace and blessings be upon him,
فَقَالَand saidأَحَدُهُمَاone of themلِلْآخَرِto the other
and one of them said to the other:
أَنَاIأَشْغَلُهُwill distract himبِالْكَلَامِwith talkحَتَّىuntilتَقْتُلَهُyou kill him
"I will distract him with talk until you kill him."
فَوَقَفَSo stoodأَحَدُهُمَاone of themعَلَىnearالنَّبِيِّthe Prophet
So one of them stood near the Prophet,
صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe uponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand blessings
may peace and blessings be upon him,
فَلَمَّاand whenطَالَit grew longعَلَيْهِupon himانْصَرَفَhe left
and when it took too long for him, he left
فَقَالَand saidلِصَاحِبِهِto his companion
and said to his companion:
مَاWhatصَنَعْتَdid you doشَيْئاًanything?
"Did you accomplish anything?"
قَالَHe said
He said:
رَأَيْتُ"I sawعِنْدَهُby himشَيْئاًsomething
"I saw near him something
وَرِجْلُهُand his legفِيonالْأَرْضِthe earthوَرَأْسُهُand his headفِيinالسَّمَاءِthe sky
with his foot on the earth and his head in the sky;
لَوْifدَنَوْتُI had drawn nearمِنْهُto himأَهْلَكَنِيhe would have destroyed me.
if I had drawn near to him, he would have destroyed me.
وَأَمَّاAnd as forأَرْبَدُArbadفَأَصَابَتْهُso struck himصَاعِقَةٌa thunderbolt
And as for Arbad, a thunderbolt struck him,
وَأَنْزَلَand sent downاللَّهُAllahتَعَالَىMost High
and Allah the Most High sent down:
لَهُ"For himمُعَقِّبَاتٌare successive [angels]مِنْfromبَيْنِbeforeيَدَيْهِhimوَمِنْand fromخَلْفِهِbehind himيَحْفَظُونَهُwho protect himمِنْbyأَمْرِthe decree ofاللَّهِAllah.
"For him are successive [angels] before him and behind him who protect him by the decree of Allah."
وَأَمَّاAnd as forعَامِرٌAmirفَإِنَّهُheقَالَsaidلِرَسُولِto the Messenger ofاللَّهِAllah
And as for Amir, he said to the Messenger of Allah,
صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe uponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand blessings
may peace and blessings be upon him:
لَنَا"To usأَهْلُbelong the people ofالْوَبَرِtent-hairوَلَكُمْand to youأَهْلُbelong the people ofالْمَدَرِclay-houses
"To us belong the people of the tents, and to you belong the people of the towns,"
فَقَالَso he said
so he said,
صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe uponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand blessings
may peace and blessings be upon him:
لَكُمُ"To youالْأَعِنَّةُbelong the reins.
"To you belong the reins."
فَقَالَHe said
He said:
لَأَمْلَأَنَّهَا"I will surely fill itخَيْلاًwith horsesعَلَيْكُمْagainst youوَرِجْلاًand foot soldiers."
"I will surely fill it against you with horses and foot soldiers."
فَلَمَّاThen whenوَلَّىhe turned awayرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِAllah
Then when the Messenger of Allah turned away,
صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe uponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand blessings
may peace and blessings be upon him,
قَالَhe said
he said:
اللَّهُمَّ"O Allahاكْفِنِيهِsuffice me against him."
"O Allah, suffice me against him."
فَأَخَذَتْهُSo seized himغُدَّةٌa glandular swellingفَقَتَلَتْهُand killed him.
So a glandular swelling seized him and killed him.
وَعَنْAnd fromمُحَمَّدِMuhammadبْنِson ofعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllahقَالَwho said
And from Muhammad ibn Abdullah, who said:
بَيْنَاWhileرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِAllah
While the Messenger of Allah
صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe uponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand blessings
may peace and blessings be upon him,
قَائِمٌwas standingيُصَلِّيprayingإِذْwhenرَآهُsaw himأَبُوAbuجَهْلٍJahl
was standing praying, Abu Jahl saw him
فَقَالَand saidلِنَفَرٍto a groupمِنْfromقُرَيْشٍQuraysh:
and said to a group from Quraysh:
لَأَذْهَبَنَّ"I will surely goفَأَقْتُلَنَّand I will surely killمُحَمَّداًMuhammad."
"I will surely go and kill Muhammad."
فَدَنَاSo he drew nearمِنْهُto himقَالَHe said
So he drew near to him. He said:
وَرَسُولُAnd the Messenger ofاللَّهِAllah
And the Messenger of Allah
صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe uponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand blessings
may peace and blessings be upon him,
قَائِمٌwas standingيُصَلِّيprayingوَيَقْرَأُand reciting:
was standing praying and reciting:
اقْرَأْ"Reciteبِاسْمِin the name ofرَبِّكَyour LordالَّذِيwhoخَلَقَcreatedخَلَقَCreatedالْإِنْسَانَmanمِنْfromعَلَقٍa clinging substance
"Recite in the name of your Lord who created, created man from a clinging substance,"
حَتَّىuntilبَلَغَhe reachedآخِرَهَاthe end of it.
until he reached the end of it.
فَانْصَرَفَThen turned awayأَبُوAbuجَهْلٍJahlوَهُوَwhile heيَقُولُwas saying:
Then Abu Jahl turned away while he was saying:
هَذَا"Thisوَأَبِيكُمْby your fatherوَعِيدٌis a severeشَدِيدٌwarning!"
"This, by your father, is a severe warning!"
فَلَقِيَSo he metأَصْحَابَهُhis companionsفَقَالُواand they saidلَهُto him:
So he met his companions and they said to him:
مَا"Whatبَالَكَis the matter with youلَمْthat you did notتَقْتُلْهُkill him?"
"What is the matter with you that you did not kill him?"
قَالَHe said
He said:
وَاللَّهِ"By Allahإِنَّindeedبَيْنِيbetween meوَبَيْنَهُand himرَجُلاًis a man
"By Allah, indeed between me and him
لَهُwho hasكَتِيتٌa snortكَكَتِيتِlike the snort ofالْفَحْلِa stallion camel
is a man who has a snort like the snort of a stallion camel,
يَعِدُنِيthreatening meيَقُولُand saying:
threatening me and saying:
ادْنُ"Draw nearادْنُdraw near."
"Draw near, draw near."
وَعَنْAnd fromعَبْدِAbdullahاللَّهِbin Mas'udأَنَّthatأَعْرَابِيّاًa Bedouinجَاءَcameبِعُكَّةِwith a skin bag ofسَمْنٍclarified butter
And from Abdullah that a Bedouin came with a skin bag of clarified butter,
فَاشْتَرَاهَاand bought itأَبُوAbuجَهْلٍJahl
and Abu Jahl bought it from him,
فَأَمْسَكَbut withheldالْعُكَّةَthe skin bagوَأَمْسَكَand withheldالثَّمَنَthe price.
but withheld the skin bag and withheld the price.
فَشَكَاهُSo complained of himالْأَعْرَابِيُّthe BedouinإِلَىtoقُرَيْشٍQuraysh
So the Bedouin complained of him to Quraysh,
فَكَلَّمُوهُand they spoke to himفَأَبَىbut he refusedعَلَيْهِمْthem.
and they spoke to him [on the Bedouin's behalf], but he refused them.
فَقَالَThen saidبَعْضُsomeالْمُسْتَهْزِئِينَof the mockers:
Then some of the mockers said:
يَا"OأَعْرَابِيُّBedouinأَتُحِبُّwould you likeأَنْtoتَأْخُذَtakeعُكَّتَكَyour skin bagوَثَمَنَهَاand its price?"
"O Bedouin, would you like to take your skin bag and its price?"
قَالَHe said
He said:
بَلَى"Yes."
"Yes."
قَالَThey said
They said:
أَتَرَى"Do you seeهَذَاthisالرَّجُلَmanالْمَارَّpassing by?
"Do you see this man passing by?
الْقَهُMeet himفَكَلِمْهُand speak to him
Go to him and speak to him,
يَعْنُونَmeaningالنَّبِيَّthe Prophet
meaning the Prophet,
صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe uponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand blessings
may peace and blessings be upon him,
فَأَتَاهُSo came to himالْأَعْرَابِيُّthe Bedouinوَشَكَاand complainedإِلَيْهِto himأَمْرَabout the matter ofالْعُكَّةِthe skin bag.
So the Bedouin came to him and complained about the matter of the skin bag.
فَخَرَجَSo went outعَلَيْهِwith him
So he went out with him,
صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe uponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand blessings
may peace and blessings be upon him,
حَتَّىuntilوَقَفَhe stoppedبِبَابِat the door ofأَبِيAbuجَهْلٍJahl
until he stopped at the door of Abu Jahl
فَنَادَاهُand called himبِاسْمِهِby his name.
and called him by his name.
فَخَرَجَSo came outإِلَيْهِto himتَرْعَدُtremblingفَرَائِصُهُhis flanks,
So he came out to him with his flanks trembling,
فَقَالَand he saidلَهُto him:
and he said to him:
أَدِّ"Giveهَذَاto this manعُكَّتَهُhis skin bagوَثَمَنَهَاand its price."
"Give this man his skin bag and its price."
فَدَخَلَSo enteredأَبُوAbuجَهْلٍJahlفَدَفَعَand handed overإِلَىtoالرَّجُلِthe manالْعُكَّةَthe skin bag.
So Abu Jahl went inside and handed the skin bag over to the man.
فَخَرَجَThen went outالْأَعْرَابِيُّthe BedouinإِلَىtoقُرَيْشٍQurayshوَأَخْبَرَهُمْand informed themبِذَلِكَof that.
Then the Bedouin went out to Quraysh and informed them of that.
ثُمَّThenخَرَجَcame outأَبُوAbuجَهْلٍJahl
Then Abu Jahl came out,
فَقَالَتْand saidلَهُto himقُرَيْشٌQuraysh:
and Quraysh said to him:
كَلَّمْنَاكَ"We spoke to youأَنْtoتُؤَدِّيَpayالْأَعْرَابِيَّthe Bedouinحَقَّهُhis rightفَأَبَيْتَbut you refused
"We spoke to you to pay the Bedouin his right, but you refused,
ثُمَّthenجَاءَكَcame to youابْنُthe son ofعَبْدِAbdالْمُطَّلِبِAl-Muttalibفَدَفَعْتَand you handed overإِلَيْهِto himذَلِكَthat?"
then the son of Abd Al-Muttalib came to you and you handed that over to him?"
فَقَالَHe said
He said:
إِنَّ"Indeedمَعَهُwith himلَجَمَلاًis surely a camelفَاتِحاًopeningفَاهُits mouth
"Indeed, with him is a camel opening its mouth,
يَنْظُرُwatchingمَاwhatأَقُولُI sayفَيَلْتَقِمَso that it would swallowرَأْسِيmy head.
watching what I say, so that it would swallow my head,
فَمَاSoوَجَدْتُI foundبُدّاًno alternativeمِنْtoإِعْطَائِهِgiving himحَقَّهُhis right.
so I found no alternative to giving him his right."
وَأَمَّاAnd as forأُنْسُthe intimacy ofالْوَحْشِwild animalsبِهِwith himفَمِمَّاthen it is from whatحَدَّثَنَاnarrated to usإِسْمَاعِيلُIsmailبْنُson ofيَحْيَىYahyaبْنِson ofمُحَمَّدٍMuhammadعَنْfromسَعِيدِSaeedبْنِson ofسَيْفِSaifبْنِson ofعُمَرَUmarعَنْfromأَبِيAbuعُمَيْرٍUmairعَنِfromالْأَسْوَدِAl-Aswadقَالَwho said
And as for the intimacy of wild animals with him, it is from what Ismail ibn Yahya ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Saeed ibn Saif ibn Umar, from Abu Umair, from Al-Aswad, who said:
سَأَلَAskedرَجُلٌa manهِنْدَHindبْنَson ofأَبِيAbuهَالَةَHala
A man asked Hind ibn Abu Hala...
فَقَالَand said
and said:
حَدِّثِينَا"Narrate to usبِأَعْجَبِof the most wondrousمَاwhatرَأَيْتِyou sawأَوْorبَلَغَكِreached youعَنْconcerningرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِAllah
"Narrate to us of the most wondrous thing you saw or that reached you concerning the Messenger of Allah,
صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe uponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand blessings
may peace and blessings be upon him,
فَقَالَتْso she said
so she said:
كُلُّ"Everyأَمْرِهِmatter of hisكَانَwasعَجَباًwondrous,
"Every matter of his was wondrous,
وَأَعْجَبُand the most wondrousمَاof whatرَأَيْتُI sawأَنَّهُwas thatكَانَthere wereلِيto meرَبَائِبُstepdaughtersوَحْشٍof wild animals
and the most wondrous of what I saw was that I had stepdaughters of wild animals
كُنْتُI used toآنَسُfind intimacyبِهِنَّwith themوَآلَفُهُنَّand be accustomed to them.
whom I used to find intimacy with and be accustomed to.
فَإِذَاThen whenكَانَit wasيَوْمُهُthe day of hisالَّذِيwhichيَكُونُhe would beفِيهِin itعِنْدِيwith me
Then when it was the day that he would be with me,
لَمْthey did notيَزَلْنَceaseقِيَاماًstandingصَوَافَّlined upيَنْظُرُونَlookingإِلَيْهِat him,
they would not cease standing, lined up, looking at him,
وَلَاand neitherيُلْهِيهِنَّdid distract themعَنِfromالنَّظَرِlookingإِلَيْهِat himشَيْءٌanythingوَلَاnorيَنْظُرْنَdid they lookإِلَىatغَيْرِهِanyone else.
and nothing would distract them from looking at him, nor would they look at anyone else.
فَإِذَاThen whenشَخَصَhe stoodقَائِماًuprightسَمَوْاthey turnedإِلَيْهِtoward himبِأَبْصَارِهِنَّwith their gazes,
Then when he stood up, they turned toward him with their gazes,
فَإِذَاand whenانْطَلَقَhe departedمُوَلِّياًturning awayلَاحَظْنَهُthey followed himالنَّظَرَwith their gaze,
and when he departed turning away, they followed him with their gaze,
فَإِذَاand whenغَابَdisappearedشَخْصُهُhis personعَنْهُنَّfrom themضَرَبْنَthey beatبِأَذْنَابِهِنَّwith their tailsوَآذَانِهِنَّand their ears,
and when his person disappeared from them, they beat with their tails and their ears,
وَكَانَand thatذَلِكَwasيُعْجِبُنِيamazing to me.
and that used to amaze me.
وَعَنْAnd fromعَبْدِAbdالْمَلِكِal-Malikبْنِson ofعُمَيْرٍUmairأَنَّthatالنَّبِيَّthe Prophet
And from Abd al-Malik ibn Umair that the Prophet
صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe uponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand blessings
may peace and blessings be upon him,
مَرَّpassed byبِظَبْيَةٍa doeعِنْدَwithقَانِصٍa hunter
passed by a doe with a hunter.
فَقَالَتْSo she said
So she said:
يَا"OرَسُولَMessenger ofاللَّهِAllahإِنَّindeedضَرْعِيmy udderقَدِhasامْتَلَأَbecome full
"O Messenger of Allah, indeed my udder has become full,
وَتَرَكْتُand I leftخِشْفَيْنِtwo fawnsجَائِعَيْنِhungry,
and I left two hungry fawns,
فَخَلِّنِيso release meحَتَّىuntilأَذْهَبَI goوَأُرْوِيَهُمَاand quench their thirstثُمَّthenأَعُودَI returnإِلَيْكَto youفَتَرْبُطَنِيand you tie me up."
so release me until I go and quench their thirst, then return to you so you can tie me up."
فَقَالَHe said
He said:
صَيْدُ"Game ofقَوْمٍa peopleوَرَبِيطَتُهُمْand their captive!"
"Game of a people and their captive!"
قَالَتْShe said
She said:
يَا"OرَسُولَMessenger ofاللَّهِAllahفَإِنِّيthen indeed Iأُعْطِيكَgive youعَهْدَthe covenant ofاللَّهِAllahلَأَرْجِعَنَّthat I will surely return.
"O Messenger of Allah, then indeed I give you the covenant of Allah that I will surely return."
فَأَخَذَSo tookعَلَيْهَاfrom herعَهْدَthe covenant ofاللَّهِAllahثُمَّthenأَطْلَقَهَاhe released herوَأَرْسَلَهَاand sent her off.
So he took the covenant of Allah from her, then released her and sent her off.
فَمَاAnd she tarriedلَبِثَتْnotإِلَّاexceptيَسِيراًa little whileحَتَّىuntilجَاءَتْshe cameوَقَدْwhile she hadفَرَّغَتْemptiedمَاwhatفِيwas inضَرْعِهَاher udder.
She tarried only a little while until she came, having emptied what was in her udder.
فَقَالَHe said
He said:
صَلَّىmay peaceاللَّهُbe uponعَلَيْهِhimوَسَلَّمَand blessings
may peace and blessings be upon him:
لِمَنْ"To whomهَذِهِdoes thisالظَّبْيَةُ؟doe belong?"
"To whom does this doe belong?"
قَالُواThey saidلِفُلَانٍ"To so-and-so."
They said, "To so-and-so."
فَاسْتَوْهَبَهَاSo he asked him to gift herمِنْهُto himثُمَّthenخَلَّىhe clearedسَبِيلَهَاher path
So he asked him to gift her to him, then he cleared her path [released her]
وَقَالَand said
and said:
لَوْ"Ifأَنَّthatالْبَهَائِمَthe beastsتَعْلَمُknewمَاwhatتَعْلَمُونَyou knowمِنَofالْمَوْتِdeathمَاneverأَكْلْتُمْwould you have eatenسَمْناًclarified butter."
"If the beasts knew what you know of death, you would never have eaten clarified butter."
وَأَمَّاAnd as forمَحَاسِنُthe fine testimoniesشَهَادَاتِof the testimonies ofالسِّبَاعِpredatory animalsلَهُto himبِالنُّبُوَّةِwith prophethood
And as for the fine testimonies of predatory animals to his prophethood,
فَمِنْthen fromذَلِكَthatمَاis whatرُوِيَwas narratedأَنَّthatأَبَاAbuسُفْيَانَSufyanبْنَson ofحَرْبٍHarbوَصَفْوَانَand Safwanبْنَson ofأُمَيَّةَUmayyahخَرَجَاwent outمِنْfromمَكَّةَMakkah
then from that is what was narrated, that Abu Sufyan ibn Harb and Safwan ibn Umayyah went out from Makkah,
فَإِذَاand beholdهُمَاthey twoبِذِئْبٍsaw a wolfيَكُدُّdrivingظَبْيَةًa doe
and behold, they saw a wolf driving a doe,
حَتَّىuntilإِنَّindeedنَفَسَهُits breathكَادَalmostأَنْtoيَبْلُغَreachظَهْرَthe back ofالظَّبْيَةِthe doeأَوْorشَبِيهاًsomething similarبِذَلِكَto that,
until its breath almost reached the back of the doe or something similar to that,
إِذْwhenدَخَلَenteredالظَّبْيُthe gazelleالْحَرَمَthe Sanctuaryفَرَجَعَand turned backالذِّئْبُthe wolf.
when the gazelle entered the Sanctuary and the wolf turned back.
فَقَالَSo saidأَبُوAbuسُفْيَانَSufyan:
So Abu Sufyan said:
مَا"Whatأَرْضٌlandسَكَنَهَاdwells in itقَوْمٌa peopleأَفْضَلُmore excellentمِنْthanأَرْضٍa landأَسْكَنَهَاhas made dwell in itاللَّهُAllahإِيَّانَاus.
"What land is inhabited by a people more excellent than a land Allah has made us inhabit!
أَمَاHave you notرَأَيْتَseenمَاwhatصَنَعَdidالذِّئْبُthe wolfأَعْجَبُhow wondrousمِنْهُit wasحِينَwhenرَجَعَ!he turned back?"
Have you not seen what the wolf did? How wondrous it was when he turned back!"
فَقَالَSo saidالذِّئْبُthe wolf:
So the wolf said:
أَعْجَبُ"More wondrousمِنْthanذَلِكَthatمُحَمَّدُis Muhammadبْنُson ofعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllahبْنِson ofعَبْدِAbdالْمُطَّلِبِAl-Muttalib
"More wondrous than that is Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abd Al-Muttalib
بِالْمَدِينَةِin Al-Madinahيَدْعُوكُمْcalling youإِلَىtoالْجَنَّةِParadiseوَتَدْعُونَهُwhile you call himإِلَىtoالنَّارِthe Fire."
in Al-Madinah, calling you to Paradise while you call him to the Fire."
فَقَالَSo saidأَبُوAbuسُفْيَانَSufyan:
So Abu Sufyan said:
وَاللَّاتِ"By Al-Latوَالْعُزَّىand Al-Uzzaلَئِنْifذَكَرْتَyou mentionذَلِكَthatبِمَكَّةَin Makkahلَنَتْرُكَنَّهَاwe will surely leave itخُلُوّاًdeserted."
"By Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, if you mention that in Makkah, we will surely leave it deserted."
