وَحَدَّثَAndصَالِحُSalihبْنُson ofسُلَيْمَانَSulaimanقَالَ:said:

And Salih bin Sulaiman narrated, saying:

وَذُكِرَAnd it was mentionedلِيَحْيَىto Yahyaوَهُوَwhile heمُجَاوِرٌwas residingبِمَكَّةَin Makkah

And it was mentioned to Yahya, while he was residing in Makkah,

أَنَّthatبِجِدَّةَin Jeddahقَوْماًa peopleيَصِيدُونَcatchالسَّمَكَfish

that in Jeddah there are people who catch fish,

وَيَبِيعُونَهُand sell itوَيَشْتَرُونَand buyطَعَامَهُمْtheir foodبِهِwith it

and sell it, and buy their food with it.

فَإِنْSo ifلَمْthey do notيَجِدُواfindصَيْداًgame

So if they do not find any catch,

مَكَثُواthey remainأَيَّاماًdaysلَاnotيَأْكُلُونَeating

they remain days without eating.

يَشُدُّTightensالرَّجُلُthe manعَلَىagainstبَطْنِهِhis bellyحَجَراًa stone

A man tightens a stone against his belly,

وَلَاand they do notيَسْأَلُونَaskالنَّاسَthe peopleشَيْئاًanything

and they do not ask the people for anything,

وَرُبَّمَاand perhapsمَاتَdiesأَحَدُهُمْone of themجُوعاً،of hunger.

and perhaps one of them dies of hunger.

فَقَالَ:He said:هَؤُلَاءِTheseأَعْجَبُare the most wondrousقَوْمٍpeopleسَمِعْتُI have heardبِهِمْ،of.

He said: These are the most wondrous people I have heard of,

يَنْبَغِيit is fittingأَنْthatنَلْتَمِسَwe seekالثَّوَابَthe rewardفِيهِمْ،in them.

it is fitting that we seek the reward through them.

فَبَعَثَSo he sentفَحُمِلَand was broughtإِلَيْهِto himبَعْضُهُمْsome of them

So he sent, and some of them were brought to him,

فَسَأَلَهُand he asked himعَنْaboutحَالِهِمْtheir condition

and he asked him about their condition,

فَأَخْبَرَهُso he informed him.

and he informed him.

فَقَالَ:He said:وَكَمْAnd how manyأَنْتُمْ؟are you?

He said: And how many are you?

فَذَكَرَSo he mentionedعِدَّةً،a number.

So he mentioned a number.

فَقَالَ:He said:وَكُلُّكُمْAnd are all of youعَلَىuponهَذِهِthisالطَّرِيقَةِ؟way?

He said: And are all of you upon this way?

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ،Yes.

He said: Yes.

قَالَ:He said:فَمَاThen whatيُغْنِيكُمْ؟suffices you?

He said: Then what would suffice you?

قَالَ:He said:تَحْفُرُYou digلَنَاfor usبِرْكَةًa pond

He said: You dig for us a pond

يَجْتَمِعُgathersفِيهِin itمَاءُthe waterالسَّمَاءِof the sky

in which the water of the sky gathers,

فَإِنَّforالْمَاءَwaterيَعِزُّis scarceبِالْبِلَادِin the land

for water is scarce in the land

إِلَّاexceptعَلَىforمَنْwhoكَانَتْwasلَهُfor himمِصْنَعَةٌa reservoir,

except for whoever has a reservoir,

فَيَشْرَبُso he drinksمِنْهَاfrom itوَيَبِيعُand sellsفَضْلَهَاits surplus

so he drinks from it, and sells its surplus,

وَيَنْتَفِعُand benefitsبِثَمَنِهِ،from its price.

and benefits from its price.

قَالَ:He said:فَبِكَمْThen with how muchيَكْتَفِيis satisfiedأَحَدُكُمْone of youفِيinالشَّهْرِ؟the month?

He said: Then how much does one of you suffice in the month?

قَالَ:He said:بِأَرْبَعَةِWith fourدَرَاهِمَdirhamsلِكُلِّfor everyرَجُلٍman

He said: With four dirhams for every man,

وَلِلْمَرْأَةِand for the womanسِتَّةُsixدَرَاهِمَ،dirhams.

and for the woman, six dirhams.

قَالَ:He said:فَإِنِّيThen indeed Iقَدْhaveأَجْرَيْتُallocatedلِكُلِّfor everyرَجُلٍmanعَشَرَةَtenدَرَاهِمَdirhams

He said: Then I have allocated for every man ten dirhams,

وَلِكُلِّand for everyامْرَأَةٍwomanثَمَانِيَةَeighteenعَشَرَtenدِرْهَماً،dirhams.

and for every woman eighteen dirhams.

فَهَلْSo doتَتَزَوَّجُونَ؟you marry?

So do you marry?

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ،Yes.

He said: Yes.

قَالَ:He said:فَكَمْThen how muchمُهُورُare the dowriesنِسَائِكُمْ؟of your women?

He said: Then how much are the dowries of your women?

قَالَ:He said:أَرْبَعُFourمِائَةِhundredدِرْهَمٍ،dirhams.

He said: Four hundred dirhams.

قَالَ:He said:فَإِنِّيThen indeed Iآمُرُorderبِإِعْطَائِكُمْthe giving to you ofمَاwhatأَجْرَيْتُI allocatedعَلَيْكُمْupon youلِسَبْعِfor sevenسِنِينَyears

He said: Then I order the giving to you of what I allocated for you for seven years,

وَلِمُهُورِand for the dowriesنِسَائِكُمْof your womenعِشْرُونَtwentyأَلْفَthousandدِرْهَمٍ،dirhams.

and for the dowries of your women, twenty thousand dirhams.

قَالَ:He said:مَنْWhoيَدْفَعُwill payهَذَاthisالْمَالَwealthإِلَيْنَا؟to us?

He said: Who will pay this wealth to us?

فَأَشَارَSo he pointedإِلَىtoغُلَامٍa youthأَمْرَدَbeardlessمَعَهُwith him

So he pointed to a beardless youth with him,

فَقَالَ:and said:ادْفَعْPayإِلَىtoهَذَاthis oneالْمَالَ،the wealth.

and said: Pay to this one the wealth.

فَدَفَعَSo he paidإِلَيْهِ،to him.

So he paid to him.

فَقَالَ:He said:أَتَأْذَنُDo you permitأَنْthatأَشْتَرِيَ،I buy,

He said: Do you permit that I buy,

أَصْلَحَكَmay God rectify youاللَّهُ،God,مِنْwithهَذَاthisالْمَالِwealthتَابُوتْاًa chest

may God rectify you, with this wealth a chest

أَجْعَلُهُI will place itفِيهِ؟in it?

in which I will place it?

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ،Yes.

He said: Yes.

وَأَمَرَAnd he orderedبِاِتِّخَاذِthe making ofبِرْكَةٍa pondلَهُمْfor them

And he ordered the making of a pond for them,

بَلَغَتِreachedالنَّفَقَةُthe expenseعَلَيْهَاon itعِشْرِينَtwentyأَلْفَthousandدِرْهَمٍ.dirhams.

the expense upon which reached twenty thousand dirhams.

وَحَدَّثَنَاAnd narrated to usيَزِيدُYazidالْبَرْمَكِيُّAl-Barmakiقَالَ:saying:

And Yazid Al-Barmaki narrated to us, saying:

قَدِمَArrivedالْوَاقِدِيُّAl-WaqidiمِنَfromالْمَدِينَةِMadinahبِأَسْوَإِin the worstحَالٍcondition,

Al-Waqidi arrived from Madinah in the worst condition,

فَصَارَso he wentإِلَىtoيَحْيَىYahyaوَهُوَwhile heلَاdoes notيَعْرِفُهُknow him

so he went to Yahya while he did not know him,

فَوَضَعَand placedالطَّوِيلَةَthe petitionعَلَىonرَأْسِهِ،his head.

and placed the petition on his head.

فَرَكِبَSo rodeيَحْيَىYahyaوَخَرَجَand went out,

So Yahya rode and went out,

فَرَآهُand he saw himجَالِساًsittingعَلَىatبَابِthe door ofدَارِهِhis house

and he saw him sitting at the door of his house

فِيinزِيِّthe garb ofالْقُضَاةِ،the judges.

in the garb of the judges.

فَقَامَSo stood upالْوَاقِدِيُّAl-Waqidiوَأَثْنَىand praisedعَلَيْهِhimوَدَعَاand prayedلَهُ،for him.

So Al-Waqidi stood up, praised him, and prayed for him.

وَمَرَّAnd passedيَحْيَىYahyaفِيinمَوْكِبِهِhis processionإِلَىtoدَارِthe house ofأَمِيرِthe Commander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithful

And Yahya passed in his procession to the house of the Commander of the Faithful,

ثُمَّthenانْصَرَفَhe returnedوَإِذَاand beholdالْوَاقِدِيُّAl-Waqidiفِيinمَجْلِسِهِhis sitting placeذَلِكَ،that.

then he returned, and behold, Al-Waqidi was in that same sitting place of his.

فَقَامَSo he stood upإِلَيْهِto himوَدَعَاand prayedلَهُfor himوَأَثْنَىand praisedعَلَيْهِ،him.

So he stood up to him, prayed for him, and praised him.

فَدَخَلَSo he enteredمَنْزِلَهُhis houseوَجَلَسَand satالْوَاقِدِيُّ،Al-Waqidi.

So he entered his house, and Al-Waqidi sat.

فَسَأَلَSo askedيَحْيَىYahyaعَنْهُabout himوَقَالَ:and said:

So Yahya asked about him and said:

مَنْWhoهَذَاis thisالشَّيْخُold manالرَّثُّshabbyالْهَيْأَةِ؟in appearance?

Who is this old man of shabby appearance?

فَلَمْSo did notيَعْرِفْهُknow himأَحَدٌ.anyone.

So no one knew him.

فَقَالَ:He said:وَيْحَكُمْWoe to youلَاI doأَشُكُّnot doubtإِلَّاexceptأَنَّهُthat he isشَيْخٌan elderأَصِيلٌrootedمَعَهُwith himعِلْمٌis knowledgeوَفِقْهٌ،and jurisprudence.

He said: Woe to you, I doubt not except that he is an established elder with whom is knowledge and jurisprudence.

وَدَعَاAnd he calledبِكِيسٍfor a pouchفِيهِin itأَرْبَعَةُfourآلَافِthousandدِينَارٍdinars

And he called for a pouch in which were four thousand dinars,

وَأَمَرَand orderedوَكِيلاًan agentلَهُfor himأَنْthatيَدْفَعَهَاhe pay itإِلَيْهِ،to him.

and ordered an agent of his to pay it to him.

وَكَانَAnd wasقُصَارَىthe utmost ofالْوَاقِدِيِّAl-Waqidi'sوَمُنَاهُand his hopeأَنْthatيَصِلَهُhe connect himبِأَلْفِwith a thousandدِرْهَمٍ،dirhams.

And the utmost of Al-Waqidi's hope was that he would connect him with a thousand dirhams.

فَخَرَجَSo went outالرَّسُولُthe messengerوَوَضَعَand placedالْكِيسَthe pouchفِيinحَجْرِهِ،his lap.

So the messenger went out and placed the pouch in his lap.

فَلَمَّاSo whenرَأَىhe sawعِظَمَthe greatness ofالْكِيسِthe pouchأَقْبَلَhe beganيَدْعُوprayingلِيَحْيَىfor Yahyaوَيُثْنِيand praisingعَلَيْهِhim

So when he saw the greatness of the pouch, he began praying for Yahya and praising him,

ثُمَّthenقَامَhe stood upوَانْصَرَفَand departedإِلَىtoمَنْزِلِهِhis house

then he stood up and departed to his house,

وَقَدْwhileأَخَذَتْهُhad seized himالرَّعْدَةُthe tremblingوَالْحِرْصُand eagernessأَنْthatيَرَىhe seeمَاwhatفِيinالْكِيسِthe pouchفَيَعْرِفَand knowمُنْتَهَاهُ،its utmost.

while trembling and eagerness had seized him to see what was in the pouch and know its full amount.

فَلَمَّاSo whenصَارَhe arrivedإِلَىatحُجْرَتِهِhis roomاسْتَعَارَhe borrowedمِنْfromبَعْضِsome ofجِيرَانِهِhis neighborsمِيزاناًa scaleوَصَنْجَاتٍand weights

So when he arrived at his room, he borrowed from some of his neighbors a scale and weights,

ثُمَّthenفَتَحَhe openedالْكِيسَthe pouchوَإِذَاand beholdأَرْبَعَةُfourآلَافِthousandدِينَارٍdinars

then he opened the pouch, and behold, there were four thousand dinars!

فَكَادَSo he almostأَنْtoيُغْشَىfaintعَلَيْهِupon himمِنَfromالسُّرُورِ،joy.

So he almost fainted from joy.

فَرَمَّSo he repairedمِنْofحَالِهِhis conditionوَاتَّخَذَand tookثِيَاباًgarmentsسَوِيَّةًproper

So he repaired his condition and procured proper garments,

وَعَمَدَand intendedعَلَىuponأَنْthatيَنْصَرِفَhe returnإِلَىtoالْمَدِينَةِ.Madinah.

and intended to return to Madinah.

فَلَمَّاSo whenكَانَit wasمِنَfromالْغَدِthe next dayبَكَّرَhe went earlyعَلَىtoيَحْيَىYahyaلِيُوَدِّعَهُto bid him farewell

So when the next day came, he went early to Yahya to bid him farewell.

فَدَخَلَSo he enteredوَأَنْشَدَand recited poetryفَرَآهُand he saw himعَالِماًlearnedفَقِيهاًjurisprudentمُسَامِراًconversantبَلِيغاًeloquent

So he entered and recited poetry, and found him a learned, jurisprudent, conversant, and eloquent man,

فَأُعْجِبَso he was amazedبِهِ،by him.

so he was amazed by him.

فَقَامَSo he stood upلِيُوَدِّعَهُto bid him farewellفَقَالَ:and said:أَقِمْStayعِنْدَنَاwith us

So he stood up to bid him farewell and said: Stay with us,

وَلَكَand for youفِيinكُلِّeveryحَوْلٍyearهَذَاthisالْمِقْدَارُ،amount.

and you shall have this amount every year.

فَأَقَامَSo he stayedعِنْدَهُ.with him.

So he stayed with him.
