وَحَدَّثَنِيAnd narrated to meأَيُّوبُAyyubبْنُson ofهَارُونَHarunبْنِson ofسُلَيْمَانَSulaymanبْنِson ofعَلِيٍّAliقَالَ:he said:

And Ayyub ibn Harun ibn Sulayman ibn Ali narrated to me, saying:

جَاءَCameيَحْيَىYahyaوَمَعَهُand with himابْنُهُhis sonجَعْفَرٌJa'farإِلَىtoعَبْدِAbdالصَّمَدِal-Samadبْنِson ofعَلِيٍّAli

Yahya came, and with him his son Ja'far, to Abd al-Samad ibn Ali,

فَسَلَّمَand greetedعَلَيْهِhim

and greeted him.

وَبِبَابِهِAnd at his doorفَتًىwas a young manمِنْfromوَلَدِthe descendants ofعَبْدِAbdullahاللَّهِAllahبْنِson ofعَلِيٍّAli

At his door was a young man from the descendants of Abdullah ibn Ali,

فَقَامَso he stood upإِلَىtowardsجَعْفَرَJa'farفَقَبَّلَand kissedيَدَهُ،his hand.

so he stood up to Ja'far and kissed his hand.

فَقَالَHe saidلَهُ:to him:ائْتِنِي"Come to meوَارْفَعْand raiseإِلَيَّto meحَوَائِجَكَyour needsإِلَىtoأَمِيرِthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithful

He said to him: "Come to me and submit your needs to the Commander of the Faithful,

وَقَدْand I haveأَمَرْتُorderedلَكَfor youبخَمْسَةِfiveآلافِthousandدِينَارٍ،dinars."

and I have ordered five thousand dinars for you."

فَقَالَSaidيَحْيَى:Yahya:وَقَدْ"And I haveأَمَرْتُorderedلَكَfor youبِمِثْلِهَاthe like of it

Yahya said: "And I have ordered the like of it for you,

وَأَجْرَيْتُand I have assignedعَلَيْكَfor youثَلَاثَةَthreeآلَافِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhamsفِيinكُلِّeveryشَهْرٍmonth,

and I have assigned for you three thousand dirhams every month,

فَابْعَثْso sendبِمَنْsomeone whoيَقْبِضُwill collectذَلِكَ.that."

so send someone to collect that."

فَلَمَّاWhenانْصَرَفَhe leftدَعَاهُhe called himعَبْدُAbdالصَّمَدِal-Samadفَقَالَ:and said:

When he left, Abd al-Samad called him and said:

لِمَ"Whyفَعَلْتَdid you doمَاwhatفَعَلْتَ؟you did?"

"Why did you do what you did?"

فَقَالَ:He said:أَنَا"I amابْنُthe son ofأَخِيكَyour brother

He said: "I am the son of your brother,

وَإِنَّمَاand you onlyتَصِلُنِيsupport meفِيinالسَّنَةِthe yearبِأَرْبَعَةِwith fourآلَافِthousandدِرْهَمٍ،dirhams,

and you only support me during the year with four thousand dirhams,

وَقَدْwhileأَغْنَانِيhas enriched meهَذَاthis manوَأَبُوهُand his fatherفِيinسَاعَةٍan hourوَاحِدَةٍsingle,

whereas this man and his father have enriched me in a single hour,

فَكَيْفَso howتَلُومُنِيcan you blame meعَلَىforذَلِكَ؟that?"

so how can you blame me for that?"

وَحَدَّثَAnd narratedيَحْيَىYahyaبْنُson ofمُحَمَّدٍMuhammadقَالَ:he said:

And Yahya ibn Muhammad narrated, saying:

لَمَّاWhenخَرَجَwent outالرَّشِيدُAl-RashidإِلَىtoالْقَاطُولِAl-Qatul,

When Al-Rashid went out to Al-Qatul,

قَالَhe saidلِيَحْيَى:to Yahya:يَا"Oأَبَتِfather,

he said to Yahya: "O father,

لَاdo notتَفْجَعْنِيgrieve meبِكَby losing youوَكُنْand beمَعِيwith meفِيonهَذَاthisالْوَجْهِjourneyلِأَأْنَسَso that I may take comfortبِكَ،in you."

do not grieve me by losing you, and be with me on this journey so that I may take comfort in you."

فَعَمَدَSo he resolvedعَلَىuponالشُّرُوصِsetting outمَعَهُ،with him.

So he resolved to set out with him,

فَقَالَand he saidلِرَجَاءِto Rajaبْنِson ofعَبْدِAbdالْعَزِيزِal-Azizوَكَانَwho wasعَلَىin charge ofنَفَقَاتِهِ:his expenses:

and he said to Raja ibn Abd al-Aziz, who was in charge of his expenses:

كَمْ"How muchعِنْدَis withوُكَلائِنَاour agentsمِنَofالْمَالِ؟money?"

"How much money is with our agents?"

قَالَ:He said:سَبْعُ"Sevenمِائَةِhundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ،dirhams."

He said: "Seven hundred thousand dirhams."

قَالَ:He said:فَاقْبِضْهَا"Then take itإِلَيْكَ،into your possession,"

He said: "Then take it into your possession,"

فَغَدَاso he went earlyإِلَيْهِto himفَقَبَّلَand kissedيَدَهُhis handوَمَنْصُورُwhile Mansurبْنُson ofزِيَادٍZiyadعِنْدَهُ.was with him.

so he went to him early and kissed his hand while Mansur ibn Ziyad was with him.

فَلَمَّاWhenخَرَجَwent outرَجَاءٌRaja,قَالَhe saidلِمَنْصُورٍ:to Mansur:

When Raja left, he said to Mansur:

قَدْ"I supposeظَنَنْتُthatأَنَّRajaرَجَاءًthoughtتَوَهَّمَthat weأَنَّاgrantedوَهَبْنَاhimلَهُthisهَذَاmoney,الْمَالَand weوَإِنَّمَاonlyأَمَرْنَاهُordered himبِقَبْضِهِto take possession of itلِيَكُونَso that he would beمَعَنَاwith usفِيonهَذَاthisالْوَجْهِ،journey."

"I suppose Raja imagined that we gave him this money as a gift, whereas we only ordered him to take it so he would be with us on this journey."

فَقَالَSaidمَنْصُورٌ:Mansur:فَأَنَا"Then Iأُعْلِمُهُwill inform himذَلِكَ،of that."

Mansur said: "Then I will inform him of that."

قَالَ:He said:إِذَنْ"Thenيَقُولُ:he will say:فَقُلْSo tell himلَهُtoيَقْبَلَacceptيَدِيmy handكَمَاjust asقَبَّلْتُI kissedيَدَهُ،his hand,"

He said: "Then he will say: 'So tell him to kiss my hand just as I kissed his hand,'"

فَلَاso do notتَقُلْsayلَهُto himشَيْئاً،anything,

"so do not say anything to him,"

وَتَرَكَand he leftالْمَالَthe moneyلَهُ.for him.

and he left the money for him.

وَكَانَAnd usedيَحْيَىYahyaيَقُولُ:to say:اسْرِفْ"Be extravagant,فَإِنَّfor indeedالشَّرَفَnobilityفِيlies inالسَّرَفِ.extravagance."

And Yahya used to say: "Be extravagant, for indeed nobility lies in extravagance."

وَمِنْهُمْAnd among themالْفَضْلُis al-Fadlبْنُson ofيَحْيَىYahyaالْبَرْمَكِيُّ،the Barmakid,

And among them is al-Fadl ibn Yahya al-Barmaki,

فَإِنَّهُfor heحَدَّثَنَاnarrated to usمُحَمَّدُMuhammadبْنُson ofعَلِيِّAliبْنِson ofعِيسَىIsaبْنِson ofمَاهَانَMahan

for Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Isa ibn Mahan narrated to us

عَنْfromمُحَمَّدِMuhammadبْنِson ofزَيْدٍZaydأَنَّهُthat heقَالَ:said:

from Muhammad ibn Zayd, who said:

دَخَلْتُ"I enteredعَلَىuponالْفَضْلِal-Fadlبْنِson ofيَحْيَىYahya

"I entered upon al-Fadl ibn Yahya

وَقَدْwhen he hadخَرَجَcome outمِنَofالْحَمَّامِthe bathhouseبَعْدَafterالعَصْرِthe afternoon

when he had come out of the bathhouse after the afternoon prayer

وَهُوَwhile heيَقُولُ:was saying:أَعُوذُ"I seek refugeبِاللَّهِin Allahمِنَfromالنَّارِ!the Fire!"

while he was saying: "I seek refuge in Allah from the Fire!"

فَقُلْتُ:I said:جُعِلْتُ"May I be madeفِدَاكَ!your ransom!اشْتَرِBuyهَذَاthisالْوَجْهَhandsome faceالْحَسَنَgoodlyمِنَfromالنَّارِ.the Fire."

I said: "May I be your ransom! Buy this goodly face from the Fire."

فَدَعَاSo he calledبِخَمْسِfor fiveمِائَةِhundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhamsوَقَالَ:and said:

So he called for five hundred thousand dirhams and said:

اشْتَرِ"Buyبِهَاwith themوَجْهِيmy faceالسَّاعَةَ،right now."

"Buy my face with them right now."

فَقُلْتُ:I said:جُعِلْتُ"May I be madeفِدَاكَ!your ransom!الْوَقْتُThe timeضَيِّقٌis tightوَلَكِنْbutغَداًtomorrowإِنْifشَاءَAllahاللَّهُ،wills,"

I said: "May I be your ransom! The time is short, but tomorrow, if Allah wills,"

فَقَالَ:he said:لَا"No,وَاللَّهِby Allahإِلَّاexceptالسَّاعَةَ،right now!"

he said: "No, by Allah, except right now!"

فَوَجَّهْتُSo I sentإِلَىtoالْقُضَاةِthe judgesفِيinالْجَانِبَيْنِboth sides of the cityبِثَلَاثِwith threeمِائَةِhundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhams

So I sent to the judges in both parts of the city with three hundred thousand dirhams,

وَحَمَلْتُand I carriedإِلَىtoأَبِيAbuمُحَمَّدٍMuhammadالسَّمَرْقَنْدِيِّal-Samarqandiمِنْهَاfrom itصَدْراًa major portion

and I carried a major portion of it to Abu Muhammad al-Samarqandi,

وَأَمَرْتُهُمْand I ordered themعَنْهُon his behalfبِتَفْرِيقِهِto distribute itوَفَرَّقْتُand I distributedالْبَقِيَّةَthe restبِحَضْرَتِي،in my presence.

and I instructed them on his behalf to distribute it, and I distributed the remainder in my presence.

فَلَمْNotتَغِبِdid setالشَّمْسُthe sunحَتَّىuntilفُرِّقَwas distributedذَلِكَthatكُلُّهُ.all of it.

The sun did not set until all of that had been distributed.

وَحَدَّثَAnd narratedمُحَمَّدُMuhammadبْنُson ofالْحُسَيْنِal-Husaynبْنِson ofمُصْعَبٍMus'abقَالَ:he said:

And Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn Mus'ab narrated, saying:

وَقَفَStoodالْفَضْلُal-Fadlبْنُson ofيَحْيَىYahyaبِخُرَاسَانَin Khurasanمَوْقِفاًa standingلَمْthat hasيَقِفْهُstoodأَحَدٌno oneقَطُّ،ever before.

Al-Fadl ibn Yahya took a stand in Khurasan the like of which no one had ever taken before.

خَرَجَHe went outإِلَىtoالْمَيْدَانِthe fieldلِيَضْرِبَto playبِالصَّوَالِجِpolo

He went out to the field to play polo,

فَأَمَرَso he orderedبِدَفَاتِرِthe ledgersالْبَقَايَاof arrearsالَّتِيthatعَلَىwere owed byالنَّاسِthe peopleفَأُحْضِرَتْto be brought,

so he ordered the ledgers of arrears owed by the people to be brought,

وَأَمَرَand he orderedالْحَاجِبَthe chamberlainبِالْخُرُوجِto go outإِلَىtoالنَّاسِthe peopleوَإِعْلَامِهِمْand inform themأَنَّهُthat heقَدْhasوَهَبَهَاgranted themلَهُمْto them

and he ordered the chamberlain to go out to the people and inform them that he had forgiven them all,

ثُمَّthenأَمَرَhe orderedبِهَاthemفَضُرِبَتْto be struckبِالنَّارِ،with fire.

then he ordered them to be burned with fire.

وَكَانَAnd wasمَبْلَغُthe amountذَلِكَof thatأَكْثَرَmoreمِنْthanعِشْرِينَtwentyأَلْفَthousandأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ.dirhams.

The amount of that was more than twenty million dirhams.

وَحَدَّثَAnd narratedبَعْضُsomeالْهَاشِمِيِّينَof the HashimitesعَنْfromخَلَفٍKhalafالْمِصْرِيِّthe Egyptianقَالَ:who said:

And some of the Hashimites narrated from Khalaf the Egyptian, who said:

مَرَرْتُ"I passedيَوْماًone dayبِبَابِby the door ofيَحْيَىYahyaبْنِson ofمُعَاذٍMu'adh

"I passed one day by the door of Yahya ibn Mu'adh

فَوَجَدْتُهُand I found itمُغْلَقاًclosedوَلَمْand I did not seeأَرَseeبِالْبَابِat the doorأَحَداً،anyone.

and I found it closed, and I did not see anyone at the door,

فَأَنْكَرْتُSo I found that strangeذَلِكَ،andفَدَنَوْتُapproachedإِلَىtoالْبَابِthe doorوَاسْتَفْتَحْتُand asked it to be opened,

so I found that strange, and I approached the door and asked to enter,

فَفُتِحَand it was openedلِيfor meوَدَخَلْتُand I enteredعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَأَلْتُهُand asked himعَنْaboutحَالِهِhis condition,

and it was opened for me, and I entered upon him and asked him about his condition.

فَذَكَرَHe mentionedأَنَّهُthat heتَوَارَىwas hidingعَنْfromغُرَمَائِهِ،his creditors.

He mentioned that he was hiding from his creditors.

فَقُلْتُ:I said:وَكَمْ"And how muchلِدُيَّانِكَdo your creditorsعَلَيْكَ؟owe from you? / have against you?"

I said: "And how much do your creditors have against you?"

فَقَالَ:He said:ثَلَاثُمِائَةِ"Three hundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ،dirhams."

He said: "Three hundred thousand dirhams."

ثُمَّThenمَضَيْتُI wentإِلَىtoالْفَضْلِal-Fadlبْنِson ofيَحْيَىYahyaفَأَخْبَرْتُهُand informed him,

Then I went to al-Fadl ibn Yahya and informed him,

فَسَكَتَ،so he remained silent.

so he remained silent.

فَلَمَّاWhenانْصَرَفْتُI returnedإِلَىtoمَنْزِلِيmy houseكَتَبَhe wroteإِلَّي:to me:

When I returned to my house, he wrote to me:

إِنَّكَ"Youدَلَلْتَنَاhave guided usعَلَىtoمَكْرُمَةٍa noble deedفَشَكَرْنَاكَso we thanked youعَلَىforذَلِكَthat

"You have guided us to a noble deed, so we thanked you for that

وَأَمَرْنَاand we have orderedلَكَfor youبِمِائَةِone hundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhamsلِدَلَالَتِكَfor your guidance

and have ordered one hundred thousand dirhams for you for your guidance,

وَبَعَثْنَاand we have sentإِلَيْكَto youبِثَلَاثِمِائَةِthree hundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhamsلِتُوَصِّلَهَاso that you may deliver itإِلَىtoيَحْيَىYahyaبْنِson ofمُعَاذٍ،Mu'adh."

and we have sent you three hundred thousand dirhams to deliver to Yahya ibn Mu'adh."

فَأَوْصَلْتُهَاSo I delivered itإِلَيْهِto himفَقَضَىand he paid offدَيْنَهُhis debtبِهَا.with it.

So I delivered it to him, and he paid off his debt with it.

قِيلَ:It was said:وَدَفَعَAnd Hamzaحَمْزَةُson ofبْنُJa'farجَعْفَرِson ofبْنِSulaymanسُلَيْمَانَhandedإِلَىtoأَبِيAbuالنَّضِيرِal-Nadirالشَّاعِرِthe poetرُقْعَةًa noteلِيُوَصِّلَهَاto deliverإِلَىtoالْفَضْلِal-Fadl

It was said: Hamza ibn Ja'far ibn Sulayman handed Abu al-Nadir the poet a note to deliver to al-Fadl,

يَسْأَلُهُasking himفِيهَاin itالْإِذْنَfor permissionفِيtoابْتِيَاعِpurchaseضَيْعَةٍan estateبِفَارِسَ،in Fars.

asking him in it for permission to purchase an estate in Fars.

وَكَانَAnd wasمَبْلَغُthe amountمَاof whatيُوزَنُwould be weighedفِيasثَمَنِهَاits priceمِائَةَone hundredأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ،dirhams.

The amount to be paid for its price was one hundred thousand dirhams.

قَالَSaidأَبُوAbuالنَّضِيرِ:al-Nadir:فَأَخَذْتُهَا"So I took itمِنْهُfrom himفَدَفَعْتُهَاand handed itإِلَىtoالْفَضْلِal-Fadl."

Abu al-Nadir said: "So I took it from him and handed it to al-Fadl."

فَنَظَرَHe lookedفِيهَاat itوَوَضَعَهَاand laid it aside,

He looked at it and laid it aside,

فَاغْتَمَمْتُso I became distressedلِمَاbecause of whatرَأَيْتُI sawمِنْofقِلَّةِhis lackنَشَاطِهِof enthusiasmلَهَا،for it.

so I became distressed because of what I saw of his lack of enthusiasm for it.

فَلَمَّاWhenأَصْبَحْتُmorning cameقِيلَit was saidلِي:to me:خُزَّانُ"The treasurersبَيْتِof the houseالْمَالِof wealthيَطْلُبُونَكَ،are looking for you."

When morning came, it was said to me: "The treasurers of the treasury are looking for you."

فَظَنَنْتُSo I thoughtأَنَّهُthatنَظَرَhe had lookedلِيout for meبِشَيْءٍwith somethingفِيregardingخَاصَّتِي،my own affairs.

So I thought that he had granted me something for my own personal affairs,

فَأَتَيْتُهُمْso I went to themفَقَالُواand they saidلِي:to me:أَحْضِرْ"Bringمَنْsomeone whoيَحْمِلُwill carryالْمِائَةَthe hundredأَلْفٍthousandإِلَىtoصَاحِبِthe owner ofالرُّقْعَةِ،the note."

so I went to them and they said to me: "Bring someone to carry the hundred thousand to the owner of the note."

فَحَمَلْتُهَاSo I carried itإِلَىtoحَمْزَةَ،Hamza.

So I carried it to Hamza.

قَالَSaidحَمْزَةُ:Hamza:فَصِرْتُ"So I wentإِلَيْهِto himفَقُلْتُ:and said:أَصْلَحَMay Allah set rightاللَّهُthe Amir!الْأَمِيرَ! وصلْت إليّ صلتكوَصَلَتْHas reached meإِلَيَّyourصِلْتُكَgenerosity,

Hamza said: "So I went to him and said: 'May Allah set right the Amir! Your generosity has reached me,

وَلَاand no,وَاللَّهِby Allah,مَاdo I knowأَدْرِيhowكَيْفَto thankأَشْكُرُكَyouإِلَّاexceptبِقَوْلِby the saying ofأَبِيAbuالنَّضِيرِal-Nadirفِيكَ:concerning you:'

and by Allah, I do not know how to thank you except by the saying of Abu al-Nadir concerning you:"

وَلِلنَّاسِ"And for the peopleمَعْرُوفٌis renownوَفِيهِمْand among themصَنَائِعُare favors......وَلَنْand noneيَجْبُرَwill mendالْأَحْزَانَsorrowsإِلَّاexceptجِدَاthe generosity ofالْفَضْلِal-Fadl

"People have renown and among them are favors ... and none will mend sorrows except the generosity of al-Fadl.

إِذَاIfمَاeverالْعَطَايَاgiftsلَمْare notتَكُنْBarmakid,بَرْمَكِيَّةًthen those......فَتِلْكَgiftsالْعَطَايَاneitherمَاpleaseتُمَرُّnorوَلَاareتُحْلَىsweetened."

If gifts are not Barmakid, then those are gifts that neither please nor are sweetened."

قَالَSaidأَبُوAbuالنَّضِيرِ:al-Nadir:فَالْتَفَتَ"So turnedإِلَيَّto meالْفَضْلُal-Fadlفَقَالَ:and said:يَا'OأَبَاAbuالنَّضِيرِal-Nadir,جَزَاؤُكَyour rewardعِنْدِي،is with me,'

Abu al-Nadir said: "So al-Fadl turned to me and said: 'O Abu al-Nadir, your reward is with me,'

فَوَصَلَنِيso he rewarded meحَتَّىuntilأَغْنَانِي.he made me wealthy.

and he rewarded me until he made me wealthy.
