وَحَدَّثَنَاAnd narrated to usأَبُوAbuطَالِبٍTolibالْجَعْفَرِيُّal-Ja'fariقَالَ:saying:
And Abu Talib al-Ja'fari narrated to us, saying:
حَدَّثَنِيNarrated to meسُلَيْمَانُSulaymanبْنُson ofأَبِيAbuجَعْفَرٍJa'far
Sulayman ibn Abi Ja'far narrated to me
أَنَّthatمُحَمَّدَMuhammadبْنَson ofإِبْرَاهِيمَIbrahimالْإِمَامَal-Imam
that Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Imam
رَكِبَrodeإِلَىtoالْفَضْلِal-Fadlبْنِson ofيَحْيَىYahyaيَوْماًone day
rode to al-Fadl ibn Yahya one day,
وَكَانَand wasقَدْalreadyرَكِبَهُburdened himدَيْنٌa debt
and he had been burdened by a debt,
وَحَمَلَand he carriedحُقَّةًa small boxفِيهَاin which wasجَوْهَرٌ،jewels,
and he brought a small box containing jewels.
فَلَمَّاSo whenوَصَلَhe reachedإِلَيْهِhimقَالَ:he said:
When he reached him, he said:
قَدْIndeedلَزِمَنِيhas become binding upon meدَيْنٌa debtأَحْوَجَنِيthat made me in needإِلَىofاحْتِيَالِprocuringأَلْفِone thousandأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍ،dirhams,
"A debt has burdened me, making me in need of procuring one million dirhams,
وَعَلِمْتُand I knewأَنَّthatالتُجَّارَthe merchantsلَاdo notيَسْمَحُونَallowبِإِخْرَاجِdispensingمِثْلِهَاthe likes of it
and I knew that merchants would not allow dispensing such an amount,
وَإِنْeven ifوَثَّقْنَاwe securedالرَّهْنَthe pledge
even if we secured the pledge.
وَلَكَAnd you haveمُعَامِلُونَclientsوَتُجَّارٌand merchantsمُطِيعُونَwho are obedient
You have obedient clients and merchants,
وَمَعِيand with meرَهْنٌis a pledge
and I have a pledge with me.
فَإِنْSo ifرَأَيْتَyou see fitأَنْtoتَأْمُرَorderبِقَبْضِهِtaking it
If you see fit to order taking it
وَحَمْلِand carryingهَذَاthisالْمَالِwealthإِلَيْنَاto usفَأَنْتَthen youأَوْلَىmost fittingبِذَلِكَ،for that,
and bringing this wealth to us, then you are most fitting for that."
فَقَالَSo saidالْفَضْلُ:al-Fadl:
al-Fadl said:
نَعَمْ،Yes,لَنَاwe haveتُجَّارٌmerchantsيُطِيعُونَنَاwho obey usوَيُسَارِعُونَand hastenإِلَىtoأَمْرِنَا،our command,
"Yes, we have merchants who obey us and hasten to our command,
وَلَكِنْbutمَاwhatهَذَاis thisالرَّهْنُ؟pledge?
but what is this pledge?"
فَوَضَعَSo he placedالْحُقَّةَthe small boxبَيْنَbetweenيَدَيْهِ،his hands,
He placed the small box before him,
فَفَتَحَهَاand he opened itحَتَّىuntilنَظَرَhe lookedإِلَيْهَاat it
and he opened it and looked at it,
فَأُعْجِبَand he was amazedبِالْجَوْهَرِby the jewelsالَّذِيthatفِيهَا،were in it,
and he was amazed by the jewels inside it.
ثُمَّThenأَمَرَhe orderedبِإِعَادَتِهَاits returnإِلَىtoحَالِهَاits conditionوَقَالَ:and said:
Then he ordered it to be returned to its state and said:
ضَعْPlaceخَاتَمَكَyour signet ringعَلَيْهَا،upon it,
"Place your signet ring upon it."
فَخَتَمَهَا،So he sealed it,
So he sealed it.
قَالَHeفَقَالَsaid, so saidالْفَضْلُ:al-Fadl:
Then al-Fadl said:
إِنَّIndeedنُجْحَsuccess ofالْحَاجَةِthe needأَنْis thatتُقِيمَyou stayفِيinمَنْزِلِيmy houseالَّذِيwhichأَنَاIفِيهِ،am in,
"The success of [fulfilling] the need is that you stay in my house where I am."
فَقَالَ:He said:يَشُقُّIt is difficultعَلَيَّupon meالْمَقَامُ،staying,
He said: "Staying is difficult for me."
فَقَالَ:He said:وَمَاAnd whatيَشُقُّis difficultعَلَيْكَ؟upon you?
He said: "And what is difficult upon you?
إِنْIfرَأَيْتَyou see fitأَنْtoتَلْبَسَwearمِنْfromثِيَابِنَاour clothesشَيْئاًsomethingدَعَوْتُI will provideلَكَfor youبِهِwith it
If you see fit to wear something of our clothes, I will provide it for you,
وَإِلَّاand otherwiseفَابْعَثْthen sendإِلَىtoمَنْزِلِكَyour houseلِتُؤْتَىso that there be broughtبِهِ،with it,
or else send to your house so that they may be brought to you."
فَأَقَامَSo he stayedعِنْدَهُ،with him,
So he stayed with him.
وَنَهَضَAnd got upالْفَضْلُal-Fadlفَدَعَاand calledوَكِيلَهُhis agent
Al-Fadl got up and called his agent,
وَأَمَرَand orderedأَنْthatيُحْمَلَbe carriedإِلَىtoمَنْزِلِthe house ofمُحَمَّدِMuhammadبْنِson ofإِبْرَاهِيمَIbrahimأَلْفُone thousandأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhamsمُبَدَّرَةٍin bags
and ordered that one million dirhams in bags be carried to the house of Muhammad ibn Ibrahim,
وَيَضَعَهَاand that he place themقُبَالَةَoppositeمَجْلِسِهِhis sitting placeلِيَرَاهَاso that he sees themإِذَاwhenدَخَلَ،he enters,
and place them opposite his seating area so he would see them when he entered.
فَفَعَلَSo didالْوَكِيلُthe agentذَلِكَ،that,
The agent did that,
وَانْصَرَفَand returnedمُحَمَّدٌMuhammadإِلَىtoمَنْزِلِهِhis houseمَعَwithالْمَغْرِبِ،sunset,
and Muhammad returned to his house at sunset.
فَلَمَّاSo whenدَخَلَhe enteredوَقَعَتْfellعَيْنُهُhis eyeعَلَىuponالْمَالِthe wealthفَقَالَ:so he said:
When he entered, his eyes fell upon the wealth, so he said:
مَاWhatهَذَا؟is this?
"What is this?"
قَالُوا:They said:وَجَّهَSentبِهِitالْفَضْلُ،al-Fadl,
They said: "Al-Fadl sent it."
قَالَ:He said:أَحْسَنَMay [Allah] reward wellاللَّهُGodجَزَاءَهُhis reward
He said: "May God reward him well,
فَإِنَّهُfor indeed heوَإِنْeven ifكَانَhe wasوَجَّهَsendingبِذَلِكَthatعَلَىon the basis ofمَاwhatرَهَنَّاهُwe pledged to him
for even though he sent this based on what we pledged to him,
فَقَدْyet indeedظَهَرَhas appearedلَنَاto usمِنْfromعِنَايَتِهِhis concernمَاwhatقَدَّرْنَاهُwe estimatedفِيهِ،regarding it,
there has become apparent to us of his care more than we estimated."فَقَدْ
قَالُوا:They said:وَمَاAnd what aboutالرَّهْنُ؟the pledge?
They said: "And what about the pledge?"
قَالَ:He said:الْحُقَّةُ،The small box,
He said: "The small box."
قَالُوا:They said:قَدْIndeedرَدَّهَاhe returned itتَحْتَunderخَاتَمِكَ،your seal,
They said: "He has returned it under your seal."
فَقَالَ:So he said:أَيْنَWhereهِيَ؟is it?
He said: "Where is it?"
فَأُتِيَSo there was broughtبِالْحُقَّةِto him the small boxفَفَتَحَهَاand he opened itحَتَّىuntilنَظَرَhe lookedإِلَيْهَاat itوَفَرِحَand he rejoicedفَرَحاًwith rejoicingشَدِيداًintense,
So the small box was brought to him, and he opened it and looked at it, rejoicing greatly.
فَعَدَاSo he ranإِلَىtoالْفَضْلِal-Fadlفَوَجَدَهُand found himقَدْalreadyسَبَقَهُpreceded himإِلَىtoدَارِthe house ofأَمِيرِthe Commander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithful
He rushed to al-Fadl, but found that he had already gone ahead to the house of the Commander of the Faithful.
فَتَبِعَهُSo he followed himفَلَمْand did notيَزَلْceaseوَاقِفاًstandingيَنْتَظِرُهُwaiting for him
He followed him and kept standing, waiting for him
حَتَّىuntilخَرَجَcame outالْفَضْلُal-Fadlمِنْfromبَابٍa doorآخَرَother
until al-Fadl came out through another door.
فَصَارَSo he wentإِلَىtoمَنْزِلِهِhis houseوَشَكَرَand thankedلَهُhim forمَاwhatكَانَwasمِنْهُfrom himوَانْصَرَفَand turned awayعَنْهُ،from him,
He went to his house, thanked him for what he had done, and departed from him.
فَلَمَّاSo whenدَخَلَhe enteredمَنْزِلَهُhis houseوَجَدَhe foundفِيهِin itأَلْفَone thousandأَلْفِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhamsسِوَىother thanالْأُولَى،the first ones,
When he entered his house, he found in it another one million dirhams besides the first ones.
فَقَالَ:He said:مَاWhatهَذَا؟is this?
He said: "What is this?"
قَالُوا:They said:بَعَثَSentبِهِitالْفَضْلُ،al-Fadl,
They said: "Al-Fadl sent it."
فَأَتَاهُSo he came to himفَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:
So he went to him and said:
جُعِلْتُMay I be madeفِدَاكَ!your ransom!
"May I be made your ransom!
أَمَاWasكَانَthere notفِيمَاin whatوَجَّهْتَyou sentبِهِwith itأَمْسِyesterdayكِفَايَةٌsufficiencyحَتَّىso thatأَرْدَفْتَهُyou followed itبِمِثْلِهِ؟with its like?
Was not what you sent yesterday sufficient, that you followed it with its like?"
فَقَالَ:He said:إِنَّهُIndeed itوَاللَّهِby Godطَالَتْgrew longعَلَيَّupon meلَيْلَتِيmy night
He said: "By God, my night grew long upon me,
فَرَكِبْتُso I rodeإِلَىtoأَمِيرِthe Commander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithful
so I rode to the Commander of the Faithful
وَأَعْلَمْتُهُand informed himحَالَكَof your condition
and informed him of your condition.
فَأَمَرَنِيSo he commanded meبِالتَّقْدِيرِto designate an amountلَكَfor you
He commanded me to designate an amount for you,
فَقَدَّرْتُso I estimatedمِائَةَone hundredأَلْفِthousandدِينَارٍ،dinars,
and I estimated one hundred thousand dinars.
فَمَاSo stillزَالَhe continuedيَقُولُsayingوَيُمَاكِسُنِيand bargaining with me
He kept speaking and bargaining with me
حَتَّىuntilوَقَفْتُI stoppedعَلَىatأَلْفِone thousandأَلْفٍthousand
until I stopped at one million.
فَأَمَرَSo he orderedلَكَfor youبِهَاwith it
So he ordered it for you,
فَلَمْand I did notأَنْصَرِفْturn backإِلَىtoالْمَنْزِلِthe houseحَتَّىuntilحُمِلَwas carriedالْمَالُthe wealthإِلَيْكَ،to you,
and I did not return to the house until the wealth was carried to you."
فَقَالَSo saidمُحَمَّدٌ:Muhammad:
Muhammad said:
لَسْتُI am notأَجِدُfindingلَكَfor youشُكْراًgratitudeأَقْضِيby which I fulfillبِهِitحَقَّكَyour rightغَيْرَother thanأَنَّهُthat it isعَلَىuponابْنِthe son ofمُحَمَّدِMuhammadبْنِson ofعَلِيٍّAli
"I do not find any gratitude by which I can fulfill your right, other than that it is incumbent upon the son of Muhammad ibn Ali
وَعَلَيْهِand upon himمِنَfromالْأَيْمَانِoathsالْمُغَلَّظَةِthe stern/binding ones
and upon him are stern oaths
إِنْthat ifوَقَفْتُI standبِبَابِat the door ofأَحَدٍanyoneسِوَاكَother than youأَبَداًever
that I will never stand at the door of anyone other than you ever again
حَتَّىuntilأَلْقَىI meetاللَّهَGodجَلَّHe is majesticوَعَزَّand mighty
until I meet God, majestic and mighty,
وَلَاand norأَسْأَلُwill I askأَحَداًanyoneحَاجَةًfor a needمَاas long asبَقِيتُI remain aliveسِوَاكَ،other than you,
and I will not ask anyone for a need as long as I live, other than you."
فَكَانَSo he wasلَاnotيَرْكَبُridingإِلَىtoأَحَدٍanyoneسِوَىother thanالْفَضْلِal-Fadl
So he would not ride to anyone other than al-Fadl,
وَلَاand norيَقِفُstandبِبَابِat the door ofأَحَدٍanyoneغَيْرِهِ.other than him.
nor stand at the door of anyone other than him.
