Years passed. The coming and going of the seasons made the life of the short animals pass in turn. A time came when no one remembered any of the days prior to the rebellion and the revolution, except Clover, Benjamin, the crow Moses, and a number of pigs.

As for Snowball, he had been forgotten, as had Boxer, except for a few of his acquaintances. Clover had become a strong old mare, stiff in her joints and with leakage in her eyes.

Indeed, she had surpassed the age of retirement for two years. But none of the animals had retired. And the talk of allocating a corner of the pasture for the elderly had dwindled and ended a long time ago.

Napoleon had become an aged pig weighing fifty kilograms. Squealer reached such obesity that it was difficult for him to see with his own eyes.
