مَهْمَاwhateverحَدَثَhappens
Whatever happens
كَانَتْshe wasعَلَىabout toوَشَكَّهَاon the verge ofالتَّفَوُّهِutteringبِكَلِمَةٍa wordاحْتِجَاجٍof protest
She was about to utter a word of protest
لَكِنْbut
But
فِيinتِلْكَthatاللَّحْظَةِmomentبِالذَّاتِexactly::
In that exact moment:
وَكَأَنَّas ifأَحَدًاsomeoneقَدْhadأَعْطَاهَاgiven herإِشَارَةًsignalالْبَدْءِto start
As if someone had given her the signal to start:
اِنْفَجَرَتْburstالْخَرَافُthe sheepبِثَّغَاءٍwith bleatingعَظِيمٍgreat
The sheep burst into great bleating:
الْخَيْرِthe goodفِيinالأَقْدَامِthe hoovesالأَرْبَعَةِfourوَالْخَيْرِand the goodالأَكْثَرِthe mostفِيinالْقَدَمَيْنِthe two feet
The good in the four hooves and the most good in the two feet.
بَقِيَتْShe keptتَرَدَّدَتْrepeatingذَٰلِكَthatلِمُدَّةِfor a duration ofخَمْسٍfiveدَقَائِقَminutesبِدُونِwithoutاِنْقِطَاعٍinterruption
She kept repeating that for five minutes without interruption.
وَحِينَمَاAnd whenهَدَأَتْcalmed downالْخَرَافُthe sheepتَلاَشَتْfadedفُرْصَةُthe opportunityالتَّعْبِيرِto expressعَنْofأَيِّanyاحْتِجَاجٍprotest
And when the sheep calmed down, the opportunity to express any protest faded.
فَالْخِنَازِيرُfor the pigsقَدْhadعَادَتْreturnedإِلَىtoقَصْرِthe palaceالْمَزْرَعَةِthe farm
For the pigs had returned to the palace of the farm.
أَحَسَّBenjamin feltبِمِنْخَارٍa snoutعَلَىonكَتَفِهِhis shoulderنَظَرَHe lookedحَوْلَaroundفَرَأَىand sawكْلُوفَرClover
Benjamin felt a snout on his shoulder. He looked around and saw Clover.
كَانَتْShe wasعَيْنَاهَاher eyesالْمُسِنَّتَانِthe agedضَائِعَتَانِlostأَكْثَرَmoreمِنْthanأَيِّanyوَقْتٍtimeمَضَىgone
Her aged eyes were more lost than ever.
وَمِنْAnd withoutأَنْthatتَقُولَshe saysشَيْئًاanythingتَعَلَّقَتْshe clungفِيtoعُرْفِهِhis maneوَقَادَتْهُand led himبِلُطْفٍgentlyإِلَىtoطَرَفِthe edgeالْحَظِيرَةِof the barnالْكَبِيرَةِthe large
And without saying anything, she clung to his mane and gently led him to the edge of the large barn.
حَيْثُwhereكُتِبَتْhad writtenالْوَصَايَاthe commandmentsالسَّبْعُseven
Where the seven commandments had been written.
فَوَقَفَاAnd they stoodلِدَقِيقَةٍfor a minuteأَوْorدَقِيقَتَيْنِtwo minutesيَنْظُرَانِlookingإِلَىatالْحَائِطِthe wallالْمَصْبُوغِpaintedبِالْقَطْرَانِwith tarوَإِلَىand toالْحُرُوفِthe lettersالْمَكْتُوبَةِwrittenبِالْلَّوْنِin colorالأَبْيَضِwhite
And they stood for a minute or two, looking at the wall painted with tar, and at the letters written in white.
ثُمَّThenقَالَتْshe saidفِيinالْآخِرِthe endإِنَّIndeedنَظَرِيmy eyesightلَاdoes notيُسَعِفُنِيhelp meحَتَّىevenوَأَنَاI amشَابَةٌyoungلَمْI could notيَكُنْbeفِيinمَقْدُورِيmy capacityقِرَاءَةَto readمَاwhatهُوَit isمَكْتُوبٌwrittenهُنَاكَthere
Then she said at the end: Indeed, my eyesight does not help me even when I am young; I could not read what is written there.
لَكِنْButيَبْدُوit seemsلِيto meأَنَّthatثَمَّةَthere isتَغْيِيرًاa changeطَرَأَhas occurredعَلَىonالْحَائِطِthe wall
But it seems to me that there is a change that has occurred on the wall.
هَلْIsالْوَصَايَاthe commandmentsالسَّبْعُsevenمَازَالَتْstillعَلَىare onحَالَهَاits conditionيَاOبَنْيَامِينُBenjamin
Is the seven commandments still in its condition, Benjamin?
لِلْمَرَّةِFor the first timeالأُولَىthe firstيَتَخَلَّىhe abandonsبَنْيَامِينُBenjaminعَنْaboutمَبَادِئِهِhis principlesوَقَرَأَand readلَهَاto herمَاwhatهُوَit isمَكْتُوبٌwrittenعَلَىonحَائِطٍthe wallلَمْthere wasيَكُنْbeهُنَاكَthereالآنَnowسِوَىonlyوَصِيَّةٍa commandmentواحِدَةٍone
For the first time, Benjamin abandons his principles and read to her what is written on a wall where there is now only one commandment,
