عَلَىonأَنْهُمْthat theyإِذَاifلَمْnotيَسْتَقِيمُواbe upright؛;لَاdo notنَسْتَقِيمwe be uprightلَهُمْfor them
If they do not remain upright, we shall not be upright for them.
وَالْمُعَاهِدُونَAnd the alliesيَنْقَسِمُونَare dividedإِلَىintoثَلاثَةِthreeأَقْسَامٍcategories
And the allies are divided into three categories:
قِسْمٍA categoryاسْتَقَامُواthey were uprightعَلَىonعَهْدِهِمtheir covenantوَأَمِنَّاهُمْand we gave them security؛;فَيَجِبُit is necessaryعَلَيْنَاfor usأَنْtoنَسْتَقِيمَwe be uprightلَهُمْfor them؛;لِقَوْلِهِbecause of His sayingتَعَالَىExalted be He::﴿(فَمَاSo ifاسْتَقَامُواthey are uprightلَكُمْfor youفَاسْتَقِيمُواthen be uprightلَهُمْfor themإِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahيُحِبُّlovesالْمُتَّقِينَthe righteous
A category is those who are upright on their covenant and we have given them security; it is necessary for us to be upright for them; because of His saying: 'So if they are upright for you, then be upright for them. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous.'
وَقِسْمٌAnd a categoryخَانُواthey betrayedوَنَقَضُواand violatedالْعَهْدَthe covenant؛;فَهَؤُلَاءَfor theseلَاdo notعَهْدٌcovenantلَهُمْfor them؛;لِقَوْلِهِbecause of His sayingتَعَالَىExalted be He::﴿(وَإِنْAnd ifنَّكَثُواthey breakأَيْمَانَهُمْtheir oathsمِنْfromبَعْدِafterعَهْدِهِمtheir covenantوَطَعَنُواand struckفِيinدِينِكُمْyour religionفَاقْتُلُواthen killأَيْمَةَthe leadersالْكُفْرِof disbeliefإِنَّهُمْIndeed, theyلَاdo notأَيْمَنَoathsلَهُمْfor them﴾)
And a category that betrayed and violated the covenant; these do not have a covenant for them; because of His saying: 'And if they break their oaths after their covenant and attack your religion, then kill the leaders of disbelief. Indeed, they do not have oaths for them.'
وَقِسْمٌAnd a categoryثَالِثٌthirdيَظْهَرُونَthey appearالِاسْتِقَامَةَuprightnessلَنَاfor us،لَكِنَّنَاbut weنَخَافُwe fearمِنْfromخِيَانَتِهِمtheir betrayal؛;بِمَعْنَىmeaningأَنَّهُthat heتُوجَدُthere existقَرَائِنُcluesتَدُلُّindicateعَلَىthatأَنَّهُمْthat theyيُرِيدُونَwantالْخَيَانَةَbetrayal؛;فَهَؤُلَاءَfor theseقَالَsaidاللَّهُAllahفِيهِمabout them::﴿(وَإِمَّاAnd ifتَخَافَنَّyou fearمِنْofقَوْمٍpeopleخِيَانَةًbetrayalفَأَنْبِذْthen cast awayإِلَيْهِمto themعَلَىwithسَوَاءٍequalityإِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahلَاdoes notيُحِبُّloveالْخَانِينَthe betrayers﴾)
And a third category shows uprightness to us, but we fear their betrayal; meaning there exist clues that indicate that they want to betray; for these Allah said about them: 'And if you fear from a people betrayal, then cast away to them on equality. Indeed, Allah does not love the betrayers.'
أَيْ:That is:أَنْبِذْcast awayإِلَيْهِمto themعَهْدَهُمْtheir covenant؛;فَقُلْso sayلَاdo notعَهْدٌcovenantبَيْنَنَاbetween usوَبَيْنَكُمْand between you
That is: cast away to them their covenant; so say: there is no covenant between us and you.
فَإِذَاSo ifقَالَsaidقَائِلٌsomeone saysكَيْفَhowيُنْبَذُcast awayالْعَهْدَthe covenantإِلَيْهِمto themوَهُمْwhile they areمُعَاهِدُونَallied?؟?
So if someone says: how can we cast away the covenant to them while they are allies?
قُلْنَاWe saidلِخَوْفِfor fearالْخِيَانَةِof betrayal;فَهَؤُلَاءَfor theseلَاdo notنَأْمَنُهُمْwe trust them;لِأَنَّهُbecause itيُمْكِنُmay beفِيinيَوْمٍa dayمِنْofالأَيَّامِthe daysأَنْthatيُصْبِحُونَاthey become against us;؛;فَهَؤُلَاءَfor theseنُنْبِذُwe cast awayإِلَيْهِمto themعَلَىinسَوَاءٍequality,وَلَاand do notنَخُونَهُمْbetray themمَا دَامَas long asالْعَهْدُthe covenantقَائِمًاis standing;لِأَنَّهُbecause ifلَوْifقَالَsaidالْمُسْلِمُونَthe Muslims:نَحْنُweنَخَافُfearمِنْهُمْfrom them,الْخِيَانَةَ؛of betrayal;سَنْبَادِرُهُمْwe will initiate against themبِالْقِتَالِwith fighting.
We said: for the fear of betrayal; for these do not we trust them; because it may be in a day from the days that they become against us; so for these we cast away to them in equality, and we do not betray them as long as the covenant is standing; because if the Muslims said: we fear betrayal from them, we would initiate against them with fighting.
قُلْنَاWe saidهَذَاthis،حَرَامٌis forbidden,لَاdo notتُقَاتِلُواfight themحَتَّىuntilتُنْبِذُواyou cast awayإِلَيْهِمto themالْعَهْدَthe covenant.
We said: this is forbidden, do not fight them until you cast away the covenant to them.
وَقَوْلُهُAnd His saying(الْمُتَّقِينَthe righteous))::الْمُتَّقُونَthe piousهُمareالَّذِينَthose whoاتَّخَذُواthey tookوِقَايَةًprecaution
And His saying: the righteous; they are those who took precaution.
