With your tongue and your heart, believe in your heart that Allah is greater than everything, and that He has pride in the heavens and the earth, and likewise with your tongue you declare His greatness; you say: Allah is the Greatest!

وَكَانَتْAnd it wasمِنْofهُدًىguidanceالنَّبِيِّthe Prophetوَأَصْحَابِهِand his companionsأَنَّهُمْthat theyيُكَبِّرُونَdeclare greatnessكُلَّمَاwheneverعَلَوْاthey ascendedنَشَزَa heightأَيْthat isمُرْتَفَعَاتٍa risingوَهَذَاand thisفِيinالسَّفَرِtravelلَأَنَّbecauseالْإِنْسَانَa personإِذَاifعَلَاhe ascendsفِيinمَكَانِهِhis placeقَدْmayيَشْعُرُfeelفِيinقَلْبِهhis heartأَنَّهُthat he isمُسْتَعْلٍsuperiorعَلَىoverغَيْرِهِothersفَيَقُولُso he saysاللَّهُAllahأَكْبَرُis the greatestمِنْthanأَجَلَdue toيُخَفِّفُto lessenتِلْكَthatالْعُلْيَاsuperiorityالَّتِيthat whichشَعَرَ بِهَاhe feltحِينَwhenعَلَاhe ascendedوَارْتَفَعَand rose

And it was part of the guidance of the Prophet and his companions that they would declare greatness whenever they ascended a height; this is during travel; because a person, when he ascends in his place, may feel in his heart that he is superior to others, and so he says: Allah is the Greatest; in order to lessen that superiority he feels when he rises.

وَكَانُواAnd they wereإِذَاifهَبَطُواthey descendedقَالُواthey saidسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِGlory be to Allahلَأَنَّbecauseالنُّزُولِthe descentسُفُلٌis inferiorityفَيَقُولُso he saysسُبْحَانَ اللَّهِGlory be to Allahأَيْthat isأُنزِهُهُI glorify Himعَنْfromالسُّفُلِthe inferiorityالَّذِيthat which

And they, when they descended, would say: Glory be to Allah because descent is inferiority; so he would say: Glory be to Allah; that is, I glorify Him from the inferiority that I am now in.

وَقَوْلُهُAnd His sayingتَكْبِيرًاis declaration of greatnessهَذَاthisمَصْدَرٌsourceمُؤَكَّدٌaffirmedيُرَادُ بِهِmeansالتَّعظِيمُthe glorificationأَيْthat isكَبِّرْهُdeclare Him greatتَكْبِيرًاwith a great declaration

And His saying: "is declaration of greatness" is an affirmed source intended for glorification; that is, declare Him great with a great declaration.

وَالَّذِيAnd whatنَسْتَفِيدُهُwe benefit fromمِنَfromالنَّاحِيَةِthe aspectالْمَسْلَكِيَّةِof conductفِيinهَذِهِthisالْآيَةِverseأَنْthatالْإِنْسَانَa personيَشْعُرُfeelsبِكَمَالِwith perfectionغِنَى اللَّهِof Allah's richnessعَزَّ وَجَلَّthe Mighty and Majesticعَنْfromكُلِّ أَحَدٍeveryoneوَانْفِرَادِهand His uniquenessبِالْمُلْكِby the dominionوَتَمَامِand completenessعِزَّتِهِof His honorوَسُلْطَانِهِand His authorityوَحِينَئِذٍand thenيُعَظِّمُmagnifiesاللَّهَAllahسُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىExalted and High is Heبِمَاwith whatيَسْتَحِقُّHe deservesأَنْto beيُعَظَّمَ بِهِbe magnifiedبِقَدْرِto the extentاسْتِطَاعَتِهِof his ability

And what we benefit from the aspect of conduct in this verse is that a person feels the perfection of Allah's richness, the Mighty and Majestic, from everyone, and His uniqueness by dominion, and the completeness of His honor and authority; and then he magnifies Allah, Exalted and High is He, with what He deserves to be magnified to the extent of his ability.

وَنَسْتَفِيدُAnd we benefitحَمْدَ اللَّهِpraise Allahتَعَالَىthe ExaltedعَلَىforتَنْزِيهِهِHis purityعَنْfromالْعُيُوبِthe defectsكَمَاjust asيُحْمَدُHe is praisedعَلَىforصِفَاتِthe attributesالْكَمَالِof perfection

And we benefit from praising Allah, the Exalted, for His purity from defects; just as He is praised for the attributes of perfection.

The sixth verse: His saying: "Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth glorifies Allah."
