تَأْوِيلٌinterpretationبِمَعْنَىٰmeaning::عَاقِبَةٌconsequenceالشَّيْءَthing،,وَهَذَاand thisإنْifوَرَدَcameفِيinطَلَبٍrequest؛;فَتَأْوِيلُهُits interpretationفِعْلِهِdoing itإنْifكَانَwasأَمْرًاa commandوَتَرْكَهُand leaving itإنْifكَانَwasنَهْيًاa prohibition،,وَإنْand ifوَرَدَcameفِيinخَبَرٍnarration؛;فَتَأْوِيلُهُits interpretationوَقُوعِهِits occurrence
Interpretation means the consequence of a thing, and this is if it comes in a request; its interpretation is doing it if it is a command and leaving it if it is a prohibition, and if it comes in a narration; its interpretation is its occurrence.
مَثَالُهُan example of itفِيinالْخَبَرِthe narrationقَوْلِهِhis sayingتَعَالَىthe Most High::هَلْdoيَنْتَظِرُونَthey waitإِلَّاexceptتَأْوِيلَهُits interpretationيَوْمَthe dayيَأْتِيit comesتَأْوِيلُهُits interpretationيَقُولُhe saysالَّذِينَthose whoنَسُوهُforgot itمِنْfromقَبْلُbeforeقَدْindeedجَاءَتْcameرُسُلُmessengersرَبَّنَاour Lordبِالْحَقِّwith the truth
An example in the narration is His saying, the Most High: "Do they wait except for its interpretation on the day it comes?" Those who forgot it before will say: "Indeed the messengers of our Lord have come with the truth."
فَالْمَعْنَىSo the meaning::مَاwhatيَنْتَظِرُthey waitهَؤُلَاءِtheseإِلَّاexceptعَاقِبَةًthe consequenceوَمَآلًاand the outcomeمَاwhatأُخْبِرُواthey were informedبِهِabout it،,يَوْمَdayيَأْتِيcomesذَلِكَthatالْمُخْبَرَwhat was informedبِهِabout it؛;يَقُولُthey will sayالَّذِينَthose whoنَسُوهُforgotمِنْfromقَبْلَbefore::قَدْindeedجَاءَتْcameرُسُلٌmessengersرَبَّنَاour Lordبِالْحَقِّwith the truth
So the meaning is: What do these wait for except the consequence and outcome of what they were informed about, on the day it comes? Those who forgot it before will say: Indeed the messengers of our Lord have come with the truth.
وَمِنْهُAnd among themقَوْلٌthe sayingيُوسُفَof Josephلَمَّاwhenخَرَّfellلَهُto himأَبَوَاهُhis parentsوَإِخْوَتُهُand his brothersسُجَّدًاin prostration؛;قَالَsaidهَذَاthisتَأْوِيلُis the interpretation ofرُؤْيَايَmy dream؛;لِأَنَّهُbecause heقَالَsaidذَلِكَthatبَعْدَafterأَنْthatسَجَدُواthey prostratedلَهُto him
And an example in the request is the saying of Joseph when his parents and his brothers fell in prostration to him; he said: "This is the interpretation of my dream," because he said that after they prostrated to him.
وَمَثَالُهُAnd an example of itفِيinالطَّلَبِthe requestقَوْلُthe sayingعَائِشَةَAishaرَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَاmay Allah be pleased with her::كَانَwasالنَّبِيُّthe Prophetﷺpeace be upon himيَكْثُرُused to frequentlyأَنْtoيَقُولَsayفِيinرُكُوعِهِhis bowingوَسُجُودِهِand his prostrationبَعْدَafterأَنْزَلَwas revealedعَلَيْهِon himقَوْلُهُhis sayingتَعَالَىthe Most Highإِذَاwhenجَاءَcomesنَصْرُvictoryاللَّهِof Allahوَالْفَتْحُand the conquest؛;يَكْثُرُhe oftenأَنْtoيَقُولَsayفِيinرُكُوعِهِhis bowingوَسُجُودِهِand his prostration::سُبْحَانَكَGlory be to YouاللَّهُمَّO Allahرَبَّنَاour Lordوَبِحَمْدِكَand praise You،,اللَّهُمَّO Allahاغْفِرْforgiveلِيfor me
And an example in the request is the saying of Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her: The Prophet, peace be upon him, used to frequently say in his bowing and prostration after the revelation of His saying, the Most High: "When the victory of Allah comes and the conquest," he often said in his bowing and prostration: "Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and praise You, O Allah, forgive me."
يَتَأَوَّلُinterpretsالْقُرْآنَthe Quran(١)(1)أَيْthat is::يَعْمَلُhe actsبِهِby it..
He interprets the Quran (1). That is: he acts by it.
الْمَعْنَىthe meaningالثَّالِثُthe thirdلِلْتَأْوِيلِfor interpretation::صَرْفٌdiversionالْلَّفْظِof the wordعَنْfromظَاهِرِهِits apparent meaning،,وَهَذَاand thisالنَّوْعُtypeيَنْقَسِمُis dividedإِلَىintoمَحْمُودٍpraiseworthyوَمَذْمُومٍand blameworthy؛;فَإنَّfor ifدَلَّit indicatesعَلَيْهِon itدَّلِيلٍevidence;;فَهُوَit isمَحْمُودٌpraiseworthy،,وَيَكُونُand it isمِنَofالْقِسْمِthe categoryالأَوَّلِthe first،,وَهُوَand it isالتَّفْسِيرُinterpretation،,وَإِنْand ifلَمْnotيَدُلُّit indicatesعَلَيْهِon it(١)(1)رَوَاهُreportedالْبُخَارِيِّAl-Bukhari(٤٩٦٧)(4967)وَand٤٩٦٨)4968),,وَمُسْلِمٍand Muslim(٤٨٤)(484)عَنْfromعَائِشَةَAishaرَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَاmay Allah be pleased with her
The third meaning of interpretation is the diversion of the word from its apparent meaning, and this type is divided into praiseworthy and blameworthy; if it indicates evidence on it, then it is praiseworthy, and it is of the first category, which is interpretation, and if it does not indicate evidence on it (1) reported by Al-Bukhari (4967 and 4968) and Muslim (484) from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her.
