وَAndسَرَّهُمْHe pleased them.

And He pleased them.

وَAndهَذَاthisيُحَقِّقُachievesإِرْثَهُمْtheir inheritance,,وَإِرْثِand the inheritance ofمَنwhoعَدَاهُمْopposed them.

And this achieves their inheritance and the inheritance of those who opposed them.

وَلَاAnd notيَسْتَوِيis equalمَنْhe whoseمَوْرُوثُهُlegacy isالرَّسُولُthe Messengerوَمِنand whoseمَوْرُوثِهِمُlegacy isالْمُنَافِقُونَthe hypocrites.

And not equal is he whose legacy is the Messenger and he whose legacy is the hypocrites.

إِنْIfتُصِبْكَstrikes youحَسَنَةٌgoodness,,تَسُؤْهُمْit displeases them.وَAndإِنْifتُصِبْكَstrikes youمُصِيبَةٌcalamity,,يَقُولُواthey sayقَدْindeedأَخَذْنَاwe have takenأَمْرَنَاour matterمِنْfromقَبْلُbefore.وَيَتَوَلَّوْاAnd they turn awayوَهُمْwhile they areفَرِحُونَrejoicing.

If good strikes you, it displeases them; and if a calamity strikes you, they say, 'Indeed, we have taken our matter before.' And they turn away while they are rejoicing.

قُلْSay:,لَنْNeverيُصِيبَنَاwill strike usإِلَّاexceptمَاwhatكَتَبَhas decreedاللَّهُAllahلَنَاfor us.هُوَHe isمَوْلَانَاour Protector,,وَعَلَىand uponاللَّهِAllahفَلْيَتَوَكَّلِlet relyالْمُؤْمِنُونَthe believers.

Say, 'Never will strike us except what Allah has decreed for us. He is our Protector, and upon Allah let the believers rely.'

وَقَالَAnd He saidتَعَالَىthe Most Highفِيregardingشَأْنِthe matter ofالسَّلَفِينَthe predecessorsالْمُخْتَلِفِينَwho differ,وَandالْحَقُّthe truthلَاdoes notيَنْدَفِعُbe repelled byمُكَابِرَةِthe stubbornness ofأَهْلِthe people ofالزِّيْغِdeviationوَالتَّخْلِيطِand confusion:

And He, the Most High, said regarding the matter of the predecessors who differ, and the truth is not repelled by the stubbornness of the people of deviation and confusion:

إِنْIfتَمْسَسْكُمْtouches youحَسَنَةٌa good thing,,تَسُؤْهُمْit displeases them.وَإِنْAnd ifتُصِبْكُمْstrikes youسَيِّئَةٌan evil thing,,يَفْرَحُواthey rejoiceبِهَاat it.وَإِنْAnd ifتَصْبِرُواyou are patientوَتَتَّقُواand fear Allah,لَاwill notيَضُرُّكُمْharm youكَيْدُهُمْtheir plotشَيْئًاat all.إِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahبِمَاof whatيَعْمَلُونَthey doمُحِيطٌis Encompassing.

If a good thing touches you, it displeases them; and if an evil thing strikes you, they rejoice at it. And if you are patient and fear Allah, their plot will not harm you at all. Indeed, Allah is Encompassing of what they do.

كَرِهَHe dislikedطَاعَاتِهِمْtheir acts of obedienceلِخَبَثِdue to the wickedness ofقُلُوبِهِمْtheir heartsوَفَسَادِand the corruption ofنِيَّاتِهِمْtheir intentions.

He disliked their acts of obedience due to the wickedness of their hearts and the corruption of their intentions.

فَثَبَّطَهُمْSo He held them backعَنْهَاfrom them.وَأَقْعَدَهُمْAnd He seated them.

So He held them back from them and seated them.

وَأَبْغَضَAnd He hatedقُرْبَهُمْtheir nearnessمِنْهُto Himوَجِوَارَهُand His vicinity,لِمَيْلِهِمْdue to their inclinationإِلَىtowardأَعْدَائِهِHis enemies.

And He hated their nearness to Him and His vicinity, due to their inclination toward His enemies.

فَطَرَدَهُمْSo He expelled themعَنْهُfrom His presence.وَأَبْعَدَهُمْAnd He distanced them.

So He expelled them from His presence and distanced them.

وَأَعْرَضُواAnd they turned awayعَنْfromوَحْيِهِHis revelation,فَأَعْرَضَso He turned awayعَنْهُمْfrom them,وَأَشْقَاهُمْand made them wretched,وَمَاand whatأَسْعَدَهُمْwould have made them happy.

And they turned away from His revelation, so He turned away from them and made them wretched, depriving them of what would have made them happy.

وَحَكَمَAnd He judgedعَلَيْهِمْupon themبِحُكْمِwith a judgmentعَدْلٍof justiceلَاhaving noمَطْمَعَhopeلَهُمْfor themفِيinالْفَلَاحِsuccessبَعْدَهُafter it,إِلَّاexceptأَنْthatيَكُونُواthey beمِنْamongالتَّائِبِينَthe repentant.

And He judged upon them with a judgment of justice, leaving them no hope of success after it, except that they become among the repentant.

فَقَالَSo He saidتَعَالَىthe Most HighوَلَوْAnd ifأَرَادُواthey had intendedالْخُرُوجَto go out,لَأَعَدُّواthey would have preparedلَهُfor itعُدَّةًprovisions.وَلَكِنْButكَرِهَHe dislikedانْبِعَاثَهُمْtheir mobilization,فَثَبَّطَهُمْso He held them backوَقِيلَand it was said,اقْعُدُوا"Sitمَعَwithالْقَاعِدِينَthose who stay behind."

So He, the Most High, said: 'And if they had intended to go out, they would have prepared for it provisions. But He disliked their mobilization, so He held them back, and it was said, "Sit with those who stay behind."

ثُمَّThenذَكَرَHe mentionedحِكْمَتَهُHis wisdomفِيinتَثْبِيطِهِمْholding them backوَإِقْعَادِهِمْand making them sit,وَطَرْدِهِمْand expelling themعَنْfromبَابِهِHis doorوَإِبْعَادِهِمْand distancing them,وَأَنَّand thatذَلِكَthatمِنْis fromلُطْفِهِHis kindnessبِأَوْلِيَائِهِto His alliesوَإِسْعَادِهِمْand their happiness.:,فَقَالَSo He saidوَهُوَwhile He isأَحْكَمُthe Most Wiseالْحَاكِمِينَof the judges:

Then He mentioned His wisdom in holding them back, making them sit, expelling them from His door, and distancing them, and that that is from His kindness to His allies and their happiness. So He said, while He is the Most Wise of the judges:
