وَمِنْAndعُقُوبَاتِهَاits punishments::أَنَّهَاthat itتُضْعِفُweakensسَيْرَthe journey ofالْقَلْبِthe heartإِلَىtoاللَّهِGodوَالدَّارِand the abodeالْآخِرَةِof the Hereafter،,أوorتُعَوِّقُهُhinders it،,أوorتُوَقِفُهُstops it,,وَتَقْطَعُهُand cuts itعَنْoff fromالسَّيْرِthe journey,,فَلَاso it does notتَدَعُهُlet itيَخْطُوstepإِلَىtoاللَّهِGodخُطْوَةًa step.
And among its punishments is that it weakens the heart's journey to God and the Hereafter, or hinders it, or stops it and cuts it off from the journey, so it does not let it take a step towards God.
هَذَاThisإِنifلَمnotتُرَدِّهُturn it backعَنْfromوَجْهَتِهِits directionإِلَىtoوَرَائِهِbehind it.
This is if it does not turn it back from its direction to behind it.
فَالذَّنْبُFor the sinيَحْجُبُhidesالْوَاصِلَthe one who reaches,,وَيَقْطَعُand cutsالسَّائِرَthe one who journeys,,وَيُنَكِّسُand turns downالطَّالِبَthe seeker.
For sin hides the one who reaches, cuts off the one who journeys, and turns down the seeker.
وَالْقَلْبُAnd the heartإِنَّمَاonlyيَسِيرُmovesإِلَىtoاللَّهِGodبِقُوَّتِهِwith its strength,,فَإِذَاso ifمَرِضَit becomes sickبِالذُّنُوبِwith sinsضَعُفَتْit weakensتِلْكَthatالْقُوَّةُstrengthالَّتِيthat whichتُسَيِّرُهَاdrives it.فَإِنIfزَالَتْit disappearsبِالْكُلِّيَّةِcompletelyانْقَطَعَتْit is cut offعَنْfromاللَّهِGodانْقِطَاعًاa separationيُبْعِدُthat distancesتَدَارُكَits recovery.وَاللَّهُAnd Godالْمُسْتَعَانُis the one sought for help.
And the heart only moves to God with its strength, so if it becomes sick with sins, that strength weakens. If it disappears completely, it is cut off from God in a way that distances its recovery, and God is the one sought for help.
فَالذَّنْبُThe sinإِمَّاeitherأَنْthatيُمِيتَkillsالْقَلْبَthe heart,,أوorيُرْضِيَmakes it sickمَرَضًاa diseaseمَخُوفًاfearful.أوOrيُضْعِفَweakensقُوَّتَهُits strength.وَلَاAnd it mustبِدٌthere is no escape,,حَتَّىuntilيَنْتَهِيَit endsضَعْفُهُits weaknessإِلَىtoالْأَشْيَاءِthe eight affairsالثَّمَانِيَةِthe eightالَّتِيthatاسْتَعَاذَthe Prophet sought refugeمِنْهَاfrom themالنَّبِيُّthe Prophetوَهِيَand they are:
The sin either kills the heart, or makes it sick with a fearful disease, or weakens its strength. And there must be no escape until its weakness ends in the eight affairs from which the Prophet sought refuge, and they are:
[[١1//٣٥35]]الْهَمُّworryوَالْحَزَنُand sorrow,,وَالْعَجْزُand inabilityوَالْكَسَلُand laziness,,وَالْجُبُنُand cowardice,,وَالْبَخْلُand stinginess,,وَضَلَّعُand being oppressedالدَّيْنُof debtsوَغَلَبَةُand overwhelmingالرِّجَالِof men.(٣)(3)
Worry and sorrow, inability and laziness, cowardice, stinginess, being oppressed by debts, and being overwhelmed by men.
وَكُلُّAnd eachاثْنَيْنِtwoمِنْهَاof themقَرِينَانِare companions.فَالْهَمُّFor worryوَالْحَزَنُand sorrow،,قَرِينَانِare companions,فَإِنَّfor ifالْمَكْرُوهَthe disliked mattersالْوَارِدَةُthat comeعَلَىtoالْقَلْبِthe heartإِنifكَانَit wasمِنْofأَمْرٍa matterمُسْتَقْبَلٍfutureيُتَوَقَّعُexpectedأَحْدَثَit causesالْهَمَّworry.وَإِنAnd ifكَانَit wasمِنْofأَمْرٍthe matterمَاضٍpastقَدْalreadyوَقَعَhappenedأَحْدَثَit causesالْحَزَنَsorrow.
And each of them are companions. For worry and sorrow are companions, for if the disliked matters that come to the heart are from a future matter that is expected, it causes worry, and if it is from a past matter that has already happened, it causes sorrow.
الْمَسِيحُThe Messiahعَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلامُpeaceأَنَّهُthat heقَالَsaid:يَاOمَعْشَرَgathering ofالْحَوَارِيِّينَthe disciples.أَنتُمْYouتَخَافُونَfearالْمَعَاصِيَthe sinsوَأَنَاand Iأَخَافُfearالْكُفْرَdisbelief.
The Messiah, peace be upon him, said: 'O gathering of the disciples, you fear sins, and I fear disbelief.'
وَذَكَرَAnd he mentionedعَنْfromسَهْلٍSahlالتُّسْتَرِيِّat-Tustariأَنَّهُthat heقَالَ:said:«الْمُرِيدُ'the seekerيَخَافُfearsأَنْthatيُبْتَلَىhe might be testedبِالْمَعَاصِيwith sins,وَالْعارِفُand the knowerيَخَافُfearsأَنْthatيُبْتَلَىhe might be testedبِالْكُفْرِwith disbelief.وَانْظُرْAnd seeطَرِيقَthe pathالهِجْرَتَيْنِof the two migrations.
And he mentioned from Sahl at-Tustari that he said: 'The seeker fears that he might be tested with sins, while the knower fears that he might be tested with disbelief. And see the path of the two migrations.
