In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.

مُقَدِّمَةٌIntroductionالتَّحْقِيقِof the investigation

Introduction to the Investigation.

اَلْحَمْدُAll praiseلِلَّهِbe to Allahرَبِّthe Lordالْعَالَمِينَof the worldsوَالصَّلَاةُand peaceوَالسَّلاَمُand blessingsعَلَىuponرَسُولِهِHis Messengerنَبِيِّنَاour ProphetمُحَمَّدٍMuhammadوَعَلَىand uponآلِهِhis familyوَصَحْبِهِand his companionsأَجْمَعِينَall together.

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger, our Prophet Muhammad and upon his family and companions all together.

أَمَّاAs forبَعْدَafterفَإِنَّthatهَذَاthisالْكِتَابَbookالَّذِيwhichاشْتَهَرَhas become famousبِعُنْوَانِunder the title«الْجَوَابَ"The Sufficient Answerالْكَافِيthe sufficientلِمَنfor whoeverسَأَلَaskedعَنْaboutالدَّوَاءِthe remedyالشَّافِي»the healing."

As for what follows, this book, which has become famous under the title 'The Sufficient Answer for Those Who Inquire About the Healing Remedy,'...

وَطُبِعَand was printedمَرَّاتٍseveral timesبِاسْمِunder the name«الدَّاءِ"The Diseaseوَالدَّوَاءِ»،and the Remedy,"

...and was printed several times under the name 'The Disease and the Remedy,'...

مِنْone ofأَنْفَعِthe most usefulالْكُتُبِbooksفِيinتَهْذِيبِrefinementالنُّفُوسِ،of souls,وَاسْتِثَارَتِهَاand arousing themلِلْكُفِّto restrainعَنْfromالْمَعَاصِيsinsوَالتَّوْبَةِand repentanceالنَّصُوحِ.the sincere.

...one of the most useful books in refining souls and arousing them to restrain from sins and sincere repentance.

وَقَدْAnd it hasأُفْرِدَbeen dedicatedلِمُعَالَجَةِto addressingمَرَضٍthe diseaseمِنْofأَخْطَرِthe most dangerousأَمْرَاضِdiseasesالْقُلُوبِ،of the hearts,«مُخَالِفٍin oppositionلِسَائِرِto all otherالأَمْرَاضِdiseasesفِيinذَاتِهِits essenceوَأَسْبَابِهِand its causesوَعِلَاجِهِand its treatment.

...it has been dedicated to addressing one of the most dangerous diseases of the hearts, which is in opposition to all other diseases in its essence, causes, and treatment.

وَإِذَاAnd ifتَمَكَّنَit becomes entrenchedوَاسْتَحْكَمَand strongly establishedعَزَّit becomes hardعَلَىforالأَطِبَّاءِthe doctorsدَوَاؤُهُ،to find its remedy,وَأَعْيَاand it exhaustsالعَلِيلَthe patientدَاؤُهُits diseaseوَهُوَand it isمَرَضٌthe diseaseالْعَشَقِof lust.الَّذِيThe oneقَالَthat saidفِيin itالشَّاعِرُ :the poet:

...and if it becomes entrenched and strongly established, it becomes hard for the doctors to find its remedy, and it exhausts the patient with its disease, and it is the disease of lust which the poet said in...

الْحُبُّLoveدَاءٌis a diseaseعُضَالٌchronicلَاthat has noدَوَاءٌremedyلَهُfor it.يَحَارُThe doctors are perplexedفِيهِin itالأَطِبَّاءُthe physiciansالنَّحَارَىof the experts.

"Love is a chronic disease that has no remedy for it; the doctors are perplexed in it."

قَدْI mayكُنتُhave thoughtأَحْسَبُthatأَنَّtheالْعَاشِقِينَloversغَلَواhave exaggeratedفِيinوَصْفِهِdescribing itفَإِذَاso whenبِالْقَوْمِthe peopleتَقْصِيرٌhave fallen short.

I may have thought that the lovers have exaggerated in describing it, but then I found that the people have fallen short.

وَمُؤَلِّفُهُAnd its authorرَحِمَهُmay Allah have mercy on himاللَّهُAllahمِنْofأَطِبَّاءِthe doctorsالْقُلُوبِof the heartsالْبَارِعِينَthe skilledالَّذِينَwhoلَاdo notيَرْجِعُونَreferفِيinمُدَوَاتِهِمtheir treatmentsلِأَمْرَاضِto the ailmentsالْقُلُوبِof the heartsإِلَىtoحُكَمَاءِthe wise menالْيُونَانِof Greeceوَإِنَّمَاbut ratherيَصْدُرُونَthey derive their knowledgeعَنْfromكِتَابِthe Bookاللَّهِof Allahالْحَكِيمِ،the Wise,

And its author, may Allah have mercy on him, is one of the skilled doctors of the hearts who do not refer their treatments for the diseases of the hearts to the wise men of Greece, but rather they derive their knowledge from the Book of Allah, the Wise.

الَّذِيwhichفِيهِin itهُدًىguidanceوَمَوْعِظَةًand admonitionوَشِفَاءًand healingلِمَاfor whatفِيis inالصُّدُورِ،the chests,

...which contains guidance, admonition, and healing for what is in the chests.

وَسُنَّةَAnd the Sunnahرَسُولِof the Messengerاللَّهِof Allahالَّذِيwhoإِنَّمَاwas onlyبُعِثَsentلِتَعْلِيمِto teachالنَّاسِthe peopleالْكِتَابَthe Bookوَالْحِكْمَةَ،and wisdom,وَإِصْلاحِand to reformعَقِيدَتِهِمtheir creedوَسُلُوكِهِمand their conductوَتَزْكِيَةِand to purifyنُفُوسِهِم،their souls,

And the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah who was sent only to teach the people the Book and wisdom, and to reform their creed and conduct, and to purify their souls,

وَهَدَايَتِهِمand guide themلِمَرَاشِدِto the rightالأُمُورِ؛matters;

and guide them to the right matters.

فَكَانَتْThus, it wasالْجَمَاعَةُthe communityالَّتِيthatتَخَرَّجَتْgraduatedعَلَىunderيَدَيْهِhis handsخَيْرَthe bestأُمَّةٍnationأُخْرِجَتْbroughtلِلْنَّاسِ،forth for mankind,لَمْ يُعْرَفْit has not been knownفِيinالتَّارِيخِhistoryالْبَشَرِيِّhumanلَهَاfor itنَظِيرٌan equal.

Thus, it was the community that graduated under his hands, the best nation brought forth for mankind; it has not been known an equal for it in human history.
