مِنَFromالْمَخْلُوقَاتِthe created beingsهُوَisمِنَfromمَرَضٍdiseaseفِيكَin youكَمَرَضٍlike a diseaseالشِّرْكِof polytheismوَالذُّنُوبِand sins
From the created beings, there is a disease in you like the disease of polytheism and sins.
وَأَصْلُAnd the essenceصَلَاحٍof the righteousnessالْقَلْبِof the heartهُوَisحَيَاتُهُits lifeوَاسْتِنَارَتُهُand its enlightenmentقَالَHe saidتَعَالَىthe Exaltedالْأَنْعَامِthe Cattle
And the essence of the righteousness of the heart is its life and its enlightenment; He, the Exalted, said in Al-An'am.
أَوْOrمَنْwhoكَانَwasمَيْتًاdeadفَأَحْيَيْنَاهُthen We gave him lifeوَجَعَلْنَاand We madeلَهُfor himنُورًاa lightيَمْشِيto walkبِهِwith itفِيinالنَّاسِthe peopleكَمَنْlike oneمِثْلِهِsimilar to himفِيinالظُّلُمَاتِthe darknessesلَيْسَnotبِخَارِجٍoutsideمِنْهَاof it
Or who was dead, then We gave him life and made for him a light with which he walks among the people, like one in darkness that is not outside it.
لِذَٰلِكَFor this reasonذَكَرَHe mentionedاللَّٰهَAllahحَيَاةَthe lifeالْقُلُوبِof the heartsوَنُورَهَاand their lightوَمَوْتَهَاand their deathوَظُلْمَتَهَاand their darkness
For this reason, Allah mentioned the life of the hearts and their light, and their death and their darkness.
فِيInغَيْرِother thanمَوْضِعٍplacesكَقَوْلِهِlike His sayingيَـٰسٓYa-Sinلِيُنذِرَto warnمَنْwhomكَانَwasحَيًّاaliveوَيُحِقُّand to affirmالْقَوْلَthe wordعَلَىonالْكَافِرِينَthe disbelievers
In other places, like His saying in Ya-Sin, to warn whom was alive and to affirm the word on the disbelievers.
وَAndقَوْلُهُHis sayingتَعَالَىthe Exaltedالْأَنْفَالِthe Spoils of WarيَاOأَيُّهَاyou whoالَّذِينَbelieveآمِنُواbelieveاسْتَجِيبُواrespondلِلَّهِto Allahوَلِلرَّسُولِand to the Messengerإِذَاwhenدَعَاكُمْhe calls youلِمَاfor whatيُحْيِيكُمْgives you life
And His saying the Exalted in Al-Anfal, O you who believe, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to what gives you life.
ثُمَّThenقَالَHe saidوَاعْلَمُواAnd knowأَنَّthatاللَّٰهَAllahيَحُولُrestrictsبَيْنَbetweenالْمَرْءِa personوَandقَلْبِهِhis heartوَandأَنَّهُthat heإِلَيْهِto Himتُحْشَرُونَyou will be gathered
Then He said, 'And know that Allah restricts between a person and his heart, and that you will be gathered to Him.'
وَقَالَAnd He saidتَعَالَىthe Exaltedالرُّومِthe RomansيُخْرِجُHe brings outالْحَيِّthe livingمِنَfromالْمَيِّتِthe deadوَيُخْرِجُand brings outالْمَيِّتَthe deadمِنَfromالْحَيِّthe living
And He said the Exalted in Ar-Rum, 'He brings out the living from the dead and brings out the dead from the living.'
وَمِنْAnd amongأَنْوَاعِهِits typesأَنْis thatيُخْرِجَHe brings outالْمُؤْمِنَthe believerمِنَfromالْكَافِرِthe disbelieverوَالْكَافِرُand the disbelieverمِنَfromالْمُؤْمِنِthe believer
And among its types is that He brings out the believer from the disbeliever and the disbeliever from the believer.
وَفِيAnd inالْحَدِيثِthe authentic narrationالصَّحِيحِthe soundمِثْلَlikeالْبَيْتِthe houseيُذْكَرُthat is mentionedاللَّٰهُAllahفِيهِin itوَandالْبَيْتِthe houseالَّذِيwhichلَاdoes notيُذْكَرُrememberاللَّٰهُAllahفِيهِin itكَمثَلِis likeالْحَيِّthe livingوَالْمَيِّتِand the dead
And in the authentic narration, 'Like the house that Allah is remembered in and the house that Allah is not remembered in, is like the living and the dead.'
وَفِيAnd inالصَّحِيحِthe sound narrationأَيْضًاalsoاجْعَلُواmakeمِنْfromصَلَاتِكُمْyour prayersفِيinبُيُوتِكُمْyour homesوَلَاand do notتَتَّخِذُوهَاtake themقُبُورًاas graves
And in the sound narration, 'Also make from your prayers in your homes and do not take them as graves.'
وَقَدْAnd indeedقَالَHe saidتَعَالَىthe Exaltedالْأَنْعَامِthe CattleوَالَّذِينَAnd those whoكَذَّبُواdisbelievedبِآيَاتِنَاin Our versesصُمٌّare deafوَبُكْمٌand dumbفِيinالظُّلُمَاتِthe darknesses
And indeed, the Exalted said in Al-An'am, 'And those who disbelieved in Our verses are deaf and dumb in the darknesses.'
وَذَكَرَAnd He mentionedسُبْحَانَهُHis Gloryآيَةَthe verseالنُّورِof lightوَآيَةًand the verseالظُّلُمَةِof darkness
And He mentioned, His Glory, the verse of light and the verse of darkness.
فَقَالَHe saidالنُّورُthe LightاللَّٰهُAllahنُورُthe Lightالسَّمَاوَاتِof the heavensوَالْأَرْضِand the earthمَثَلُThe exampleنُورِهِof His Lightكَمِشْكَاةٍis like a nicheفِيهَاin itمِصْبَاحٌa lampالْمِصْبَاحُthe lampفِيinزُجَاجَةٍa glassالزُّجَاجَةُthe glassكَأَنَّهَاis as if it isكَوْكَبٌa starدُرِّيٌّbrilliant
He said, 'The Light of Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His Light is like a niche in which there is a lamp, the lamp is in a glass, the glass is like a brilliant star.
يُوقَدُIt is litمِنْfromشَجَرَةٍa treeمُبَارَكَةٍblessedزَيْتُونَةٍoliveلَاnotشَرْقِيَّةٍeasternوَلَاnorغَرْبِيَّةٍwesternيَكَادُit almostزَيْتُهَاits oilيُضِيءُlightوَلَوْeven ifلَمْit is notتَمَسَّهُtouched byنَارٌfire
It is lit from a blessed olive tree, which is neither eastern nor western. Its oil almost lights, even if it is not touched by fire.
نُورٌLightعَلَىuponنُورٍlightفَهَذَاSo thisمَثَلٌis an exampleنُورِof lightالْإِيمَانِof faithفِيinقُلُوبِthe heartsالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the believers
Light upon light; so this is an example of the light of faith in the hearts of the believers.
ثُمَّThenقَالَHe saidالنُّورُthe Lightوَالَّذِينَand those whoكَفَرُواdisbelievedأَعْمَالُهُمْtheir deedsكَسَرَابٍis like a mirageبَقِيْعَةٍin a flat landيَحْسَبُهُhe thinks it isالظَّمْآنُthe thirstyمَاءًwater
Then He said, 'The Light and those who disbelieve, their deeds are like a mirage in a flat land; the thirsty thinks it is water.
حَتَّىUntilإِذَاwhenجَاءَهُhe comes to itلَمْnotيَجِدْfindشَيْئًاanythingوَوَجَدَand findsاللَّٰهَAllahعِندَهُwith himفَوَفَّاهُand he gives himحِسَابَهُhis accounting
Until when he comes to it, he finds nothing; and he finds Allah with him and He gives him his accounting.
وَاللَّٰهُAnd Allahسَرِيعُis swiftالْحِسَابِthe account
And Allah is swift in taking account.
أَوْOrكَظُلُمَاتٍLike darknessesفِيinبَحْرٍa seaلُّجِّيٍّdeepيَغْشَاهُcovers itمَوْجٌa waveمِنْfromفَوْقِهِabove itمَوْجٌa waveمِنْfromفَوْقِهِabove itسَحَابٌclouds
Or like darknesses in a deep sea, there covers it a wave from above it, and above it another wave and clouds.
ظُلُمَاتٌDarknessesبَعْضُهَاSome of themفَوْقَaboveبَعْضٍsomeإِذَاIfأَخْرَجَhe stretches outيَدَهُhis handلَمْhe cannotيَكَادَalmostيَرَاهَاsee it.
Darknesses, some of them above others; if he stretches out his hand, he can hardly see it.
وَمَنAnd whoeverلَمْdoes notيَجْعَلْmakeاللَّٰهُAllahلَهُfor himنُورًاa lightفَمَاthen whatلَهُhe hasمِنْofنُورٍlight
And whoever does not make for him Allah a light, then he has no light.
فَالْأَوَّلُSo the firstمَثَلٌexampleالْعَقَائِدِof beliefsالْمُفْسِدَةِcorruptedوَالْأَعْمَالِand the deedsالتَّابِعَةِthat followلَهَاthem
So the first is an example of corrupted beliefs and the deeds that follow them.
يَحْسَبُهَاHe thinks it isصَاحِبَهَاits companionشَيْئًاsomethingيَنْفَعُهُbenefit him
He thinks it is something that benefits him.
فَإِذَاBut whenجَاءَتْهَاit comes to himلَمْnotيَجِدْهَاfind itشَيْئًاanythingيَنْفَعُهُbeneficial for him
But when it comes to him, he does not find anything beneficial for him.
وَوَفَّاهُAnd He will give himاللَّٰهُAllahحِسَابَهُhis accountعَلَىforتِلْكَthoseالأَعْمَالِdeeds
And Allah will give him his accounting for those deeds.
وَالثَّانِيAnd the secondمَثَلٌis an exampleلِلْجَهْلِof ignoranceالْبَسِيطِthe simpleوَعَدَمِand the lackالإِيْمَانِof faithوَالْعِلْمِand knowledge
And the second is an example of simple ignorance and the lack of faith and knowledge.
فَإِنْIfكَانَتْisصَاحِبَتُهَاits companionفِيis inظُلُمَاتٍdarknessesبَعْضُهَاsome of themفَوْقَaboveبَعْضٍothersلَاdoes notيُبْصِرُseeشَيْئًاanything.
If its companion is in darknesses above one another, he does not see anything.
فَإِنَّThenالْبَصَرَthe sightإِنَّمَاis onlyبِالنُّورِby the lightالإِيْمَانِof faithوَالْعِلْمِand knowledge
Then the sight is only by the light of faith and knowledge.
قَالَHe saidتَعَالَىthe Exaltedالْأَعْرَافِthe HeightsإِنَّIndeedالَّذِينَthose whoاتَّقَوْاfearإِذَاwhenمَسَّهُمa touch comes to themطَائِفٌof the devilمِنَfromالشَّيْطَانِthe devilتَذَكَّرُواthey rememberفَإِذَاthen whenهُمْtheyمُبْصِرُونَare made to see.
He said the Exalted in Al-A'raf, 'Indeed, those who fear, when a touch comes to them from the devil, they remember, then when they are made to see.'
وَقَالَAnd He saidتَعَالَىthe ExaltedيُوسُفَYusufوَلَقَدْAnd indeedهَمَّتْshe desiredبِهِhimوَهَمَّand he desiredبِهَاherلَوْلَاif notأَنْthatرَءَاhe sawبُرْهَانَa proofرَبِّهِfrom his Lord
And He said the Exalted in the case of Yusuf, 'And indeed she desired him, and he desired her, if not that he had seen a proof from his Lord.
وَهُوَAnd he isبُرْهَانٌthe proofالْإِيمَانِof faithالَّذِيwhichحَصَلَwas establishedفِيinقَلْبِهِhis heartفَصَرَفَso He turned awayاللَّٰهُAllahبِهِwith itمَاwhatكَانَhe wasمُهْمِلًَاinclinedبِهِto it.
And he is the proof of the faith that was established in his heart; so Allah turned him away from what he was inclined to.
وَكَتَبَAnd He wroteلَهُfor himحَسَنَةًa good deedكَامِلَةًcompleteوَلَمْand did notيَكْتُبْrecordعَلَيْهِagainst himخَطِيئَةًa sinإِذْwhenفَعَلَhe didخَيْرًاa good deed.
And He wrote for him a complete good deed, and did not record against him a sin when he did a good deed.
