قَلْبُهُHis heartمُعَلَّقٌis attachedبِالْمَسْجِدِto the mosqueإِذَاIfخَرَجَhe leavesمِنْهُfrom itحَتَّىuntilيَرْجِعَhe returnsإِلَيْهِto it

His heart is attached to the mosque; if he leaves it, he will wait until he returns to it.

وَرَجُلَانِAnd two menتَحَابَّاloved each otherفِيinاللَّهِGodوَاجْتَمَعَاand they metوَتَفَرَّقَاand separatedعَلَيْهِfor His sake

And two men loved each other for God's sake; they met and then separated for His sake.

وَرَجُلٌAnd a manتَصَدَّقَgave charityبِصَدَقَةٍin charityفَاخْفَاهَاand hid itحَتَّىuntilلَا تَعْلَمُhis left hand does not knowشِمَالُهُwhat his right hand spentمَاwhatأَنْفَقَتْhe has spentيَمِينُهُhis right hand

And a man gave charity and hid it until his left hand did not know what his right hand spent.

وَرَجُلٌAnd a manذَكَرَrememberedاللَّهَGodخَالِيًاin solitudeفَفَاضَتْand his eyes overflowedعَيْنَاهُwith tears.

And a man remembered God in solitude, and his eyes overflowed with tears.

وَرَجُلٌAnd a manدَعَتْهُwas called byامْرَأَةٌa womanذَاتُofنَسَبٍnoble lineageوَجَمَالٍand beauty.فَقَالَHe said,إِنِّيIndeed, IأَخَافُfearاللَّهَGodرَبَّLordالْعَالَمِينَof the worlds.

And a man was called by a woman of noble lineage and beauty; he said, 'Indeed, I fear God, the Lord of the worlds.'

وَأَصْلُAnd the rootالْمَحَبَّةِof loveهُوَisمَعْرِفَةُthe knowledge ofاللَّهِGodسُبْحَانَهُGlory be to Himوَتَعَالَىand Exalted is He.

And the root of love is the knowledge of God, Glory be to Him and Exalted is He.

وَلَهَاAnd it hasأَصْلَانِtwo foundations.أَحَدُهُمَاOne of themوَهُوَisالَّذِيthat whichيُقَالُis saidلَهُto beمَحَبَّةٌthe loveالْعَامَّةِof the common peopleلِأَجْلِfor the sake ofإِحْسَانِهِHis goodnessإِلَىtoعِبَادِهِHis servants.

And it has two foundations. One of them is that which is said to be the love of the common people for the sake of His goodness to His servants.

وَهَذِهِAnd thisالْمَحَبَّةُloveعَلَىis based onهَذَاthisالْأَصْلُfoundationلَاnoيُنْكِرُهَاone denies it.أَحَدٌFor indeed, no oneفَإِنَّdenies it; forالْقُلُوبُheartsمَجْبُولَةٌare createdعَلَىto loveحُبِّthe loveمَنْof the one whoأَحْسَنَhas done goodإِلَيْهَاto themوَبَغْضِand to hateمَنْthe one whoأَسَاءَhas wronged.إِلَيْهَاto them.

And this love is based on this foundation; no one denies it, for hearts are created to love the one who has done good to them and to hate the one who has wronged them.

وَاللَّهُAnd GodسُبْحَانَهُGlory be to Himهُوَisالْمُنْعِمُthe benefactorالْمُحْسِنُthe doer of goodإِلَىtoعَبْدِهِHis servantبِالْحَقِيقَةِin reality.فَإِنَّهُIndeed, Heالْمُتَفَضِّلُis the bestowerبِجَمِيعِof allالنِّعَمِblessings.وَإِنْAnd ifجَرَتْthey cameبِوَاسِطَةٍby means ofإِذْforهُوَHe isمُيَسِّرُthe facilitatorالْوَسَائِطِof means.

And God, Glory be to Him, is the benefactor to His servant in reality. Indeed, He is the bestower of all blessings, even if they come by means of others.

وَسَبَبُAnd the reasonالْأَسْبَابِfor causesلَكِنbutهَذِهِthisالْمَحَبَّةُloveإِذَاifلَمْdoes notتَجْذِبْattractالْقَلْبَthe heartإِلَىtoمَحَبَّةِthe loveاللَّهِof Godنَفْسِهِitself,فَمَاthen whatأُحِبُّis lovedالْعَبْدُby the servantفِيinالْحَقِيقَةِtruthإِلَّاexceptنَفْسَهُhis own self.

And the reason for causes, but this love, if it does not attract the heart to the love of God Himself, then what the servant loves in truth is nothing but himself.

وَهَذَاAnd thisلَيْسَis notبِمَذْمُومٍblameworthyبَلْratherمَحْمُودٌpraiseworthy.وَهَذِهِAnd thisالْمَحَبَّةُloveهِيَisالمُشَارُthe referenceإِلَيْهَاto itبِقَوْلِهِwith His sayingأحِبُّوا‘LoveاللَّهَGodلِمَاfor whatيُغْذِيكُمHe nourishes you withبِهِof it,مِنْfromنِعَمِهِHis blessings.

And this love is referred to in His saying, 'Love God for what He nourishes you with of His blessings.'

وَأَحِبُّونِيAnd love Meلِحُبِّfor the loveاللَّهِof Godوَأَحِبُّواand loveأَهْلِيMy familyلِحُبِّيfor My love.

And love Me for the love of God and love My family for My love.

وَالْمُتَقَصِّرُAnd the one who falls shortعَلَىinهَذِهِthisهُوَisلَمْnotيَعْرِفْknowمِنْfromجِهَةِthe side ofاللَّهِGodمَاwhatيَسْتَوْجِبُit deservesأَنَّهُthat itيُحِبُّهُloves itإِلَّاexceptلِلْإِحْسَانِfor the goodnessإِلَيْهِto it.

And the one who falls short in this does not know from the side of God what it deserves that He loves it except for the goodness done to him.

وَهَذَاAnd thisكَمَاasقَالُواthey said,إِنَّIndeed,الْحَمْدُthe praiseلِلَّهِis for Godعَلَىforنَوْعَيْنِtwo types.حَمْدٌPraiseهُوَisشُكْرٌthankfulnessوَذَلِكَand thatلَاis notيَكُونُto beإِلَّاexceptعَلَىforنِعْمَتِهِHis blessings.وَحَمْدٌAnd praiseهُوَisثَنَاءٌglorificationعَلَيْهupon Him.وَمَحَبَّةٌAnd loveلَهُfor Him.وَهُوَAnd it isبِمَاwith whatيَسْتَحِقُّهُis deserved by Him.لِنَفْسِهِfor Himself.سُبْحَانَهُGlory be to Him.

And this as they said, 'Indeed, the praise is for God in two types. Praise is thankfulness and that is not to be except for His blessings. And praise is glorification upon Him, and love for Him, and it is with what is deserved by Him for Himself, Glory be to Him.'

فَكَذَٰلِكَThusالْحُبُّthe loveفَإِنَّindeedالْأَصْلُthe rootالثَّانِيsecondهُوَisمَحَبَّتُهُHis loveلِمَاfor whatهُوَHe isأَهْلٌworthy of.وَهَذَاAnd thisحُبٌّis loveمِنْfromعَرَفَthe one who knowsمِنْfromاللَّهِGodمَاwhatيَسْتَحِقُis worthy ofأَنْto be lovedيُحِبُّهُfor them.لِأَجْلِهِfor His sake.

Thus, the love; indeed, the second root is His love for what He is worthy of.

وَمَاAnd whatمِنْfromوَجْهٍthe aspectمِنْofالْوُجُوهِthe facesالَّتِيthatيَعْرِفُone knowsاللَّهَGodبِهَاby itمِمَّاfrom whatدَلَّتْindicatedعَلَيْهِupon HimأَسْمَاؤُهُHis namesوَصِفَاتُهُand attributesإِلَّاexceptوَهُوَHe isيَسْتَحِقُworthy ofالْمُحَبَّةِthe complete love.

And what from the aspects that one knows God by, from what indicated upon Him His names and attributes, except He is worthy of complete love.

حَتَّىUntilجَمِيعَallمَفْعُولَاتِهِof His actionsإِذْforكُلِّeveryنِعْمَةٍblessingمِنْهُfrom Himفَضْلٌis a favorوَكُلِّand everyنِقْمَةٍafflictionمِنْهُfrom Himعَدْلٌis justice.

Until all of His actions are such that every blessing from Him is a favor and every affliction from Him is justice.

وَلِهَذَاAnd thereforeاسْتَحَقَّHe deservesأَنْthatيَكُونَbeمَحْمُودًاpraisedفِيin everyكُلِّcase.وَيَسْتَحِقُAnd He deservesأَنْto beيُحْمَدَpraisedعَلَىforالسَّرَّاءِthe good thingsوَالضَّرَّاءِand the hardships.

And therefore, He deserves to be praised in every case. And He deserves to be praised for the good things and the hardships.

وَهَذَاAnd thisأَعْلَىis the highestوَأَكْمَلُand most complete.وَهَذَاAnd thisحُبٌّloveالْخَاصَّةُof the elite.وَهَؤُلَاءAnd theseهُمْareالَّذِينَthose whoيَطْلُبُونَseekلَذَّةَthe pleasureالنَّظَرِof lookingإِلَىtoوَجْهِهِHis faceالْكَرِيمِnoble.

And this is the highest and most complete love; and these are those who seek the pleasure of looking to His noble face.

وَيَتَلَذَّذُونَand they delightبِذِكْرِهِin His remembranceوَمُنَاجَاتِهِand in conversing with Him.وَيَكُونُAnd this isذَلِكَthatلَهُمْfor themأَعْظَمُgreaterمِنَthanالْمَاءِwaterلِلسَّمَكَfor fish.

And they delight in His remembrance and in conversing with Him, and this is greater for them than water is for fish.

لَوْIfانْقَطَعُواthey were cut offعَنْfromذَٰلِكَthatلَوَجَدُواthey would findمِنَfromالْأَلَمِthe painمَا لَاthat whichيُطِيقُونَthey can bear.

If they were cut off from that, they would find from the pain that which they cannot bear.

وَهُمْAnd theyالسَّابِقُونَare the foremost.كَمَاAsفِيinصَحِيحٍSahihمُسْلِمٍMuslimعَنْfromأَبِيAbuهُرَيْرَةَHurairaقَالَsaid.مَرَّThe Prophetالنَّبِيُّ(Peace be upon him)صَلَّىpassed byاللَّهُGodعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand peace.بِجَبَلٍby a mountainيُقَالُit is saidلَهُto beجُمَدَانَJemandan.فَقَالَHe said,سِيرُوا‘Move on!هَذَاThisجُمَدَانٌJemandan.سَبَقَhas precededالْمُفْرَدُونَthe singular ones.قَالُواThey said,يَا‘OرَسُولَMessengerاللَّهِof God.مَنْWhoالْمُفْرَدُونَare the singular ones?قَالَHe said,الذَّاكِرُونَ‘The ones who rememberاللَّهَGodكَثِيرًاmuchوَالذَّاكِرَاتُand the women who remember.

And they are the foremost, as in Sahih Muslim from Abu Huraira, who said, 'The Prophet (Peace be upon him) passed by a mountain said to be Jemandan, and he said, 'Move on! This is Jemandan that has preceded the singular ones.' They said, 'O Messenger of God, who are the singular ones?' He said, 'The ones who remember God much and the women who remember.'

وَفِيAnd inرِوَايَةٍanother narrationأُخْرَىit is saidقَالَsaid,المُسْتَهْتِرُونَthe excessive onesبِذِكْرِin the remembranceاللَّهِof Godيَعْلَقُونَwho placeالذِّكْرَthe remembranceعَنْهُمfrom themأَثْقَالَهُمْtheir burdensفَيَأْتُونَand they comeيَوْمَon the Dayالْقِيَامَةِof Resurrectionخَفَافًاlight.وَفِيAnd inحَدِيثٍthe hadithهَارُونَof HarunبْنِbinعَنْتَرَةَAntarahعَنْfromأَبِيهِhis fatherعَنْfromابْنِIbnعَبَّاسٍAbbasرَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith him.عَنْهُمَاand with them.قَالَHe said,قَالَMosesيَاOرَبِّLord.أَيُّWhichعِبَادِكَof Your servantsأَحَبُّdo You loveإِلَيْكَto You?قَالَHe said,الَّذِي‘The one whoيَذْكُرُنِيremembers Meوَلَاand does notيَنْسَانِيforget Me.

And in another narration, it is said that the excessive ones in the remembrance of God place the remembrance from them their burdens, and they come on the Day of Resurrection light. And in the hadith of Harun bin Antarah from his father from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and with them, he said that Moses asked, 'O Lord, which of Your servants do You love to You?' He said, 'The one who remembers Me and does not forget Me.'
