And among them are some who look at you. Are you guiding the blind even though they cannot see?

وَقَالَAnd He saidتَعَالَىthe Most Highالْأَنْعَامُthe Cattle

And He, the Most High, said: the Cattle.

وَمِنْهُمAnd among themمَنْwhoيَسْتَمِعُlistensإِلَيْكُمْto youوَجَعَلْنَاAnd We have placedعَلَىuponقُلُوبِهِمtheir heartsأَكِنَّةًcoversأَنَّthatيَفْقَهُوهَاthey understand itوَفِيand inآذَانِهِمtheir earsوَقْرًاheaviness

And among them are some who listen to you. And We have placed covers upon their hearts so that they do not understand it, and in their ears is heaviness.

وَإِنْAnd ifيَرَوْاthey seeكُلَّeveryآيَةٍsignلَاnotيُؤْمِنُواbelieveبِهَاin itحَتَّىuntilإِذَاwhenجَاءُوكَthey come to youيُجَادِلُونَكَto argue with youيَقُولُthey sayالَّذِينَthoseكَفَرُواwho disbelievedإِنَّindeedهَذَاthisإِلَّاis nothing butأَسَاطِيرُmythsالْأَوَّلِينَof the ancients

And if they see every sign, they will not believe in it until when they come to you, they argue with you. Those who disbelieve say, 'This is nothing but myths of the ancients!'

الْآيَاتُThe signsفَأَخْبِرْهُمْSo inform them that theyلَاnotيَفْقَهُونَunderstand with their heartsبِقُلُوبِهِمwith their heartsوَلَاand notيَسْمَعُونَhear with their earsوَلَاand notيُؤْمِنُونَbelieveبِمَاin whatرَأَوْهُthey have seenمِنَofالنَّارِthe Fire

So inform them that they do not understand with their hearts, and they do not hear with their ears, nor do they believe in what they have seen of the Fire.

كَمَاAsأَخْبَرَHe informedعَنْهُمْabout themحَيْثُwhereقَالُواthey saidفُصِلَتْOur hearts are coveredقُلُوبُنَاour heartsفِيinأَكِنَّةٍcoversمِمَّاfrom whatتَدْعُونَاyou call usإِلَيْهِtoوَفِيand inآذَانِنَاour earsوَقَرٌheaviness

As He informed about them, where they said, 'Our hearts are covered from that to which you call us, and in our ears is heaviness.'

وَمِنْAnd between usبَيْنِنَاand youوَبَيْنَكُمْthere is a veilحِجَابٌa curtainفَاذْكُرُواSo mentionالْمَوَانِعَthe obstaclesعَلَىtoالْقُلُوبِthe heartsوَالسَّمْعِthe hearingوَالْأَبْصَارِand sight

And between us and you is a veil. So mention the obstacles on the hearts, the hearing, and the sight.

وَأَبْدَانُهُمْAnd their bodiesحَيَّةٌare aliveتَسْمَعُthey hearالْأَصْوَاتَthe soundsوَتَرَىand seeالْأَشْخَاصَthe peopleلَكِنَّbutحَيَاةَthe lifeالْبَدَنِof the bodyبِدُونِwithoutحَيَاةِthe lifeالْقَلْبِof the heartمِثْلُis like the lifeحَيَاةِthe lifeالْبَهَائِمِof the animalsلَهَاit hasسَمْعٌhearingوَبَصَرٌand sightوَهِيَand itتَأْكُلُeatsوَتَشْرَبُand drinksوَتَنْكِحُand marries.

And their bodies are alive; they hear the sounds and see the people. But the life of the body without the life of the heart is like the life of the animals; it has hearing and sight, and it eats and drinks and marries.

وَلِهَذَاAnd for this reasonقَالَHe saidتَعَالَىthe Most Highالْبَقَرَةُthe Cow

And for this reason, He, the Most High, said: the Cow.

وَمَثَلُAnd the exampleالَّذِينَof those whoكَفَرُواdisbelievedكَمَثَلِis like the exampleالَّذِيof one whoيُنْعِقُcallsبِمَاwith that whichلَاnotيَسْمَعُhearsإِلَّاexceptدُعَاءًa callوَنِدَاءًand a cryفَشَبَّهَهُمْThus likened themبِالْغَنَمِto sheepالَّتِيwhichيُنْعِقُthe shepherd callsبِهَاto themالرَّاعِيthe shepherdوَهِيَand theyلَاnotتَسْمَعُhearإِلَّاexceptنِدَاءًthe call.

And the example of those who disbelieved is like the example of one who calls with that which he does not hear except a call and a cry. Thus, He likened them to sheep which the shepherd calls to, and they do not hear except the call.

كَمَاAsقَالَHe saidفِيinالْآيَةِthe verseالْأُخْرَىthe other

As He said in the other verse.

الْفُرْقَانُAl-FurqanأَمْOrتَحْسَبُdo you thinkأَنَّthatأَكْثَرَهُمْmost of themيَسْمَعُونَhearأَوْorيَعْقِلُونَunderstandإِنَّIndeedهُمْthey areإِلَّاnotكَالْأَنْعَامِlike the animalsبَلْbutهُمْthey areأَضَلُّmore astrayسَبِيلًاof a path.

Or do you think that most of them hear or understand? Indeed, they are not like the animals; rather, they are more astray in their path.

وَقَالَAnd He saidتَعَالَىthe Most Highالْأَعْرَافُthe Heights

And He, the Most High, said: the Heights.

وَلَقَدْAnd indeedذَرَأْنَاWe have createdلِجَهَنَّمَfor Hellكَثِيرًاmanyمِنَofالْجِنِّthe jinnوَالإِنْسِand mankind.

And indeed, We have created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind.

لَهُمْThey haveقُلُوبٌheartsلَاthat do notيَفْقَهُونَunderstand with themبِهَاin them.وَلَهُمْAnd they haveأَعِينٌeyesلَاthat do notيُبْصِرُونَsee with themبِهَاin them.وَلَهُمْAnd they haveآذَانٌearsلَاthat do notيَسْمَعُونَhear with them.

They have hearts that do not understand with them, and they have eyes that do not see with them, and they have ears that do not hear with them.

أُولَـٰئِكَThoseكَالْأَنْعَامِare like the animalsبَلْbutهُمْthey areأَضَلُّmore astray.

Those are like the animals; rather, they are more astray.

فَطَائِفَةٌAnd a groupمِّنَofالْمُفَسِّرِينَthe commentatorsتَقُولُsayفِيinهَذِهِthisالْآيَاتِversesمَاand whatأَشْبَهَهَاresembles them.

And a group of the commentators say in these verses and what resembles them.

كَكَوْلِهِAs His sayingيُونُسَYunusوَإِذَاAnd whenمَسَّstrikesالْإِنْسَانَmanالضُّرَّharmدَعَانَاhe calls usلِجَانِبِهِto his sideأَوْorقَاعِدًاsittingأَوْorقَائِمًاstandingفَلَمَّاBut whenكَشَفْنَاWe relieveعَنْهُhim ofضُرِّهِthe harmمَرَّhe goesكَأَنَّas ifلَمْnotيَدْعُنَاcall usإِلَىtoضَرٍّharmمَسَّهُstruck him.

As His saying Yunus: 'And when harm strikes man, he calls us to his side, or sitting, or standing. But when We relieve him from the harm, he goes as if he had not called us to harm that struck him.'

وَأَمْثَالُهَاAnd examples of itمِمَّاfrom whatذُكِرَwas mentionedاللَّهُAllahفِيinعُيُوبِthe defectsالْإِنْسَانِof manوَذَمَّهَاand its blame.

And examples of it are from what Allah mentioned about the defects of man and its blame.

فَيَقُولُSo he saysهَؤُلَاءِtheseهَذِهِthisالآيَةُverseفِيinالْكَفَّارِthe disbelieversوَالْمَرَادُand the meaningبِالْإِنْسَانِof manهُنَاhere.

So he says: 'These are the verse in the disbelievers, and the meaning of man here...'

الْكَافِرُthe disbelieverفَيَبْقَىThus it remainsمَنwhoeverيَسْمَعُhearsذَلِكَthatيَظُنُّhe thinksأَنَّهُthat it is forلَيْسَnotلِمَنْfor those whoيَظْهَرُونَmanifestالْإِسْلَامَIslamفِيinهَذَاthis.

Thus it remains that whoever hears that thinks that it is not for those who manifest Islam in this.

الذَّمُّblameوَالْوَعِيدُand threatsنَصِيبٌa shareبَلْbutيَذْهَبُit goesوَهُمُّهُhis thoughtإِلَىtoمَنwhoeverكَانَwasمَظْهَرًاmanifestingلِلشِّرْكِof polytheismمِنَofالْعَرَبِthe Arabsأَوْorإِلَىtoمَنwhoeverيَعْرِفُهُمْhe knows themمِنَfromمَظَاهِرِthe manifestationsالْكُفْرِof disbeliefكَالْيَهُودِlike the Jewsوَالنَّصَارَىand the Christiansوَمُشْرِكِيand polytheistsالتُّرْكِthe Turksوَالْهِنْدِand Hindوَنَحْوٍand similarذَلِكَthat.

But it goes to the thought of whoever was manifesting polytheism of the Arabs, or to whoever he knows from the manifestations of disbelief like the Jews and Christians, and the polytheists of the Turks and Hind, and similar.

فَلَاSo do notيَنتَفِعُbenefitبِهَذِهِwith thisالْآيَاتِthe versesالَّتِيthatأَنْزَلَهَاwas revealedاللَّهُAllahلِيَهْتَدِيfor guidanceبِهَاby itعِبَادَهُHis servants.

So do not benefit by these verses that Allah revealed for the guidance of His servants.

فَيُقَالُSo it is saidأُولَىfirstالْمُظْهَرُونَthose who manifestلِلْإِسْلَامِIslamفِيهِمamong themمُؤْمِنٌbelieverوَمُنَافِقٌand hypocriteوَالمُنَافِقُونَand the hypocritesكَثِيرُونَare manyفِيinكُلِّeveryزَمَانٍage.

So it is said that among those who manifest Islam are both believer and hypocrite, and the hypocrites are many in every age.

وَالمُنَافِقُونَAnd the hypocritesفِيinالدَّرْكِthe lowestالْأَسْفَلِpitمِنَofالنَّارِthe Fire.

And the hypocrites are in the lowest pit of the Fire.

وَيُقَالُAnd it is saidثَانِيًاsecondالْإِنْسَانُmanقَدْmayيَكُونَbeعِندَهُwith himشُعُبَةٌa portionمِّنَofنِفَاقٍhypocrisyوَكُفْرٍand disbeliefوَإِنْeven ifكَانَhe hadمَعَهُwith himإِيمَانٌfaithكَمَاasقَالَthe Prophetالنَّبِيُّ(peace be upon him)

And it is said secondly that a man may have a portion of hypocrisy and disbelief, even if he has faith, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said.

فِيInالْحَدِيثِthe hadithالْمُتَّفَقِagreedعَلَيْهِupon itأَرْبَعٌFourمَنْwhoeverكَانَhasفِيهِin himكَانَwasمُنَافِقًاa hypocriteخَالِصًاpurelyوَمَنْand whoeverكَانَتhasفِيهِin himخَصْلَةٌa qualityمِّنْهُنَّof themكَانَتwasفِيهِin himخَصْلَةٌa characteristicمِّنَofالنِّفَاقِhypocrisyحَتَّىuntilيَذَعَهَاhe leaves itإِذَاwhenحَدَّثَhe speaksكَذَبَhe liesوَإِذَاand ifأُؤْمِنَhe is entrustedخَانَhe betrays.

In the hadith agreed upon, 'Four characteristics whoever has them is a hypocrite purely, and whoever has one of them has a characteristic of hypocrisy until he leaves it: When he speaks, he lies; and if he is entrusted, he betrays.'
