يُحْصَىare countedالذُّنُوبُthe sinsعَلَيْكَupon youأَيَّاO ...مُ...mالصَّدَاقَةِof friendshipلِلْعَدَاوَةِْto hostility

The sins are counted against you O... m of friendship to hostility.

وَقِيلَAnd it was saidلِبَعْضِto someالْحُكَمَاءِof the wise menأَيُّWhichالنَّاسِpeopleأَحَقُّmost deservingأَنْthatيُتَّقَىhe be fearedقَالَHe saidعَدُوٌّAn enemyقَوِيٌّstrongوَسُلْطَانٌand a rulerغَشُومٌtyrannicalوَصَدِيقٌand a friendمُخَادِعٌdeceitful

And it was said to some of the wise men: Which of the people is most deserving to be feared? He said: A strong enemy, a tyrannical ruler, and a deceitful friend.

وَأَنْشَدَAnd he recitedلِدِعْبِلِfor Di'bilبْنِson ofعَلِيٍّAliالْخُزَاعِيِّAl-Khuza'iوَافِرٌWafir meter

And he recited for Di'bil bin Ali Al-Khuza'i in Wafir meter:

عَدُوٌّAn enemyرَاحَwho goesفِيinثَوْبِthe garment ofالصَّدِيقِthe friend

An enemy who goes about in the garment of the friend,

كَشَرِيكٍlike a partnerفِيinالصَّبُوحِthe morning drinkوَفِيand inالْغَبُوقِِthe evening drink

like a partner in the morning drink and in the evening drink.

لَهُHe hasوَجْهَانِtwo facesظَاهِرُهُhis outer isابْنُson ofعَمِّuncleوَبَاطِنُهُand his inner isبْنُson ofزَانِيَةٍan adulteressعَتِيقِancient

He has two faces; his outer is a cousin, and his inner is the son of an ancient adulteress.

يَسُرُّكَHe pleases youمُقْبِلًاwhen comingوَيَسُؤُكَand displeases youغَبِيًّاwhen absent

He pleases you when coming and displeases you when absent,

كَذَاكَthusتَكُونُareأَوْلَادُchildren ofالطَّرِيقِthe road

thus are the children of the road.

لِكَثِيرَةِFor KathayyirعَزَّةَAzzaخَفِيفٌKhafif meter

For Kathayyir Azza in Khafif meter:

أَنْتَYou areفِيamongstمَعْشَرٍa groupإِذَاifغَبْتَyou are absentعَنْهُمْfrom them

You are amongst a group who, if you are absent from them,

جَعَلُواthey makeكُلَّمَاwhateverيُزِينُكَadorns youشَيْئًاsomething

they turn everything that adorns you into something,

وَإِذَاand whenمَاtheyرَأَوْكَsee youقَالُواthey sayجَمِيعًاall together

and when they see you, they all say:

أَنْتَYou areمِنْfromأَكْرَمِthe most nobleالرِّجَالِof menعَلَيْنَاto us

You are the most noble of men to us.

أَنْشَدَنِيRecited to meابْنُthe son ofأَبِيAbiطَاهِرٍTahirالْكَاتِبُthe scribeخَفِيفٌKhafif meter

The son of Abi Tahir the scribe recited to me in Khafif meter:

حَالَIt changedعَمَّاfrom whatعَهِدْتُI knewرَيْبُthe vicissitudes ofالزَّمَانِtimeوَاسْتَحَالَتْand changedمَوَدَّةُthe affection ofالْأَخْوَانِthe brothers

The vicissitudes of time changed from what I knew, and the affection of brothers changed.
