وَأَنْشَدَنِيAnd recited to meأَبُوAbuالْعَبَّاسِAl-AbbasالْأَزْدِيُّAl-Azdiوَافِرٌ:Wafir meter:

Abu al-Abbas al-Azdi recited to me in the Wafir meter:

  • لَكَلْبُIndeed, the dog ofالنَّاسِthe peopleإِنْifفَكَّرْتَyou thinkفِيهِمْabout them
  • Indeed, the dog of the people, if you think about them,

  • أَضَرُّis more harmfulعَلَيْكَto youمِنْthanكَلْبِthe dog ofالْكِلَابِdogs.
  • is more harmful to you than the dog of dogs.

  • لِأَنَّBecauseالْكَلْبَthe dogتَخْسَؤُهُyou scold itفَيَخْسَأُand it retreats
  • Because the dog you scold it and it retreats,

  • وَكَلْبُand the dog ofالنَّاسِthe peopleيَرْبِضُcrouchesلِلْعِتَابِfor blame.
  • while the dog of the people crouches ready for blame.

  • وَأَنَّAnd thatالْكَلْبَthe dogلَاdoes notيُؤْذِيharmجَلِيسًاa companion
  • And that the dog does not harm a companion,

  • وَأَنْتَwhile youالدَّهْرَalwaysمِنْfromذَاthisفِيinعَذَابِtorment.
  • while you are forever in torment from this.

    حَدَّثَنَاNarrated to usأَحْمَدُAhmadبْنُson ofمَنْصُورٍMansurعَنْfromأَبِيهِhis fatherعَنِfromالْأَصْمَعِيِّAl-Asma'iقَالَwho said:

    Ahmad ibn Mansur narrated to us from his father from al-Asma'i who said:

    حَضَرَتْAttendedبَعْضَsomeالْأَعْرَابِBedouinالْوَفَاةُdeathوَكَلْبٌand a dogفِيinجَانِبِthe side ofخَيْمَةٍa tentفَقَالَso he saidلِأَكْبَرِto the eldestوَلَدِهِof his sonsمُنْسَرِحٌ:Munsarih meter:

    Death approached a Bedouin while a dog was at the side of his tent, so he said to his eldest son in the Munsarih meter:

  • أُوصِيكَI advise youخَيْرًاwellبِهِregarding itفَإِنَّfor indeedلَهُit has
  • I advise you well regarding it, for indeed it has

  • صَنَائِعًاgood deedsلَاI will notأَزَالُceaseأَحْمَدُهَاpraising them.
  • good deeds whose praise I will never cease.

  • يَدُلُّIt guidesضَيْفِيmy guestعَلَيَّto meفِيinغَسَقِthe darkness ofاللَّيْلِthe night
  • It guides my guest to me in the darkness of the night

  • إِذَاwhenالنَّارُthe fireنَامَsleepsمُوقِدُهَاits stoker.
  • when the stoker of the fire is asleep.

    أَخْبَرَنِيInformed meأَبُوAbuالْفَضْلِal-FadlأَحْمَدُAhmadبْنُson ofأَبِيAbiطَاهِرٍTahirقَالَwho said:

    Abu al-Fadl Ahmad ibn Abi Tahir informed me, saying:

    أَخْبَرَنِيInformed meبَعْضُsomeالْأُدَبَاءِliterary menكَانَthere wasلِإِبْرَاهِيمَfor Ibrahimبْنِson ofهَرْمَةَHarmaكِلَابٌdogs

    Some literati informed me that Ibrahim ibn Harma had dogs

    إِذَاwhenأَبْصَرَتِthey sawالْأَضْيَافَthe guestsبَئِسَتْthey behaved badlyلَهُمْto themوَلَمْand did notتَنْبَحْbark

    that when they saw guests, they welcomed them and did not bark,

    وَبَصْبَصَتْand waggedبِأَذْنَابِهَاtheir tailsبَيْنَbetweenأَيْدِيهِمْtheir hands,فَقَالَso he saidيَمْدَحُهَاpraising themكَامِلٌ:Kamil meter:

    wagging their tails before them, so he said praising them in the Kamil meter:

  • وَيَدُلُّAnd it guidesضَيْفِيmy guestفِيinالضَّلَامِthe darknessإِذَاwhenسَرَىhe travels by night
  • And it guides my guest in the darkness when he travels by night,

  • إِيقَادُthe kindling ofنَارِيmy fireأَوْorنُبَاحُthe barking ofكِلَابِdogs.
  • by the kindling of my fire or the barking of dogs.
