جَمَاعَةُA groupأَحْدَاثٍof youthsيَشْرَبُونَare drinking
A group of youths are drinking
وَبَيْنَand beforeأَيْدِيهِمْthemمِنْofجَمِيعِallالْفَوَاكِهِthe fruitsوَالرَّيَاحِينِand aromatic herbs
and before them are all kinds of fruits and aromatic herbs
فَرَحَّبُواso they welcomedبِيmeوَأَجْلَسُونِيand seated meمَعَهُمْwith them
so they welcomed me and seated me with them
وَرَأَيْتُand I sawلَهُمْfor themبِزَّةًattireحَسَنَةًgood
and I saw that they had good attire
فَوَضَعْتُso I castعَيْنِيmy eyeعَلَيْهَاupon it
so I cast my eye upon it
وَجَعَلْتُand I beganأَسْقِيهِمْto serve them drinkوَيَشْرَبُونَwhile they drank
and I began to serve them drink while they drank
وَأَرْفُقُand I acted gentlyبِنَفْسِيwith myselfإِلَىuntilأَنْthatنَامُواthey slept
and I acted gently until they slept
وَنَامَand sleptكُلُّeveryمَنْone whoفِيinالدَّارِthe house
and everyone in the house slept
فَقُمْتُso I stood upوَكَوَّرْتُand gathered upمَاwhatعِنْدَهُمْthey had
so I stood up and gathered up what they had
وَذَهَبْتُand I wentأُخْرِجُto exit
and I went to exit
فَوَثَبَthen leapedعَلَيَّupon meالْكَلْبُthe dogوَثْبَةَwith the leapالْأَسَدِof a lion
then the dog leaped upon me like the leap of a lion
وَصَاحَand barkedوَجَعَلَand beganيَتَرَاجَعُto retreatوَيَنْبَحُand bark
and barked and began to retreat and bark
إِلَىuntilأَنْthatانْتَبَهَwoke upمَنْwhoكَانَwasنَائِماًsleeping
until whoever was sleeping woke up
فَخَجِلْتُso I became embarrassedوَاسْتَحْيَيْتُand ashamed
so I became embarrassed and ashamed
فَلَمَّاso whenكَانَit wasالنَّهَارُdaytime
so when it was daytime
فَعَلِمُواthey didمِثْلَlikeفِعْلِهِمْtheir actionأَمْسِyesterday
they acted like their action of yesterday
وَفَعَلْتُand I didأَنَاIأَيْضاًalsoبِهِمْto themمِثْلَlikeذَلِكَthat
and I also did likewise to them
وَجَعَلْتُand I beganأُوقِعُto deviseالْحِيلَةَa trickفِيregardingأَمْرِthe matter ofالْكَلْبِthe dogإِلَىuntilاللَّيْلِnighttime
and I began to devise a trick regarding the matter of the dog until nighttime
فَمَاso it did notأَمْكَنَنِيbecome possible for meفِيهِin itحِيلَةٌany trick
so no trick was possible for me concerning it
فَلَمَّاthen whenنَامُواthey sleptرُمْتُI attemptedالَّذِيthat whichرُمْتُهُI attempted
then when they slept, I attempted what I had attempted
فَإِذَاbeholdالْكَلْبُthe dogقَدْhadعَارَضَنِيopposed meمِثْلَlikeمَاwhatعَارَضَنِيhe opposed meبِهِwith
behold, the dog opposed me just as he had opposed me with it before
فَجَعَلْتُso I beganأَحْتَالُto schemeثَلَاثَthreeلَيَالٍnights
so I began to scheme for three nights
فَلَمَّاthen whenأَيِسْتُI despairedطَلَبْتُI soughtالْخَلَاصَdeliveranceمِنْهُمْfrom themبِإِذْنِهِمْwith their permission
then when I despaired, I sought deliverance from them with their permission
وَقُلْتُand I saidأَتَأْذُنُونَdo you permitلِيmeأَعَزَّكُمُmay Allah strengthen you / most dear to youاللَّهُAllah
and I said, "Do you permit me, may Allah strengthen you,
فَإِنِّيfor I
for I
طَلَبْتُI soughtالْخَلَاصَdeliveranceمِنْهُمْfrom themبِإِذْنِهِمْwith their permission
I sought deliverance from them with their permission
وَقُلْتُand I saidأَتَأْذَنُونَdo you permitلِيmeأَعَزَّكُمُmost dear to youاللَّهُAllah
and I said, "Do you permit me, O most dear to us,
فَإِنِّيfor indeed I
for indeed I
عَلَىuponوِفَازٍdeparture
am upon departure?"
فَقَالُواso they saidالْأَمْرُthe matterلِلْعَجُوزِis for the old woman
So they said, "The matter rests with the old woman,
فَاسْتَأْذِنْهَاso ask her permission
so ask her permission."
فَقَالَتْso she saidهَاتِbring backمَاwhatمَعَكَis with youالَّذِيwhichأَخَذْتَهُyou tookمِنَfromالصَّيْرَفِيِّthe money-changer
So she said, "Bring back what is with you that you took from the money-changer,
وَامْضِand goحَيْثُwhereverشِئْتَyou wish
and go wherever you wish,
وَلَاand do notتُقِمْstayفِيinهَذِهِthisالْمَدِينَةِcity
and do not stay in this city,
لِأَنَّهُbecauseلَاit is notيَتَهَيَّأُpossibleلِأَحَدٍfor anyoneيَعْمَلُwho worksمَعِيwith meعَمَلاًany work
for it is not possible for anyone who works with me to do any work."
فَأَخَذَتِso she tookالْكِيسَthe bagوَأَخْرَجْتَنِيand expelled me
So she took the bag and expelled me
وَوَجَدْتُand I foundأَنَاIأَيْضاًalsoمَنْأًىa refugeأَنْtoأَسْلَمَbe safeمِنْfromيَدِهَاher hand
and I also found it a relief to be safe from her hand
فَكَانَso it wasقُصَارَىthe utmost ofالْقَوْلِthe matterأَنْthatأَطْلُبَI requestمِنْهَاfrom herنَفَقَةًprovisions
so the utmost of the matter was that I requested provisions from her
فَدَفَعَتْso she handed overإِلَيَّto meنَفَقَةًprovisions
and she handed over provisions to me
وَخَرَجَتْand she came outمَعِيwith meحَتَّىuntilأَخْرَجْتَنِيshe led me outعَنِofالْمَدِينَةِthe city
and she came out with me until she led me out of the city
وَالْكَلْبُwhile the dogمَعَهَاwas with her
while the dog was with her
حَتَّىuntilجُزْتُI crossedحُدُودَthe borders ofالْمَدِينَةِthe city
until I crossed the city's borders
وَوَقَفَتْand she stoppedوَمَضَيْتُand I proceededوَالْكَلْبُwhile the dogيَتْبَعُنِيwas following meحَتَّىuntilبَعُدْتُI grew distantثُمَّthen
and she stopped and I proceeded while the dog was following me until I grew distant, then
