فَلَلْكَلْبُFor the dog isخَيْرٌbetterمِنْthanخَلِيلٍa friendيَخُونُنِيwho betrays me

For the dog is better than a friend who betrays me

وَيَنْكِحُand marriesعُرْسِيmy wifeبَعْدَafterوَقْتِthe time ofرَحِيلِيmy departure

and marries my wife after the time of my departure

سَأَجْعَلُI will makeكَلْبِيmy dogمَاas long asحَيِيتُI liveمُنَادِمِيmy drinking companion

I will make my dog, as long as I live, my drinking companion

وَأَمْنَحُهُand I will grant himوُدِّيmy affectionوَصَفْوَand the purity ofخَلِيلِيmy friendship

and I will grant him my affection and the purity of my friendship

وَذَكَرَAnd mentionedابْنُIbnدَأْبٍDabقَالَsaying

And Ibn Dab mentioned, saying

كَانَthere wereلِلْحَسَنِfor Al-Hasanبْنِson ofمَالِكٍMalikالْغَنَوِيِّAl-Ghanawiأَخَوَانِtwo brothersوَنَدْمَانِand two drinking companions

Al-Hasan ibn Malik al-Ghanawi had two brothers and two companions

فَأَفْسَدَand corruptedبَعْضُهُمْone of themمَحْرَمًاa female relative

and one of them corrupted a female relative

وَكَانَAnd there wasلَهُfor himعَلَىatبَابِthe door ofدَارِهِhis houseكَلْبٌa dogقَدْwhichرَبَّاهُhe had raised

and he had a dog at the door of his house which he had raised

فَجَاءَSo cameالرَّجُلُthe manيَوْمًاone dayإِلَىtoمَنْزِلِthe dwelling ofالْحَسَنِAl-Hasan

So the man came one day to the dwelling of Al-Hasan

فَدَخَلَand he enteredإِلَىtoامْرَأَتِهِhis wife

and entered in upon his wife

فَقَالَتْand she saidلَهُto himقَدْHe hasبَعُدَgone far away

and she said to him, He has gone far away

فَهَلْso doلَكَyou haveفِيinجَلْسَةٍa sittingيُسَرُّwhere is rejoicedبَعْضُنَاsome of us

so would you like a sitting where we might find pleasure with each other?

فَقَالَSo he saidنَعَمْYes

So he said, Yes

فَأَكَلَاSo they ateوَشَرِبَاand drankوَوَقَعَand he fellعَلَيْهَاupon her

So they ate and drank, and he lay with her

فَلَمَّاThen whenعَلَاهَاhe mounted herوَثَبَsprangالْكَلْبُthe dogعَلَيْهِمَاupon them bothفَقَتَلَهُمَاand killed them both

Then when he mounted her, the dog sprang upon them both and killed them both

فَلَمَّاThen whenجَاءَcameالْحَسَنُAl-Hasanوَرَآهُمَاand saw themعَلَىinتِلْكَthatالْحَالِstate

Then when Al-Hasan came and saw them in that state

تَبَيَّنَit became clearمَاwhatفَعَلَاthey had done

what they had done became clear to him

فَأَنْشَأَso he beganيَقُولُrecitingطَوِيلٌin the Tawil meter

so he began reciting in the Tawil meter

أَضْحَىBecameخَلِيلِيmy friendبَعْدَafterصَفْوِthe purity ofمَوَدَّتِيmy affection

My friend became, after the purity of my affection

صَرِيعًاprostrateبِدَارِin the abode ofالذُّلِّdisgraceأَسْلَمَهُabandoned himالْغَدْرُtreachery

prostrate in the abode of disgrace, abandoned by treachery

وَطَوَىAnd he foldedحُرْمَتِيmy sanctityبَعْدَafterالْإِخَاءِbrotherhoodوَخَانَنِيand betrayed me

And he violated my sanctity after brotherhood and betrayed me

فَغَادَرَهُSo left himكَلْبِيmy dogوَقَدْwhileضَمَّهُenclosed himالْقَبْرُthe grave

So my dog left him while the grave enclosed him

قَالَSaidالْأَصْمَعِيُّAl-Asma'i

Al-Asma'i said

كَانَThere wasلِمَالِكِfor Malikبْنِson ofالْوَلِيدِAl-Walidأَصْدِقَاءُfriends

Malik ibn al-Walid had friends

لَاhe does notيُفَارِقُهُمْpart from themوَلَاand norيَصْبِرُcan he bearعَنْهُمْbeing without them

whom he would not part from and could not bear to be without

فَأَرْسَلَSo sentأَحَدُهُمْone of themإِلَىtoزَوْجَتِهِhis wife

So one of them sent to his wife

فَأَجَابَتْهُand she answered him

and she answered him

وَجَاءَand he cameلَيْلَةًby nightوَاسْتَخْفَىand concealed himselfفِيinبَعْضِsomeدُورِof the houses ofمَالِكٍMalik

and he came by night and concealed himself in some part of Malik's house

عِنْدَnearامْرَأَتِهِhis wife

near his wife

وَمَالِكٌwhile Malikلَاdid notيَعْلَمُknowشَيْئًاanythingمِنْofذَلِكَthat

while Malik did not know anything of that

فَلَمَّاThen whenأَخَذَhe beganفِيwithشَأْنِهَاher affair

Then when he engaged in her affair

وَثَبَsprangلِمَالِكٍbelonging to Malikعَلَيْهِمَاupon them bothفَقَتَلَهُمَاand killed them both

Malik's dog sprang upon them both and killed them both

وَمَالِكٌwhile Malikلَاdid notيَعْقِلُsenseمِنَdue toالسُّكْرِdrunkenness

while Malik was senseless from drunkenness

فَلَمَّاThen whenأَفَاقَhe regained consciousnessوَقَفَhe stoodعَلَيْهِمَاover them both

Then when he regained consciousness, he stood over them both
