فَإِنَّكُمَاSo if you twoإِنَّifتَنْظُرَانِيyou lookسَاعَةًan hourمِنَofالدَّهْرِtimeتَنْفَعْنِيit would benefit meلَدَىwithأُمِّmother ofجُنْدُبٍJundub
So if you two look for an hour of time, it would benefit me with the mother of Jundub.
فَلَمَّاSo whenأَرَادَhe wantedالِانْتِظَارَthe waitلَمْhe did notيَقُلْsayإِلَىtoفَلَمَّاSo whenقَالَhe saidعَزَّMightyوَجَلَّand Majestic«إِلَىtoرَبِّهَاher Lordنَاظِرَةًlooking
So when he wanted to wait, he did not say to, but when he said, 'to her Lord looking', we knew that he did not mean waiting but rather looking.
وَلَمَّاAnd whenقَرَنَتْHe coupledاللَّهُGodالنَّظَرَthe lookingبِذِكْرِwith mention ofالْوَجْهِthe faceأَرَادَhe wantedنَظَرَthe sightالْعَيْنَيْنِof the two eyesالَّتِيthatفِيinالْوَجْهِthe faceكَمَاasقَالَhe said«قَدْIndeedنَرَىwe seeتَقَلُّبَturningوَجْهَكَyour faceفِيinالسَّمَاءِthe skyفَلَنُوَلِّيَنَّكَwe shall surely turn you
And when God coupled looking with mention of the face, he meant the sight of the two eyes that are in the face, as he said, 'Indeed we see your face turning in the sky, we shall surely turn you.'
فَذَكَرَSo he mentionedالْوَجْهَthe faceوَمَعَ ذَٰلِكَand neverthelessأَرَادَhe meantتَقَلُّبَthe turningعَيْنَيْهُof his two eyesنَحْوَtowardsالسَّمَاءِthe skyيَنْتَظِرُwaitingنُزُولَthe descentالْمَلَائِكَةِthe angelعَلَيْهِupon himبِصَرْفِby divertingاللَّهِGodلَهُfor himعَنْfromقِبْلَةِthe qiblaبَيْتِthe houseالمَقْدِسِthe sanctuary
He mentioned the face, and nevertheless he meant the turning of his two eyes towards the sky waiting for the descent of the angel upon him, by diverting God from the qibla of the sanctuary to the Kaaba.
فَإِنَّSo ifقَالَhe saidالْقَائِلُthe one sayingلَمْdid notنَقَلْmoveقَوْلَهُhis word«إِلَىtoثَوَابِrewardرَبِّهَاher Lordنَاظِرَةًlooking
So if the one saying said that his word 'to her Lord looking' means 'to the reward of her Lord looking',
قِيلَit was saidلَهُto himثَوَابُthe rewardاللَّهُGodعَزَّMightyوَجَلَّand Majesticغَيْرُهُother than itوَاللَّهُAnd GodتَعَالَىThe Exaltedقَالَsaidإِلَىtoرَبِّهَاher Lordنَاظِرَةًlooking
it was said to him: The reward of God is other than this, and God, The Exalted, said 'to her Lord looking' and did not say 'looking to other than it'.
وَالْقُرْآنُAnd the Quranعَلَىis uponظَاهِرِهِits apparent meaningوَلَيْسَand it is notلَنَاfor usأَنtoنُزِيلَهُremove itعَنْfromظَاهِرِهِits apparent meaningإِلَّاexceptلِحُجَّةٍwith proofوَإِلَّاOtherwiseفَهُوَit isعَلَىuponظَاهِرِهِits apparent meaning
And the Quran is upon its apparent meaning, and it is not for us to remove it from its apparent meaning except with proof, and otherwise it is upon its apparent meaning.
أَلَاDo not you seeتَرَىseeأَنَّthatاللَّهَGodعَزَّThe Mightyوَجَلَّand Majesticلَمَّاwhenقَالَhe saidصَلُّواprayلِيfor meوَاعْبُدُونِيAnd worship meلَمْdid notيَجُزْis permissibleأَنْtoيَقُولُsayقَائِلٌone sayingإِنَّهُthat heأَرَادَmeantغَيْرَهُother than itوَيُزِيلَand removeالْكَلَامَthe speechعَنْfromظَاهِرِهِits apparent meaning
Do not you see that God, The Mighty and Majestic, when he said, 'Pray for me and worship me', that it is not permissible for one saying to say that he meant other than it and remove the speech from its apparent meaning?
فَلِذَٰلِكَThereforeلَمَّاwhenقَالَhe saidإِلَىtoرَبِّهَاher Lordنَاظِرَةًlookingلَمْdid notيَجُزْis permissibleلَنَاfor usأَنْtoنُزِيلَremoveالْقُرْآنَthe Quranعَنْfromظَاهِرِهِits apparent meaningبِغَيْرِwithoutحُجَّةٍproof
Therefore, when he said 'to her Lord looking', it is not permissible for us to remove the Quran from its apparent meaning without proof.
ثُمَّThenيُقَالُit is saidلِلْمُعْتَزِلَةِto the Mu'tazilitesإِنَّthatجَازَit is permissibleلَكُمْfor youأَنْtoتَزْعُمُواassumeأَنْthatقَوْلَthe sayingاللَّهِof GodعَزَّMightyوَجَلَّand Majesticإِلَىtoرَبِّهَاher Lordنَاظِرَةًlookingإِنَّمَاonlyأَرَادَmeantبِهِby itأَنَّهَاthat itإِلَىtoغَيْرِهِother than itنَاظِرَةًlookingفَلِمَso whyلَاnotجَازَit is permissibleلَهُمْfor themأَنْtoيَقُولُواsay
Then it is said to the Mu'tazilites: If it is permissible for you to assume that the saying of God, The Mighty and Majestic, 'to her Lord looking' only meant that it was 'looking to other than it', then why is it not permissible for them to say?
