يَتَأَيُّهَاOالَّذِينَthose whoءَامَنُواbelieved
O you who have believed.
فَعُلِمَSo it is knownأَنَّthatقَوْلَthe statementالْكَرَامِيَّةِof the Karamitesفِيinالْإِيمَانِfaithوَإِنْand ifكَانَit wasبَاطِلًاfalseمُبْتَدَعًاinnovatedلَمْnoيَسْبِقْهُمْpreceded themإِلَيْهِto itأَحَدٌanyone
So it is known that the statement of the Karamites regarding faith, even though it is false and innovated, was not preceded by anyone.
فَقَوْلُBut the statementالْجَهْمِيَّةِof the Jahmitesأَبْطَلَis more invalidمِنْهُthan itوَأُولَـٰئِكَand thoseأَقْرَبُare closerإِلَىtoالِاسْتِدْلالِthe argumentبِاللُّغَةِwith the languageوَالْقُرْآنِand the Quranوَالْعَقْلِand reasonمِنْthanالْجَهْمِيَّةِthe Jahmites.
But the statement of the Jahmites is more invalid than it, and those are closer to arguing from language, Quran, and reason than the Jahmites.
وَالْكَرَامِيَّةُAnd the Karamitesتُوَافِقُagreeالْمُرْجِئَةَwith the Murjitesوَالْجَهْمِيَّةَand the Jahmitesفِي أَنَّin thatإِيمَانَthe faithالنَّاسِof the peopleكُلَّهُمْall of themسَوَاءٌis the sameوَلَاand does notيَسْتَثْنُونَexcludeفِيinالْإِيمَانِthe faith.
And the Karamites agree with the Murjites and the Jahmites that the faith of all people is the same, and they do not exclude anyone in faith.
بَلْRatherيَقُولُونَthey sayهُوَit isمُؤْمِنٌa believerحَقًّاtrulyلِمَنfor whoeverأَظْهَرَdemonstratesالْإِيمَانَthe faith.
Rather, they say that it is truly a believer for whoever demonstrates faith.
وَإِذَاAnd ifكَانَhe isمُنَافِقًاa hypocriteفَهُوَthen he isمَخْلَدٌeternallyفِيinالنَّارِthe fireعِندَهُمْin their view,فَإِنَّهُfor heإِنَّمَاonlyيَدْخُلُentersالْجَنَّةَparadiseمَنْfromآمَنَbelievedبَاطِنًاinternallyوَظَاهِرًاand externally.
And if he is a hypocrite, then he is eternally in the fire in their view, for he only enters paradise who believes internally and externally.
وَمَنAnd whoeverحَكَىclaimsعَنْهُمْabout themأَنَّهُمْthat theyيَقُولُونَsayالْمُنَافِقُthe hypocriteيَدْخُلُentersالْجَنَّةَparadise,فَقَدْhasكَذَبَliedعَلَيْهِمon them,بَلْbutيَقُولُونَthey sayالْمُنَافِقُthe hypocriteمُؤْمِنٌis a believerلَاnotأَنَّthatالْإِيمَانَfaithهُوَisالْقَوْلُthe statementالظَّاهِرُof the apparent,كَمَاjust asيُسَمِّيْهُthey call itغَيْرُهُمْothers.مُسْلِمًاa Muslim,إِذْbecauseالإِسْلَامُIslamهُوَisالِاسْتِسْلَامُsubmissionالظَّاهِرُapparent.
And whoever claims about them that they say the hypocrite enters paradise has lied on them; they say rather that the hypocrite is a believer, not that faith is the apparent statement, just as others call it a Muslim, because Islam is the apparent submission.
إِذْSinceالإِسْلَامُIslamهُوَisالِاسْتِسْلَامُthe submissionالظَّاهِرُapparent.وَلَاand there is no doubtرَيْبٌdoubtأَنَّthatقَوْلَthe statementالْجَهْمِيَّةِof the Jahmitesأَفْسَدَis more corruptمِنْthanقَوْلِهِمtheir statement,مِنْfromوُجُوهٍvarietiesمُتَعَدِّدَةٍof differentشَرْعًاin lawوَلُغَةًand languageوَعَقْلًاand mind.
Since Islam is the apparent submission, there is no doubt that the statement of the Jahmites is more corrupt than their statement, in various aspects of law, language, and reason.
وَإِذَاAnd ifقِيلَit was saidقَوْلُthe statementالْكَرَامِيَّةِof the Karamitesقَوْلٌthe statementخَارِجٌis outsideعَنْofإِجْمَاعِthe consensusالْمُسْلِمِينَof Muslims,قِيلَit is said:وَقَوْلُAnd the statementجَهْمٍof Jahmفِيinالْإِيمَانِfaithقَوْلٌis a statementخَارِجٌoutsideعَنْofإِجْمَاعِthe consensusالْمُسْلِمِينَof Muslims.
And if it is said that the statement of the Karamites is outside the consensus of Muslims, it is said that the statement of Jahm regarding faith is also outside the consensus of Muslims.
قَبْلَهُEven before it,بَلْratherالسَّلَفُthe predecessorsكَفَرُواdisbelievedمَنْwhoeverيَقُولُsaysبِقَوْلِthe statementجَهْمٍof Jahmفِيinالْإِيمَانِfaith.
Even before it, the predecessors disbelieved whoever said the statement of Jahm in faith.
وَقَدْAnd certainlyاحْتَجَّthe people have arguedالنَّاسُthe peopleعَلَىonفَسَادِthe invalidityقَوْلِthe statementالْكَرَامِيَّةِof the Karamitesبِحُجَجٍwith evidencesصَحِيحَةٍvalid.وَالحُجَجُAnd the argumentsمِنْofجِنْسِهَاthe same typeعَلَىagainst theفَسَادِinvalidityقَوْلِthe statementالْجَهْمِيَّةِof the Jahmitesأَكْثَرُmore.
And certainly the people have argued against the invalidity of the statement of the Karamites with valid evidences, and the arguments of the same type against the invalidity of the statement of the Jahmites are more.
مِثْلُLikeقَوْلِهِHis statementتَعَالَىthe Most High:وَمِنَAnd of the peopleالنَّاسِsome peopleمَنwhoيَقُولُsaysوَآمَنَّاand we have believedبِاللَّهِin Allahوَبِالْيَوْمِand in the Dayالْآخِرِof the Last.وَمَاAnd they are notهُمtheyبِمُؤْمِنِينَbelievers.
Like His statement, the Most High: 'And of the people are some who say, 'We have believed in Allah and in the Day of the Last'; and they are not believers.
قَالُواThey said:فَقَدْIndeed,نَفَىHe has negatedاللَّهُAllahالْإِيمَانَthe faithعَنْfromالْمُنَافِقِينَthe hypocrites.
They said: 'Indeed Allah has negated faith from the hypocrites.
فَنَقُولُSo we say:هَذَاthisحَقٌّis true,فَإِنَّforالْمُنَافِقُthe hypocriteلَيْسَis notبِمُؤْمِنٍa believerوَقَدْand he hasضَلَّgone astrayمَنْwhoeverسَمَّاهُnamed himمُؤْمِنًاa believer,كَذَلِكَjust asمَنْwhoeverقَامَstoodبِقَلْبِهِwith his heartعِلْمٌknowledgeوَتَصْدِيقٌand affirmationوَهُوَand he isيَجْحَدُdeniesالرَّسُولَthe Messengerوَيُعَادِيَهُand opposes him.كَالْيَهُودِLike the Jewsوَغَيْرِهِمand others.
So we say: this is true, for the hypocrite is not a believer, and he has gone astray who named him a believer; just as whoever stands with his heart in knowledge and affirmation while he denies the Messenger and opposes him, like the Jews and others.
سَمَّاهُمُHe called themاللَّهُAllahكُفَّارًاdisbelievers.لَمْHe has notيَسْمِهِمnamed themمُؤْمِنِينَbelieversقَطُّat allوَلَاand notدَخَلُواthey enteredفِيinشَيْءٍanyمِنْofأَحْكَامِthe rulingsالْإِيمَانِof faith,بِخِلَافٍunlikeالْمُنَافِقِthe hypocriteفَإِنَّهُfor heيَدْخُلُentersفِيintoأَحْكَامِthe rulingsالْإِيمَانِof faithالظَّاهِرَةِthe apparentفِيinالدُّنْيَاthe worldly.
Allah called them disbelievers; He has not named them believers at all, and they did not enter into any of the rulings of faith, unlike the hypocrite, for he enters into the apparent rulings of faith in this world.
بَلْRatherقَدْindeedنَفَىHe has negatedاللَّهُAllahالْإِيمَانَthe faithعَمَّنْfrom whomقَالَsaidبِلِسَانِهwith his tongueوَقَلْبِهِand his heartإِذَاifلَمْdid notيَعْمَلْact,كَمَاjust asقَالَHe saidتَعَالَىthe Most High:قَالَتِThe Bedouins said:الْأَعْرَابُThe Bedouinsوَآمَنَّاand we have believed.قُلْSay:لَمْYou have notتُؤْمِنُواbelieved.وَلَـٰكِنButقُولُواsay,أَسْلَمْنَاwe have submitted.وَلَمَّاAnd whenيَدْخُلِhas not enteredالْإِيمَانُthe faithفِيinقُلُوبِكُمْyour hearts.وَإِنْAnd ifتُطِيعُواyou obeyاللَّهَAllahوَرَسُولَهُand His Messengerلَاnotيَلتَكُواsubtractمِنْfromأَعْمَالِكُمْyour deedsشَيْئًاanything.إِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahغَفُورٌis Oft-ForgivingرَّحِيمٌMost Merciful.
Indeed, Allah has negated faith from those who said with their tongue and their heart if they did not act, just as He said, the Most High: 'The Bedouins said, 'And we have believed.' Say: 'You have not believed, but say, 'We have submitted,' for faith has not yet entered your hearts, and if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not subtract from your deeds anything; indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
إِنَّمَاIndeedالْمُؤْمِنُونَthe believersالَّذِينَthose whoآمَنُواhave believedبِاللَّهِin Allahوَرَسُولِهِand His Messenger.ثُمَّThenلَمْthey did notيَرْتَابُواdoubt.وَجَاهَدُواAnd they striveبِأَمْوَالِهِمwith their wealthوَأَنفُسِهِمand their selvesفِيinسَبِيلِthe path ofاللَّهِAllah.أُولَـٰئِكَThose areهُمُtheyالصَّادِقُونَthe truthful.
Indeed, the believers are those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger, and then did not doubt, and strive with their wealth and their selves in the path of Allah. Those are they who are the truthful.
فَنَفَىSo He negatedالإِيمَانَthe faithعَمَّنْfrom whomسِوَىother thanهَؤُلَاءِthese.
So He negated faith from anyone other than these.
