ابْنُsonعُتَيْبَةَAtibaفَقُلْتُso I saidلَهُto himإِنَّthatعَبْدَAbdالكَرِيمِAl-Karimوَمَيْمُونًاand Maimunبَلَّغَهُمَاit reached themأَنَّهُthatدَخَلَenteredعَلَيْكَupon youنَاسٌpeopleمِنَfromالْمُرْجِئَةِthe Murjitesفَعَرَضُواthey presentedقَوْلَهُمْtheir sayingعَلَيْكَto youفَقَبِلْتَand you acceptedقَوْلَهُمْtheir sayingقَالَhe saidفَقَبِلَand acceptedذَلِكَthatعَلَىuponمَيْمُونٍMaimunوَعَبْدِand Abdالْكَرِيمِ؟!Al-Karim?!
So I said to him: 'Verily, it was conveyed to Abd al-Karim and Maimun that some people from the Murjites entered upon you and they presented their saying to you, and you accepted their saying.' He said: 'And Maimun accepted that.' And Abd al-Karim?!
لَقَدْIndeedدَخَلَenteredعَلَيَّupon meاثْنَاtwelveعَشَرَtenرَجُلًاmenوَأَنَاand Iمَرِيضٌsickفَقَالُواand they saidيَاOأَبَاfatherمُحَمَّدَMuhammadبَلَغَكَhas it reached youأَنَّthatرَسُولَthe Messengerاللَّهِof Allah ﷺpeace be upon himأَتَاهُcame to himرَجُلٌa manبِأَمَةٍwith a black womanسَوْدَاءَblackأَوْorحَبَشِيَّةٍAbyssinianفَقَالَand he saidيَاOرَسُولَMessengerاللَّه!of Allah!
Indeed, twelve men entered upon me while I was sick, and they said: 'O father of Muhammad, has it reached you that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was approached by a man with a black woman, or an Abyssinian? He said: 'O Messenger of Allah!'
عَلَىuponرَقَبَةٍthe neckمُؤْمِنَةٍof a believerأَفَتَرَىshould I seeهَذِهِthisمُؤْمِنَةً؟is a believer?
Should I see whether this woman is a believer for the neck of a believer?
فَقَالَتْSo she saidنَعَمْyes
So she said: 'Yes.'
قَالَHe saidوَتَشْهَدِينَand do you testifyأَنَّthatمُحَمَّدًاMuhammadرَسُولَthe Messengerاللَّه؟of Allah?
And do you testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?
قَالَتْShe saidنَعَمْyes
She said: 'Yes.'
قَالَHe saidوَتَشْهَدِينَand do you testifyأَنَّthatالْجَنَّةَParadiseحَقٌّis trueوَالنَّارَand Hellحَقٌّ؟is true?
And do you testify that Paradise is true and that Hell is true?
قَالَتْShe saidنَعَمْyes
She said: 'Yes.'
قَالَHe saidوَتَشْهَدِينَand do you testifyأَنَّthatاللَّهAllahيَبْعَثُكِwill raise youمِنْfromبَعْدِafterالْمَوْتِ؟death?
And do you testify that Allah will raise you after death?
قَالَتْShe saidنَعَمْyes
She said: 'Yes.'
قَالَHe saidفَأَعْتِقِيهَاso free herفَإِنَّهَاfor she isمُؤْمِنَةٌa believer.
So free her, for she is a believer.
فَخَرَجُواSo they leftوَهُمْand theyيَنْتَحِلُونَadoptedذَلِكَ.that.
So they left and they adopted that.
قَالَHe saidمَعْقِلٌMa'qalثُمَّThenجَلَسْتُI satإِلَىtoمَيْمُونٍMaimunابْنِson ofمَهْرَانَMahranفَقُلْتُand I saidيَاOأَبَاfatherأَيُّوبَAyubلَوْifقَرَأْتَyou readلَنَاto usسُورَةًa Surahفَفَسِّرْتَهَاand explained it.
He said: 'Then I sat with Maimun bin Mahran and said: O Father of Ayub, if you could read to us a Surah and explain it.'
قَالَHe saidفَقَرَأَSo he readإِذَاwhenالشَّمْسُthe sunكُورِتْis folded[التَّكْوِير][At-Takwir]
So he read: 'When the sun is folded [At-Takwir].'
حَتَّىUntilإِذَاwhenبَلَغَhe reachedمُطَاعٌobedientثُمَّthenأَمِينٌtrustworthy[التَّكْوِير][At-Takwir]
Until he reached 'Obedient, then Trustworthy [At-Takwir].'
قَالَHe saidذَاكُمْthat isجِبْرِيلُGabrielوَالْخَيْبَةُand woeلِمَنْto whoeverيَقُولُsaysإِنَّthatإِيمَانَهُhis faithكَإِيمَانِis like the faithجِبْرِيلَof Gabriel.
He said: 'That is Gabriel, and woe to whoever says that his faith is like the faith of Gabriel.'
وَرَوَىAnd it was narratedحَنْبَلٌby HanbalعَنْfromأَحْمَدَAhmadوَرَوَىand narratedأَيْضًاalsoعَنْfromإِبْنِIbnأَبِيof AbiمَلِيكَةَMulaikaقَالَhe saidلَقَدْIndeedأَتَىit cameعَلَيَّto meبُرْهَةٌa periodمِنَofالدَّهْرِtime
And it was narrated by Hanbal from Ahmad, and it was also narrated from Ibn Abi Mulaika. He said: 'Indeed, there came to me a period of time.'
وَمَاand notأَرَانِيI sawأَدْرَكَreachedقَوْمًاa peopleيَقُولُونَthey sayأَحَدُهُمْone of themإِنِّيI amمُؤْمِنٌa believerمُسْتَكْمِلٌfulfillingالإِيمَانَthe faith.
And I did not see a people who said one of them: 'I am a believer completing faith.'
ثُمَّThenمَاnotرَضِيَcontentحَتَّىuntilقَالَhe saidإِيمَانِيmy faithعَلَىis uponإِيمَانِthe faithجِبْرِيلَof Gabrielوَمِيكَائِيلَand Michael.
Then he would not be content until he said: 'My faith is upon the faith of Gabriel and Michael.'
وَمَاAnd notزَالَstoppedالشَّيْطَانُthe Devilحَتَّىuntilقَالَhe saidأَحَدُهُمْone of themإِنِّيI amمُؤْمِنٌa believerوَإِنْand ifنَكِحَhe marriedأَخْتَهُhis sisterوَأُمَّهُand his motherوَبِنْتَهُand his daughter.
And the Devil did not stop until one of them said: 'I am a believer even if he marries his sister and his mother and his daughter.'
وَاللَّهِAnd by AllahلَقَدْindeedأَدْرَكْتُI reachedكَذَاsuch and suchوَكَذَاand suchمِنَofأَصْحَابِthe companionsالنَّبِيِّthe Prophetمَاnoمَاتَdiedأَحَدٌanyoneمِنْهُمْof themإِلَّاexceptوَهُوَand heيَخْشَىfearsالنِّفَاقَhypocrisyعَلَىonنَفْسِهِhimself.
And by Allah, I have reached such and such among the companions of the Prophet, and none of them died except that he fears hypocrisy upon himself.
وَقَدْAnd it has beenذُكِرَmentionedهَذَاthisالْمَعْنَىmeaningعَنْهُfrom himالْبُخَارِيُّAl-Bukhariفِيinصَحِيْحِهِ»his authentic.
And this meaning has been mentioned by Al-Bukhari in his authentic collection.
قَالَHe saidأَدْرَكْتُI reachedثَلاَثِينَthirtyمِنَofأَصْحَابِthe companionsمُحَمَّدٍMuhammadكُلُّهُمْall of themيَخَافُfearالنِّفَاقَhypocrisyعَلَىonنَفْسِهِhimself.
He said: 'I reached thirty of the companions of Muhammad, all of them fearing hypocrisy upon themselves.'
مَاnotمِنْهُمْof themأَحَدٌanyoneيَقُولُsaysإِيمَانُهُhis faithكَإِيمَانِis like the faithجِبْرِيلَof Gabriel.
None of them said: 'His faith is like the faith of Gabriel.'
وَرَوَىAnd it was narratedالْبَغَوِيُّby Al-Baghawiعَنْfromعَبْدِ اللَّهَAbdullahابْنِson ofمُحَمَّدٍMuhammadعَنْfromإِبْنِIbnمُجَاهِدٍMujahidقَالَhe saidكُنتُI wasعِندَatعَطَاءِAtahابْنِson ofأَبِيAbiرَبَاحٍRabahفَجَاءَthen cameابْنُهُhis sonيَعْقُوبُYa'qubفَقَالَand saidيَاOأَبَتَاهmy fatherإِنَّthatأَصْحَابًاcompanionsلِيof mineيَزْعُمُونَthey claimأَنَّthatإِيمَانَهُمْtheir faithكَإِيمَانِis like the faithجِبْرِيلَof Gabriel.
And it was narrated by Al-Baghawi from Abdullah bin Muhammad from Ibn Mujahid. He said: 'I was at the house of Atah bin Abi Rabah, and then his son Ya'qub came and said: 'O my father, indeed, some companions of mine claim that their faith is like the faith of Gabriel.'
فَقَالَHe saidيَاOبُنَيَّmy sonلَيْسَnotإِيمَانُthe faithمِنْofأَطَاعَone who obeysاللَّهَAllahكَإِيمَانٍis like the faithمِنْofعَصَىone who disobeysاللَّه.Allah.
He said: 'O my son, the faith of one who obeys Allah is not like the faith of one who disobeys Allah.'
