Ismail bin Saeed said: and the correct view is that the doctrine is one narration, that it is a saying and action,
وَيُحْتَمَلُand it is possibleقَوْلُهُhis saying:إِنَّthatالإِسْلَامَIslamقَوْلٌis a sayingيُرِيدُhe meansبِهِby itأَنَّهُthat it isلَاnotيَجِبُobligatoryفِيهِin itمَاwhatيَجِبُis obligatoryفِيinالإِيمَانِfaithمِنَofالْعَمَلِworksالمَشْرُوطِconditionedفِيهِin itلِأَنَّbecauseالصَّلَاةَprayerلَيْسَتْis notمِنْofشَرْطِهَاits conditionsإذْsinceالنَّصَّthe textعَنْهُabout itأَنَّهُthat it isلَاnotيُكَفِّرُdisbelieveبِتْرَكِهَاby abandoning itالصَّلَاةَ.the prayer.
And it is possible that his saying: 'Islam is a saying' means that what is obligatory in faith, such as good works, is not required in Islam, because prayer is not among its conditions, since the text states that one does not disbelieve by abandoning the prayer.
قَالَ:He said:وَقَدْAnd we haveقَضَيْنَاestablishedأَنَّthatالإِسْلَامَIslamوَالإِيمَانَand faithاسْمَانِare two namesلِمَعْنَيَيْنِ،for two meanings,وَذَكَرْنَاand we mentionedاخْتِلَافَthe disagreementالْفُقَهَاءِ،of the jurists,وَقَدْand we haveذَكَرَmentionedقَبْلَbeforeذَٰلِكَthatأَنَّthatالإِسْلَامَIslamوَالإِيمَانَand faithاسْمَانِare two namesلِمَعْنَيَيْنِfor different meanings,وَبِهِand with itقَالَsaidمَالِكَMalikوَشَرِيكٌ،and Sharik,وَحَمَّادٌand Hamadابْنُson ofزَيْدٍZaidبِالتَّفْرِقَةِwith distinctionبَيْنَbetweenالإِسْلَامِIslamوَالإِيمَانِ،and faith,
He said: And we have established that Islam and faith are two names for two meanings, and we mentioned the disagreement of the jurists, and we mentioned before that Islam and faith are two names for different meanings, and with it Malik and Sharik and Hamad bin Zaid said with distinction between Islam and faith.
قَالَ:He said:وَقَالَAnd saidأَصْحَابُthe companionsالشَّافِعِيِّof Al-Shafi'iوَأَصْحَابُand the companionsأَبِيof AbuحَنِيفَةَHanifahإِنَّهُمَاthat they are bothاسْمَانِtwo namesمَعْنَاهُمَاwhose meanings areواحِدٌ،one,
He said: And the companions of Al-Shafi'i and the companions of Abu Hanifah said that they are both two names whose meanings are one,
قَالَhe said:وَيُفِيدُand it indicatesهَذَاthisأَنَّthatالإِيمَانَfaithقَدْmayتَنْتَفِيbe negatedعَنْهُfrom itتَسْمِيَتُهُits namingمَعَwithبَقَاءِthe remainingالإِسْلَامِ عَلَيْهِ،of Islam upon it,وَهُوَand it isبِإِتِيَانِby performingالْكَبَائِرِthe major sinsالَّتِيthatذُكِرَتْwere mentionedفِيinالْخَبَرِthe reportفَيَخْرُجُit exitsعَنْfromتَسْمِيَةِthe namingالإِيمَانِ،of faith,إِلَّاexceptأَنَّهُthat he isمُسْلِمٌ،a Muslim,
He said: And it indicates that faith may be negated while Islam remains upon it, and it is by committing the major sins that were mentioned in the report, thus one exits the naming of faith, except that he is a Muslim,
فَإِذَاSo ifتَابَhe repentedمِنْfromذَٰلِكَthatعَادَhe returnsإِلَىtoمَاwhatكَانَhe wasعَلَيْهِupon itمِنَofالإِيمَانِfaithوَلَاand notتَنْتَفِيbe negatedعَنْهُfrom itتَسْمِيَتُهُits namingالإِيمَانَof faithبِارْتِكَابِby committingالصَّغَائِرِthe minor sinsمِنَofالذُّنُوبِ،the sins,بَلْbutالِاسْمُthe nameبَاقٍremainsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,
So if he repents from that, he returns to what he was upon of faith and his naming of faith is not negated by committing minor sins of sins, but the name remains upon him,
ثُمَّThenذَكَرَhe mentionedأَدِلَّةًproofsذَٰلِكَ،of that,وَلَكِنَّbutمَاwhatذَكَرَهُhe mentionedفِيهَاin itأَدِلَّةًproofsكَثِيرَةًmanyعَلَىforمَنْwhoيَقُولُ:says:الإِسْلَامُIslamمُجَرَّدُis merelyكَلِمَةٍ،a word,فَإِنَّfor indeedالأَدِلَّةَthe proofsالْكَثِيرَةَmanyتَدُلُّindicateعَلَىthatالأَعْمَالَthe actionsمِنَare fromالإِسْلَامِ،Islam,بَلْratherالنُّصُوصَthe textsكُلَّهَاallتَدُلُّindicateعَلَىthat.
Then he mentioned proofs of that, but what he mentioned in it are many proofs for those who say: 'Islam is merely a word,' for indeed the many proofs indicate that actions are from Islam, rather all the texts indicate that.
فَمَنْSo whoeverقَالَ:says:إِنَّthatالأَعْمَالُthe actionsالظَّاهِرَةُthat are apparentالمَأْمُورُ بِهَاthat are commandedلَيْسَتْare notمِنَofالإِسْلَامِ،Islam,فَقَوْلُهُthen his statementبَاطِلٌis invalidبِخِلَافِunlikeالتَّصْدِيقِbeliefالَّذِيthat whichفِيis inالْقَلْبِ،the heart,فَإِنَّfor indeedهَذَاthisلَيْسَis notفِيinالنُّصُوصِthe textsمَاwhatيَدُلُّindicatesعَلَىthat it isمِنَofالإِسْلَامِ،Islam,بَلْbutهُوَit isمِنَofالإِيمَانِfaithوَإِنَّمَاand onlyالإِسْلَامُIslamالدِّينُ،is the religion,كَمَاas
So whoever says: 'The actions that are apparent and commanded are not part of Islam,' then his statement is invalid, unlike the belief that is in the heart, for indeed this is not in the texts what indicates that it is of Islam, but rather it is of faith, and Islam is the religion, as
