تَرَدُّدِيI hesitateعَنْaboutقَبْضِtakingنَفْسِthe soulعَبْدِيof My servantالْمُؤْمِنِthe believerيَكْرَهُhatesالْمَوْتَdeathوَأَكْرَهُand I hateمَسَاءَتَهُhis displeasureوَلَاand notبِدًthere is a wayلَهُfor himمِنْهُfrom it

I hesitate about taking the soul of My servant the believer; he hates death and I hate to displease him.

فَأَخْبِرْهُSo informأَنَّهُthat heلَا يَزَالُwill continueيَتَقَرَّبُto draw closerإِلَيْهِto Himبِالنَّوَافِلِwith the supererogatory actsحَتَّىuntilيُحِبَّهُHe loves him

So inform him that he will continue to draw closer to me with supererogatory acts until I love him.

ثُمَّThenقَالَHe saidإِذَاIfأَحْبَبْتُهُI love himكُنْتُI amكَذَاlike thisكُنْتُI amكَذَاlike this

Then He said: If I love him, I am like this, I am like this.

وَهَذَاAnd thisيُبَيِّنُexplainsأَنَّthatحُبَّهُHis loveلِعَبْدِهِfor His servantإِنَّمَاis onlyيَكُونُafterبَعْدَthatأَنْthatيَأْتِيَhe comesبِمَحَابَّهِwith His beloved acts

And this explains that His love for His servant is only after that he comes with His beloved acts.

وَالْقُرْآنُAnd the Quranقَدْhasدَلَّindicatedعَلَىonمِثْلِsuchذَٰلِكَthat

And the Quran has indicated such.

قَالَHe saidتَعَالَىthe Most HighقُلْSayإِنIfكُنتُمْyou areتُحِبُّونَyou loveاللَّهَAllahفَاتَّبِعُونِيthen follow meيُحْبِبْكُمُHe will love youاللَّهُAllah

He said: Say, 'If you love Allah, then follow me, Allah will love you.'

فَقَوْلُهُSo His sayingيُحِبِّكُمُHe will love youجَوَابٌis an answerلِلْأَمْرِto the commandفِيinقَوْلِهِHis sayingفَاتَّبِعُونِيthen follow meوَهُوَAnd it isبِمَنْزِلَةِlikeالْجَزَاءِthe rewardمَعَwithالشَّرْطِthe conditionوَلِهَذَاand for thisجَزَمَit is certain

So His saying, 'He will love you' is an answer to the command in His saying, 'then follow me,' and it is like the reward with the condition, and for this it is certain.

وَهَذَاAnd thisثَوَابٌis a rewardعَمَلِهِمfor their deedsوَهُوَand it isاتِّبَاعٌfollowingالرَّسُولِthe Messenger

And this is a reward for their deeds, and it is following the Messenger.

فَأَثَابَهُمْSo He rewarded themعَلَىforذَٰلِكَthatبِأَنْby loving themأَحَبَّهُمْHe loved them

So He rewarded them for that by loving them.

وَجَزَاءُAnd the rewardالشَّرْطِof the conditionوَثَوَابُand the rewardالْعَمَلِfor the deedوَمُسَبِّبٌand the causeالسَّبَبِof the reasonلَاis notيَكُونُit isإِلَّاexceptبَعْدَهُafter itلَاnotقَبْلَهُbefore it

And the reward of the condition and the reward for the deed and the cause of the reason is not except after it, not before it.

وَهَذَاAnd thisكَقَوْلِهِis like His sayingتَعَالَىthe Most HighادْعُونِيCall upon MeأَسْتَجِبْI will respondلَكُمْto you

And this is like His saying: 'Call upon Me, I will respond to you.'

وَقَوْلُهُAnd His sayingتَعَالَىthe Most Highيَا قَوْمَنَاO our peopleأَجِيبُواAnswerدَاعِيَthe Callerاللَّهِof Allahوَأَامِنُواand believeبِهِin HimيَغْفِرْHe will forgiveلَكُمْfor youمِّنfromذُنُوبِكُمْyour sinsوَيُحَصِّرَكُمand He will protect youمِّنْfromعَذَابٍa punishmentأَلِيمٍpainful

And His saying: 'O our people, answer the Caller of Allah and believe in Him; He will forgive you from your sins and protect you from a painful punishment.'

وَقَوْلُهُAnd His sayingتَعَالَىthe Most HighاتَّقُواFearاللَّهَAllahوَقُولُواand sayقَوْلً سَدِيدًاa word of truthيُصْلِحْHe will rectifyلَكُمْfor youأَعْمَالَكُمْyour deedsوَيَغْفِرْand He will forgiveلَكُمْfor youذُنُوبَكُمْyour sins

And His saying: 'Fear Allah and say a word of truth; He will rectify for you your deeds and forgive you your sins.'

وَمَثَلُAnd similarهَٰذَاto thisكَثِيرٌis manyوَكَذَٰلِكَand likewiseقَوْلُهُHis sayingتَعَالَىthe Most HighفَأَتِمُّواThen fulfillإِلَيْهِمto themعَهْدَهُمْtheir covenantإِلَىtoمُدَّتِهِمtheir termإِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahيُحِبُّlovesالْمُتَّقِينَthe righteous

And similar to this is many; and likewise, His saying: 'Then fulfill to them their covenant to their term; indeed, Allah loves the righteous.'

وَقَوْلُهُAnd His sayingلِمَWhyتَقُولُونَdo you sayمَاwhatلَاnotتَفْعَلُونَyou doكَبُرَis greatمَقْتٌdispleasureعِندَwithاللَّهِAllahأَنْthatتَقُولُواyou sayمَاwhatلَاnotتَفْعَلُونَyou do

And His saying: 'Why do you say what you do not do? Great is the displeasure with Allah that you say what you do not do.'

إِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahيُحِبُّlovesالَّذِينَthose whoيُقَاتِلُونَfightفِيinسَبِيلِهِHis causeصَفًّاin rowsكَأَنَّهُمْas if they areبِنِيَانٍa buildingمَرْصُوصٌwell solidified

Indeed Allah loves those who fight in His cause in rows, as if they are a well solidified building.

وَكَانُواAnd they wereقَدْindeedسَأَلُوهُthey asked himلَوْifعَلِمْنَاwe knewأَيَّwhichالْعَمَلِdeedأَحَبَّis most belovedإِلَىtoاللَّهِAllahلَعَمِلْنَاهُwe would do it

And they were indeed asking him: If we knew which deed is most beloved to Allah, we would do it.

وَقَوْلُهُAnd His sayingإِنَّIndeedالَّذِينَthose whoكَفَرُواdisbelievedيُنَادَوْنَwill be calledلَمَقْتُto the displeasureاللَّهِof Allahأَكْبَرُis greaterمِنْthanمَفْتَكِّكُمْyour killingأَنفُسَكُمْyourselvesإِذْwhenتُدْعَوْنَyou are calledإِلَىtoالإِيمَانِfaithفَتَكْفُرُونَand you disbelieve

And His saying: 'Indeed, those who disbelieved will be called: The displeasure of Allah is greater than your killing yourselves when you are called to faith and you disbelieve.'

فَهَذَاSo thisيَدُلُّindicatesعَلَىthatأَنَّthatحُبَّهُHis love

So this indicates that His love.
