بِسْمِIn the name ofاللَّهِAllahالرَّحْمَـٰنِthe Most Graciousالرَّحِيمِthe Most Merciful
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
الْحَمْدُAll praiseلِلَّهِis due to Allahالَّذِيwhoنَزَّلَrevealedعَلَىٰto Hisعَبْدِهِservantالْكِتَابَthe Bookوَلَمْand did notيَجْعَلْmakeلَهُfor itعِوَجًاany crookedness.
All praise is due to Allah who revealed to His servant the Book and did not make for it any crookedness.
قَيِّمًاStraightلِيُنذِرَto warnبَأْسًاof a severeشَدِيدًاpunishmentمِنْfromلَّدُنَّهُHimوَيُبَشِّرَand to give glad tidingsالْمُؤْمِنِينَto the believersالَّذِينَwhoيَعْمَلُونَdoالصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِrighteous deedsأَنَّthatلَهُمْfor themأَجْرًاis a rewardحَسَنًاgood.)
Straight, to warn of a severe punishment from Him and to give glad tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that for them is a good reward.
نَحْمَدُهُWe praiseتَعَالَىٰHim, the Exaltedوَنُؤْمِنُand we believeبِهِin Him,وَنُثْنِيand we commendعَلَيْهِHimالْخَيْرَfor all goodكُلَّهَاthings,وَنَسْتَعِينُand we seek refugeبِاللَّهِwith Allahمِنْfromشُرُورِthe evilsأَنفُسِنَاof ourselves,,وَمِنْand fromسَيِّـئَاتِthe wrongdoingsأَعْمَالِنَاof our actions.وَنَسْتَفْتِحُAnd we beginبِالَّذِيwith that whichهُوَis good.
We praise Him, the Exalted, and we believe in Him, and we commend Him for all good things, and we seek refuge with Allah from the evils of ourselves, and from the wrongdoings of our actions. And we begin with that which is good.
بَيْنَAmongأَيْدِينَاour handsالْآنَnowكِتَابٌis a bookمَدَارِجُthe stagesالسَّالِكِينَof those who treadبَيْنَbetweenمَنَازِلَthe stationsإِيَّاكَYou aloneنَعْبُدُwe worshipوإِيَّاكَand You aloneنَسْتَعِينُwe ask for help
Among our hands now is a book, the stages of those who tread between the stations, You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help.
لِلْإِمَامِby the Imamالسَّلَفِيِّthe SalafiالْعَلَّامَةِscholarإِبْنِIbnقَيِّمٍQayyimالْجَوْزِيَّةِal-Jawziyyah.
by the Salafi scholar Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah.
وَهُوَAnd it isكِتَابٌa bookيَبْحَثُthat discussesفِيinشُؤُونِmatters ofالْعَقِيدَةِthe creed.
And it is a book that discusses matters of the creed.
وَالْجَدِيرُAnd it is worthبِالذِّكْرِmentioningهُنَاhereأَنَّthatالْعَقِيدَةَthe creedفِيinهَذَاthisالْعَصْرِeraقَدْhasاضْمَحَلَّتْerodedفِيinقُلُوبِthe heartsالْمُسْلِمِينَof Muslimsوَهِيَand it isالْأَصْلُthe foundationالثَّابِتُfirmلِهَذَاfor thisالدِّينِreligion.
And it is worth mentioning here that the creed in this era has eroded in the hearts of Muslims and it is the firm foundation for this religion.
وَبِالْمُحَافَظَةِAnd by preservingعَلَيْهَاitوَبِالْتَّمَسُّكِand by adheringبِأُصُولِهَاto its correct principlesالصَّحِيحَةِيَتَحَقَّقُwe achieveلَنَاfor usرِضْوَانُthe pleasureاللَّهِof Allahتَعَالَىٰthe Exaltedفِيinالدُّنْيَاthis worldوَالْآخِرَةِand the Hereafter,,وَرِضْوَانَهُand His pleasureتَعَالَىٰthe Exaltedهُوَisغَايَةُthe ultimate aimكُلِّof everyمُؤْمِنٍbelieverفِيinهَذَاthisالْكَوْنِuniverse.
And by preserving it and by adhering to its correct principles, we achieve for ourselves the pleasure of Allah the Exalted in this world and the Hereafter, and His pleasure is the ultimate aim of every believer in this universe.
فَهَذَاSo this isهُوَthe ImamإِبْنُIbnقَيِّمٍQayyimالْجَوْزِيَّةِal-Jawziyyahيُبَيِّنُexplainsلَنَاto usمِنْthroughخَلَالِtheالْءَايَاتِversesالْكَرِيمَةِnobleـ-وَالَّتِيwhichكَانَتْwereمُحَوَّرَةًthe axisالْمَوْضُوعِof the topicفِيinكِتَابِهِhis bookهَذَاthisالْمَعَانِيthe meaningsالْحَقِيقِيَّةِtrueلِلْإِيمَانِof faith,وَالأُصُولِand the correctالسَّلِيمَةِprinciplesلِلْعِبَادَةِof worship,حَيْثُwhereجَمَعَهَاhe compiled themبِأُسْلُوبٍin a wonderful styleبَدِيعٍwondrousفِيinسَفَرٍa valuable workنَفِيسٍpreciousأَسْمَاهُhe called itمَدَارِجَThe Stagesالسَّالِكِينَof those who treadفِيinثَلاثٍthreeمَجَلَّدَاتٍvolumes.
So this is the Imam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, who explains to us through the noble verses, which were the axis of the topic in this book, the true meanings of faith, and the correct principles of worship, where he compiled them in a wonderful style in a precious work he called 'The Stages of those who tread' in three volumes.
عَدَدَHe countedإِبْنُIbnالْقَيِّمِQayyimمَنَازِلَthe stationsإِيَّكَYou aloneنَعْبُدُwe worship.وَإِيَّكَAnd You aloneنَسْتَعِينُwe ask for help.وَعَرَفَAnd he definedكُلَّeachمَنْزِلَةٍstationعَلَىseparatelyحَدِّهِindividually.
Ibn Qayyim counted the stations of 'You alone we worship' and 'You alone we ask for help.' And he defined each station separately.
مِثْلَLikeمَنْزِلَةِthe stationالْمَحَبَّةِof loveوَمَنْزِلَةِand the stationالْخَوْفِof fear,وَمَنْزِلَةِand the stationالرَّجَاءِof hope,وَمَنْزِلَةِand the stationالْهِمَّةِof enthusiasmوand
Like the station of love, and the station of fear, and the station of hope, and the station of enthusiasm.
تَحْتَUnderهَذَاthisوَبَيْنَand describesدَرَجَاتِthe levelsكُلِّof eachمَنْزِلَةٍstationمِنْofهَذِهِtheseالْمَنَازِلِstationsوَالاَنْوَاعِand typesالَّتِيthatتَندَرِجُare encompassedتَحْتَunderالْعُنْوَانِthe title.
Under this, he describes the levels of each station of these stations and the types that are encompassed under the title.
كَمَاAsأَتْبَعَهَاhe accompanied itبِفَوَائِدَwith valuable benefitsقَيِّمَةًand importantوَأَبْحَاثٍresearchesجُمْلَةًplentyتُحَدِّدُwhich defineبِمَجْمُوعِهَاin totalالأطُرَthe frameworksالسَّلِيمَةِcorrect.
As he accompanied it with valuable benefits and important researches which define, in total, the correct frameworks.
