وَقَدْAndجَمَعْتُI have collectedالْفَاتِحَةَin Al-Fatihaالْوَسِيلَتَيْنِthe two means
And I have collected in Al-Fatiha the two means,
وَهُمَاand they areالتَّوَسُّلُthe approachبِالْحَمْدِthrough praiseوَالثَّنَاءِand commendationعَلَيْهِupon Him
and they are the approach through praise and commendation upon Him,
وَتَمْجِيدِهِand glorifying Himوَالتَّوَسُّلُand the approachإِلَيْهِto Himبِعَبُودِيَّتِهِthrough His servitudeوَتَوْحِيدِهِand His oneness.
and glorifying Him, and the approach to Him through His servitude and His oneness.
ثُمَّThenجَاءَcomesسُؤَالُthe asking ofأَهَمُّthe most importantالْمَطَالِبِrequests
Then comes the asking of the most important requests,
وَأَنْجَحُand the most successfulالرَّغَائِبِdesiresوَهُوَand it isالْهِدَايَةُguidance.
and the most successful desires, and it is guidance.
بَعْدَAfterالْوَسِيلَتَيْنِthe two means.
After the two means.
فَالدَّاعِيSo the one who supplicatesبِهَاwith itحَقِيقٌis deservingبِالْإِجَابَةِof the response.
So the one who supplicates with it is deserving of the response.
وَنَظِيرُAnd similar toهَذَاthisدُعَاءُis the supplication ofالنَّبِيِّthe Prophetصَلَّىpeaceاللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَbe upon him
And similar to this is the supplication of the Prophet, peace be upon him,
الَّذِيwhoكَانَused toيَدْعُوsupplicateبِهَاwith itإِذَاwhenقَامَhe stoodيُصَلِّيto prayمِنَfromاللَّيْلِthe night.
who used to supplicate with it when he stood to pray at night.
رَوَاهُNarrated itالْبُخَارِيُّAl-Bukhariفِيinصَحِيحِهِhis Sahihمِنْfromحَدِيثِthe narration ofابْنِIbnعَبَّاسٍAbbas.
Narrated it Al-Bukhari in his Sahih from the narration of Ibn Abbas.
اللَّهُمَّO Allahلَكَto Youالْحَمْدُis the praise
O Allah, to You is the praise,
أَنْتَYou areنُورُthe Light ofالسَّمَاوَاتِthe heavensوَالأَرْضِand the earthوَمَنْand whoeverفِيهِنَّis in them.
You are the Light of the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them.
وَلَكَAnd to Youالْحَمْدُis the praise
And to You is the praise,
أَنْتَYou areقَيُّومُthe Sustainer ofالسَّمَاوَاتِthe heavensوَالأَرْضِand the earthوَمَنْand whoeverفِيهِنَّis in them.
You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them.
وَلَكَAnd to Youالْحَمْدُis the praise
And to You is the praise,
أَنْتَYou areالْحَقُّthe Truth
You are the Truth,
وَعَدُكَand Your promiseالْحَقُّis the truth
and Your promise is the truth,
وَلِقَاؤُكَand Your meetingحَقٌّis truth
and Your meeting is truth,
وَالْجَنَّةُand Paradiseحَقٌّis truth
and Paradise is truth,
وَالنَّارُand the Fireحَقٌّis truth
and the Fire is truth,
وَالنَّبِيُّونَand the Prophetsحَقٌّare truth
and the Prophets are truth,
وَالسَّاعَةُand the Hourحَقٌّis truth
and the Hour is truth,
وَمُحَمَّدٌand Muhammadحَقٌّis truth.
and Muhammad is truth.
اللَّهُمَّO Allahلَكَto YouأَسْلَمْتُI have submitted
O Allah, to You I have submitted,
وَبِكَand in YouآمَنْتُI have believed
and in You I have believed,
وَعَلَيْكَand upon YouتَوَكَّلْتُI have relied
and upon You I have relied,
وَإِلَيْكَand to YouأَنَبْتُI have turned in repentance.
and to You I have turned in repentance.
وَبِكَAnd through YouخَاصَمْتُI have contended
And through You I have contended,
وَإِلَيْكَand to YouحَاكَمْتُI have brought my judgment.
and to You I have brought my judgment.
فَاغْفِرْSo forgiveلِيmeمَاwhatقَدَّمْتُI have sent ahead
So forgive me what I have sent ahead,
وَمَاand whatأَخَّرْتُI have delayed
and what I have delayed,
وَمَاand whatأَسْرَرْتُI have concealed
and what I have concealed,
وَمَاand whatأَعْلَنْتُI have made public.
and what I have made public.
أَنْتَYou areإِلَهِيmy God
You are my God,
لَاthere is noإِلَهَdeityإِلَّاexceptأَنْتَYou.
there is no deity except You.
فَذَكَرَSo he mentionedالتَّوَسُّلَthe approachإِلَيْهِto Him
So he mentioned the approach to Him
بِحَمْدِهِthrough His praiseوَالثَّنَاءِand commendationعَلَيْهِupon Him.
through His praise and commendation upon Him.
ثُمَّThenسَأَلَهُhe asked Himالْمَغْفِرَةَfor forgiveness.
Then he asked Him for forgiveness.
