وَكَانَAndيُوسُفُJosephنَبِيًّاwas a prophetمِنَfromالْأَنْبِيَاءِthe prophets.
And Joseph was a prophet among the prophets.
وَكَانَAndالنَّاسُthe peopleفِيinزَمَانِهِhis timeيَعْبُدُونَwere worshippingغَيْرَother thanاللَّهِAllah,
And the people in his time were worshipping other than Allah,
وَوَضَعُواand they set upأَرْبَابًاgodsكَثِيرَةًmanyمِنْfromعِنْدِbesideأَنْفُسِهِمْthemselves,
and they set up many gods from themselves,
وَقَالُواand they said:هَذَاThisرَبُّis the lordالْبَرِّof the land,
and they said: 'This is the lord of the land,
وَهَذَاand thisرَبُّis the lordالْبَحْرِof the sea,
and this is the lord of the sea,
وَهَذَاand thisرَبُّis the lordالرِّزْقِof sustenance,
and this is the lord of sustenance,
وَهَذَاand thisرَبُّis the lordالْمَطَرِof the rain.'
and this is the lord of the rain.'
وَكَانَAndيُوسُفُJosephيَرَىsawكُلَّallذَلِكَthatوَيَضْحَكُand laughed,
And Joseph saw all that and laughed,
وَكَانَandيُوسُفُJosephيَعْلَمُknewكُلَّallذَلِكَthatوَيَبْكِيand cried,
and Joseph knew all that and cried,
وَكَانَandيُوسُفُJosephيُرِيدُwantedأَنْtoيَدْعُوَهُمْcall themإِلَىtoاللَّهِAllah.
and Joseph wanted to call them to Allah.
وَقَدْAnd indeedأَرَادَwilledاللَّهُAllahأَنْthatيَكُونَit beذَلِكَthatفِيinالسِّجْنِthe prison.
And Allah willed that it be in prison.
أَلَاDoes notيَسْتَحِقُّdeserveأَهْلُthe people ofالسِّجْنِthe prisonالْمَوْعِظَةَ؟exhortation?
Do not the people of the prison deserve exhortation?
أَلَاDoes notيَسْتَحِقُّdeserveأَهْلُthe people ofالسِّجْنِthe prisonالرَّحْمَةَ؟mercy?
Do not the people of the prison deserve mercy?
أَلَيْسَAre notأَهْلُthe people ofالسِّجْنِthe prisonعِبَادُservantsاللَّهِ؟of Allah?
Are not the people of the prison servants of Allah?
أَلَيْسَAre notأَهْلُthe people ofالسِّجْنِthe prisonبَنِيsonsآدَمَ؟of Adam?
Are not the people of the prison sons of Adam?
كَانَWasيُوسُفُJosephفِيinالسِّجْنِthe prisonوَلَكِنَّهُand yet heكَانَwasحُرًّاfreeجَرِيئًاand bold.
Joseph was in prison, but he was free and bold.
كَانَWasيُوسُفُJosephفَقِيرًاpoorوَلَكِنَّهُand yet heكَانَwasجَوَادًاgenerousسَخِيًّاand benevolent.
Joseph was poor, but he was generous and benevolent.
إِنَّIndeedالْأَنْبِيَاءَthe prophetsيَجْهَرُونَproclaimبِالْحَقِّthe truthفِيinكُلِّeveryمَكَانٍplace,
Indeed, the prophets proclaim the truth in every place,
إِنَّindeedالْأَنْبِيَاءَthe prophetsيَجُودُونَare generousبِالْخَيْرِwith goodفِيinكُلِّeveryزَمَانٍtime.
indeed the prophets are generous with good in every time.
١٠10––حِكْمَةُThe Wisdomيُوسُفَof Joseph
10 - Wisdom of Joseph
قَالَSaidيُوسُفُJosephفِيtoنَفْسِهِhimself:
Joseph said to himself:
إِنَّIndeedالْحَاجَةَthe needسَاقَتِhas drivenالرَّجُلَيْنِthe two menإِلَيَّto me,
'Indeed, the need has driven the two men to me,
وَإِنَّand indeedصَاحِبَthe one withالْحَاجَةِa needيَلِينُsoftensوَيَخْضَعُand submits,
and indeed the one with a need softens and submits,
وَإِنَّand indeedصَاحِبَthe one withالْحَاجَةِa needيُطِيعُobeysوَيَسْمَعُand listens.'
and indeed the one with a need obeys and listens.'
