وَكَانَAnd wereهَؤُلَاءِtheseالْكَنْعَانِيُّونَCanaanites
And these Canaanites
الَّذِينَwhoكَانُواwereيُدْعَوْنَcalledبَنِيsonsإِسْرَائِيلَof Israel
who were called the children of Israel
أَصْحَابَpossessorsشَرَفٍof honorوَأَمْوَالٍ.and wealth.
possessors of honor and wealth.
وَلَكِنْButتَغَيَّرَتْchangedالْأَحْوَالُthe circumstancesبَعْدَafterذَلِكَ،that,
But the circumstances changed after that,
فَقَدْfor indeedفَسَدَتْcorruptedأَخْلَاقُهُمْtheir moralsوَتَرَكُواand they abandonedالدَّعْوَةَthe callإِلَىtoاللَّهِAllah
for indeed their morals corrupted, and they abandoned the call to Allah,
وَدُعَاءَand callingالْخَلْقِthe creationإِلَىtoاللَّهِ،Allah,وَسَقَطُواand they fellعَلَىuponالدُّنْيَا.the world.
and calling the creation to Allah, and they fell upon the world.
وَتَغَيَّرَAnd changedلَهُمْfor themالنَّاسُthe peopleأَيْضًا،also,وَصَارُواand they becameيَنْظُرُونَlookingإِلَيْهِمْat them
And the people also changed for them, and they began to look at them
بِغَيْرِwith other thanمَاwhatكَانُواthey wereيَنْظُرُونَlookingإِلَىatآبَائِهِمْ.their fathers.
with other than how they used to look at their fathers.
وَصَارُواAnd they becameكَسَائِرِlike the restالنَّاسِ،of the people,لَاnotيَمْتَازُونَdistinguishedعَنِfromالنَّاسِthe peopleإِلَّاexceptبِالنَّسَبِ.by lineage.
And they became like the rest of the people, not distinguished from the people except by lineage.
وَصَارَAnd becameالنَّاسُthe peopleيَحْسُدُونَenvious ofالْغَنِيَّthe richمِنْهُمْamong themوَيَحْتَقِرُونَand contemptuous ofالْفَقِيرَthe poorمِنْهُمْ.among them.
And the people became envious of the rich among them and contemptuous of the poor among them.
وَصَارَAnd becameأَهْلُthe peopleمِصْرَof Egyptيَنْظُرُونَlookingإِلَيْهِمْat themكَغَرِيبٍas a stranger
And the people of Egypt began to look at them as a stranger
جَاءَwho cameمِنْfromبَلَدٍa countryآخَرَ،other,وَلَيْسَand notلَهُfor himحَقٌّa rightفِيinمِصْرَ.Egypt.
who came from another country, and he had no right in Egypt.
وَكَانَAnd wereأَهْلُthe peopleمِصْرَof Egyptيَعْتَقِدُونَbelievingأَنَّهُمْthat theyهُمُareأَهْلُthe peopleالْبِلَادِof the land
And the people of Egypt believed that they were the people of the land
وَأَنَّand thatمِصْرَEgyptلِلْمِصْرِيِّينَ.is for the Egyptians.
and that Egypt was for the Egyptians.
وَيَرَىAnd seesبَعْضُsomeأَهْلِof the peopleمِصْرَof EgyptأَنَّthatيُوسُفَJosephكَانَwasغَرِيبًاa stranger
And some of the people of Egypt see that Joseph was a stranger
جَاءَwho cameمِنْfromكَنْعَانَ،Canaan,وَاشْتَرَاهُand bought himعَزِيزُthe ministerمِصْرَ،of Egypt,
who came from Canaan, and the minister of Egypt bought him,
وَلَيْسَand notلِلْكَنْعَانِيِّfor the Canaaniteأَنْtoيَحْكُمَruleمِصْرَ،Egypt,
and it is not for a Canaanite to rule Egypt,
وَنَسِيَand forgotكَثِيرٌmanyمِنَofالنَّاسِthe peopleفَضْلَthe favorيُوسُفَof Josephوَكَرَمَهُand his generosityوَإِحْسَانَهُ.and his benevolence.
and many of the people forgot Joseph's favor, generosity, and benevolence.
