وَزَاغَتْAnd swervedقُلُوبُهُمْtheir heartsوَفَسَدَand corruptedذَوْقُهُمْtheir taste

And their hearts swerved and their taste corrupted.

وَإِنْAnd ifيَرَوْاthey seeسَبِيلَthe wayالرُّشْدِof guidanceلَاnotيَتَّخِذُوهُthey take itسَبِيلًاas a way.

And if they see the way of guidance, they do not take it as a way.

وَإِنْAnd ifيَرَوْاthey seeسَبِيلَthe wayالْغَيِّof misguidanceيَتَّخِذُوهُthey take itسَبِيلًاas a way.

And if they see the way of misguidance, they take it as a way.

جَازُواThey crossedالْبَحْرَthe seaفَأَتَوْاand cameعَلَىuponقَوْمٍa peopleيَعْكُفُونَwho were devotedعَلَىtoأَصْنَامٍidolsلَهُمْthey had.

They crossed the sea and came upon a people who were devoted to idols they had.

قَالُواThey saidيَاOمُوسَىMosesاجْعَلْmakeلَنَاfor usإِلَهًاa godكَمَاasلَهُمْfor themآلِهَةٌgods.

They said, 'O Moses, make for us a god as for them gods.'

قَالَHe saidإِنَّكُمْIndeed, youقَوْمٌare a peopleتَجْهَلُونَwho are ignorant.

He said, 'Indeed, you are a people who are ignorant.'

يَاOhلَلْعَجَبِthe wonder!يَاOhلِلظُّلْمِthe injustice!إِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahقَدْhasأَنْعَمَbestowed favorعَلَيْكُمْupon youوَفَضَّلَكُمْand preferred youوَآتَاكُمْand given youمَاwhatلَمْnotيُؤْتِHe has givenأَحَدًاanyoneمِنَfromالْعَالَمِينَthe worlds.

Oh, the wonder! Oh, the injustice! Indeed, Allah has bestowed favor upon you and preferred you and given you what He has not given anyone from the worlds.

قَالَHe saidأَغَيْرَOther thanاللَّهِAllahأَبْغِيكُمْshall I seek for youإِلَهًاa godوَهُوَwhile Heفَضَّلَكُمْhas preferred youعَلَىoverالْعَالَمِينَthe worlds?

He said, 'Other than Allah shall I seek for you a god, while He has preferred you over the worlds?'

سَارَWentمُوسَىMosesإِلَىtoالطُّورِthe Mount Sinaiوَغَابَand was absentعَنْهُمْfrom themأَيَّامًاfor daysفَكَانُواand they becameصَيْدَpreyالشَّيْطَانِof Satanوَفَرِيسَةَand quarryالشِّرْكِof polytheism.

Moses went to the Mount Sinai and was absent from them for days, and they became prey of Satan and quarry of polytheism.

قَامَStood upرَجُلٌa manمِنْهُمْamong themيُقَالُcalledلَهُhimالسَّامِرِيُّthe Samaritanفَأَخْرَجَand he brought outلَهُمْfor themعِجْلًاa calfجَسَدًاa bodyلَهُthat hadخُوَارٌa lowing sound.

Stood up a man among them called the Samaritan, and he brought out for them a calf, a body that had a lowing sound.

فَقَالُواSo they saidهَذَاThisإِلَهُكُمْis your godوَإِلَهُand the godمُوسَىof Mosesفَنَسِيَbut he forgot.

So they said, 'This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot.'

وَفُتِنَAnd were temptedبَنُوthe childrenإِسْرَائِيلَof Israelبِهَذَاby thisالْعِجْلِcalfوَخَرُّواand fellعَلَيْهِupon itصُمًّاdeafوَعُمْيَانًاand blind.

And the children of Israel were tempted by this calf, and fell upon it deaf and blind.

أَفَلَاDo they notيَرَوْنَseeأَلَّاthat itيَرْجِعُreturnsإِلَيْهِمْto themقَوْلًاspeechوَلَاand does notيَمْلِكُpossessلَهُمْfor themضَرًّاharmوَلَاnorنَفْعًاbenefit?

Do they not see that it does not return to them any speech and does not possess for them harm nor benefit?

أَلَمْHave they notيَرَوْاseenأَنَّهُthat itلَاdoes notيُكَلِّمُهُمْspeak to themوَلَاnorيَهْدِيهِمْguide themسَبِيلًاa way?

Have they not seen that it does not speak to them nor guide them a way?

وَنَهَاهُمُAnd forbade themهَارُونُAaronعَنْfromذَلِكَthatوَاجْتَهَدَand strivedوَقَالَand said

And Aaron forbade them from that and strived, and said:

يَاOقَوْمِmy peopleإِنَّمَاonlyفُتِنْتُمْyou have been temptedبِهِby itوَإِنَّand indeedرَبَّكُمُyour Lordالرَّحْمَنُis the Most Graciousفَاتَّبِعُونِيso follow meوَأَطِيعُواand obeyأَمْرِيmy command.

'O my people, you have only been tempted by it, and indeed your Lord is the Most Gracious, so follow me and obey my command.'
