فَقَالَSo he saidلَهُto himفَتَاهُhis young man

So his young man said to him

قَالَHe saidأَرَءَيْتَHave you seenإِذْwhenأَوَيْنَاwe took shelterإِلَىtoالصَّخْرَةِthe rock

He said: Have you seen when we took shelter to the rock

فَإِنِّيthen indeed Iنَسِيتُforgotالْحُوتَthe fish

then indeed I forgot the fish.

قَالَSaidمُوسَىMoses

Moses said

ذَلِكَThatمَاis whatكُنَّاwe wereنَبْغِيseeking

That is what we were seeking.

فَارْتَدَّاSo they returnedعَلَىonآثَارِهِمَاtheir tracksقَصَصًاrecounting.

So they returned on their tracks, recounting.

لَاNo

No.

فَلَمَّاAnd whenانْتَهَيَاthey reachedإِلَىtoالصَّخْرَةِthe rock

And when they reached the rock

إِذَاloرَجُلٌa manمُسَجًّىcoveredبِثَوْبٍwith a garment

lo, a man covered with a garment.

فَسَلَّمَso he greetedمُوسَىMoses

So Moses greeted him.

فَقَالَAnd he saidالْخَضِرُAl-Khidr

And Al-Khidr said

وَأَنَّىAnd howبِأَرْضِكَin your landالسَّلَامُis peace

And how is peace in your land?

فَقَالَHe saidأَنَاIمُوسَىam Moses

He said: I am Moses!

فَقَالَHe saidمُوسَىMosesبَنِيof the Childrenإِسْرَائِيلَof Israel

He said: Moses of the Children of Israel?

قَالَHe saidنَعَمْYes

He said: Yes!

قَالَSaidلَهُto himمُوسَىMoses

Moses said to him

هَلْWillأَتَّبِعُكَI follow youعَلَىupon condition thatأَنْthatتُعَلِّمَنِyou teach meمِمَّاof whatعُلِّمْتَyou have been taughtرُشْدًاof sound guidance

Will I follow you upon condition that you teach me of what you have been taught of sound guidance?

قَالَHe saidإِنَّكَIndeed youلَنْwill notتَسْتَطِيعَbe ableمَعِيwith meصَبْرًاpatience

He said: Indeed you will not be able to endure patience with me

يَاOمُوسَىMoses

O Moses!

إِنِّيIndeed Iعَلَىam uponعِلْمٍa knowledgeمِنْfromعِلْمِknowledgeاللَّهِof Allah

Indeed I am upon a knowledge from the knowledge of Allah

عَلَّمَنِيهِHe taught me itلَاthat youتَعْلَمُهُdo not know itأَنْتَyou

which He taught me, that you do not know.

وَأَنْتَAnd youعَلَىare uponعِلْمٍa knowledgeعَلَّمَكَهُHe taught you itاللَّهُAllah

And you are upon a knowledge which Allah has taught you

لَاthat Iأَعْلَمُهُdo not know it

that I do not know!

قَالَSaidمُوسَىMoses

Moses said

سَتَجِدُنِيYou will find meإِنْifشَاءَwillsاللَّهُAllahصَابِرًاpatient

You will find me, if Allah wills, patient

وَلَاand I will notأَعْصِيdisobeyلَكَyouأَمْرًاa command

and I will not disobey you a command.

فَانْطَلَقَاSo they set offيَمْشِيَانِwalkingعَلَىonسَاحِلِthe shoreالْبَحْرِof the sea

So they set off, walking on the shore of the sea

لَيْسَthere was notلَهُمَاfor themسَفِينَةٌa ship

there was not for them a ship.

فَمَرَّتْAnd there passedبِهِمَاby themسَفِينَةٌa ship

And there passed by them a ship

فَكَلَّمُوهُمْso they spoke to themأَنْthatيَحْمِلُوهُمَاthey carry them

so they spoke to them that they carry them.

فَعَرَفَso he recognizedالْخِضْرُAl-Khidrفَحَمَلُوهُمَاso they carried themبِغَيْرِwithoutأُجْرَةٍfare

So Al-Khidr recognized them, so they carried them without fare.

فَجَاءَThen cameعُصْفُورٌa birdفَوَقَعَand perchedعَلَىonحَرْفِthe edgeالسَّفِينَةِof the ship

Then a bird came and perched on the edge of the ship

فَنَقَرَso it peckedنَقْرَةًa peckأَوْorنَقْرَتَيْنِtwo pecksمِنَfromالْبَحْرِthe sea

and it pecked a peck or two from the sea.

فَقَالَso he saidالْخِضْرُAl-KhidrيَاOمُوسَىMoses

So Al-Khidr said: O Moses

مَاwhatنَقَصَhas diminishedعِلْمِيmy knowledgeوَعِلْمُكَand your knowledgeمِنْfromعِلْمِknowledgeاللَّهِof Allah

what has diminished my knowledge and your knowledge from the knowledge of Allah

إِلَّاexceptكَنَقْرَةِlike the peckهَذَاof thisالْعُصْفُورِbirdفِيinالْبَحْرِthe sea

except like the peck of this bird in the sea.
