تَحَدَّثَtalkedجِيمJimعَنِaboutالسَّرَايَاthe palacesالْأُخْرَىthe other

Jim talked about the other palaces and the battles he heard about, then Henry asked him what their battalion might do.

وَعَنِand aboutالْمَعَارِكِthe battlesالَّتِيthatسَمِعَhe heardعَنْهَاabout it

and about the battles that he heard about,

ثُمَّthenسَأَلَهُasked himهنريHenryعَمَّاabout whatقَدْmightتَفْعَلُهُdo itكَتِيبَتُهُمَاtheir battalion

then Henry asked him about what their battalion might do.

قَالَSaidجِيمJimفِيinهُدُوءٍcalmness

Jim said calmly:

أَظُنُّI thinkأَنَّهُمْthat theyسَيَبْلُونَwill endureبَلَاءًa trialحَسَنًاgood

I think that they will endure a good trial

إِذَاifيَحْتَدِمُintensifiesالْقِتَالُthe fighting

if the fighting intensifies.

يَسْخَرُMocksمِنْهُمُfrom themالْجَمِيعُeveryoneلِأَنَّهُمْbecause theyحَدِيثُوrecentالْعَهْدِeraبِالْقِتَالِto fighting

Everyone mocks them because they are recent to fighting,

لَكِنَّهُمْbut theyسَيُبْلُونَwill displayبَلَاءًdeedsحَسَنًاgood

but they will display good deeds.

سَأَلَهُHe asked himهنريHenry

Henry asked him:

هَلْDoتَظُنُّyou thinkأَنَّthatأَيًّاanyمِنَofالصِّبْيَةِthe childrenسَيَلُوذُwill fleeبِالْفِرَارِto escape

"Do you think any of the children will flee to escape?"

قَالَSaidجِيمJimرُبَّمَاperhapsيُقْدِمُmay advanceقَلِيلُونَfewعَلَىuponذَلِكَthat

Jim said: 'Perhaps few may advance upon that;

فَتِلْكَfor thatالْفِئَةُgroupمَوْجُودَةٌexistsفِيinكُلِّeveryكَتِيبَةٍbattalion

for that group exists in every battalion,

خَاصَّةًespeciallyعِنْدَمَاwhenيُشَارِكُونَthey participateفِيinالْقِتَالِthe battleأَوَّلَfirstمَرَّةٍtime

especially when they participate in the battle for the first time.

لَاNotيُمْكِنُكَyou canالْمُرَاهَنَةُbetعَلَىonشَيْءٍsomething

You cannot bet on something,

لَكِنْbutأَعْتَقِدُI believeأَنَّهُمْthat theyسَيُقَاتِلُونَwill fightأَفْضَلَbetterمِنَthanالْبَعْضِsome

but I believe that they will fight better than some

وَأَسْوَأَand worseمِنْthanآخَرِينَothers.

and worse than others.

سَأَلَهُHe asked himهنريHenry

Henry asked him:

هَلْDidفَكَّرْتَyou thinkأَنَّكَthat youأَنْتَyourselfنَفْسَكَpersonallyرُبَّمَاmightتَفِرُّfleeمِنَfromالْمَعْرَكَةِthe battleيَاOجِيمJim

"Did you think that you yourself might flee from the battle, Jim?"

ثُمَّThenضَحِكَhe laughedكَمَاas ifلَوْifكَانَhe wasيَمْزَحُjoking

Then he laughed as if he were joking;

إِذْsinceلَمْhe did notيُرِيدُwantأَنْtoيُغْضِبَangerصَدِيقَهُhis friend.

since he did not want to anger his friend.

قَالَSaidجِيمJim

Jim said:

حَسَنًاOkayفَكَّرْتُI thoughtفِيthatأَنَّthe battleالْمَعْرَكَةَmightقَدْintensifyتَحْتَدِمُa lotكَثِيرًاa lot

"Okay, I thought that the battle might intensify a lot,

وَإِذَاand ifفَرَّfleesعَدَدٌa numberكَبِيرٌlargeمِنَfromالْفِتْيَةِthe youth

and if a large number of the youths flee,

فَسَأَفِرُّthen I will fleeأَنَاIالْآخَرُtoo

then I will flee as well,

وَعِنْدَمَاand whenأَفْعَلُI doسَأَجْرِيI will runبِأَقْصَىwith maximumقُوَّتِيmy power.

and when I do, I will run with all my power.

لَكِنْButإِذَاifصَمَدَpersistsالْجَمِيعُeveryoneوَقَاتَلُواand fights

But if everyone persists and fights,

فَسَوْفَthenأَصْمُدُI will persistوَأُقَاتِلُand fightأُرَاهِنُI betعَلَىonذَلِكَthat.

then I will persist and fight. I bet on that.

شَعَرَFeltهنريHenryبِالسَّعَادَةِhappyلِسَمَاعِهِfor hearingهَذِهِtheseالْكَلِمَاتِwords

Henry felt happy for hearing these words;

فَقَدْforظَنَّhe thoughtأَنَّthatجَمِيعَallالرِّجَالِthe menالْآخَرِينَothers

he thought that all the other men

مِمَّنْwhoلَاdo notيَمْتَلِكُونَpossessالْخِبْرَةَexperienceيَثِقُونَtrustبِأَنْفُسِهِمْin themselvesتَمَامَcompleteالثِّقَةِconfidence

who do not possess experience trust in themselves completely,

أَمَّاbutالْآنَnowوَبَعْدَand afterأَنْthatعَرَفَhe learnedالْحَقِيقَةَthe truth

but now, after learning the truth,

شَعَرَhe feltبِأَنَّهُthat heفِيinحَالٍa stateأَفْضَلَbetterقَلِيلًاslightly.

he felt that he was in a slightly better state.

The second chapter

مَخَاوِفُFears ofهنريHenry

Henry's Fears

فِيInالصَّبَاحِthe morningالتَّالِيnextاكْتَشَفَdiscoveredهنريHenry

In the next morning, Henry discovered

أَنَّthatجِيمJimكَانَwasمُخْطِئًاwrong

that Jim was wrong;

إِذْforلَمْdid notيَكُنْbeهُنَاكَthereقِتَالٌfightingفِيonهَذَاthisالْيَوْمِday.

for there was no fighting on this day.

سَخِرَMockedكَثِيرٌmanyمِنَofالرِّجَالِthe menالْآخَرِينَothersمِنْfromجِيمJim

Many of the other men mocked Jim,

حَتَّىuntilإِنَّهُheدَخَلَenteredفِيintoعِرَاكٍa scuffleبِالْأَيْدِيwith fists

until he entered into a fist scuffle

مَعَwithرَجُلٍa manمِنْfromتِشَاتْفِيلْدCheatfieldكُورْنِرزCorners.

with a man from Cheatfield Corners.

تَشَاجَرَQuarreledوِلْسُونWilsonالْجُنْدِيُّthe soldierعَالِيloudالصَّوْتِvoice

Wilson the loud-voiced soldier quarreled

هُوَheالْآخَرُtooوَكَانَand wasعَلَىonالْمُلَازِمِthe sergeantفَضُّresolvingذَلِكَthatالشِّجَارِbrawl.

as well, and the sergeant was resolving that brawl.

فِيInغُضُونِthe meantimeذَلِكَthatكَانَwasهنريHenryلَاnotيَزَالُstillغَيْرَnotوَاثِقٍconfidentمِنْofنَفْسِهِhimself.

In the meantime, Henry was still not confident of himself.

ظَلَّRemainedهنريHenryأَيَّامًاdaysيُفَكِّرُthinkingفِيaboutهَذَاthisالْأَمْرِmatter.

Henry remained days thinking about this matter.

كَانَHe wasلَاnotيَزَالُstillقَلِقًاrestlessمِنْfromأَنَّهُthat heسَيَفِرُّwill flee

He was still restless that he would flee

مَعَwithأَوَّلِthe firstبَادِرَةٍopportunityلِلْقِتَالِfor the fight.

at the first opportunity for the fight.

وَأَخِيرًاAnd finallyقَرَّرَhe decidedأَنَّthatالطَّرِيقَةَthe wayالْوَحِيدَةَthe onlyلِإِثْبَاتِto proveقُدْرَاتِهِhis abilities

And finally, he decided that the only way to prove his abilities

هِيَisدُخُولُenteringسَاحَةِthe arenaالْوَغَىof battle.

is entering the arena of battle.

عَلَيْهِHe mustأَنْtoيَنْتَظِرَwaitلِيَرَىto seeهَلْifسَيُحَارِبُhe will fightحَقًّاreallyأَمْorلَاnot.

He must wait to see if he will really fight or not.

لِذَلِكَThereforeظَلَّhe keptيَنْتَظِرُwaitingالْفُرْصَةَthe opportunity

Therefore, he kept waiting for the opportunity,

وَحَاوَلَand triedأَنْtoيُقَارِنَcompareنَفْسَهُhimselfبِرِفَاقِهِwith his companions.

and tried to compare himself with his companions.
