كَانَwasهنريHenryوَوِيلْسُونَand Wilsonيَتَشَاجَرَانِarguingعَلَىoverالرَّايَةِ،the flag,وَكِلَاهُمَاand both of themيُرِيدُwantingحَمْلَهَا.to carry it.
Henry and Wilson were arguing over the flag, and both of them wanting to carry it.
وَأَخِيرًاAnd finallyدَفَعَpushedهنريHenryوِيلْسُونَWilsonبَعِيدًا.away.
And finally pushed Henry Wilson away.
عَادَتِreturnedالْكَتِيبَةُthe battalionمَرَّةًonceأُخْرَىagainإِلَىtoالْأَشْجَارِ،the trees,
The battalion returned once again to the trees,
وَعِنْدَمَاand whenوَصَلُواthey arrivedإِلَىatالْمَكَانِthe placeالْمَفْتُوحِopenالَّذِيthatبَدَءُواthey startedمِنْهُ،from it,
and when they arrived at the open place that they started from,
بَدَاit seemedأَنَّthatمَجْمُوعَاتٍgroupsمِنْofجُنُودِsoldiersالْعَدُوِّthe enemyتُحِيطُsurroundingبِهِمْthemمِنْfromكُلِّeveryجَانِبٍ،side,
it seemed that groups of enemy soldiers surrounding them from every side,
وَتَمَلَّكَand took overالذُّهُولُdazeوَالْيَأْسُand despairالْكَثِيرِينَ.the many.
and daze and despair took over the many.
وَاصَلَcontinuedهنريHenryالتَّقَدُّمَadvancingتَعْلُوrisingوَجْهَهُhis faceنَظْرَةٌa lookغَاضِبَةٌ.angry.
Henry continued advancing, an angry look rising on his face.
كَانَHe wasغَاضِبًاangryلِأَنَّbecauseالضَّابِطَthe officerقَالَsaidعَنْهُمْabout themإِنَّهُمْthat theyرَاكِبُوare riders ofبِغَالٍ،mules,
He was angry because the officer said about them that they are riders of mules,
وَكَانَand he wasأَكْثَرَmoreغَضَبًاangryلِأَنَّهُمُbecause theyاضْطُرُّواwere forcedلِلِانْسِحَابِ.to retreat.
and he was more angry because they were forced to retreat.
شَعَرَHe feltبِالْكَرَاهِيَةِhatredتِجَاهَtowardالضَّابِطِthe officerالَّذِيwhoلَمْdid notيَكُنْevenحَتَّىuntilيَعْرِفُهُ،know him,
He felt hatred toward the officer who did not even know him until then,
لَكِنَّهُbut heنَعَتَهُdescribed himبِذَلِكَ.with that.
but he described him with that.
أَرَادَwantedهنريHenryأَنْtoتَنْتَصِرَwinكَتِيبَتُهُhis battalionفِيinتِلْكَthatالْمَوْقِعَةِbattlefield
Henry wanted his battalion to win in that battlefield
لِيَعُودَto returnإِلَىtoذَلِكَthatالضَّابِطِofficerوَيَقُولَand sayلَهُ:to him:
to return to that officer and say to him:
«نَحْنُ"Weرَاكِبُوare riders ofبِغَالٍ،mules,أَلَيْسَis it notكَذَلِكَ؟»so?"
"We are riders of mules, is it not so?"
لَكِنَّهُBut heالْآنَnowيُدْرِكُrealizesأَنَّthatالنَّصْرَvictoryلَنْwill notيَكُونَbeحَلِيفَهُمْ،their ally,
But he now realizes that victory will not be their ally,
وَأَنَّand thatعَلَيْهِhe mustالتَّخَلِّيَgive upعَنْhisأَحْلَامِهِdreamsبِالثَّأْرِof vengeanceمِنَfromالضَّابِطِ.the officer.
and that he must give up his dreams of vengeance from the officer.
انْتَبَهَnoticedهنريHenryإِلَىhisكِبْرِيَائِهِprideوَظَلَّand continuedيَرْفَعُraisingالرَّايَةَthe flagعَالِيًا.high.
Henry noticed his pride and continued raising the flag high.
صَرَخَShoutedهُوَheوَالْمُلَازِمُand the lieutenantفِيatالْجُنُودِthe soldiersلِيُوَاصِلُواto continueالْقِتَالَ،the fight,
He and the lieutenant shouted at the soldiers to continue the fight,
لَكِنَّbutالْجُنُودَthe soldiersكَانُواwereأَشْبَهَsimilarبِآلَاتٍto machinesمُعَطَّلَةٍ.broken.
but the soldiers were similar to broken machines.
عَجَزَWere unableالْكَثِيرُونَmanyمِنْهُمْof themعَنْtoمُوَاصَلَةِcontinueالْقِتَالِthe fightبَعْدَafterأَنْthatرَأَوْاthey sawزُمَلَاءَهُمْtheir comradesيَسْقُطُونَfallingقَتْلَىdeadوَجَرْحَى.and wounded.
Many of them were unable to continue the fight after they saw their comrades falling dead and wounded.
انْتَشَرَSpreadالدُّخَانُthe smokeفِيinكُلِّeveryمَكَانٍ،place,
The smoke spread in every place,
وَمَعَand withحُدُوثِthe occurrence ofانْقِسَامٍa divisionمُفَاجِئٍsuddenفِيinإِحْدَىone ofالسُّحُبِ،the clouds,
and with the occurrence of a sudden division in one of the clouds,
رَأَىsawهنريHenryمَجْمُوعَةًa groupمِنْofجُنُودِsoldiersالْعَدُوِّ.the enemy.
Henry saw a group of enemy soldiers.
كَانُواThey wereيَصِيحُونَshoutingوَيُقَاتِلُونَand fightingبَيْنَمَاwhileكَتِيبَةُbattalionهنريHenryتَتَقَهْقَرُ.is retreating.
They were shouting and fighting while Henry's battalion is retreating.
بَدَتِAppearedالْمَعْرَكَةُthe battleوَكَأَنَّهَاas if itسَتَسْتَمِرُّwill continueإِلَىtoالْأَبَدِ.eternity.
The battle appeared as if it will continue to eternity.
فَقَدَLostالْكَثِيرُmanyمِنَofالْجُنُودِthe soldiersصَوَابَهُمْtheir composureمِنْfromهَوْلِthe horror ofالْمَوْقِعِ،the situation,
Many of the soldiers lost their composure from the horror of the situation,
وَأَصْبَحُواand they becameلَاnotيُمَيِّزُونَdistinguishingمَكَانَthe location ofالْعَدُوِّthe enemyأَوْorمَصْدَرَthe source ofالطَّلَقَاتِ.the fire.
and they became not distinguishing the location of the enemy or the source of the fire.
كَانُواThey wereيَفِرُّونَfleeingفِيinجَمِيعِallالِاتِّجَاهَاتِdirectionsبَحْثًاsearchingعَنْforمَكَانٍa placeلِلْهَرَبِ،to escape,
They were fleeing in all directions searching for a place to escape,
وَأَثْنَاءَand duringهَذَاthisكُلِّهِallيَتَسَاقَطُwere fallingالْقَتْلَىthe deadمِنْfromحَوْلِهِمْ.around them.
and during all of this were falling the dead from around them.
سَارَWalkedهنريHenryبِخُطًىwith stepsوَاثِقَةٍconfidentوَسْطَamidstالْجُنُودِ،the soldiers,
Henry walked with confident steps amidst the soldiers,
وَرَفَعَand raisedالْرَّايَةَthe flagعَالِيًا.high.
and raised the flag high.
بَدَاIt seemedوَكَأَنَّهُas if heتَوَقَّعَexpectedأَنْthatيَدْفَعَهُwould push himأَحَدٌsomeoneأَرْضًا،to the ground,
It seemed as if he expected that would push him someone to the ground,
فَكَانَso he wasيَسْتَخْدِمُusingالرَّايَةَthe flagلِتُسَاعِدَهُto help himعَلَىtoالصُّمُودِ.stand firm.
so he was using the flag to help him to stand firm.
وَمِنْAndدُونِwithoutأَنْthatيَنْتَبِهَ،he noticed,
And without that he noticed,
كَانَhe wasوَاقِفًاstandingكَالْأَبْطَالِlike the heroesالَّذِينَwhoرَآهُمْhe saw themوَتَخَيَّلَهُمْ.and imagined them.
he was standing like the heroes who he saw them and imagined them.
اقْتَرَبَApproachedمِنْهُhimوِيلْسُونُWilsonوَقَالَand saidأَعْتَقِدُI believeأَنَّهَاthat it isالنِّهَايَةُthe endيَاOهنري.Henry.
Approached him Wilson and said I believe that it is the end O Henry.
رَدَّRepliedهنريHenryدُونَwithoutأَنْthatيَنْظُرَhe lookإِلَىatصَدِيقِهِ:his friend:
Replied Henry without that he look at his friend:
«اصْمُتْ"Shut upأَيُّهَاOالْأَحْمَقُ!»fool!"
"Shut up O fool!"
حَاوَلَTriedالضُّبَّاطُthe officersتَوْزِيعَto distributeالْجُنُودِthe soldiersفِيinدَائِرَةٍa circleحَتَّىuntilيَسْتَطِيعُواthey canمُوَاجَهَةَconfrontالْعَدُوِّthe enemyالَّذِيwhoيَقْتَرِبُ.is approaching.
Tried the officers to distribute the soldiers in a circle until they can confront the enemy who is approaching.
كَانَتِWasالْأَرْضُthe landغَيْرَnotمُسْتَوِيَةٍlevelوَمُشَقَّقَةٍ.and cracked.
Was the land not level and cracked.
وَتَسَلَّلَAnd sneakedالْجُنُودُthe soldiersدَاخِلَinsideالْخَنَادِقِthe trenchesمُحَاوِلِينَtryingالِاخْتِبَاءَto hideخَلْفَbehindأَيِّanyشَيْءٍthingقَدْmightيَصُدُّblockعَنْهُمُfrom themالطَّلَقَاتِ.the bullets.
And sneaked the soldiers inside the trenches trying to hide behind any thing might block from them the bullets.
