رَفْرَفَتْFlutteredرَايَةُthe bannerالْمَعْرَكَةِof the battleبَعِيدًاfar awayفِيinجُنُونٍmadnessوَكَأَنَّهَاand as if itتُكَافِحُfightsلِتَحْرِيرِto liberateنَفْسِهَاitself

The banner of the battle fluttered far away in madness, as if it is fighting to liberate itself.

امْتَلَأَFilledالدُّخَانُthe smokeالدَّائِرُswirlingفِيinالْهَوَاءِthe airبِوَمَضَاتٍwith flashesأُفُقِيَّةٍhorizontalوَظَهَرَand appearedعَبْرَهُthrough itرِجَالٌmenيَهْرُبُونَescapingبِسُرْعَةٍquicklyمِنَfromالْقِتَالِthe battle

The smoke filled the air with horizontal flashes, and through it appeared men escaping quickly from the battle.

ثُمَّthenازْدَادَincreasedعَدَدُهُمْtheir numberحَتَّىuntilبَدَاit seemedوَكَأَنَّas ifالْكَتِيبَةَthe battalionكُلَّهَاall of itتَلُوذُwas taking refugeبِالْفِرَارِin flight

then their number increased until it seemed as if the entire battalion was taking refuge in flight.

وَانْخَفَضَAnd loweredالْعَلَمُthe flagوَكَأَنَّهُas if itيُحْتَضَرُwere dyingوَبَدَتْand appearedحَرَكَتُهُits movementوَهُوَwhile itيُنَكَّسُwas being loweredإِشَارَةًas a signلِلْيَأْسِof despair

And the flag lowered as if it were dying, and its movement appeared as it was being lowered, a sign of despair.

شَعَرَFeltهِنْرِيHenryبِالذُّعْرِwith panicمِنَfromالنَّظَرَاتِthe glancesالَّتِيthatعَلَتْrose onوُجُوهَthe faces ofالْفَارِّينَthe fugitives

Henry felt panic from the glances that rose on the faces of the fugitives,

شَعَرَhe feltأَنَّهُthat heلَاnoشَيْءَthingفِيinالْعَالَمِthe worldقَدْcouldيَمْنَعُهُprevent himمِنَfromالْفِرَارِfleeingإِذَاifلَاحَتْappearedلَهُto himالْفُرْصَةُthe opportunity

he felt that there was nothing in the world that could prevent him from fleeing if the opportunity appeared to him,

لَكِنَّbutكَانَit wasعَلَىuponالرِّجَالِthe menفِيinوَحْدَتِهِtheir unitالتَّشَبُّثُto clingبِمَوَاقِعِهِمْto their positions

but it was upon the men in their unit to cling to their positions.

وَقَفُواThey stoodجَنْبًاsideإِلَىtoجَنْبٍsideيَرْتَعِشُونَshiveringوَيَزْدَادُونَand growingشُحُوبًاpale

They stood side by side, shivering and growing pale.

جَالَتْWanderedبِخَاطِرِin the mind ofهِنْرِيHenryفِكْرَةٌa thoughtوَحِيدَةٌsingleفِيinخِضَمِّthe midst ofتِلْكَthatالْفَوْضَىchaos

A single thought wandered in Henry's mind in the midst of that chaos;

فَالْوَحْشُthe beastالَّذِيwhichتَسَبَّبَcausedفِيinفِرَارِthe flight ofالْوَحَدَاتِthe unitsالْأُخْرَىotherلَمْnotيَظْهَرْappearedبَعْدُyet

the beast which caused the flight of other units has not appeared yet.

وَقَرَّرَAnd decidedهِنْرِيHenryأَنْtoيَتَرَقَّبَهُwatch for himظَنًّاthinkingأَنَّهُthat heلَوِifاسْتَطَاعَcouldفِعْلَdoذَلِكَthatسَيَكُونُhe would beقَادِرًاcapableعَلَىofالْفِرَارِescapingأَسْرَعَfasterمِنْthanأَيِّanyشَخْصٍpersonآخَرَelse

And Henry decided to watch for him, thinking that if he could do that, he would be capable of escaping faster than any other person.

Chapter the Sixth

الطَّلْقَةُThe firstالْأُولَىshot

The first shot

كَانَتْThere wereهُنَاكَthereلَحَظَاتُmomentsانْتِظَارٍof waitingكَثِيرَةٌmany

There were many moments of waiting,

وَتَذَكَّرَand rememberedهِنْرِيHenryالشَّارِعَthe streetفِيinمَدِينَتِهِhis cityعِنْدَمَاwhenكَانَwasالْجَمِيعُeveryoneيَنْتَظِرُونَwaiting forقُدُومَthe arrival ofمَوْكِبِthe procession ofالسِّيرْكِthe circusفِيinالرَّبِيعِthe spring

and Henry remembered the street in his city when everyone was waiting for the arrival of the procession of the circus in the spring.

صَاحَShoutedأَحَدُهُمْone of themفَجْأَةًsuddenlyهَاhereقَدْindeedأَتَوْاthey have come

One of them suddenly shouted, 'Here they have come!'

سَرَتْMovedغَمْغَمَاتٌmurmursوَهَمْهَمَاتٌand whispersبَيْنَamongالرِّجَالِthe menالَّذِينَwhoسَحَبُواpulledصَنَادِيقَboxes ofالرَّصَاصِbulletsبِالْقُرْبِnearمِنْهُمْto themوَغَيَّرُواand changedمَوَاقِعَهُمْtheir positionsفِيwithحَذَرٍcautionبَالِغٍextreme

Murmurs and whispers moved among the men who pulled boxes of bullets near to them, and changed their positions with extreme caution.

هَاAhقَدْindeedأَتَوْاthey have comeوَتَحَرَّكَتْand movedأَزْنُدُthe arms ofالْبَنَادِقِthe rifles

"Ah, indeed they have come!" and the arms of the rifles moved.

عَبْرَAcrossالْحَقْلِthe fieldالْمُغَطَّىcoveredبِالدُّخَانِwith smokeظَهَرَappearedسِرْبٌa groupمِنَofالرِّجَالِmenفِيinزِيِّهِمُtheir outfitsالرَّمَادِيِّgrayيَصِيحُونَshoutingبِأَصْوَاتٍwith voicesمُرْتَفِعَةٍloudصَاخِبَةٍnoisy

Across the field covered with smoke, a group of men appeared in their gray outfits, shouting with loud, noisy voices.

عِنْدَمَاWhenرَآهُمْhe saw themهِنْرِيHenryارْتَبَكَpanickedفَجْأَةًsuddenlyمِنْfromفِكْرَةِthe thoughtأَنَّthatبُنْدُقِيَّتَهُhis gunرُبَّمَاperhapsلَاnotتَكُونُmight beمَحْشُوَّةًloadedبِالرَّصَاصِwith bullets

When Henry saw them, he panicked suddenly from the thought that his gun might not be loaded with bullets.

حَاوَلَHe triedأَنْtoيَتَذَكَّرَrememberمَتَىwhenحَشَاهَاhe loaded itلَكِنَّهُbut heكَانَwasمُرْتَبِكًاconfusedلِلْغَايَةِextremely

He tried to remember when he loaded it, but he was extremely confused.

سَحَبَPulledجِنْرَالٌa generalلَاnotيَرْتَدِيwearingقُبَّعَةًa hatجَوَادَهُhis horseلِيَقِفَto standبِجِوَارِnext toالْعَقِيدِthe captainالَّذِيwhoيَرْأَسُheadsكَتِيبَةَthe battalion ofهِنْرِيHenryوَلَوَّحَand he wavedبِقَبْضَةِwith the fist ofيَدِهِhis handفِيinوَجْهِthe face ofالْعَقِيدِthe captain

A general not wearing a hat pulled his horse to stand next to the captain who heads Henry's battalion, and he waved his fist in the face of the captain.

صَاحَShoutedاللِّوَاءُthe generalمُحْتَدًّاangrilyكَانَit wasعَلَيْكَupon youرَدْعُهُمْto stop themكَانَit wasعَلَيْكَupon youرَدْعُهُمْto stop them

The general shouted angrily: "You should have stopped them! You should have stopped them!"

وَسْطَAmidstشُعُورِthe feelingالْعَقِيدِof the captainبِالِارْتِبَاكِwith confusionبَدَأَhe beganيَتَحَدَّثُto speakمُتَلَعْثِمًاstammering

Amidst the captain's feeling of confusion, he began to speak stammering.

حَسَنًاOkayيَاOجِنْرَالُGeneralسَweوَدْwillفَنَفْعَلُdoمَاwhatفِيis inوُسْعِنَاour capacityيَاOجِنْرَالُGeneral

Okay, O General! We will do what is in our capacity, O General.

أَوْمَأَGesturedالْجِنْرَالُthe generalإِيمَاءَةًwith a gestureمَمْزُوجَةًmixedبِالْغَضَبِwith angerوَقَادَand ledالْجَوَادَthe horseمُبْتَعِدًاaway

The general gestured with a gesture mixed with anger, and led the horse away.

غَمْغَمَMutteredأَحَدُone ofالرِّجَالِthe menبِالْقُرْبِnearمِنْtoهِنْرِيHenryلَقَدْindeedحَانَhas comeالْوَقْتُthe timeلَقَدْindeedحَانَhas comeالْوَقْتُthe time

One of the men muttered near to Henry: "Indeed, the time has come! Indeed, the time has come!"
