About the Prophet, peace be upon him, he said: "None of you will enter the Paradise by his deeds." They said, nor you, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "Nor I, except that God may encompass me with mercy from Him and bounty."
وَAndاللَّهُAllahتَعَالَىthe ExaltedفِيinغَيْرِdifferentمَوْضِعٍplacesيَذْكُرُmentionsآلَائَهُHis favorsوَإِحْسَانَهُand His kindnessوَنِعَمَهُand His blessingsعَلَىuponعِبَادِهِHis servants،,وَيَأْمُرُهُمْand commands themأَنْtoيَذْكُرُوهَاremember them،,وَيَأْمُرُهُمْand commands themأَنْtoيَشْكُرُوهَاbe grateful for them.
And Allah, the Exalted, in different places, mentions His favors, His kindness, and His blessings upon His servants, and commands them to remember them, and He commands them to be grateful for them.
وَالْعَبْدُAnd the servantقَدhas indeedنُهِيَbeen forbiddenأَنْtoيَمُنَّbestow favorبِصَدَقَتِهِon his charityبِقَوْلِهِby His sayingتَعَالَى:the Exalted:{{لاDo notتُبْطِلُواinvalidateصَدَقَاتِكُمْyour charitiesبِالْمَنِّby boastingوَالْأَذَى}and harm.لِأَنَّBecauseالْمُتَصَدِّقَthe giverفِيinالْحَقِيقَةِtruthإِنَّمَاonlyأَحْسَنَdid goodإِلَىtoنَفْسِهِhimselfلَاnotإِلَىtoالْمُتَصَدَّقِthe receiverعَلَيْهِupon him,فَإِنَّهُfor ifلَوْلَاit were not forأَنْthatلَهُhe hasفِيinذَلِكَthatمَنْفَعَةٌbenefitوَأَجْرٌand rewardوَعَوْضٌand compensationلَمْhe would notيَتَصَدَّقْdonate.فَصَارَتْSo it becameكَالَّذِيlike one whoيَخْدِمُservesالْمَمَالِيكَpeople’s possessionsبِأَجْرَةٍwith a wageيَأْخُذُهَاthat he takesمِنْfromسَيِّدِهِمْhis ownerلَيْسَnotبِمُحْسِنٍbenevolentإِلَيْهِمْ.to them.
And the servant has indeed been forbidden to bestow favor on his charity by His saying the Exalted: {Do not invalidate your charities by boasting and harm.} Because the giver, in truth, only did good to himself, not to the receiver, for if it were not for his benefit, reward, and compensation, he would not have donated, so it became like one who serves people's possessions with a wage that he takes from his owner, not being benevolent to them.
وَأَيْضًاAnd alsoفَإِنَّfor indeedالْمُتَصَدِّقَthe giverاللَّهَAllahهُوَisالْمُنعِمُthe benefactorعَلَيْهِupon himبِمَاwith whatيَسَّرَHe made easyاللَّهُAllahلِلْإِحْسَانِto do goodإِلَىtoنَفْسِهِhimselfوَعَلَيْهِand upon himأَنْtoيَشْكُرَbe grateful forاللَّهَAllahتَعَالَىthe Exaltedوَيَرَىand seesأَنْthatاللَّهَAllahهُوَisالْمُحْسِنُthe benevolentإِلَيْهِtowards him.فَإِنIfنَظَرَhe looksإِلَىtoالْفِعْلِthe deed,فَاللَّهُthen Allahخَالِقُهُis its creator.وَإِنAnd ifنَظَرَhe looksإِلَىtoغَايَتِهِits goal,فَهُوَthen it is heيَطْلُبُseekingجَزَائَهُits rewardوَعَوْضَهُand compensationمِنَfromاللَّهِAllah.وَإِنAnd ifنَظَرَhe looksإِلَىtoالْمُحْسِنِthe benefactorإِلَيْهِtowards him,فَهُوَthen it is heالْمُحْسِنُwho is benevolentإِلَىtoنَفْسِهِhimself,وَاللَّهُand Allahأَحْسَنَhas done goodإِلَيْهِto himأَنْby makingجَعَلَهُhimمُحْسِنًاbenevolentإِلَىtoنَفْسِهِhimselfلَاnotظَالِمًاwrongingلَهَا.it.
And also for indeed the giver Allah is the benefactor upon him with what Allah made easy to do good to himself, and upon him to be grateful for Allah, the Exalted, and sees that Allah is the benevolent towards him. If he looks at the deed, then Allah is its creator, and if he looks at its goal, then he is seeking its reward and compensation from Allah. And if he looks to the benefactor towards him, then he is the one who is benevolent to himself, and Allah has done good to him by making him benevolent to himself, not wronging it.
فَلِهَذَاTherefore,كَانَit wasمِنْهُfrom himعَلَىuponالْمَخْلُوقِthe creatureظُلْمًاan injusticeأَبْطَلَthat invalidatedبِهِwith itصَدَقَتَهُhis charity,وَاللَّهُand Allahهُوَisالْمُنْعِمُthe benefactorعَلَىuponعِبَادِهِHis servantsحَقِيقَةًtrulyبِالنِّعْمَةِwith the blessing,وَالشُّكْرُand gratitudeعَلَيْهَاfor itإِذَاifأَعَانَهُمْHe assists themعَلَىin performingشُكْرِهِمْtheir gratitudeوَجَعَلَهُمْand made themشَاكِرِينَthankfulبِنِعْمَتِهِfor His blessing,,,بِثَوَابِby the rewardالشُّكْرِof gratitude.فَكُلُّIndeed, allذَلِكَthatتَفَضُّلٌis a favorمِنْهُfrom Himوَإِحْسَانٌand benevolenceمِنْfromغَيْرِwithoutأَنْthere beingيَكُونَto beلَهُfor Himعَلَىuponذَٰلِكَthatعَوْضٌcompensationيَأْخُذُهُto take fromمِنْfromغَيْرِهِمothers.لَاnotمِنَfromالْمُحْسِنِthe benevolent oneإِلَيْهِمْto themوَلَاnorمِنْfromغَيْرِهِothers,فَهُوَthen he is trulyالْمُنْعِمُthe benefactorحَقِيقَةًindeed,إِنifكَانَthere isلَهُfor Himفِيinالإِنْعَامِthe blessingsحِكْمَةٌwisdomيُحِبُّهَاthat He lovesوَاللَّهُand Allahيَرْضَاهَاis pleased with it.فَتِلْكَSo thatالْحِكْمَةُwisdomمِنْهُfrom Him,فَمَاso whatلِأَحَدٍfor any oneعَلَيْهِمْupon themمِّنَّةٌis a favor.وَهُوَAnd He isالْجَوَادُthe bounteous,الْمُحْضُthe generous.وَهُوَAnd He isسُبْحَانَهُGlory be to Himلَيْسَno oneكَمِثْلِهِis like Him.
Therefore, it was from him an injustice upon the creature that invalidated his charity, and Allah is the benefactor upon His servants truly with the blessing, and gratitude for it if He assists them in performing their gratitude and made them thankful for His blessing, by the reward of gratitude. Indeed, all that is a favor from Him and benevolence without there being for Him any compensation to take from others, not from the benevolent one to them nor from others; then He is truly the benefactor indeed, if there is for Him in the blessings wisdom that He loves and Allah is pleased with it. So that wisdom is from Him, so what is for any one upon them a favor. And He is the bounteous, the generous. And He is Glory be to Him, no one is like Him.
