نَعَمْYesثُمَّthenيَتَّخِذُونَthey takeالْمَطَابِخَthe kitchensفِيinالْعَلَالِيthe upper roomsعَلَىonظُهُورِtopsالسُّطُوحِof the roofs
Yes, then they place kitchens in the upper rooms on the tops of roofs,
وَإِنْand even ifكَانَthere isفِيinأَرْضِthe groundالدَّارِof the houseفَضْلٌextra spaceوَفِيand inصَحْنِهَاits courtyardمُتَّسَعٌample room
Even if there is extra space in the ground of the house and ample room in its courtyard,
مَعَwithمَاwhatفِيinذَلِكَthatمِنَofالْخَطَرِdangerبِالْأَنْفُسِto lives
Despite the danger to lives that this entails,
وَالتَّغْرِيرِand riskingبِالْأَمْوَالِof wealthوَتَعَرُّضِand exposureالْحُرَمِof the womenfolkلَيْلَةَon the nightالْحَرِيقِof the fireلِأَهْلِto the peopleالْفَسَادِof corruption
and risking of wealth, and the exposure of the womenfolk on the night of a fire to corrupt people,
وَهُجُومِهِمْand their assaultمَعَwithذَلِكَthatعَلَىuponسِرٍّa secretمَكْتُومٍconcealedوَخِبْءٍand a hidden thingمَسْتُورٍcovered
and their assault, despite that, upon a concealed secret and a hidden treasure,
مِنْofضَيْفٍa guestمُسْتَخْفٍّhidingوَرَبِّand an ownerدَارٍof a houseمُتَوَارٍconcealing himself
of a guest hiding, or a householder concealing himself,
وَمِنْand fromشَرَابٍdrinkمَكْرُوهٍdislikedوَمِنْand fromكِتَابٍa bookمُتَّهَمٍsuspectedوَمِنْand fromمَالٍwealthجَمٍّabundantأُرِيدَit was intendedدَفْنُهُto bury it
and from a disliked drink, and from a suspected book, and from abundant wealth intended to be buried,
فَأَعْجَلَand hastenedالْحَرِيقُthe fireأَهْلَهُits ownersعَنْfromذَلِكَthatفِيهِconcerning itوَمِنْand fromحَالَاتٍsituationsكَثِيرَةٍmanyوَأُمُورٍand mattersلَاnotيُحِبُّlikeالنَّاسُthe peopleأَنْthatيُعْرَفُواthey be knownبِهَاby them
so the fire hastened its owners from that concerning it, and from many situations and matters that people do not like to be known by.
ثُمَّThenلَاnotيَنْصِبُونَthey set upالتَّنَانِيرَthe ovens
Then they do not set up the ovens,
وَلَاnorيُمَكِّنُونَthey placeلِلْقُدُورِthe potsإِلَّاexceptعَلَىonمَتْنِthe surfaceالسَّطْحِof the roof
nor do they place the pots except on the surface of the roof,
حَيْثُwhereلَيْسَnotبَيْنَهَاbetween themوَبَيْنَand betweenالْقَصَبِthe reedsوَالْخَشَبِand the woodإِلَّاexceptالطِّينُthe clayالرَّقِيقُthinوَالشَّيْءُand the thingلَاnotيَقِيprotect
where there is nothing between them and the reeds and wood except thin clay and something that does not protect.
هَذَاthisمَعَwithخِفَّةِlightnessالْمَئُونَةِof the expenseفِيinإِحْكَامِهَاmaking them solidوَأَمْنِand securityالْقُلُوبِof heartsمِنَfromالْمَتالِفِdangersبِسَبَبِهَاbecause of them
This is despite the low cost of building them securely and the fact that hearts feel safe from dangers because of them.
فَإِنْFor ifكُنْتُمْyou areتُقْدِمُونَyou proceedعَلَىinذَلِكَthatمِنَّاfrom usوَمِنْكُمْand from youوَأَنْتُمْwhile youذَاكِرُونَare mindful (of the dangers)
For if you proceed with that, from us and from you, while you are mindful, then this is astonishing.
فَهَذَاthen thisعَجَبٌis astonishing
Then this is astonishing.
وَإِنْAnd ifكُنْتُمْyou areلَمْnotتَحْفِلُواyou careبِمَاabout whatعَلَيْكُمْupon youفِيconcerningأَمْوَالِنَاour wealthوَنَسِيتُمْand you forgotمَاwhatعَلَيْكُمْupon youفِيconcerningأَمْوَالِكُمْyour wealth
And if you do not care about what you owe regarding our wealth, and you forgot what you owe regarding your own wealth,
فَهَذَاthen thisأَعْجَبُis more astonishing
then this is even more astonishing.
ثُمَّThenإِنَّindeedكَثِيرًاmanyمِنْكُمْof youيُدَافِعُdelaysبِالْكِرَاءِwith the rentوَيُمَاطِلُand procrastinatesبِالْأَدَاءِin payment
Then indeed many of you delay with the rent and procrastinate in payment.
حَتَّىuntilإِذَاwhenاجْتَمَعَتْaccumulatedعَلَيْهِagainst himأَشْهُرٌmonthsفَرَّhe fledوَخَلَّىand leftأَرْبَابَهَاtheir ownersجِيَاعًاhungry
Until, when months accumulated against him, he fled and left their owners hungry,
يَتَذَمَّرُونَthey complainعَلَىaboutمَاwhatكَانَwasمِنْofحُسْنِgoodتَقَاضِيهِمْtheir demanding paymentوَإِحْسَانِهِمْand their kindness
complaining about their past good demand for payment and kindness.
فَكَانَSo wasجَزَاؤُهُمْtheir rewardوَشُكْرُهُمْand their thanksاقْتِطَاعَthe cutting offحُقُوقِهِمْof their rightsوَالذَّهَابَand the taking awayبِأَقْوَاتِهِمْof their provisions
So their reward and thanks was the cutting off of their rights and the taking away of their provisions.
وَيَسْكُنُهَاAnd he lives in itالسَّاكِنُthe residentحِينَwhenيَسْكُنُهَاhe lives in itوَقَدْwhileكَسَحْنَاهَاwe have swept itوَنَظَّفْنَاهَاand cleaned it
And the resident lives in it, when he lives in it, while we have swept and cleaned it,
لِتَحْسُنَso that it is goodفِيinعَيْنِthe eyeالْمُسْتَأْجِرِof the tenantوَلِيَرْغَبَand so that desiresفِيهَاin itالنَّاظِرُthe viewer
so that it looks good in the tenant's eye, and so that the viewer desires it.
فَإِذَاBut whenخَرَجَhe leavesتَرَكَhe leaves behindفِيهَاin itمَزْبَلَةًa garbage heapوَخَرَابًاand ruinلَاnotتُصْلِحُهُthat repairs itإِلَّاexceptالنَّفَقَةُthe expenseالْمُوجِعَةُpainful
But when he leaves, he leaves behind a garbage heap and ruin that nothing repairs except painful expense.
ثُمَّThenلَاnotيَدَعُhe leavesمِرْطَسًاa mortarإِلَّاexceptسَرَقَهُhe steals itوَلَاnorسُلَّمًاa ladderإِلَّاexceptحَمَلَهُhe carries it offوَلَاnorنَقْضًاbuilding materialsإِلَّاexceptأَخَذَهُhe takes itوَلَاnorبُرَادَةًsawdustإِلَّاexceptمَضَىhe goesبِهَاwith itمَعَهُwith him
Then he leaves no mortar except he steals it, no ladder except he carries it off, no building materials except he takes it, and no sawdust except he goes off with it.
وَيَدَعُAnd he leavesدَقَّthe poundingالثَّوْبِof the garmentوَالدَّقَّand the poundingفِيinالْهَاوَنِthe mortarوَالْمِنْحَازِand the sieve
And he leaves the pounding of the garment, and the pounding in the mortar and the sieve,
