دَاعِيَةًcallingإِلَىtoتُهْمَتِكُمْyour accusationوَأَخْذِand takingالْحَذَرِcautionمِنْكُمْfrom you
Calling to your accusation and taking caution from you.
وَلَيْسَتْand notلَكُمْfor youخَصْلَةٌa traitمَحْمُودَةٌpraiseworthyوَلَاand notخَلَّةٌa qualityفِيمَاin whatبَيْنَنَاbetween usوَبَيْنَكُمْand between youمَرْضِيَّةٌpleasing
You have no praiseworthy trait, nor a pleasing quality between us and you.
وَقَدْand indeedأَرَيْنَاكُمْwe have shown youأَنَّthatحُكْمَthe ruleالنَّازِلِينَof the settlersكَحُكْمِlike the ruleالْمُقِيمِينَof the residentsوَأَنَّand thatكُلَّeveryزِيَادَةٍincreaseفَلَهَاso for itنَصِيبٌa shareمِنَofالْغُلَّةِthe produce
We have shown you that the rule of the settlers is like the rule of the residents, and that every increase has a share of the produce.
وَلَوْand ifتَغَافَلْتُI had overlookedلَكَfor youيَاOأَخَاbrotherأَهْلِof the peopleالْبَصْرَةِof Basraعَنْforزِيَادَةِthe increaseرَجُلَيْنِof two menلَمْnotأُبْعِدْكَI would have excluded youعَلَىaccording toقَدْرِthe measureمَاwhatرَأَيْتُI have seenمِنْكَfrom youأَنْthatتُلْزِمَنِيyou would make me adhereذَلِكَthatفِيمَاin whatيَتَبَيَّنُbecomes clearحَتَّىuntilيَصِيرَbecomesكِرَاءُthe rentالْوَاحِدِof the oneكَكِرَاءِlike the rentالْأَلْفِof the thousandوَتَصِيرَand becomesالْإِقَامَةُthe residenceكَالظَّعْنِlike the departureوَالتَّفْرِيغُand the emptyingكَالشُّغْلِlike the occupation
If I had overlooked for you, O brother of the people of Basra, the increase of two men, I would not have excluded you according to what I have seen from you, that you would make me adhere to that in what becomes clear, until the rent of the one becomes like the rent of the thousand, and residence becomes like departure and emptying like occupation.
وَعَلَىand althoughأَنِّيthat IلَوْifأَمْسَكْتُI had refrainedعَنْfromتَقَاضِيكَdemanding from youوَتَغَافَلْتُand overlookedعَنْfromتَعْرِيفِكَinforming youمَاwhatعَلَيْكَis due to youلَذَهَبَwould have goneالْإِحْسَانُthe favorإِلَيْكَto youبَاطِلًاin vainإِذْsinceكُنْتَyou wereلَاnotتَرَىyou seeلِلزِّيَادَةِfor the increaseقَدْرًاvalue
And although if I had refrained from demanding from you and overlooked informing you of what is due to you, the favor to you would have gone in vain, since you do not see any value for the increase.
وَقَدْand indeedقَالَsaidالْأَوَّلُthe first
And indeed the first said:
وَالْكُفْرُand ingratitudeمُخْبِثَةٌspoilsلِنَفْسِthe soulالْمُنْعِمِof the benefactor
And ingratitude spoils the soul of the benefactor.
وَقَالَand saidالْآخَرُthe other
And the other said:
تَبَدَّلْتُI have exchangedبِالْمَعْرُوفِthe goodنُكْرًاfor evilوَرُبَّمَاand perhapsتَنَكَّرَbecomes unrecognizedلِلْمَعْرُوفِthe goodمَنْones whoكَانَareيَكْفُرُungrateful
I have exchanged good for evil, and perhaps the good becomes unrecognized by those who are ungrateful.
أَنْتَyouتُطَالِبُنِيdemand from meبِبُغْضِthe hatredالْمُعْتَزِلَةِof the Mu'tazilaلِلشِّيعَةِtowards the Shi'aوَبِمَاand by whatبَيْنَbetweenأَهْلِthe peopleالْكُوفَةِof Kufaوَالْبَصْرَةِand Basraوَبِالْعَدَاوَةِand by the enmityالَّتِيwhichبَيْنَbetweenأَسَدٍAsadوَكِنْدَةَand Kindaوَبِمَاand by whatفِيinقَلْبِthe heartالسَّاكِنِof the residentمِنَofاسْتِثْقَالِdisdainالْمُسْكِنِfor the dwellingوَسَيُعِينُand will helpاللهُAllahعَلَيْكَagainst youالسَّلَامُpeace
You demand from me the hatred of the Mu'tazila towards the Shi'a, and by what is between the people of Kufa and Basra, and by the enmity between Asad and Kinda, and by what is in the heart of the resident of disdain for the dwelling. And Allah will help against you. Peace.
