وَقَالَAnd saidعَبْدُAbdاللهِAllahبْنُibnالزُّبَيْرِ1az-ZubayrيَمْدَحُpraisingأَسْمَاءَAsmaبْنِibnخَارِجَةَKharijah
And Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr said, praising Asma ibn Kharijah:
أَلَمْDid notتَرَyou seeأَنَّthatالْمَجْدَgloryأَرْسَلَsentيَبْتَغِيseeking
Did you not see that glory sent seeking
حَلِيفَa confederateصَفَاءٍof purityوَأَتْلَىand a followerلَاnotيُزَايِلُهُ2it separates from him
a confederate of purity and a follower that never leaves him.
تَخَيَّرَchoseأَسْمَاءَAsmaبْنَibnحِصْنٍHusnفَبُطِّنَتْand lined
He chose Asma ibn Husn, and lined
بِفِعْلِwith deedsالْعُلَىof highnessأَيْمَانُهُhis right handsوَشَمَائِلُهُand his left hands
with deeds of highness his right and left hands.
تَرَىyou seeالْبَازِلَthe matureالْبُخْتِيَّBactrian camelفَوْقَaboveخِوَانِهِhis dining table
You see the mature Bactrian camel above his dining table
مُقَطَّعَةًcutأَعْضَاؤُهُits limbsوَمَفَاصِلُهُ3and its joints
its limbs and joints cut apart.
وَمِمَّاAnd among whatيَجُوزُis permissibleفِيinهَذَاthisالْبَابِchapter
And among what is permissible in this chapter,
وَإِنْeven ifلَمْnotيَكُنْbeفِيهِin itصِفَةُdescriptionقَدْرٍof quantity
even if there is no description of quantity in it,
قَوْلُis the sayingالْفَرَزْدَقِof al-Farazdaqفِيaboutالْعُذَافِرِal-UdhafirبْنِibnزَيْدٍZayd
is the saying of al-Farazdaq about al-Udhafir ibn Zayd,
أَحَدِone ofبَنِيthe sons ofتَيْمِTaymاللَّاتِal-LatبْنِibnثَعْلَبَةَTha'laba
one of the Banu Taym al-Lat ibn Tha'laba:
لَعَمْرُكَBy your lifeمَاnotالْأَرْزَاقُthe provisionsيَوْمَdayاكْتِيَالِهَاof measuring them
By your life, provisions on the day of measuring them are not
بِأَكْثَرَmoreخَيْرًاgoodمِنْthanخِوَانِthe dining tableالْعُذَافِرِ4of al-Udhafir
more good than the dining table of al-Udhafir.
وَلَوْAnd ifضَافَهُvisited him as a guestالدَّجَّالُthe Antichristيَلْتَمِسُseekingالْقِرَىhospitality
And if the Antichrist visited him as a guest seeking hospitality
وَحَلَّand alightedعَلَىuponخَبَّازِهِhis bakerبِالْعَسَاكِرِwith the armies
and alighted upon his baker with armies
بِعِدَّةِwith the numberيَأْجُوجَof Gogوَمَأْجُوجَand Magogجُوِّعُواwere famished
with the number of Gog and Magog, were they famished,
لَأَشْبَعَهُمْhe would have satisfied themشَهْرًاfor a monthغَدَاءُthe lunchالْعُذَافِرِof al-Udhafir
the lunch of al-Udhafir would have satisfied them for a month.
وَقَالَAnd saidابْنُibnعَبْدَلٍAbdalفِيaboutبِشْرِBishrبْنِibnمَرْوَانَMarwanبْنِibnالْحَكَمِ5al-Hakam
And Ibn Abdal said about Bishr ibn Marwan ibn al-Hakam:
لَوْIfشَاءَwishedبِشْرٌBishrكَانَwould beمِنْfromدُونِin front ofبَابِهِhis door
If Bishr wished, there would be in front of his door
طَمَاطِمُblacksسُودٌblackأَوْorصَقَالِبَةٌSlavsحُمْرٌ6red
black blacks or red Slavs.
وَلَكِنَّButبِشْرًاBishrأَسْهَلَmade easyالْبَابَthe doorلِلَّتِيfor that which
But Bishr made the door easy for that which
يَكُونُisلِبِشْرٍfor Bishrعِنْدَهَاin itالْحَمْدُpraiseوَالْأَجْرُand reward
in which there is for Bishr praise and reward.
بَعِيدُfarمُرَادِaimالْعَيْنِof the eyeمَاnotرَدَّrepelledطَرْفَهُhis gaze
Far of eye aim, not repelled his gaze
حِذَارَfor fear ofالْغَوَاشِيthe intrudersبَابُdoorدَارٍof a houseوَلَاnorسِتْرٌ7curtain
for fear of intruders, neither a door of a house nor a curtain.
وَقَالُواAnd they saidفِيaboutمُنَاقَضَاتِcontradictionsأَشْعَارِهِمْof their poemsفِيaboutالْقُدُورِthe cooking pots
And they said about the contradictions of their poems about the cooking pots. Al-Raqashi said:
لَنَاfor usمِنْfromعَطَاءِgiftاللهِAllahدَهْمَاءُdarkجَوْنَةٌblackish
For us from the gift of Allah is a dark, blackish pot
تَنَاوَلُit reachesبَعْدَafterالْأَقْرَبِينَthe closest relativesالْأَقَاصِيَا8the far ones
it reaches after the closest relatives the far ones.
