جَعَلْنَاwe madeأَلَالَاa firewoodوَالرَّجَامَand stonesوَطُخْفَةَand Tukhfa......لَهَاfor itفَاسْتَقَلَّتْand it stoodفَوْقَهُنَّabove themأَثَافِيَا1cooking stones
We made firewood, stones, and Tukhfa ... for it, and it stood above them on cooking stones. [1]
مُؤَدِّيَةًfulfillingعَنَّاon behalf of usحُقُوقَthe rights ofمُحَمَّدٍMuhammad......إِذَاwhenمَاindeedأَتَانَاhe came to usبَائِسُmiserableالْحَالِthe conditionطَاوِيًاhungry
Fulfilling on our behalf the rights of Muhammad ... when a miserable, hungry person came to us.
أَتَىhe cameابْنُson ofيَسِيرٍYasirكَيْin order toيُنَفِّسَrelieveكُرَبَهَاits distress......إِذَاwhenلَمْnotيَرِحْhe does not restوَافَىhe arrivesمَعَwithالصُّبْحِthe morningغَادِيًاgoing early
Ibn Yasir came to relieve its distress ... when he did not rest, he arrived with the morning, going early.
فَأَجَابَهُand he answered himابْنُson ofيَسِيرٍYasirفَقَالَand he said::
And Ibn Yasir answered him, saying:
وَثَرْمَاءَand a crackedثَلْمَاءَbrokenالنَّوَاحِيthe sidesوَلَاand notيُرَىis seenبِهَاin itأَحَدٌanyoneعَيْبًاa defectسِوَىexceptذَاكَthatبَادِيًا2apparent
And a cracked pot, broken on the sides, and no one sees in it a defect except that, apparent. [2]
يُنَادِيcalls outبَعْضُsomeبَعْضِهِمْof themعِنْدَatطَلْعَتِيmy appearance::أَلَاindeedأَبْشِرُواrejoiceهَذَاthisالْيَسِيرِيُّthe Yasiriجَائِيًاcoming
Some of them call out at my appearance: 'Indeed, rejoice! This is the Yasiri coming.'
وَقَالَand he saidابْنُson ofيَسِيرٍYasirفِيinذَلِكَthat::
And Ibn Yasir said in that regard:
قِدْرُthe pot ofالرَّقَاشِيِّal-Raqashiلَمْnotتُنْقَرْis carvedبِمِنْقَارٍwith a chiselمِثْلُlikeالْقُدُورِthe potsوَلَمْand notتُفْتَصَّis cut outمِنْfromغَارٍ3a cave
The pot of al-Raqashi was not carved with a chisel like other pots, nor was it cut out from a cave. [3]
لَكِنَّbutقِدْرَthe pot ofأَبِيAbuحَفْصٍHafsإِذَاwhenنُسِبَتْit is attributedيَوْمًاone dayرَبِيبَةُfoster child ofآجَامٍreed bedsوَأَنْهَارٍ4and rivers
But the pot of Abu Hafs, when it is attributed one day, is the foster child of reed beds and rivers. [4]
فَاعْتَرَضَand he interruptedبَيْنَهُمَاbetween themأَبُوAbuنُوَاسٍNuwasالْحَسَنُal-Hasanبْنُson ofهَانِئٍHaniالْحَكَمِيُّal-Hakamiيَذْكُرُmentioningقِدْرَthe pot ofالرَّقَاشِيِّal-Raqashiبِالْهِجَاءِwith satireأَيْضًاalsoفَقَالَand he said::
And Abu Nuwas al-Hasan ibn Hani al-Hakami interrupted between them, mentioning the pot of al-Raqashi with satire also, and he said:
وَدَهْمَاءَand a blackتُثْفِيهَاthat heats itرَقَاشُRaqashإِذَاwhenشَتَتْit is winterمُرَكَّبَةَhaving attachedالْآذَانِearsأُمَّmother ofعِيَالٍ5children
And a black pot that Raqash heats in winter, having attached ears, mother of children. [5]
يَغُصُّchokesبِحَيْزُومِwith the thorax ofالْبَعُوضَةِthe mosquitoصَدْرُهَاits chestوَتُنْزِلُهَاand it descendsعَفْوًاspontaneouslyبِغَيْرِwithoutجُعَالٍ6reward
Its chest chokes on the thorax of a mosquito, and it descends spontaneously without any reward. [6]
وَلَوْand ifجِئْتَهَاyou brought itمَلْأَىfullعَبِيطًاfresh meatمُجَزَّلًاcut into piecesلَأَخْرَجَتْit would expelمَاwhatفِيهَاin itبِعُودِwith a stick ofخِلَالٍ7toothpick
And if you brought it full of fresh meat cut into pieces, it would expel what is in it with a toothpick. [7]
هِيَit isالْقِدْرُthe potقِدْرُthe pot ofالشَّيْخِthe elderبَكْرِBakrبْنِson ofوَائِلٍWailرَبِيعِspring ofالْيَتَامَىthe orphansعَامَyear ofكُلِّeveryهَزَالٍemaciation
It is the pot, the pot of the elder Bakr ibn Wail, spring of the orphans in every year of emaciation.

- 1.أَلَالٌ: مَا اشْتَدَّ مِنَ الْحِجَارَةِ، وَالرَّجَامُ: الْحِجَارَةُ الَّتِي تُنْصَبُ حَوْلَ الْقِدْرِ، وَالطُّخْفَةُ: مَا اجْتَمَعَ مِنَ الْحِجَارَةِ حَوْلَ الْقِدْرِ.
Alal: stones that are hard; al-rajam: stones set around the pot; at-tukhfa: stones gathered around the pot.
- 2.الثُّرْمَةُ: الْكَسْرُ، وَالثُّلْمَةُ: الْخَلَلُ فِي الْحَافَةِ.
Ath-thurma: a break; ath-thulma: a gap in the edge.
- 3.الْمِنْقَارُ: آلَةُ النَّجَّارِ، وَالْغَارُ: الْمَغَارَةُ، وَالْفَتْصُ: الْقَطْعُ.
Al-minqar: a carpenter's tool; al-ghar: a cave; al-fats: cutting.
- 4.يَقُولُ: إِنَّ قِدْرَ الرَّقَاشِيِّ صَنَاعَةٌ بَشَرِيَّةٌ مَحْضَةٌ، وَأَمَّا قِدْرُ أَبِي حَفْصٍ فَهِيَ كَالنَّبَاتِ الَّذِي يُرَبَّى فِي الْآجَامِ وَالْأَنْهَارِ.
He says: The pot of al-Raqashi is a purely human craft, but as for the pot of Abu Hafs, it is like a plant grown in reed beds and rivers.
- 5.الدَّهْمَاءُ: السَّوْدَاءُ، وَتُثْفِيهَا: تُوقِدُ تَحْتَهَا، وَالْآذَانُ: أُذُنُ الْقِدْرِ، وَالْعِيَالُ: الْأَوْلَادُ.
Ad-dahma': black; tuthfiha: kindles under it; al-adhan: the ears of the pot; al-iyal: children.
- 6.الْحَيْزُومُ: الصَّدْرُ، وَالْجُعَالُ: الْأَجْرُ.
Al-hayzum: chest; al-ju'al: reward.
- 7.الْعَبِيطُ: اللَّحْمُ الطَّرِيُّ، وَالْمُجَزَّلُ: الْمُقَطَّعُ، وَالْخِلَالُ: الْعُودُ الَّذِي يُخَلُّ بِهِ الْأَسْنَانُ.
Al-abit: fresh meat; al-mujazzal: cut into pieces; al-khilal: the stick used to pick teeth.
