وَقَالَand saidحَسَّانُHassanبْنُson ofثَابِتٍ:Thabit:
And Hassan ibn Thabit said:
ثَرِيدٌA tharidكَأَنَّas ifالسَّمْنَthe gheeفِيinحَجَرَاتِهِits bits......
A tharid as if the ghee in its bits ...
نُجُومُstars ofالثُّرَيَّاthe Pleiadesأَوْorعُيُونُeyes ofالضِّيَاءِ1the light
the stars of the Pleiades or the eyes of the light ⟦1⟧
وَقَالَand saidابْنُIbnهَرْمَةَ:Harmah:
And Ibn Harmah said:
إِلَىuntilأَنْthatأَتَاهُمْhe brought themبِشِيزِيَةٍ2with a Shiziyyah
Until he brought them with a Shiziyyah ⟦2⟧
تَعَنُّshe ascendsكَوَاكِبُهَاits starsالشُّبَّكِthe lattice
its stars ascend the lattice
وَقَالَand saidكَامِلُKamilبْنُson ofعِكْرِمَةَ:Ikrimah:
And Kamil ibn Ikrimah said:
فَقَرَّبَand he brought nearبَيْنَهُمْamong themخُبْزًاbreadرَكُودًا3solid
And he brought near among them solid bread ⟦3⟧
كَسَاهَاcovered itالشَّحْمُthe fatيَنْهَمِرُpouringاِنْهِمَارًاin a pour
the fat covered it pouring in a pour
يَدُفُّhe hurriesبِهَاwith itغُلَامَاهُhis two servantsجَمِيعًاboth......
His two servants hurry with it both ...
تَرُدُّهُمَاpulls them backإِلَىtoالْأَرْضِthe groundاِنْهِيصَارًا4a sinking
pulls them back to the ground a sinking ⟦4⟧
فَأَصْبَحَand becameسُورُهُمْtheir wallفِيهَاin itعَلَمِيmy knowledge......
And their wall became in it my knowledge ...
لَوْifأَنَّthatالْعِلْمَthe knowledgeصَنَّفَهَاclassified itإِسَارًا5as a bracelet
if the knowledge classified it as a bracelet ⟦5⟧
فَهَذَاso thisفِيinصِفَةِdescription ofالثَّرِيدِ.the tharid.
So this is in description of the tharid.
وَقَالَand saidبِشْرُBishrبْنُson ofأَبِيAbiخَازِمٍ:Khazim:
And Bishr ibn Abi Khazim said:
تَرَىyou seeوَدَكَthe grease ofالسَّدِيفِthe fat meatعَلَىonلِحَاهُمْtheir beards......
You see the grease of the fat meat on their beards ...
كَلَوْنِlike the color ofالرَّارِthe resinلَبَّدَهُit made it compactالصَّقِيعُ6the frost
like the color of the resin made compact by the frost ⟦6⟧
وَقَالَand saidالْآخَرُ:the other:
And the other said:
جَلَاit clearedالْأَذْفَرُthe strong-smelling muskالْأَحْوَىthe blackمِنَfromالْمِسْكِthe muskفَرْقَهُhis part......
The black strong-smelling musk cleared his hair part from ...
وَطِيبُand the goodness ofالدِّهَانِthe oilsرَأْسَهُhis headفَهُوَso he isأَنْزَعُ7bald in front
and the goodness of the oils (made) his head, so he is bald in front ⟦7⟧

Ad-Diyā': plural of ḍaw' (light), and it is said it is a place name.

Ash-Shīziyah: a bowl attributed to Shīz, a town in Persia.

Ar-Rakūd: that which is not turned over, and it is said it is bread without leaven.
- 4.الِانْهِيصَارُ: الِانْقِبَاضُ وَالِانْزِوَاءُ.
Al-Inhiṣār: contraction and drawing back.
- 5.الْإِسَارُ: حَلْيٌ يُلْبَسُ فِي الْيَدِ، وَقِيلَ: هُوَ سِوَارٌ مِنْ قَرْنٍ أَوْ عَاجٍ.
Al-Isār: an ornament worn on the hand, and it is said it is a bracelet of horn or ivory.
- 6.الرَّارُ: صَمْغُ شَجَرٍ يُشْبِهُ الْكُنْدُرَ، وَالصَّقِيعُ: الْجَلِيدُ.
Ar-Rār: a tree resin resembling frankincense; Aṣ-Ṣaqī' is frost.
- 7.الْأَذْفَرُ: الْمُتَغَيِّرُ الرَّائِحَةِ، وَالْأَحْوَى: الْأَسْوَدُ، وَالْفَرْقُ: فَرْقُ الرَّأْسِ، وَالْأَنْزَعُ: الَّذِي ذَهَبَ شَعْرُهُ مِنْ مُقَدَّمِ رَأْسِهِ.
Al-Adhfar: foul-smelling; Al-Aḥwā: black; Al-Farq: the part of the head; Al-Anza': one whose hair has gone from the front of his head.
