فَبَابُكَAnd your doorأَلْيَنُis softerأَبْوَابِهِمْthan their doors
And your door is softer than their doors
وَandدَارُكَyour homeمَأْهُولَةٌis inhabitedعَامِرَةٌand prosperous
and your home is inhabited and prosperous
وَandكَلْبُكَyour dogآنَسُis more familiarبِالْمُعْتَفِينَwith the seekersمِنَthanالْأُمِّthe motherبِابْنَتِهَاwith her daughterالزَّائِرَةِthe visiting
and your dog is more familiar with the seekers than a mother with her visiting daughter
وَandكَفُّكَyour palmحِينَwhenتَرَىit seesالسَّائِلَthe beggarيْنَisأَنْدَىmore generousمِنَthanاللَّيْلَةِthe nightالْمَاطِرَةِ1the rainy
and your palm, when it sees the beggar, is more generous than the rainy night
فَمِنْكَSo from youالْعَطَاءُis givingوَandمِنَّاfrom usالثَّنَاءُis praiseبِكُلِّwith everyمُحْبَرَةٍinkwellسَائِرَةٍ2traveling
So from you comes giving, and from us praise, with every traveling inkwell.
وَAndفِيinأُنْسِthe familiarityالْكِلَابِof dogsبِالنَّاسِwith peopleلِطُولِdue to lengthالرُّؤْيَةِof seeingلَهُمْthemشِعْرٌpoetryكَثِيرٌmuch
And regarding dogs' familiarity with people due to long acquaintance, there is much poetry.
وَandقَالَsaidالشَّاعِرُthe poet
And the poet said:
يَاOأُمَّmotherعَمْرٍوAmrأَنْجِزِيfulfillالْمَوْعُودَاthe promise
O mother of Amr, fulfill the promise
وَandارْعَيْkeepبِذَاكَwith thatأَمَانَةًa trustوَandعُهُودَاcovenants
and keep with that a trust and covenants
وَandلَقَدْcertainlyطَرَقْتُI came at nightكِلَابُthe dogsأَهْلِكَof your familyبِالضُّحَىin the forenoon
And certainly I came at night to the dogs of your family in the forenoon
حَتَّىuntilتَرَكْتُI leftعُقُورَهُنَّtheir fierce onesرُقُودَاsleeping
until I left their fierce ones sleeping
يَضْرِبْنَthey strikeبِالْأَذْنَابِwith the tailsمِنْfromفَرَحٍjoyبِنَاwith us
they strike their tails from joy with us
مُتَوَسِّدَاتٍresting onأَذْرُعًاforearmsوَandخُدُودَاcheeks
resting on forearms and cheeks
وَandقَالَsaidذُوthe possessorالرُّمَّةِ3of the rope
And Dhu ar-Rumma said:
رَأَتْنِيsaw meكِلَابُthe dogsالْحَيِّof the tribeحَتَّىuntilأَلِفَتْنِيthey became familiar with me
The dogs of the tribe saw me until they became familiar with me
وَandمَدَّتْand they extendedنُسُوجَthe weavingsالْعَنْكَبُوتِof the spiderعَلَىonرَحْلِيmy saddle
and they extended the spider's weavings on my saddle
وَandقَالَsaidالْآخَرُthe other
And the other said:
بَاتَspent the nightالْحُوَيْرِثُHuwayrithوَandالْكِلَابُthe dogsتَشُمُّهُsmell him
Huwayrith spent the night while the dogs smell him
وَandسَرَتْand traveled at nightبِأَبْيَضَwith a white oneكَالْهِلَالِlike the crescentعَلَىonالطَّوَى4hunger
and traveled by night with a white one like the crescent on hunger
هَذَاthisالْبَيْتُverseيَدْخُلُentersفِيinهَذَاthisالْبَابِchapter
This verse falls under this chapter.
وَandقَالَsaidالْآخَرُthe other
And the other said:
لَوْifكُنْتُI wereأَحْمِلُcarryingخَمْرًاwineيَوْمَthe dayزُرْتُكُمْI visited you
If I were carrying wine on the day I visited you
لَمْnotيُنْكِرِwould denyالْكَلْبُthe dogإِنِّيthat Iصَاحِبُthe ownerالدَّارِof the house
the dog would not deny that I am the owner of the house
لَكِنْbutأَتَيْتُI cameوَandرِيحُthe scentالْمِسْكِof muskيَنْفَحُنِيwafting over me
but I came with the scent of musk wafting over me
وَandالْعَنْبَرُthe ambergrisالْوَرْدُthe roseأُذْكِيهِI kindle itعَلَىonالنَّارِthe fire
and I kindle the ambergris and rose on the fire
فَأَنْكَرَso he deniedالْكَلْبُthe dogرِيحِيmy scentحِينَwhenأَبْصَرَنِيhe saw me
So the dog denied my scent when he saw me
وَandكَانَhe wasيَعْرِفُrecognizingرِيحَthe smellالزِّقِّof the wine skinوَandالْقَارِ5of tar
and he used to recognize the smell of the wine skin and tar.
