أُكَلِّمُكَI speak to youمِنَfromالْجُوعِhungerإِلَّاexceptوَأَنَاwhile Iمُتَّكِئٌreclining

I speak to you of hunger while reclining.

الْجُوَارِشْنُThe stomachicمَاwhatأَصْنَعُshall I doبِهِ؟with it?

What shall I do with the stomachic?

هُوَItنَفْسُهُitselfلَيْسَis notيَشْبَعُsatisfied

It itself is not satisfied.

وَلَاand notيَحْتَاجُit needsإِلَىtoالْجُوَارِشْنِthe stomachic

And it does not need the stomachic.

وَنَحْنُAnd weالَّذِينَwhoإِنَّمَاonlyنَسْمَعُhearبِالشِّبَعِof satietyسَمَاعًاa hearingمِنْfromأَفْوَاهِmouthsالنَّاسِpeople

And we only hear of satiety from people's mouths.

وَمَاAnd whatنَصْنَعُshall we doبِالْجُوَارِشْنِ؟with the stomachic?

And what shall we do with the stomachic?

وَاشْتَدَّAnd he intensifiedعَلَىonغِلْمَانِهِhis servantsفِيinتَصْفِيَةِfilteringالْمَاءِthe water

And he was strict with his servants in filtering the water.

وَفِيand inتَبْرِيدِهِcooling itوَتَزْمِيلِهِ1and covering it

And in cooling it and covering it [1].

لِأَصْحَابِهِfor his companionsوَزُوَّارِهِand his visitors

For his companions and visitors.

فَقَالَAnd saidلَهُto himغَازِيGhaziأَبُوAbuمُجَاهِدٍMujahid

And Ghazi Abu Mujahid said to him.

«جُعِلْتُ"May I be madeفِدَاكَ!your ransom!"

"May I be your ransom!"

مُرْOrderبِتَزْمِيلِto coverالْخُبْزِthe breadوَبِتَكْبِيرِهِand to divide it into pieces

Order to cover the bread and divide it into pieces.

فَإِنَّfor indeedالطَّعَامَthe foodقَبْلَbeforeالشَّرَابِthe drink

For food comes before drink.

وَقَالَAnd he saidمَرَّةًonce

And he said once.

«يَا"Oغُلَامُboyهَاتِbringخَوَانَthe tableالنَّرْدِ»of backgammon"

"O boy, bring the backgammon table."

وَهُوَwhile heيُرِيدُintendsتَخْتَthe boardالنَّرْدِof backgammon

While he meant the backgammon board.

فَقَالَAnd saidلَهُto himغَازِيGhazi

And Ghazi said to him.

«نَحْنُ"Weإِلَىtoخَوَانِthe tableالْخُبْزِof breadأَحْوَجُ»are more in need"

"We are more in need of the bread table."

وَسَكِرَAnd he got drunkزُبَيْدَةُZubaydahلَيْلَةًone night

And Zubaydah got drunk one night.

فَكَسَاand clothedصَدِيقًاa friendلَهُof hisقَمِيصًاa shirt

And he clothed a friend of his a shirt.

فَلَمَّاAnd whenصَارَbecameالْقَمِيصُthe shirtعَلَىonالنَّدِيمِthe boon companion

And when the shirt was on the companion.

خَافَhe fearedالْبَدَوَاتِ2the regrettable actions

He feared the regrettable actions [2].

وَعَلِمَAnd he knewأَنَّthatذَلِكَthatهَفْوَةٌa slipمِنْofهَفَوَاتِslipsالسُّكْرِof intoxication

And he knew that was a slip of the slips of intoxication.

فَمَضَىAnd he wentمِنْfromسَاعَتِهِhis hourإِلَىtoمَنْزِلِهِhis house

And he went from his hour to his house.

فَجَعَلَهُand made itبِرْنِكَانًا3a cloakلِامْرَأَتِهِfor his wife

And made it a cloak [3] for his wife.

فَلَمَّاAnd whenأَصْبَحَhe woke up

And when he woke up.

سَأَلَhe askedعَنِaboutالْقَمِيصِthe shirtوَتَفَقَّدَهُand looked for it

He asked about the shirt and looked for it.

فَقِيلَAnd it was saidلَهُto him

And it was said to him.

«إِنَّكَ"Indeed youقَدْhaveكَسَوْتَهُclothed himفُلَانًا»so-and-so"

"You have given it to so-and-so."

فَبَعَثَAnd he sentإِلَيْهِto him

And he sent to him.

ثُمَّThenأَقْبَلَhe turnedعَلَيْهِto him

Then he turned to him.

فَقَالَand said

And said.

«مَا"Whatعَلِمْتَdo you knowأَنَّthatهِبَةَthe giftالسُّكْرَانِof the drunkوَشِرَاءَهُand his purchaseوَبَيْعَهُand his saleوَصَدَقَتَهُand his charityوَطَلَاقَهُand his divorceلَاnotيَجُوزُ؟are valid?"

"Do you not know that the gift of the drunk, his purchase, his sale, his charity, and his divorce are not valid?"

وَبَعْدُAnd besidesفَإِنِّيIأَكْرَهُdislikeأَلَّاthat notيَكُونَbeلِيfor meحَمْدٌpraise

And besides, I dislike that there be no praise for me.

وَأَنْand thatيُوَجِّهَattributeالنَّاسُpeopleهَذَاthisمِنِّيfrom meعَلَىtoالسُّكْرِdrunkenness

And that people attribute this to my drunkenness.

فَرُدَّهُSo return itعَلَيَّto me

So return it to me.

حَتَّىso thatأَهَبَهُI give itلَكَto youصَاحِيًاsoberعَنْofطِيبِwillingnessنَفْسٍsoul

So that I give it to you sober, willingly.

فَإِنِّيfor Iأَكْرَهُdislikeأَنْthatيَذْهَبَgoesشَيْءٌsomethingمِنْfromمَالِيmy wealthبَاطِلًاin vain

For I dislike that anything from my wealth goes in vain.

فَلَمَّاAnd whenرَآهُhe saw himصَمَّمَhe persistedأَقْبَلَturnedعَلَيْهِto him

And when he saw him persist, he turned to him.

فَقَالَand said

And said.

«يَا"Oهَنَاهُ4you there

"O you there [4]."

إِنَّIndeedالنَّاسَpeopleيَمْزَحُونَjokeوَيَلْعَبُونَand playوَلَاand notيُؤَاخَذُونَthey are held accountableبِشَيْءٍfor anythingمِنْofذَلِكَthat

Indeed people joke and play, and they are not held accountable for anything of that.

فَرُدَّSo returnالْقَمِيصَthe shirtعَافَاكَmay He preserve youاللهُGod

So return the shirt, may God preserve you.

قَالَSaidلَهُto himالرَّجُلُthe man

The man said to him.

«إِنِّي"Indeed Iوَاللهِby Godقَدْhaveخِفْتُfearedهَذَاthisبِعَيْنِهِexactly

"Indeed, by God, I feared exactly this."

فَلَمْAnd notأَضَعْI putجَنْبِيmy sideإِلَىtoالْأَرْضِthe groundحَتَّىuntilجَيَّبْتُهُI made it a pocketed garment

And I did not put my side to the ground until I made it a pocketed garment.
