فِيinبَيْتٍa houseقُبُوراًgraves
In a house 'graves'
وَفِيand inالْبَيْتِthe houseالْآخَرِotherكَبِيراًbig
and in the other house 'big'
عَلَىuponالْعَكْسِthe contraryمِنَofالشُّعَرَاءِthe poetsالْعَجَمِnon-Arab
contrary to the non-Arab poets.
وَهَكَذَاand thusيَرَىseesالشُّعَرَاءُthe poetsالْعَرَبُArab
And thus the Arab poets see
أَنَّthatحَاصِلَresultدَاخِلٍentering
that the result of 'entering'
وَنَازِلٍand descendingمِنْfromقِسْمٍpartوَاحِدٍone
and 'descending' are from one part
بِخِلَافِunlikeالشُّعَرَاءِthe poetsالْعَجَمِnon-Arab
unlike the non-Arab poets.
تَوْزِيعُdistributionالْكَلِمَةِthe wordالْوَاحِدَةِsingleفِيinشَطْرَيْtwo halvesالْبَيْتِof the verse
Distribution of a single word in the two halves of the verse:
كَذَلِكَsimilarlyوُقُوعُoccurrenceكَلِمَةٍwordوَاحِدَةٍsingleبَيْنَbetweenشَطْرَيْtwo halvesالْبَيْتِof the verse
Likewise, the occurrence of a single word between the two halves of the verse
بِحَيْثُsuch thatيَكُونُisنِصْفُهَاits halfفِيinالشَّطْرِthe halfالْأَوَّلِfirst
such that half of it is in the first half
وَالنِّصْفُand the halfالْآخَرُotherفِيinالشَّطْرِthe halfالثَّانِيsecond
and the other half in the second half
صَحِيحٌcorrectعِنْدَwithالْعَرَبِthe Arabsخَطَأٌerrorعِنْدَwithالْعَجَمِthe non-Arabs
is correct for the Arabs, an error for the non-Arabs.
وَبِالْجُمْلَةِand in summaryفَإِنَّindeedالْأَمْرَthe matterالْجَامِعَunifyingالْمُشْتَرَكَcommon
And in summary, the unifying common matter
هُوَisالتَّوَافُقُthe harmonyالتَّقْرِيبِيُّapproximateالتَّقْدِيرِيُّestimatedلَاnotالتَّوَافُقُthe harmonyالْحَقِيقِيُّreal
is approximate estimated harmony, not real harmony.
أَوْزَانُmetersالْهُنُودِof the Indians
[Indian Meters]
وَقَدْand indeedوَضَعَlaid downالْهُنُودُthe Indiansأَوْزَانَmetersشِعْرِهِمْof their poetry
And the Indians have laid down their poetry meters
عَلَىuponعَدَدِnumberالْحُرُوفِof lettersمِنْfromدُونِwithoutمُلَاحَظَةٍobserving
based on the number of letters without observing
وَاعْتِبَارٍand consideringلِلْحَرَكَاتِthe vowelsوَالسَّكَنَاتِand quiescences
and considering vowels and consonants.
وَهِيَand itكَذَلِكَsimilarlyتَمْنَحُgrantsلَذَّةًpleasureوَمُتْعَةًand enjoymentفَنِّيَّةًartistic
And it likewise grants artistic pleasure and enjoyment.
أَلْحَانُmelodiesالْقَرَوِيِّينَof the villagers
Villagers' Melodies:
وَقَدْand indeedسَمِعْنَاwe have heardأَلْحَانَmelodiesبَعْضِsomeالْقَرَوِيِّينَvillagersالرِّيفِيِّينَrural
And we have heard the melodies of some rural villagers
الَّتِيwhichيُلَحِّنُونَthey compose/singبِهَاwith itلِلْحُصُولِto obtainعَلَىofالْمُتْعَةِenjoymentوَالذَّوْقِand taste
which they use for melodies to obtain enjoyment and taste,
وَهِيَand itفِيinالْوَاقِعِrealityتَشْتَمِلُincludesعَلَىuponتَوَافُقٍharmonyتَقْرِيبِيٍّapproximate
and it - in reality - includes approximate harmony
بَيْنَbetweenأَجْزَاءِpartsالْكَلَامِof speechأَوْorتَشْتَمِلُincludesعَلَىuponرَدِيفٍa refrain
between parts of speech, or includes a refrain.
